Everything new is “old” again

posted at 4:30 pm on September 14, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier this week, Barack Obama promised that he would sharpen his attacks on John McCain in response to panicking Democrats watching their gimme election vanishing before their eyes.  Instead of coming up with something new, Team Obama has decided to go with an old attack — by calling McCain old.  Two days ago, they tried it with the blindingly stupid e-mail ad, and today they’ve apparently farmed the theme out to their surrogates:

On This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., a surrogate for the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., raised the age and health of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., when discussing the qualifications, or lack thereof, of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

McCaskill said she stood by her remarks that she’s “uncomfortable with anyone, regardless of gender, that is going to be vice president to one of the oldest presidents we’ve ever had that has never met a world leader.”

When Stephanopoulos asked her it was fair to raise McCain’s age, McCaskill doubled-down and mentioned his past skin cancer, saying, “I think what we’re talking about is a reality. Other people talk about his melanoma.  We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face.  This is someone who’s going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency.  All of us know it.  I just think that it’s the facts, George, and that’s something that we need to start focusing on, are the facts, instead of distortions and lies.”

Is age an issue in a presidential candidate?  It could be, but McCain is hardly decrepit.  His physical disabilities have nothing to do with his age, and his mind is as sharp as ever.  In looking at both men, McCain seems to be thriving, while Obama seems to have aged years in the past few months.  McCain’s 72 is a lot different than 72 would have been even 24 years ago, when the nation re-elected a 73-year-old Ronald Reagan to a second term.

While it’s not an illegitimate question, it’s not new, either.  Voters have known about McCain’s age all through the electoral cycle, and he answered the medical questions in May when he released his medical records — something Obama has yet to do.  His prognosis is excellent, and doctors pronounced him in fine shape, which certainly didn’t appear to shock his 96-year-old mother.

This smacks of desperation by Team Obama.  They should have learned their lesson when they botched the e-mail ad.  It makes them look like they’ve run out of arguments and have to go back to the ones that flopped on their first attempt.

Way to piss-away the senior vote, Oblamo.

Seriously, is his campaign staff comprised of asylum escapees and San Fran socialites, because they really don’t seem to have a clue?

What happened to “distraction from the issues”?

IIRC, her twin sister, Rowena is still alive and thriving as well. I think the two of them toured the world last year.

Realist on September 14, 2008 at 4:36 PM

As far as Palin becoming POTUS suddenly if something (God forbid) were to happen to Mac, the last time I checked she would be required to appoint a Vice President.

Couldn’t she simply do what Oblabla has done and find herself an experienced veteran to act as as mentor and adviser?

Elizabetty on September 14, 2008 at 4:38 PM

In looking at both men, McCain seems to be thriving, while Obama seems to have aged years in the past few months.

Yeah, Obama’s hair went very gray over the course of two weeks.

He’s either under tremendous stress (his smiling, fun personna seems to have been replaced by a scowl much of the time), or he’s picked up some Gravitas In A Bottle at the salon.

Heck, lets just bring out all of Obama’s friends and question what kind of American would associate with these vile humans.

Obama opened the door…now let’s give him a taste of Chicago thuggery politics.

John Doe on September 14, 2008 at 4:39 PM

McCain’s age is not an illegitimate question, but the topic is old as you note.

What Barry could do that would be “new” is get out there and convince some of those ‘typical white people”, people who cling to their guns and Bibles, inow, the people he keeps offending, that there is some reason to vote for him.

It’s really too late for that. He’s done too much damage to those groups, and Sarah is going after them in a convincing manner.

Maybe this is all BO’s got left – personal attacks – the kind of campaign he promised to avoid.

Although I would not characterize them as such, the Palin “missteps” of the Gibson interview (as characterized by the media) will do little to slow the John-mentom, because her very presence has given the Democrats collective skidmarks in their skivvies. And as a result, they are making blunder after blunder in a desperate attention grab to show that they’re the real agent of “change” (what change that is one can hardly guess, but I think it is something like putting us all in gulags for wanting to be free).

The Implosion is not imminent or forthcoming. It’s HERE and we’re witnessing it. And what a beautiful thing it is to behold.

VolMagic on September 14, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Watching the surrogates tow this line with the talking heads today would be hysterical if it weren’t so sadly insulting and devoid of any factual evidence.

Consider:

1. From Newsbusters:

After all, if you are a 72-year-old white male, and the life expectancy for this demographic is 75.7, that doesn’t mean that you are expected to only live another 3.7 years. That’s not the way the statistics work, for the longer you live, the longer you are expected to live.

As such, the Tribune is spot on, for according to the Social Security Administration, a man aged 72 is currently expected to live to 84.

Yet, in McCain’s case, this could be understated, for white male life expectancy is about six years greater than for blacks.

