Majority rules: McCain 50, Obama 47 at Rasmussen; Update: Dead even in Minnesota?

This is their three-day tracker, which means it incorporates two full days of reaction to Thursday night’s Charlie Gibson interview. As usual, the difference lies in the ratio of McCainocrats to Obamicans, something you’d never know from the media’s coverage of The One’s supposed post-partisan appeal:

McCain is viewed favorably by 57% of the nation’s voters while Obama earns positive reviews from 53%… McCain is supported by 90% of Republicans and has a six-point edge among unaffiliated voters. Eighty-two percent (82%) of Democrats say they’ll vote for Obama…

The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator shows McCain leading in states with 200 Electoral College votes while Obama has the edge in states with 193 votes. When “leaners” are included, shows Obama leading 259-247…

Rasmussen weights by party, which they’ve pegged this week at 38.7% Democrat and 33.6% Republican. If they’re lowballing GOPers — and they may well be — then Maverick’s lead is bigger than this suggests. Question, though: How’s night two of the Gibson interview going to play? Night one got more attention online because blogs spend most of their time on foreign policy, but for much of the public the exchanges on social policy will be their first clue that she doesn’t support abortion in cases of rape and incest, strongly favors gun rights, etc. That’s fine for conservatives, but note well the margin in the blockquote among unaffiliateds. Hmmm.

Here’s new vid from Carson City, her first solo appearance on the trail. If you’re bored watching her deliver the same speech at every stop, the crowds very much aren’t. Must-reading from Politico:

Many wore buttons just purchased from vendors outside the pavilion — a pink “You Go Girl” was a favorite — and some sported shirts paying homage to the most memorable line in her convention speech, “McCain-Palin ‘08” with the “O” as a pair of red lips.

Asked why they liked her, voters said little about issues but rather focused on Palin’s personal qualities and compelling life story.

“PTA, Soccer Mom, that kind of stuff,” explained Luann Tiner.

“She’s the only candidate of all four who can actually shoot an assault rifle,” chimed in her husband, Ken…

Blake and Shay Johnson of Reno were even more plain-spoken…

They said that it was the first time they attended a political event and that they had just given a financial contribution to the campaign.

“That’s how excited she’s made us feel,” Shay Johnson said.

Update: Oh my. CNN had Obama by 12 in Minnesota just before the GOP convention.

Minnesota has become a battleground in a presidential campaign that has dramatically tightened nationwide.

A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll shows that the race is now a dead heat between Barack Obama and John McCain, each supported by 45 percent of likely voters in the state…

The poll found that McCain has made gains across the board since a May Minnesota Poll that showed him trailing by 13 points. He has picked up considerable support among men and to a lesser degree among women. He also has boosted his standing with whites, young voters and all levels of household income and education.

Palinmania is only a marginal factor, surprisingly, with 30 percent saying it makes them more likely to vote for McCain and 26 percent saying less likely.

MN Senate: Past the Primaries, Coleman and Franken Tie … And Dean Barkley Holds The Key To Outcome:

In an election for United States Senate today, 09/14/08, 51 days to the election, Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and DFL candidate Al Franken tie, according to this exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, WDIO-TV in Duluth, KAAL-TV in Rochester, and KSAX-TV in Alexandria.

They’re gonna let Barry eat Ban Jovi’s rubber chicken and raise cash….they are gonna go canvas the battleground states and run a Reagan style grassroots.

Barry cannot rely on “Scarnton” to generate the heat Palin or McCain does so it is a two on one ground game….

I like our chances.

A few days ago after dropping my two little boys off at school I drove back to our house. It’s somewhat in a country area yet, and has a mile and a half straight stretch of road with a 90 degree left turn at the end.

Well, as I drove past the turn, I saw a car in the ditch sideways with 5 young men in it that happened to to be black. I pulled over and asked the driver if everyone was OK and if he had called someone yet to help them out. No, he didn’t know anyone.

I have my mechanic and tow truck driver in my cell phone address book and called for help. (If you drive classic cars, it’s a must).

After helping them out I said “Oh, by the way, vote for McCain/Palin in Nov. guys”. Their first response was “Hey man I hope it’s NOT a race thing with ya dude?”

It most always is a “race thing” with them don’t you know.

Over.

People keep saying Palin, Palin. Palin helped by getting people to pay attention to McCain’s speech.

McCain’s speech at the Republican convention I think did a lot to bring independents and moderates on board. I think many of them looked at McCain and said: “This guy actual has bucked his party, and is even doing so at his own nominating convention- Obama’s never done anything like that.”

