Everything new is “old” again
posted at 4:30 pm on September 14, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Earlier this week, Barack Obama promised that he would sharpen his attacks on John McCain in response to panicking Democrats watching their gimme election vanishing before their eyes. Instead of coming up with something new, Team Obama has decided to go with an old attack — by calling McCain old. Two days ago, they tried it with the blindingly stupid e-mail ad, and today they’ve apparently farmed the theme out to their surrogates:
On This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., a surrogate for the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., raised the age and health of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., when discussing the qualifications, or lack thereof, of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
McCaskill said she stood by her remarks that she’s “uncomfortable with anyone, regardless of gender, that is going to be vice president to one of the oldest presidents we’ve ever had that has never met a world leader.”
When Stephanopoulos asked her it was fair to raise McCain’s age, McCaskill doubled-down and mentioned his past skin cancer, saying, “I think what we’re talking about is a reality. Other people talk about his melanoma. We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face. This is someone who’s going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. All of us know it. I just think that it’s the facts, George, and that’s something that we need to start focusing on, are the facts, instead of distortions and lies.”
Is age an issue in a presidential candidate? It could be, but McCain is hardly decrepit. His physical disabilities have nothing to do with his age, and his mind is as sharp as ever. In looking at both men, McCain seems to be thriving, while Obama seems to have aged years in the past few months. McCain’s 72 is a lot different than 72 would have been even 24 years ago, when the nation re-elected a 73-year-old Ronald Reagan to a second term.
While it’s not an illegitimate question, it’s not new, either. Voters have known about McCain’s age all through the electoral cycle, and he answered the medical questions in May when he released his medical records — something Obama has yet to do. His prognosis is excellent, and doctors pronounced him in fine shape, which certainly didn’t appear to shock his 96-year-old mother.
This smacks of desperation by Team Obama. They should have learned their lesson when they botched the e-mail ad. It makes them look like they’ve run out of arguments and have to go back to the ones that flopped on their first attempt.

LOL. Seriously, no disrespect. But there has been a herd of buffalo trying to ride shotgun on the forum. A few have stepped in to stop the stampede, but that’s usually a worthless exercise. Has been here.

Good grief new folks. There are arguments on this site all the time. I am going to hate myself for saying this but if you want a fight say the words Intelligent Design or I don’t like Gov. Huckabee. People who have been here for a while just argue. It gets testy sometimes. Man up argue your point. And the reason a lot of folks are being called trolls is that they are trying to be to cute by half in the wording of theirs post to the point no one knows what the hell they are talking about. Sorry for the language.
Cindy Munford on September 14, 2008 at 9:43 PM
Please read what you type before posting. You are never going to be respected here unless you do.
Don’t even know what your point is from that post. That is the action of a troll. If you don’t want to be called and treated like one, then please stop behaving like one. Make your point (clearly, please), and be prepared to have people disagree with you.
Trust me, it will lower your blood pressure.

Perhaps you are referring to the tactics used by Obama supporters against a rado station in Chicago that featured someone critical of the Messiah?
Or the so-called Fairness Doctrine that liberals are salivating to resurrect in order to silence talk radio?
Or the college campus libtards who routinely shout down any speaker they don’t agree with?
Or the Kos and Huffpo fever swamps that routinely generate vicious and vile slanders?
As for the “hyenas” here, spare us your pathetic whining. No one is shouting you down. If anything, you keep getting pestered to explain yourself and you continually refuse to do so.
However, I can understand your reluctance to answer any questions, as the more you open your mouth the more obvious you become.

This another one who sees you for the immature little noxious kindergarten level fig that you are. But then that’s not difficult for any adult of any appreciable level of maturity to do.

That’s because this is a righty blog. It is OUR blog, and if you want to come here with a different opinion, you must accept that you will be in the minority. And you’ll need a thick skin.
One last thing you should know – if your goal is to provoke us or convert any of us, I think you are wasting your time. But it’s your time.
Lastly, if you think we are a herd here, I would like to hear your description of the crowd at HuffPo, Kos or Politico. Or even the majority crowd on ABC or NYT Political pages. That’s where we see the sheep (Bah-rahhhhk, Bah-rahhhhk).

