Video: SNL on Palin

Surprisingly good. I thought Fey would coast on her physical resemblance but she’s got the accent down well enough to have made me laugh at her first line. How long did she spend in front of the mirror this week saying “Alaska,” I wonder.
Never mind the debate over the Bush Doctrine: That line about being able to see Russia really was the worst moment of the Gibson interview. Worthy of a running gag, which is probably what it’ll end up being.

Actually I thought it was kind of funny and if you noticed the audience’s reaction they were more kind to the Palin portrayal than to Hillary’s.

I thought that it was funny.
Keep talking about those dinosaurs. SP’s statements on that were pretty clear.

Foaming-at-the-mouth Follywood leftists.
jgapinoy on September 14, 2008 at 10:55 AM
That’s probably true. Which is a pity as it was the end of an answer, not the answer, as the clipped interview makes it appear to be.
Spirit of 1776 on September 14, 2008 at 10:57 AM
It was edited…
GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?
PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.
Cut by ABC…
GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing in Georgia?
PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relationship with our allies, pressuring, also, helping us to remind Russia that it’s in their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along.

Of course they can be “hard” on Hillary – she’s not running for anything.
Hannibal Smith on September 14, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Meh. They skewered Hillary just as much as they did Palin. SNL skewers everyone, you just hope they do it equally.
Red Cloud on September 14, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Funny stuff. It’s funny to me because it’s poking fun at the caricature they have of Sarah, not what I perceive to be the real person, so I had no problem laughing with them. It’s the same with Pohler’s Hillary. I especially liked the “I support Barack Obama….as you can see by this pin.” line.
Texan on September 14, 2008 at 10:59 AM
I don’t think it was. In context with what else she said but was hacked off the interview (bolded below), it worked just fine, although on its own it does sound weak.
Hmm. Wonder why ABC cut out relevant portions of her interview then, since I’m certain they’d want to allow for a fair viewing of her answers, right?
PALIN: I do believe unprovoked and we have got to keep our eyes on Russia, under the leadership there. I think it was unfortunate. That manifestation that we saw with that invasion of Georgia shows us some steps backwards that Russia has recently taken away from the race toward a more democratic nation with democratic ideals. That’s why we have to keep an eye on Russia.
And, Charlie, you’re in Alaska. We have that very narrow maritime border between the United States, and the 49th state, Alaska, and Russia. They are our next door neighbors. We need to have a good relationship with them. They’re very, very important to us and they are our next door neighbor.
GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?
PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.
GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing in Georgia?
PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia. Some of it was pretty funny – and Tina Fey did a great job as an imitator.
Perfect line and delivery from “Hillary” after Tina’s “Can you believe it, Hillary?”
LOL
Some unfair things were in there though, esp the dinosaur crack (which appears to have gone over most of the audience’s head) and the slur about not knowing what the Bush Doctrine was (which didn’t, obviously). Weirdos.
inviolet on September 14, 2008 at 10:59 AM
So where is the tag line that the Governor of Alaska has to oversee the management of missile sites that protect our country from Russia, and, as a result she has to be briefed on National Security reports?
Does anybody have the guts to report this?

…. she didn’t know what the Bush doctrine is?!
Oh how awful!!
But… you know what the dirty little nuanced secret here is, regarding her technical ignorance of the Bush doctrine?
Answer: She’s not from Washington, and, more importantly she’s not a third term of George W. Bush.
The MSM by guffawing over this, inadvertantly gives the impression that works in Palin’s favor.
Mcguyver on September 14, 2008 at 11:10 AM
One note song. Thanks for playin’.
I guess Fey can go back to her box office bombs, now.
The only positive is the SNL viewer demographic slacks a lot when it comes to voting, too.
Gee, I can’t wait for the skit trashing Charlie Gibson or Herr Ubermann.
And wait.
And wait.
Did I mention ‘wait’?

