Video: SNL on Palin

posted at 10:50 am on September 14, 2008 by Allahpundit

Surprisingly good. I thought Fey would coast on her physical resemblance but she’s got the accent down well enough to have made me laugh at her first line. How long did she spend in front of the mirror this week saying “Alaska,” I wonder.

Never mind the debate over the Bush Doctrine: That line about being able to see Russia really was the worst moment of the Gibson interview. Worthy of a running gag, which is probably what it’ll end up being.

Update: A new one from Lisa Nova, too.

My concern is; how’s it gonna look when she draws two or three times the crowd size that McCain does…?

J_Gocht on September 14, 2008 at 1:56 PM

It’s going to look like she’s more popular than McCain… so what?

Maxx on September 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Hey guys,

Comment on the Lindsay Lohan blog trash talking Sarah Palin…

All you need is a myspace account which you can make really easy if you don’t have one already. It’s time tell those narcissistic liberal Hollywood morons what the average American thinks about being preached to by them.

I laughed hard at the Palin sketch but had to turn it off after some of the other stuff.. They were awful. Phelps doesn’t need to quit his day job. I really wanted to like him!

I think SNL does a good job of getting both sides for the most part. The sketch they did of Barry getting lobbed softballs by the media was pretty funny.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Maxx on September 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

I know how I’d handle that problem Maxx.

I’d schedule Sarah for smaller closed venues where they could keep the crowd size limited and controlled.

When it comes to John I’d schedule him for larger amphitheaters and open air gatherings where the crowd size wouldn’t be limited by the physical size of the site selection.

This would allow the top of the ticket to look much better than his sidekick…!

You have too at all costs; maintain the respect for Senator McCain, that he so richly deserves.

J_Gocht on September 14, 2008 at 2:20 PM

The guy that played Nancy = funny!
Hartman as Reagan = Great!
Carvey as Bush = Funny!
That guy that played Clinton = Funny!
Ferrel as Bush = Hilarious!

SNL nowadays is not funny. Palin, Obama, and Hillary characters are all bombs. The writing sucks and the actors just don’t have what it takes.

You know… this is ridiculous! Does it matter if Obama knows the Bush Doctrine? Or McCain? Or Joe Biden? And knowing the Bush Doctrine will improve their understanding on Foreign Affairs how?

I get so sick of people (scratch that, GOP members) allowing the media to define the argument, relevance, and importance on all matters related to this campaign. I fail to see how it’s important for any of them to understand the Bush Doctrine (which as a matter of course has been basically EVERY FREAKING COUNTRY’S prerogative since the dawn of time, and additionally democratic nation building might have been how the Roman Empire expanded to its vastness, but I digress). The ONLY time it’s relevant is if it is a treaty or statue voted by Congress and rooted in US and International Law required to be followed by every presiding president OR BARRING THAT BEING THE FACT, if either campaign intends to proceed under the Bush Doctrine’s policies. We already know that Obama doesn’t and as far as McCain, he has yet to agree 100% on ANYTHING Bush has done regarding TWOT to your and my consternation. Palin ONLY needs to know the McCain Doctrine and that’s about it because THAT will, in fact, be the policy they will apply after 1/2009 when it comes to International Relations!

Well you let us righties worry about all of that because your manufactured problem is no problem at all. Nobody is denying that Palin is more popular than McCain, its a fact and its a good thing not a bad thing.

Maxx on September 14, 2008 at 2:41 PM

You’d think they’d be less worried about Palin being more popular than McCain than about Palin being more popular than Obama.

You always crack me up, Jim.

Bob's Kid on September 14, 2008 at 3:17 PM

To the point about the video: I found plenty of humorous points and was not all freaked out about the digs against Palin. If this is part of the price of having a VPOTUS from Alaska, I can deal with that. ;-)

itzWicks on September 14, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Fey and Poehler (sp?) were pretty darned good. Lisa Nova sucked.

urbancenturion on September 14, 2008 at 3:25 PM

I thought Obama Waffles was pretty funny too, though!

Palin aide says Sarah thought the skit was funny.

SouthernGent on September 14, 2008 at 3:46 PM

The first video was good. The second one was awful.