Beyond this, SSA doesn’t account for differing lifestyles, wealth, health care history, diet, exercise, etc. Instead, its life expectancy is a one size fits all for each gender.

With this in mind, the media scare tactic that Palin is likely to become president as a result of McCain’s untimely death is even more factually inaccurate.

2. McCain has 1500 pages of medical records that show him to he healthy as a horse with about as much change of a melanoma recurrence as anyone on earth who is in the sun regularly has of developing the disease.

3. Genetics are on McCain’s side, as evidenced by his 92 year young mother, who is in far better shape than Obama dead mother and house-confined grandmother.

4. Assuming all of this factual and statistical evidence is incorrect and McCain dies at 75, that means that Palin get’s the big chair after having 3+ years of White House on-the-job training in addition to her resume which already dwarfs the pathetic lack of accomplishments and relevant experience of Obama.

And I suppose that these attacks are further examples of Obama’s superior campaign-developed “executive experience” and his above-board discussion of issues that impact the American people, right?

I used to have respect for Obama, even though I disagree with his policies and disliked him. In the past several weeks, he’s convinced me that he’s not fit to breath the same air as the rest of the people on earth.

Damiano on September 14, 2008 at 4:47 PM

And now? Now I hear that McCain is… is… OLD! Is this information out there somewhere and people just aren’t telling me?!

Lehosh on September 14, 2008 at 4:52 PM

Obama is an African American male in a high stress job and he is a smoker. His VP has had health problems for years. And Biden is no spring chicken himself and right behind him is Nancy Pelosi.

Please.

And to be truthful I would feel more comfortable with Palin in the White House than Obama. McCain apparently has faith in her and he is not a careless person.

But going after McCain’s age does not tell people anything they did not already know.

Howard Dean in April:

While knocking McCain’s “old-fashioned” views, Dean maintained that the Democratic Party was unlikely to invoke McCain’s age in the fall campaign.

“I doubt we will bring it up in the election,” said Dean, referring to the age issue. “There is somewhat of a higher ethical bar on what we do.”

“We don’t have any Lee Atwaters or Karl Roves on our side,” he added.

Looks like the Dem’s higher ethical bar just got lowered. Claire McCaskill is no Lee Atwater or Karl Rove, either.

This is interesting, and I wouldn’t be surprised…

hi all
let me share some info with you that i have gotten from excellent sources within the DNC:

On or about October 5th, Biden will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems,
and he will be replaced by Hillary. This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.

there have been talks all weekend about how to proceed with this info. generally, the feeling
is that we should all go ahead and get it out there to as many blog sites and personal email
lists as is possible. i have already seen a few short blurbs about this – the “health problem”
cited in those articles was aneurysm. probably many of you have heard the same rumblings.
however, at this point, with this inside info from the DNC, it looks like this obama strategy will be a go. therefore, it seems that the best strategy is to get out in front of this obama maneuver, spell it out in detail, and thereby expose it for the grand manipulation that it is.

so, let’s start mixing this one up and cut the obamites off at the pass – send this info out to as many people as you can – post about it on websites and blogs – etc etc

if you have any thoughts or questions about this, please be in touch.

lastly, i have put an excerpt from Rudy’s speech at the RNC below – it seems to address this
very issue!!

yours in the fight,
Carolyn

excerpt from R.Giuliani’s speech at the 2008 RNC:
“Obama — Obama promised to take public financing for his campaign, until he broke his promise.

Obama — Obama was against wiretapping before he voted for it.

When speaking to a pro-Israeli group, Obama favored an undivided Jerusalem, like I favor and like John McCain favored. Well, he favored an undivided Jerusalem — don’t get too excited — for one day, until he changed his mind.

Well, I’ll tell you, if I were Joe Biden, I’d want to get that V.P. thing in writing.”

I thought McCain immunized himself against the ‘old’ attack by embracing the meme and even playing it big with Letterman and Leno.

I don’t know what their internals are telling them, my Brother In Law stopped by yesterday and his concern was that Palin was wacko a heartbeat from the big seat — but he voted for Hillary and was never a swing vote.

I think this is a very risky move for team Obama — lots of downside risk to place that little seed of doubt that might not germinate.

It will only work for those who see Palin as wacko right, not as inexperienced as we have seen in the polls this week.

Do you want a ticket with a vice-presidential candidate who might counsel seeking our country’s safety by paying monetary tributes to our enemies?

Obama may have a mental health disorder, since he has VERY limited disclosure of his health history (one page!) and lately does poorly without a teleprompter to read.

Obama now stammers with lots of uh and ah throughout answers that ramble away from the point.

Obama avoids the townhall debates he challenged McCain to, in favor of reading from teleprompters, after challenging McCain to debate anytime and anywhere.

