Everything new is “old” again
posted at 4:30 pm on September 14, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Earlier this week, Barack Obama promised that he would sharpen his attacks on John McCain in response to panicking Democrats watching their gimme election vanishing before their eyes. Instead of coming up with something new, Team Obama has decided to go with an old attack — by calling McCain old. Two days ago, they tried it with the blindingly stupid e-mail ad, and today they’ve apparently farmed the theme out to their surrogates:
On This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., a surrogate for the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., raised the age and health of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., when discussing the qualifications, or lack thereof, of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
McCaskill said she stood by her remarks that she’s “uncomfortable with anyone, regardless of gender, that is going to be vice president to one of the oldest presidents we’ve ever had that has never met a world leader.”
When Stephanopoulos asked her it was fair to raise McCain’s age, McCaskill doubled-down and mentioned his past skin cancer, saying, “I think what we’re talking about is a reality. Other people talk about his melanoma. We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face. This is someone who’s going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. All of us know it. I just think that it’s the facts, George, and that’s something that we need to start focusing on, are the facts, instead of distortions and lies.”
Is age an issue in a presidential candidate? It could be, but McCain is hardly decrepit. His physical disabilities have nothing to do with his age, and his mind is as sharp as ever. In looking at both men, McCain seems to be thriving, while Obama seems to have aged years in the past few months. McCain’s 72 is a lot different than 72 would have been even 24 years ago, when the nation re-elected a 73-year-old Ronald Reagan to a second term.
While it’s not an illegitimate question, it’s not new, either. Voters have known about McCain’s age all through the electoral cycle, and he answered the medical questions in May when he released his medical records — something Obama has yet to do. His prognosis is excellent, and doctors pronounced him in fine shape, which certainly didn’t appear to shock his 96-year-old mother.
This smacks of desperation by Team Obama. They should have learned their lesson when they botched the e-mail ad. It makes them look like they’ve run out of arguments and have to go back to the ones that flopped on their first attempt.

Do you think most of us are 100% McCain backers? We all have our concerns with the Maverick, but Palin gives us some hope.
But is Obama a BETTER alternative? Really?

Do you see now Cindy? And on top of their contest to see who can call troll the most. Can there in all of internetdome be a lower intellectual level blog than this one has become, in the comments anyway? What adult would want to converse with juvenile twits like these? Not me. You know the old saying – when you argue with a twit then eventually you have two twits arguing with each other. Again, no thanks.

Looks like I’ve missed out on a fun thread.
Somebody want to give me the elevator version?
Parting shot — I still think McCain should have invited the Messiah along on McCain’s Grand Canyon hike. Would have been big news when the rescue choppers were called to haul the city slicker off the trail.
desertdweller on September 14, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Yeah Bish, that would do a better job. I was more looking at taking the winds of history out of the “Messiah’s” sails vis a vis being the first black man in history..yadda yadda..

Now, wait. Let’s talk some more. I think that Sen. Obama was sub consciously referring to Gov. Palin because she has knocked him off of his stride. I don’t think that Sen. McCain should have amped it up. I think you could tell from the crowd reaction that a lot of folks thought that is what he meant. As to the children’s sex ed, I happen to be of the opinion that it should be taught at home. The schools should teach biology and health and all that entails through the age progression. I will determine what and how my child is taught about predators. Kids don’t need a lot of in depth information at such a young age. The bill that Sen. Obama voted for was over broad but then so was Sen. McCain’s attack for that vote. You see, isn’t this easy?

The ONLY reason I’m voting for a disloyal and untrustworthy bastard like McCain is because of Palin. I would have voted for nobody in November with Huckabee or Pawlenty on the ticket. I still hate McCain but Palin adds enough sanity to the ticket to be hopeful for the future even if we have to endure cranky old bastard and his left of center schemes concerning amnesty.

If we wait that long then we will have waited far too long. It is the process that gets a nation to that point that starts out like you’ve said – bad, not intolerable. By the time it becomes intolerable, history shows that it has become so entrenched and powerful, that only war can reverse it.