My vote will go to McCain, of the 2 I feel he will do the least amount of damage to my country during his term.
I posted that at an earler time, when there were 4 hopefuls, and in the intervening time I’ve come to rethink that. Listening to the man has been an epiphany for me, although I would never question his love of country, I DID have major issues with his politics. Now, not so much.

Well then they are certainly taking their time about it, aren’t they? In 1796, during the 1796 election cycle, one man attacked another with a cane and was driven back when his victim swung a fireplace poker at his head.
As I said, our politicians used to have a habit of throwing things at their opponents, grabbing them to keep them from talking, punching, kicking and swarming onto people when they became outraged. I would say things have gotten better since then.
When media are shut down at the point of a gun, or people are dragged off the street when they peacefully state their opinions, then you can worry.

I don’t believe this has anything to do with “converting”.
I’ve read this site for years, and as anyone who knows will note, the spectrum of opinion covers the entire field. Even the most liberal on this site get treated with respect when they argue with facts and challenge with sincerity.
What I have witnessed today appears to be a deliberate attempt to drag this site into the gutter where they most likely came from. I believe it is a serious case of envy (maybe even fear), because this site has a reputaion for being taken seriously by the American body politic.
Saltysam on September 14, 2008 at 9:59 PM
I’m curious, irongrampa: did the inclusion of Palin on the ticket influence your decision? For my part, I planned to vote for McCain only so as to not votefor Obama. But now I find myself enthused about his candidacy – if only because it opens the door for one who could be another Reagan.

It is really not at all hard to get a “superiority fix” at this place anymore as anyone who is above the maturity level of a 12 year old would have to get that here these days even if it wasn’t what they originally came here for. It was an electrifying moment. Still, I wonder: is our support for the Grand Old Man quantified largely by the legacy he bequeaths to us in the person of the Arctic Fox?
For me it is and I regard his presidency largely as a grooming of Sarah Palin to succeed him. In that respect, I believe, he is wiser and more patriotic than we ever imagined him to be.

Well don’t forget Cindy McCain is a big proponent of his position on immigration. Mac has an adopted daughter from the orphanage of Mother Theresa herself. So I’m guessing she is in his ear about all the disadvantaged future brewery worker GOP voters south of the border.
I for one was very active right here on HA all along the way making calls and joining in the defeat of that POS they call comprehensive immigration reform. This beast has reared its ugly head again. Johnny Mac is has interpreted the new wellspring of donations and popularity all wrong. I am still against any and all forms of immigration that bypasses out current laws on the books.
sonnyspats1 on September 14, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Your case is resting on a one legged stool. Mr. “Straight Talk” McCain has now made every manner of thing legitimate when he pretended to think that his opponent had called his VP choice a pig when he himself had used that term to describe what he thought was same old same old with just some covering on it. He did the same thing when he insinuated that Obama wanted to practically turn actual kindergarten kids, unlike some of those on this blog who just act that way, into porn star, when he, and you are free to disagree with it, wanted to teach them some things about spotting adult predictors and turn them it. And McCain is the nominee of my party. MY PARTY! A party that I now have many doubts about. But what is the use of talking about those doubts here when the blog juveniles just yell TROLL!!! Frankly my dear, I really don’t see much point. Maybe on another blog with a higher percentage of adults.

Said this before, (probly on this blog) that America seems to have a knack for having the right person for the right time, in any given situation. Even a cursory look through our history will bear that out. The stumbles (Carter) merely point out the value of staying on the correct path. I seriously do not see why this election should prove any different.

Allah toughens us up and helps keep us honest- but with Palin- most of the folks in here lead the way.
The folks in here are pretty astute. They’re good people…damn good people.

And here I am calling you MISS Cindy. Dang. Is Mr. Munford a Vietnam vet?
ManlyRash on September 14, 2008 at 10:37 PM
I agree, IG. I think it is a tribute to what a great nation this is and what a basically decent people Americans are.

But what I don’t understand is, why did Obama feel it necessary to call Palin a pig?
Saltysam on September 14, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Let us hope not, Mrs. Munford, even for Obama’s sake. He’s too young for cancer and should quit smoking.

UGH!

sonnyspats1 on September 14, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Agreed, Santino. All the more reason we must continually pressure Mr. McCain – even after he becmes president – to rethink his position on this matter.