Even though SNL was making fun of Palin, her caricature still comes out looking and sounding better than HRC’s.

Reaps on September 14, 2008 at 3:52 PM

The Palin/Hillary SNL opening was clever and tongue in cheek humorous. There’d be nothing to smile about unless taking or giving a jab; and they were evenly dosed.

Lisa Nova’s attempt is so completely lopsided, it is too stupid to be funny. In reality, Gibson in fact did NOT out perform Palin. So if Lisa Nova wants to hit the humor mark, she has to dish Gibson’s performance the same level of silliness as Palin took at Nova’s hand. But since Nova’s portrayal vaulted Gibson to the pinnacle of Lord Knowitall when Krauthammer proved Gibson’s professional ineptitude, it leaves Nova’s product in the shits.

As to taking puns with a sense of humor, all’s well and good so long as not much time is spent GIVING attention to the wrong topic (Got Lipstick?), stuck on stupid ignoring major occurrences in the world. Lipstick, on its own merit, ain’t gonna get anyone elected or not elected. People generally might laugh or grimace at a joke, but not likely determine life’s fate accordingly.

Current international and domestic catastrophes are always TO THE POINT OF RELEVANCE and need ISSUE ANSWERS from politicians. That so many people (Obama supporters) could be so dense as to accept “change” as a solution only proves our opposing responsibility to CLARIFY the choice between change(s) to either Lose Security/Gain Security.

REFINE THE TARGET SLOGAN: Keep it simple. It must simultaneously disprove Obama-Biden while proving McCain-Palin. Draw the cartoons. The best response to Gibson’s interview with Palin is the cartoon portraying his obnoxiously inappropriate attempt to stuff his ugly jargon into Palin’s mouth.

OBAMA, THE TROJAN HORSE can run as many times as Obama makes a promise; each illustration filled with either the vultures behind the promises or the specific American downfall to be experienced as a result of submitting to Obama.

PALIN, NOAH’S ARK. America is like Noah’s Ark, and the world is full of dangerous challenges. As a nation, the rule of law provides means to endure the storms and challenges that as a nation we must deal with in order to survive.

It’s a thought.

maverick muse on September 14, 2008 at 4:08 PM

It was funny the way SNL had to carefully skirt the real object of Hillary Clinton’s ire. Must never link the One’s name with words like sexism.

RAB on September 14, 2008 at 4:12 PM

That was hilarious!

I thought Palin would have gotten abused on SNL, but they nailed it with that skit. Fey did a great job.

And Tina, honey, Sarah looks good on you!

Palin aide says Sarah thought the skit was funny.

SouthernGent on September 14, 2008 at 3:46 PM

The first thing I thought was that she would get a chuckle from it. Strong, confident people tend to enjoy a good laugh at themselves.

Saltysam on September 14, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Those were both funny… but I’m really sick of the attacks of the “Bush Doctrine” crap. As Krauthammer, Rove, and others have explained, it was a bullsh** gotcha, and Charlie Gibson didn’t even know what it was. He chose his favorite of 4 possible definitions – not the original one and not the most recent one either.

RightWinged on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Shockah!

SNL pulled every bit the hit job I expected.

Screw ’em. Gov. Palin will laugh last, and, from what I understand, that’s the best laugh of them all.

SuperCool on September 14, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Does anybody have the guts to report this?

Mcguyver on September 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM

No.

Django on September 14, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Pretty funny and in no way offensive or off-putting, unless you have a chip on your shoulder, imho.

Gov Palin needs to take page out of the GHWB playbook. We all know how devastatingly funny Dana Carvey’s take on 41 was. out of this world funny.

Did Bush get his Yale underoos in a bunch over it? No. He turned goat piss into gasoline and made a friend of Carvey. Bush had him in the WH more than once, and invited him to Camp David as well. The two are still friends, and you dont see Carvey crapping on 43 or Laura or Baabs or the kids.

Sarah should give Tina Fey the full monty of girl-luv. This will be a no-lose situation: if Fey gets to know her and falls under the Gov’s spell of immense charm, it will be harder for SNL to relfexively slam her. If Fey gets the friend treatment, and it becomes known in the world of pop culture as it almost certainly will, SNL will look like classless asshats if they trash Palin unfairly.