Good point, but it would be better than the “lipstick” response ad. At least it would focus on something irrefutable.
On the whole, I agree though. McCain’s playing in the mud with Obama too much and missing the opportunity to use Obama’s meltdown and the Palinmania attention to push a concrete message. I am thoroughly disappointed that The Lexington Project is almost totally ignored (especially by Obama) and McCain’s sending Obama’s economic plan away in a puff of logic. There’s been too much focus on stupidity and trumped up little stuff and their missing the gaping holes.

The part I saw was about the hearing with General Petreaus (sorry if that’s wrong) and his turn to question. If McCain helps the GOP by making a good choice for VP it is only a second order effect. McCain has no interest in the party and can take or leave it except for the fact he needs it to get elected. The real test will be what happens if he gets elected and how he uses Palin then.

After abandoning his principles, the same guy ditched his poor wife who waiting for him for 5 years for a new sugar mama/ drug addict/ thief; who leveraged her fathers shady connections and inherited wealth to find him a new career with the Keating 5 in Congress. Now he’s running for President after getting spanked by the worst President in history, George Bush”
VS.
“Deprived but brilliant African American struggles though the impossible odds of an elite primary education to become the first black President of Harvard Law. In between, he abandons a promising career on Wall St. to find jobs for everyone on the South Side of Chicago and turned it into a Beverly Hills community with the help of the distinguished humanitarian, Tony Rezco, and the Light of God on Earth, Rev. He later defeated a series of corrupt politicians to become first a state senator, then a US senator. desertdweller on September 14, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Thought for the day. How many here fit this one?
Paul Campos: The parallels between Senator James Inhofe’s [where he asked Gore to take a pledge to use no more energy than most Americans do] criticism of Gore and the “chicken hawk” argument made by opponents of the Iraq war are striking. Consider the hypothetical case of an Iraq war supporter who we’ll call “Jonah.” Jonah posts lots of things on the Internet in which he argues that the Iraq war is the central front in the war on terror, and that the war on terror is a fight for America’s survival.
When critics point out that our military has had to lower admission standards in order to meet recruiting quotas, and that Jonah himself is a healthy man of military age, Jonah replies that he’s contributing to the global war on terror in his own fashion, by posting pro-war arguments on the Internet, attaching a yellow ribbon magnet to his car, and so forth.
This response is just as lame as Gore’s, and in exactly the same way. If you claim we’re facing a huge crisis that requires great personal sacrifice on everyone’s part, but refuse to make any real sacrifice yourself, then your attempts to obscure the latter fact through empty symbolic gestures deserve to be mocked.
It’s obvious what Al and Jonah should each do, given their respective beliefs: Al should radically simplify his lifestyle, and Jonah should join the military.
Yet each of them could also do something that would, in its own way, be almost as impressive: simply confess his hypocrisy and weakness, and implore others to behave differently.
Imagine if Gore were to say, “Yes, I live in a deeply self-indulgent, utterly wasteful fashion. People like me are a very big part of the problem. I’d like to change, but I’m weak. For the sake of our planet, you need to be a stronger person than I’ve been.”
Imagine if Jonah were to say, “Yes, I’m a hypocritical coward, who values his own skin more than America’s survival. And our nation won’t survive if it’s made up of people like me. For everyone’s sake, you need to be more courageous than I’ve been.”
Now those would be inconvenient truths.

ManlyRash, Damiano, Cindy -
Do you think McCain will be a one term president? I do – not because he’ll die, but just because I think he won’t run for a second term.
Although he’s been no party loyalist, frankly, the leaders of the party lost their way. I think Bush was so distracted by 9/11, and so intent on keeping the country safe, that he never played the role of party leader during his term. Absent a clear leader, the Repubs lost their way.
I take McCain’s selection of Palin as a sign that he does care about the party on some level.
I have to say, if Rudy were the nominee right now – with Palin as his VP – I think we’d be way ahead.