trader67 on September 14, 2008 at 11:13 AM
I thought that WAS Palin for a second. Funny stuff.
and the slur about not knowing what the Bush Doctrine was (which didn’t, obviously).
Kind of curious, how have you guys spun it so that Palin DID know what the Bush Doctrine was during the interview.
If you look at the interview, it’s pretty obvious she didn’t know what it was…
“His worldview?”
Then when Gibson clarified he was referring to the foreign policy Bush put into place in 2002, she responded with foreign policy platitudes about terrorists being out to get us.
She didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine was. You all can say there are complexities to the Bush Doctrine and all this stuff. But if Palin had known ANYTHING about it, she could have addressed that and said “well, as I understand the Bush Doctrine…” or “there are many facets to the Bush Doctrine” or “when most people hear Bush Doctrine, they think of the policy that the US has the right to attack a country BEFORE they become a viable threat to us…”
But she didn’t, she just babbled about Bush going after terrorists. Someone somewhere put it best. If you’re interested in football — you’re a football fan — and someone says “what do you think about the whole Favre thing” you’re going to know that the “favre thing” refers to him retiring, deciding to come back, the weird stand off with Green Bay and finally his trade to the Jets. And you’ll have some sort of opinion on it. You may not know every detail of it — what the NFL rules about reinstatement are, etc…, but you’ll know enough to have an opinion.
If you’re a fan of politics — if you’re interested in politics, and someone says “What you do you think of the Bush Doctrine?” You’ll know at the very least that it’s most controversial and well-known aspect is the “preemptive strike” part. You may know more or less, but the name with definitely register and you’ll have some sort of opinion on it.
It didn’t register with Palin. She didn’t know what it was. For a vice presidential candidate to not know what the basis for a controversial and historic shift in our foreign policy is… not good.
Tom_Shipley on September 14, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Meh.
SNL is what it is – Blue State political satire that occasionally amuses when it manages to be evenhanded and tries not to take itself too seriously.
Lisa Nova’s first Sarah Palin video is comedy gold and brilliant satire. Her second video jumped the shark. This one is funny in some places but the bit with the crib notes on her hand jumped the shark again.
If she can find her stride, Lisa could harvest gold for the next 16 years, as her Sarah Palin impression is every bit as good as Tina’s.
ManlyRash on September 14, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Still…she’s far more qualifed for the office of VP than Obama is.
ManlyRash on September 14, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Depends on who did the initial provoking. If Russia’s militia proxies in South Ossetian were nibbling at Georgian civilians, it becomes a chicken or egg question. Is it provocation when a government responds to rebel attacks, if those rebels have Russian passports?
a capella on September 14, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Obama cancelled because he knew he’d be upstaged by the Sarah Palin lookalike.
andycanuck on September 14, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Yup, she hit many of the biggest myths about SP.
“She can see Russia from Alaska” as a substantive answer to a question when due to malicious editing it was a small part of a larger answer.
She’s a religious nut.
That the “Bush Doctrine” has a specific meaning which it doesn’t and she didn’t know what it was (how could she)
“Beauty queen”
“Anyone can be president” ; “question a female politician’s credentials”, when her credentials compare favorably to Barack “I, I, I, uh, uh, uh” Obama’s, and when would SNL joke about Obama’s credentials?
“Ask this one about dinosaurs” They had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for this internet rumor SP believes dinosaurs were alive only 4000 years old.
The clip had its moments. They both are talented comedians, especially Amy Poehler, have to give them that.

Whaaaaa! People are crybabying over a SKIT! Waaaaaa!
Dave Rywall on September 14, 2008 at 11:19 AM
No, not never mind, you just brought it up. There is no government department or agency including the White House from which to request a copy of the “Bush Doctrine,” because it is not an official document, its an invention of the media. It is a vague term used to encompass all things Bush, real or perceived, with no definite meaning. Here are some examples of people that don’t know what the Bush Doctrine is.
1. Charlie Gibson
2. George W. Bush
3. Allahpundit
4. Maxx
5. Anyone who claims they know what the Bush Doctrine is.
Some here say that part was edited out, I don’t remember. But in any case if that was the worst part, then she did great. I bet you can see Russia from Alaska, the USA purchased Alaska from Russia. Being that close to a potential enemy probably brings more clarity to the importants of the relationship, just like she says.
Maxx on September 14, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Paul-Cincy on September 14, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Why is the Georgia-Russia matter even open to debate among Americans? It’s a double standard for the U.S. to have to morally defend its foreign policy, while our competitors can do whatever they want, without offering real justification, and then just say they did it to counter us.
Now, let’s figure out how best to do that without selling out to the Russians.
Tommygun on September 14, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Chicost84 on September 14, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Sorry, Tom. Even Gibson got it wrong. You can’t bail him out on this one. It’s really a shame the full transcripts are available or this would be a slam dunk for you. why in the world was ABC so stupid as to demonstrate their selective editing? You folks are usually more sly than that.
a capella on September 14, 2008 at 11:23 AM
No, not really.
Charlie Gibson’s Gaffe: Charlie Gibson got it wrong — there is no single meaning of the Bush Doctrine.