Prediction: Palin will make an SNL appearance before the election, alongside Tina Fey playing Palin. If it happens it wil be a HUGE hit.

Mike D. on September 14, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Well we have just won the election now!!!!Just out Lindsey[a.k.a. the lesbian slut]Lohann and Pamela[a.k.a.slut ho extrodinare]Anderson dont like Sarah very much, because she is a real woman. With this trailer trash against us,victory is inevitable!!!Semper Fi

Tina is getting ready to get some real job security… as if she didn’t have it already you hot little thing you…

p.s. call me Tina…

Kaptain Amerika on September 14, 2008 at 6:49 PM

I agree with nottakingsides–not funny. Tina Fey is so over-rated it should be illegal.

Both videos reaked. Didn’t laugh once.

Conservatives R Us on September 14, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Just watched the whole show on Tivo:
I count about 6 Palin jokes, including one really obnoxios slam on Alaska Joe…..

Hillary sketch makes Hillary look Bad.

NO Obama jokes, no Messiah, no stuttering, no Jeremiah Wright…

Come on Lorne, you have always hit both sides, Al Gore is one of you best of all time…….hit BOTH Obama and McCain. In fact…do the whole foursome….it will be hilarious.

Dpet on September 14, 2008 at 7:33 PM

I didn’t get a chuckle out of either one, and I couldn’t even make it through the second one. The point seemed to be that Palin was stupid.

Give me Treacher. Or Iowahawk. Someone funny. Heck, I’ll be happy to laugh at myself and my own side. But this stuff was stilted and not very funny.

DaMav on September 14, 2008 at 9:00 PM

“Lisa Nova” should have Been making fun of the Gibson’s ridiculous questions, and Edits.

Chakra Hammer on September 14, 2008 at 10:30 PM

I thought Tina Fey had the accent down at the first line, but it wore a bit thin as the skit went on IMO, but funny overall. I thought Lisa Nova’s sucked, unlike her first one. This one was just too libtard harsh to be funny to me.

aikidoka on September 14, 2008 at 11:06 PM

That SNL skit was fun, fun, funny, despite their portraying my girl Sarah as dim-witted. Too bad, lefties, she’s not!

But why does “Sarah” have her actual accent, and “Hillary” not so much???? Hmmmm, I wonder!

eucher on September 14, 2008 at 11:14 PM

Palin portrayed as dimwitted.

Clinton portrayed as a manic nutcase.

Works fine for me, its not as if they made one look any better than the other.

“I Picked a Girl”. Actually not bad, but the Palin impersonator might, shall we say, consider knocking off the mooseburgers for awhile.

Tommygun on September 15, 2008 at 3:42 AM

Lisa Nova…not so funny. SNL…LMAO….still.

Kat_Mo on September 15, 2008 at 4:27 AM

i can’t stop watching it!!!!!!!!!! i thought it was great. funny stuff all around.

and yes…. they need to poke some fun at obama!

unmeritedfavor on September 15, 2008 at 9:42 AM

Sarah Palin may be able to see Russia from where she stands, but I can’t watch Hulu from where I am (Europe, that is).

Witteman on September 15, 2008 at 12:51 PM

And…
I don’t think I like Lisa Nova’s type of satire very much.

Witteman on September 15, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Prediction: Palin will make an SNL appearance before the election, alongside Tina Fey playing Palin. If it happens it wil be a HUGE hit.

NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! A thousand times NO!!!

I have said this before many, many times w.r.t. Bush and his administration.
I do not want my elected leaders engaging in the ultimate form of common pander by appearing on SNL or any other media fueled by our weak-minded popular culture.

I demand a respect for the offices sought by our leaders, and that begins with not acting like clowns and buffoons to entertain us. Stay off “The View”, stay off “Oprah”, stay off “SNL” , “E!” , or “MTV”.

Nod approvingly from the wings if you find it humorous, respond vigorously if you are slandered or smeared, but otherwise remain well-above the level of behavior that would only diminish the office that you seek.