Getting the huge audience to watch Mav certainly didn’t hurt. My brother is a former Nader voter in Portland, OR who is now voting for McCain. This is an unusual year in politics.

fiatboomer on September 14, 2008 at 1:46 PM

Rush has said several times not to pay attention to the polls until the last week and even then they may not tell the whole story and he even mentioned the Bradley effect. This racism mantra is going to backfire. And them pulling lock, stock and barrel out of Georgia is proof positive the racism theory is not working despite their hardheaded insistence we in the South are bunch of racists for not voting for THE ONE. And McCain is just now starting to spend large money in Florida FYI.

So while this is good news, I too am with everyone that says we need to sledgehammer home the differences between US and the MARXIST party. We need to reduce our message down to something Joe and Jane America can understand. They already know WE want to lower taxes, but THE ONE MANCHILD COMMUNITY ORGANIZER is claiming he has a better tax plan and Greenspan is out there campaigning for THE MESSIAH’S tax plan over McCain’s. If most of the lower tax bracket around $40K is already not paying taxes, and technically THE ONE’S tax plan will tax those that make $105K, then McCain needs to simply spell this out. Our taxes are around 42% and higher for commission checks. McCain needs to cause people to actually look at their pay stubs, and realize how much the feds are taking out of their paychecks. THE ONE cannot speak simply, and that is how McCain/Palin need to speak; very down to earth and to the common people working two jobs to bring in $105K. That $105K are teachers are cops, secretaries and salesmen/women and blue collar workers.

Another way to gain with these voters is to give some specific examples of where they see reform needs to take place first; name an agency or government branch and why they should be targeted. Mentioning the need for a DO SOMETHING CONGRESS, and a line item veto might also help with these voters. BE SPECIFIC GOP!

I believe McCain’s convention bio & speech were the turning point for people who are not news or politics junkies, aka centrists & undecided voters. Palin energizes the conservative base on issues and draws undecided voters with her life story & genuineness. Also, McCain & Palin very effectively counter one another’s weaknesses. The two together make a very appealing team.

Don’t you believe that the Blue Dog racist Dems are only in the South. They are all over the place.

My late ex-father-in-law was a nice man, and a strong practicing Catholic. BUT, he’d NEVER vote for a black man. He lived his whole life in Michigan. He was your classic Archie Bunker bigot without all the wisecracking. He’d vote straight party line for Dems his whole life despite the fact that it meant promoting abortion on demand.

Just logged on, so forgive me if I’m repeating what others have said, or simply stating the obvious.

I live in Minnesota. Saw the poll this morning in the Star & Sickle (Mpls. paper) - like I told the wife: “If it’s a tie here, then Obama is getting his (butt) kicked everywhere else in the country.

Purple Minnesota = certain victory for McCain on the national level.

Red Minnesota = landslide of epic proportions.

Steve_Roberts on September 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM

For those who hope for a *red* Michigan, there is some likelihood of that happening.

The “Palin-effect” could be a very real number in a state that the Dems have trashed through the terms of Jenny Penny.

In this out-of-the-way part of the state I have seen more and more women taking up hunting, fishing, solo-hiking and outdoor photography in remote areas.

The move toward this has been helped along by a program from the MDNR called BOW, Becoming an Outdoor Women. It has been very successful.

They will be going to vote 11 days before the “unofficial state holiday”, aka the Opening of Firearms Deer Season. :-)

USA TODAY

Biden prepares for bigger campaign role

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP) — Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden is planning a more prominent role to help validate Barack Obama among white working-class voters and criticize the Republican rival he has long called a friend.

Biden’s focus will be on McCain, not Palin, campaign officials say. They are calculating that the election will be determined on voters’ feelings about Obama and McCain. Biden is in a unique position to help convince voters that McCain is the wrong choice, they say, because of a relationship that goes back even beyond their 22 years of working together in the Senate.

William Amos on September 14, 2008 at 2:03 PM

manlyrash: Let’s remember G. Ferraro was fired by the Clinton campaign for suggesting if a white, latino or asian person having the same ludicrous “qualifications” as Obama, had announced his/her cadidacy for POTUS, that person would have beenl aughed off the stage immediately .

I just bet you, to her dying day Clinton will regret firing Ferraro for what was an obviously and factually correct comment. However, being “politically correct” was more important to Hillary than facing the truth and running with it - until too late!……Serves her right.

alwyr on September 14, 2008 at 2:03 PM

We have had 8 years of increasing shrill attacks against conservatives & Republicans, and 2 years of Obama worship, not just from Democrats in office, but the MSM “news” sites, and far too many Hollywood stars, college professors, public school teachers, private non-profits, and union bosses. So, McCain/Palin are having to fight against all of that, yet they are still in the lead and have a solid shot at winning, and possibly by a large enough margin to help Republicans throughout the rest of the country.

