Biden makes the Affirmative Action argument

At moments like this, one has to wonder whether Barack Obama regrets his running-mate selection.  Going where Obama refused to go during his entire campaign, Joe Biden argued that voters in North Carolina should vote for Obama because of his skin pigmentation rather than his policies or accomplishments.  Or perhaps it’s because of his cleanliness and articulation?

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, campaigning in North Carolina where black votes could help swing the state to the Democrats, said today that electing a black person to the White House would be transformative.

Biden said the policies of running mate Barack Obama make his presidency even more urgent and declared this to be the most important election that any living person has seen in their lifetime. But he particularly singled out the meaning of electing someone who is black.

“That will be a transformative event in American politics and internationally,” Biden said. “That all by itself will be significant.”

It’s an extension of the Identity Politics Primary that the Democrats conducted this year, which boiled down to whether the party would nominate an African-American or a woman rather than look for experience, electability, and individual accomplishments.  This has been the subtext of the Obama campaign all along, but Obama and his team have been smart enough to let proxies make that argument at arm’s length from the candidate.  Now Biden has made the Obama campaign look like it needs to make overtly racial pleas to garner votes, and to play on fears and guilt of white voters.

Obama himself warned that the McCain campaign would make an issue of his race.  He never offered a single shred of evidence for it, and at least some of the media remained skeptical of Obama’s claims.  Joe Biden now has completely undermined this argument, and stupidly put the issue directly on the table.  What does that gain him?  Obama had 90% of the black vote locked up, and anyone inclined to vote for Obama out of some sense of collective guilt and expiation had long ago made that calculation on his own.

McCain won’t touch this, of course, nor should he.  Res ipsa loquitur.  (via Michelle)

leetpriest I am laughing so hard I have tears running down my face.

Thanks. I needed that.

Bringing out the race card is NOT in the Dem’s best interest. After all, I have a union worker relative who has voted Dem all his life despite his best efforts to convince him otherwise. And now he’s going to have to make the tough decision of whether he’s more of a Democrat or a racist before voting. Joe Biden may have just lost relative’s florida vote.

So Obama is advancing solely because of his skin color?

Sure. Yes. Definitely. No question.

Because when you come right down to it: what has he actually done? He had 147 days of work in the U.S. Senate before announcing his campaign. He has authored no major legislative bills. He has no major accomplishments to speak of. He is – or I should say was – charismatic and a good speaker; but that’s about it.

The best you could say of him is that he is a black version of John Edwards. Edwards has failed to win the nomination in too tries and to be honest he didn’t really come close in either try. Obama beat a well-funded challenger in Hillary Clinton.

He’s the least accomplished presidential candidate from a major ticket in living memory. No way he does win the Dem nomination if he’s white. Just ask Geraldine Ferraro.

This point is so obvious I would wonder that anyone would seriously dispute it.

I want to be politically correct here,so I need some advice from my fellow bloggers here!My question,”Is it racist to say that Ophrah is looking more and more like Aunt Jemimah as she gets older and fatter?”Just thinking out loud!

Ed’s subtitle for this post (Gaffemaster) isn’t accurate. It’s not a gaffe when it’s done intentionally. Biden knows full-well what he’s saying.

No, only a racist would say that a graduate of Harvard Law, state senator and federal senator has made it this far solely because of the color of his skin. It just irks me when conservatives throw his words around when he himself was anything but conservative.

crr6 on September 15, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Obama did nothing of significance as a senator. If he had waited to run for President and focused on accomplishing something, anything, maybe you would have a point. But do yu have any idea how many Havard grads there are? So what. No ne can claim that Obama is running on his record. So what is left? His ariculatness? His self-discovery books? What? Obama is the very definition of affirmative action.

And I’m not even that opposed to affirmative action in education, but this is too important to get sentimental. We need experience, this is a dangerous world that Obama has demonstrated he has no expertise in understanding.

Maybe after working with Obama Biden can see that he is a disaster in the making and really is trying to alert his party. I mean, the Hillary is better, and now this? Maybe Biden is a true patriot and hopes this will put McCain in office.

petunia on September 15, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Yep, most Americans including myself would agree that Affirmative Action should be temporary. I personally believe however, that given the still stark inequalities between blacks and whites in income, education and wealth MLK would still support its use today. Of course that’s up for debate.