Ok, the second video wasn’t funny AT ALL.
nickj116 on September 14, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Moved from other board on identical story (why does Hotair keep doing this?):
The problem is that when a comedian drills someone for something stupid they said, the audience assumes the truth that the statement was made in the first place .. otherwise, where’s the funny?
Chevy Chase did Gerald Ford tripping because Gerald Ford tripped. Wouldn’t have been funny if the public perception of Gerald Ford were one of coordination and grace.
The ’stupid’ jokes presuppose that she’s stupid, and the more that happens, the more it becomes an accepted notion.
Overly-analytical?
Yes.
True?
Hell, I don’t know, I’m just bored.

Guardian on September 14, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Edited Gibson interview of Palin here. A couple of points on “you can see Russia from Alaska”. She was reduxing McCain’s point that Palin had experience with Russia because she governed a state that bordered Russia, and it was part of her larger answer on Russia and the Russia/Georgia conflict. Out of context, the stand-alone quote makes her sound like an airhead. In context, it makes much more sense.

Another chunk of Palin’s allegedly-thin resume disappears into the Memory Hole. Two years ago, she was out of public office, having resigned her position as chair and ethics supervisor of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, over Republican corruption that was being swept under the rug.
And she was a candidate to unseat the Republican incumbent governor who she thought was using the broom. Once she got in office, she used the broom to sweep out a bunch of bureaucrats.
The Monster on September 14, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Just for the sake of argument, let’s say you are right. If she looks foolish in the debate against Biden you will look preceptive. But if she wins the debate against Biden, and you will note Biden has already begun to lower expectations, that will indicate one of two things: either she did understand the policy and was fleshing out a gotcha question, or she is an extremely quick study in foreign policy.
Then when you contrast that with Mr. Experience thinking we should throw 200 million bones to Iran with no conditions as a way of saying, “we’re weak” as part of his foreign policy insights, I think she’s going to hold up very nicely thanks.
She has shown extreme capacity, not tenure, at everything she’s put her hand to. I’m not concerned whatsoever in her judgment.

Preemptive strikes, which is what you and Charlie Gibson seem to the the Bush Doctrine is, are hot a shift in our policy, let alone historic or controversial. I’d suggest reviewing the history of American military offensives and comparing them to the list of those who struck us first. Also, the interview doesn’t suggest that she’s unfamiliar with the policy.

And yes, I do think Palin had heard of the Bush Doctrine, I just think she wanted a clarification from Gibson because she thought he was trying to trap her. Geee. I wonder why she would think something like that.
It might have something to do with the fact that the majority of the American people think the media is trying to get Obama elected.

I also have always gotten the feeling that AllahPundit doesn’t want Republicans to win in November. Only a RINO could look at the Sarah Palin as an idiot SNL skit and think it is “surprisingly good.”
I’ve noticed that the better Republicans are doing with McCain and Palin, the grumpier and more depressed AllahPundit gets. No wonder Michelle hired Ed Morrisey to counter him.

It’s just a figment of his imagination….
I mean, give him some slack….. I feel sorry for the

Tina Fey isn’t as pretty as Palin.

Supporting Obama “as evidenced by this button”. Great line.

As for the Russia remark, not only was edited, it is the truth. You can see Russia from Alaska. Oh but Romney would not have said anything like that. No sireee. The problem is no one would care what Romney said. No interviews, no talk, no skit, no interest. No bounce. No win.

When I watched this last night I was starting to feel grumpy, not offended, but grumpy about the Russia and the dinosaur comments then I remembered the skit they did about “President” Obama calling Hillary at 3am and crying and saying he was not ready for the job (Hillary/Pohler famously told him to “Man-up”)- so SNL has poked fun at the Messiah too. Lighten up people.

That Charlie Gibson interview is going to bite ABC on the ass again, and again over the next year. The stupid lefties just don’t do BASIC research! Palin actually DOES have some foreign policy chops and, CHARLIE GIBSON, and almost ALL of America missed it! Shhhhhh! That’s the OCTOBER SURPRISE, courtesy of McCain/Palin! Hehehehehe. The character that TINA FEY does is still in the perliminary stages, I expect that it’ll get more factual and funny as time passes, McCain and Palin, BOTH, have a sense of humor!