This is what amazes me: That Americans can pick their way through all the liberal garbage being tossed at them. And that makes me proud to be an American and still hopeful for our country.

Loxodonta on September 14, 2008 at 2:08 PM

a capella on September 14, 2008 at 2:29 PM

If Sarah faces the abortion issue do the following:

1) Honestly state your personal beliefs like she did with ABC, including that she does not believe in abortion for rape or incest.

2) State that the abortion issue is also a Constitutional issue.

3) State that the abortion issue resides with the SCOTUS.

4) State that even if Roe vs. Wade were overturned, it would move to the states due to the 10th Amendment.

5) If decided by the states, the overwhelming number of states would probably allow abortion to varying degrees and some would even allow MORE liberal abortion laws.

6) But, absent a constitutional amendment, I believe the issue resides with the states and the legislatures via the people.

I would not be paying too much attention to those *experts*. They do not venture up here to ask us and they believe that nothing has, or will, change since we are too backward to get our news any other way than from the dead-tree-pulp we send south for them to use.

What has always been a very blue UP is changing. I have heard recently about a lot of closet Republicans making noise around here. And I can verify that there are a bunch of women who are independents who are not happy with the Democrats, and there are a lot of Democratic women who are deeply offended and really pissed off at the Obama campaign.

Because of our long winters, and low population density we are probably a lot more like Alaska than like downstate- Michigan. There are a lot of people here who recognize a Sarah Palin, and more importantely, relate to that.

Also, a final note: the Bradley Effect is alive and well in da UP.

It’s called vetting, and because she is such a surprise, the vetting is taking place in an extremely compressed mode.

I like the ‘irrational exuberance’ remark earlier. So many people are so high on Palin without really knowing much. It’s like buying a Lamborghini that looks hot and sounds like liquid silk; great fun for a while. Then when it breaks down once a month, and the repairs are soooo expensive…

And Palin will have breakdowns, and people will criticize her properly for not having had some key experiences already, or lacking JUDGEMENT…As Mitt rightly points out, judegement flows from experience, not the other way round.

Shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss any and all criticism, even harsh stuff. We should be willing to make rational judgements based on facts that stand up over time, not FACTS as we see them in the heat of the moment.

Palin may well be the future of the GOP, and it may turn out bright. And she could well be another flameout, burning hot and bright, and before she’s ready to sustain the longburn.

end of rant. Sorry all.

You’re probably not aware of this, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. However, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and several others have been digging into Palin (and others) for several months ahead of the actual selection. Sarah Palin has been on the Conservative watch list for at least the last year, as has Bobby Jindal. McCain gave us Conservatives a gift with this selection, knowing full well that she had been watched closely for quite some time now by those who actually lead our movement. We all know exactly what the Liberal Media is doing with Sarah, and the Liberal Party has a history of doing the exact same thing; it’s called “assassinate the opponent by any and all means necessary, even if it includes fabricating documents to make it so.” Think Dan Rathers and CBS News.

Keemo on September 14, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Keemo on September 14, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Thanks for the response. I am actually well aware of what Hannity and Rush have done, and while it gives another viewpoint, I don’t trust them anymore than the MSM, because they are extremely partisan, and they too engage in fabrications and innuendo and smears; just happens that they do it to the other side and therefore are easier to agree with. However, I don’t trust anyone that partisan. On either side.

It takes a lot of time and un-emotional consideration for me, and so far I’m just not that into her. My discomforts are magnified by the lack of long-term information as to just how she thinks and what she will likely do in any given case not related to abortion.

Can you enumerate instances where Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity enaged in fabrications or smears?

As for not trusting an news source that is not partisan, good luck finding a news source you can trust. These days they are ALL partisan, to one degree or another, as is the nation itself.

Palin is starting to emphasize the line “you can spend your money better than the government can,”

It’s something that McCain/Palin should repeatedly hit The One with, especially in a discussion of his massive new entitlements and his precious socialized health care.

fiatboomer on September 14, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Absolutely correct!

That line and “Drill baby drill!” are two winning lines.

Both are short, simple, and widely popular, and impossible for the Obama camp to counter without long drawn out nuanced Lib-double-talk.

I love this woman! John McCain is leading NOTHING! This woman is!

sabbott on September 14, 2008 at 5:15 PM

I don’t know about that-

McCain sounded impressive in the Columbia Univ forum last week. And Palin is a direct reflection of McCain’s judgement of character. Plus his war record stirs the American sense of heroism.

end of rant. Sorry all.