The “stark inequalities between blacks and whites” have absolutely nothing to do with racism. They are caused by rampant problems within the black community. Problems that so called black leaders refuse to address.

No amount of affirmative action is going to make up for any of them.

The first half of your post is all partisan cr*p,
crr6 on September 15, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Ah yes, the standard liberal line. Anything I don’t agree with is cr*p.

I notice that you don’t even try to respond to it. And we both know why. You can’t.

MarkTheGreat on September 15, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Yep, most Americans including myself would agree that Affirmative Action should be temporary.

40+ years into this “temporary” program and every effort to make it temporary is greeted with cries of racism. The fact is that too many people have a vested interest in its continuance. Affirmative action has become a way of life for many people and what’s worse – a way of thought. Your very statement that it should be temporary would brand you as a racist in those quarters.

What does InTrade say about how many times Ed will type that sentence before the election?

Quisp on September 15, 2008 at 2:23 PM

I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.

It may be a storybook to Biden. For Bill Clinton it’s a fairytale.

Has there been a moment yet where you wonder if he doesn’t?

Jim Treacher on September 15, 2008 at 2:49 PM

P.S. For the record and Mr. Biden’s information, Barak Obama is multi-racial, not black.

highhopes on September 15, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Careful. If you go by that criteria, most self identified “Blacks” aren’t black.
Most of the population has at least some Caucasian ancestry–hybrids.

Count to 10 on September 15, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Really, why? Were his words “code” for some other purpose, or do you think that he didn’t really mean them as they have been interpreted?

Jaibones on September 15, 2008 at 12:43 PM

I think people (conservatives) misinterpret his words in that speech. They see it as some sort of invalidation of any consideration of race.

Isn’t saying “vote for Obama because he is black” just as racist as saying “vote for McCain because he is white”?

deepdiver on September 15, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Barack says the economy of G. Bush is the worst since the depression.

Poor Obama, the economy is really bad and he lives in a racist country. He only raised 66 million dollars in September. If the US wasn’t racist and poor he would have raised 660 million. Poor Barak, every one say AWWWWWWWWW.

Allow me to address if I may:

Harvard Graduation: The state that academia is in is disturbing. Graduating from Harvard may look great on paper, but ANY STUDENT OF ANY UNIVERSITY STUDYING LAW has an equal opportunity for excellence regardless of the ivy league status of the university.

You may argue apples and oranges on this point, but the top 10 IT engineers and research persons across the world went to common, regionally accredited schools, one doesn’t even have a degree. None of them went to MIT, or some school of equal reputation.

State Senator: Obama had votes purchased for him via his hatemongering network of Black Lib. Theology pastors and crooked real estate associates in addition to domestic terrorist organization links.

U.S. Senator: See above. Add 140+ “present” votes.

Only a realist would say that Obama has gotten where he is by a combination of the following: He cheated. He’s become the DNC’s puppet, the media put him on a pedestal, and he’s black.

Deal with the facts, leftie.

McCain got where he is because he’s a P.O.W., because he worked with Reagan, and because he has taken a few shots at his own party. He’s made quite a few personal mistakes in his life, but generally he’s worked for what he has.

Palin got where she is by herself. Not a soul in the world helped her get that V.P. nomination. She’s popular now because the media has ravaged her and her family, while they’ve made every attempt to sweep, mop, wax, and buff the yellow brick road for Obama.

You have a piss poor argument, friend.

Barack Hussein Obama constantly plays the race-card with the condescending remarks like ‘I don’t look like the other Presidents on money… and ‘They’ll tell you he’s black… references.

DANEgerus on September 15, 2008 at 6:10 PM

What else could be expected from Binden?

After all he made the famous 7-11 comment and doesn’t even recognize the racism in it.

The Dems are so full of them selves they don’t see the racism in their comments.

BTW, didn’t Obama’s campaign ban Black people from the stage behind “The One” at campaign stops?

That’s racist too!