In an ad:
Run recent clips of Obama stammering and being incoherent, with the date and location.

Is Obama suffering from a problem that could put America at risk, or is he just unable to speak coherently without a teleprompter?

Obama won’t show up for a townhall debate and he only released ONE PAGE of his medical records. Be concerned.

Only in Politics

Only in politics can one jump from the bush leagues to the President in the course of one campaign.

In business, does an unknown go from managing an hot-dog cart to head of IBM based on a couple of good Chamber of Commerce speeches?

In the military, does a an Lt. jump up to commanding the army based on a really inspired set of push-ups he had his platoon perform?

There’s a reason the best presidents were old hands, proven and knowledgeable. I really fear for this election, on both sides. On the Dems, the old hand is #2, on the Repubs the old hand is, well, really old. Risky time, risky time.

Which candidate, appears, uh, mentally and, uh, physically exhausted, and, uh, unable to, uh, finish a complete, uh, thought, much less, uh, a sentence, uh, and . . .

Terrie on September 14, 2008 at 5:13 PM

Oh!

Oh!

Oh!

I know!

Is it the same one who’s supposed to be smarter than all the rest of us, but was too stupid to get his own joke about “lipstick”?

Is that the one?

Typhoon on September 14, 2008 at 5:15 PM

anyone noticed Obama’s hair seems to be getting grayer the closer we get to election day? Seems like last year there wasn’t any grey in it

jp on September 14, 2008 at 4:33 PM

I was noticing this the other day. Barry seems to have aged a number of years in the last few weeks.

And McCain looks fantastic! I guess a case of Palinmania is like a fountain of youth!

Poor Barry! Maybe it’s his health the left should be concerned about and not McCain’s???

IrishGirl17 on September 14, 2008 at 5:15 PM

That McCaskill lady is a complete b*tch. I’m sure that MO is totally proud that they elected such a moron and harpy.

Illinidiva on September 14, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Isn’t it more likely that Biden would go before McCain, actually? His brain problems seem more scary and unpreventable than McCain’s melanoma problems.

Seixon on September 14, 2008 at 5:18 PM

I heard a couple of days ago that Biden’s son was giving up his job at that big fat lobbying firm because it was making Dad look bad. Would he do that if Dad was getting the boot?

Terrye on September 14, 2008 at 5:18 PM

72 is the new 50, baby.

bloghooligan on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

You know what I am worried about? Biden’s age. Who’s going to run the country if he dies while Obama is president?

Dusty on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

So, whaddaya all think?

Let’s just say in the next week or two Barry (heaven forfend) lights up one too many Camels and has a massive coronary.

Biden takes his spot on the ticket and picks Hillary as his VP.

So, McCain/Palin vs. Biden/Clinton.

Who wins?

Typhoon on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

I Want to paraphrase and correct Ronald Reagan:

I will make my opponent’s youth and inexperience in this campaign

I’m John McCain and I approved this message.

NoFanofLibs on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Speaking of “old age”! I see all kind of demographics reflected in the various polls, but(personally)I have yet to see one reflecting the over 65 vote. Has anyone? If so, what is it saying?

jeanie on September 14, 2008 at 5:20 PM

If Obama claws his way back and wins on the strength of email, age and other bullsh*t, WITHOUT a response from McCain during the end of the campaign on Ayers, Riezco, etc., then I will be upset.

For now, let the DNC punch themselves out and drive whats left of thier candidates credibility into the cellar.

Waterboy on September 14, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Silly woman. He took a field trip to Pock-ee-ston once.

That’s all you need to know.

Typhoon on September 14, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Was this before or after his trip to Massatoosetts?

MrScribbler on September 14, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Isn’t it more likely that Biden would go before McCain

Yes, if one or more of his plugs isn’t stopped from drilling deep. I wonder about the source DNA.

trailboss on September 14, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Typhoon on September 14, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Uh, the Russians?

trailboss on September 14, 2008 at 5:22 PM

He was killed in a car accident.

Elizabetty on September 14, 2008 at 5:09 PM

Thanks. Is that hereditary?

TooTall on September 14, 2008 at 5:23 PM

I saw Claire McCaskill opposite Carly Fiorina with on the Stephanopolous show.

Carly did a solid job of staying in command with her support for Palin, while Claire appeared one hormone shy of hysterical.

Claire’s out front on the Democrat talking points today with the “earmarks” and the “bridge to nowhere” smear. I hope they keep it up, because the voters will get exposed to the entire story, and it will reinforce her image as a reformer.

Meanwhile, Claire, you should watch this video. It may help you understand something, of which the American public is well aware. If you guys continue to hide behind the skirts of the MSM, you’re doomed this election season.