There was an article posted `on this blog yesterday from the Weekly Standard, “Give ‘em Hell, Sarah, Like Truman, natural born executive.” The author Steve Hayward talks about Jefferson and Adams addressing America’s governing class and the existence of aristoi or natural aristocrats found among citizens of all kinds and who have political virtue and wisdom to manage societal concerns. Sarah Palin’s successes are seemingly effortless, but this makes her detractors say she lacks gravitas and does not undersand the compexity of modern government. Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan come to mind when we see Palin in action. Both men had the primary prerequisites for handling the Presidency well: self-knowledge and humility, power of decision and simplicity toward self-government. I see these qualities in Mrs. Palin. I am in awe of her courage to run and desire to serve. There is a great line in Sarah Palin’s RNC speech of Sept 3 and it is this: “But we are expected to govern with integity, good will, clear convictions, and…a servant’s heart.” I believe she intends to do that.

There’s no way that Dean Barkley has 14% of the vote in Minnesota. When it’s all said and done, he’ll have a decimal between the 1 and the 4. Norm will be fine - he has a lot more ammo to fire.

A fair response that was trailboss. As we move forward from here, please consider these few points.

1> Conservative talk radio, Conservative bloggers, et al, don’t claim to be something they are not. Your previous comments seem to advise us to allow for the vetting process to take place as related to the MSM. My point to you was simply that Conservatives in powerful positions have already been engaged in the process for about (1) year.
2> If you are going to be taken serious here at this site, when making accusations against a Rush Limbaugh or a Sean Hannity (or anybody), you must back up such accusations with links or other forms of evidence. I referred you to Dan Rathers (Rathergate) as an example of just how far the Liberal Media will go to influence elections and public opinion. Rush Limbaugh has never fabricated documents or data that I’m aware of; same applies to Sean Hannity. If you got something there, I’m sure we’d all like to see it. Both of these guys are exactly what they claim to be, Conservative talk radio hosts.

cheers :)

“But we are expected to govern with integrity, good will, clear convictions, and…a servant’s heart.”
Sarah Palin, RNC 9/3/2008

I have it posted on my office door. People who see it say, “That’s the way I wish were.”
Well, it can be.

William Amos: “And for some reason Iowa is going heavy for Obama”

Ethanol.

John “Straight Talk Express” McCain has consistently refused to pander to Iowa on Ethanol.

As far as her stance on abortion goes, I think she will make generally pro-life people take a look at their inconsistency when they support abortion for rape or incest and many will appreciate it. Those who are put off enough to be frightened of her, probably are pro-abortionists anyway and won’t be voting based on that. She’s absolutely right on. I just wish John McCain would take a hint from her and stop being so inconsistent with his support of embryonic stem cell research. It makes no sense to say he believes life begins at conception and then support this.

A few days ago, there was a post about Biden and the word monstrous was used because he said life begins at conception but he supports abortion. I don’t really see that McCain’s stance is much less monstrous. He needs to change that position.

The Catholic Parish where my children go to school is having a series over the next four weeks on Faithful Citizenship. I imagine the same things are happening throughout the country. The intrinsic evils are going to be discussed and that we can not support a candidate who supports them. McCain just opens up the door for left leaners to vote for Obama because they can claim that McCain supports an intrinsic evil too. And he does.

Sarah needs to club him over the head with the butt of her rifle.

“And the professional partisans in the Republican Party needs to appreciate that John McCain is leading a broader resurgence of the Republican brand because of his independence, not in spite of it.”

Bradky on September 14, 2008 at 4:35 PM

The MSM has been running an unprecedented media operation against President Bush for the last 4 years or so. It should hardly be a surprise that his support is low. Of course the support level for the Democrats isn’t any better - look at Congress’s polling numbers.

As for McCain, he’s fought Bush on a number of high profile issues, so the Obama campaign and the MSM can’t make the McSame attacks stick.

Judging by the recent movement in the polls, it looks like the public has wanted a conservative, but not Bush, and McCain-Palin are offering just that.

Obama wouldn’t be a Senator, let alone a serious Presidential candidate if the press had evidenced any serious interest in looking at the many skeletons in his closet.

Now the challenge is to bring these points to the public’s attention with the media doing everything in its power to keep them suppressed.

The other question is, what is the media’s October surprise going to be this year? The last two - Bush’s DUI and the forged Rathergate documents both came close to working.

Read the article — the conservatives alone won’t put a Republican in the WH anymore than the leftwing of the Dems can do it alone.

Obviously that is true, conservatives merely make up a plurality of the voting public, not a majority.
