Battleground … Minnesota?

Count the Land of 10,000 Lakes as a new battleground state. According to the Star Tribune Minnesota Poll, John McCain has caught Barack Obama and has put the state in a dead heat among likely voters. McCain has reversed a 13-point deficit from May and has forced Obama to start spending in what looked to be a solidly blue state:
Minnesota has become a battleground in a presidential campaign that has dramatically tightened nationwide.
A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll shows that the race is now a dead heat between Barack Obama and John McCain, each supported by 45 percent of likely voters in the state. …
The poll found that McCain has made gains across the board since a May Minnesota Poll that showed him trailing by 13 points. He has picked up considerable support among men and to a lesser degree among women. He also has boosted his standing with whites, young voters and all levels of household income and education.
The selection of Sarah Palin hasn’t directly affected the numbers in Minnesota, at least not yet; the Strib’s internals look like a wash. However, it may have had an indirect effect similar to that seen nationally in the latest AP poll. While 45% of voters think Palin lacks enough experience for the job, 44% now think the same thing of Obama. Palin and Biden have contradictory numbers. Many more see him as experienced enough for the job, but Minnesotans like her better than him by nine points.
One of the more striking numbers from the poll is the younger voter demographic. Obama has had a large lead in most polling in voters under 35, and in Minnesota, the college-age and young adult vote is a formidable weapon. Now, though, McCain and Obama evenly split that vote, which bodes ill for Obama in a general election.
If Minnesota becomes a battleground, it’s yet another place Obama now has to shift to defense. It signals that the empty populism of the primaries has worn too thin in the general election, and even a state that voted for John Kerry by four points over George Bush has doubts about Kerry’s successor. It’s another in a series of bad signs for Team Obama.

Nice analysis, as usual, Ed.
When one sides veep appears to have an equal or slightly better edge than their candidate on the experience question, it sure doesn’t bode well for The Zero in November.

What a lovely way to start the day! Between this and the WaPo piece about “Yet the possibility is very real: Barack Obama could lose.
If that happens, then what? How will I feel? How will other black Americans feel? How should people like me feel?”
Not too long ago such apostate thought was… well… unthinkable in certain circles. Amazing what a difference a couple of weeks makes.
Drunken Angry Clown on September 14, 2008 at 7:24 AM
Yeah. Folks will go to the poll all over the country on November 4, and be evenly divided between voting for Obama and Palin. Uh, wait a minute. Oh, I see, Obama is running against McCain! Well then, it is no contest…

Well, if by certain circles you mean deep inside the bunker of the DNC, then yes. However, to the mainstream and Republican voters, Obama was a paper tiger since he failed to win against Hillary in convincing fashion.
The American voter is now getting serious and paying attention.

If Obama has to struggle to keep a lot of blue states, he won’t have that time to campaign in real battlegrounds. Awesome!

I’m thinking the internal polling in the Obama camp must be devastating.
I predicted a McCain landslide to a liberal friend months ago only to be scoffed at. I see libs with exploded heads and in fetal position on 11/5.
muggedbyreality on September 14, 2008 at 7:41 AM
Well yes. However, acknowledging you are ahead in the polls is not getting cocky. In fact, it serves to force the RNC to change their strategy (i.e. a strategy when you are trailing or closing has to be different that one in which you are leading or have momentum).
We would be silly to forego much needed jubilation after months and months of Obama leading in the polls aided by a biased media.
Yes, let us not get cocky, but at the same time we cannot lose the killer instinct.

First: Thanks for working on Sunday Ed.
Second: Expect that the personal attacks on Sarah Palin will get even worse as this race tightens up.
Team Obama has no idea what to do now. They can’t come right out and say what “change” they want for America because if they did, the election would be over.
All they have left is character assassination and that hasn’t been working for them. But they will ride that horse into the ground before election day.
Talon on September 14, 2008 at 7:47 AM
Don’t they let the dead vote in Chicago? Maybe that’s why Obama is pro-Abortion. The dead don’t vote Republican…
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on September 14, 2008 at 7:50 AM
Is the improvement attributable to Minnesota hosting the Republican convention? If so, the poll results may not suggest other ‘blue’ state momentum. Has the McCain campaign been advertising in Minnesota?
Peri Winkle on September 14, 2008 at 7:50 AM
Wonderful – simply wonderful.
And it should get even better. My liberal friends in Minnesota still don’t get it and are attacking Palin on every ridiculous front. It’s going to snap back on them and catch them right in the lower extremities.

Meanwhile the WaPo story this AM by Karl Vick says the protest in Anchorage yesterday was in the high hundreds, “even surging to a thousand” when another WaPo story by a babe from the rag yesterday said several hundred. Vick must be a supporter of the surge./s So what is it? Ed can you substantiate this? Looks like the MSM is again flailing trying to manipulate public perception and distorting reality to do so.

McCain “stole” Barry’s word – sob, sob – and he can’t figure out how to get it back:
“In t h e f a c e o f P a l i n ’ s onslaught, Obama has continued to base his campaign on the outdated claim that John McCain and his running mate represent four more years of a failed Bush administration.
A senior Obama adviser said candidly that claim did not work. “I don’t think it’s sticking. The McCain campaign has stolen our message of ‘change’ – the very thing we’ve been campaigning on for 20 months. Well, who’s the change? It’s McCain.” Palin’s astounding rise has left the Obama camp floundering for a new narrative that will capture the imagination of voters in the run-up to the November 4 election. “There is overreaction and panic,” the official admitted. “The hard part for Barack is she’s stolen his thunder a bit. It has knocked us off our game.”

The concern is two-fold:
1. Will this “confidence” lead people to let down in contributing resources–time, effort, money, prayer, attention (TEMPA, I call it–feel free to use, but don’t take credit)? Will people who would have volunteered otherwise use the good news as an excuse not to do so? From personal experience, I can tell you that conservative/Republican volunteerism on campaigns sadly lags behind that of our socialist/Democrat opponents.
2. What happens WHEN the bad news comes? Will the shock of it destroy the drive? When expectations and active perceptions of the situation are low or sober, failing them is less destructive (and painful) than when they are high. There will be bad news before this is out. When expectations or whatever are high, the chance increases of disillusionment.
Thank you for reading. And McCain-Palin ‘08

I wonder if the men in Minnesota have woke up to the fact that Obama wants to reinstate the proved useless assault weapons ban? You notice when Democrats talk new gun control laws, they lose the crime angle? I wonder why?
Could it be that Democrats have been exposed, gun control to Democrats is now all about controlling guns, not actually doing anything, except of course taking people’s Constitutional rights away. And here all along, I thought Democrats were all about protecting your library card — that was a laugher.
Odd how things are shaping up in liberal land these days. Gov Palin seems to be stomping on one liberal styrofoam temple after another, not just ‘Barrack Apollo Obama’s’.
Gov Palin’s answer on the Gibson gun ban question was superb. Men in Minnesota, grow a pair.

As I have been reading and watching many different sources of information this POTUS election, I have noticed far and away the term “white voters” used like never before, and the momentum of the use of that term seems to be building momentum.
Is the Obama campaign and/or the Democrats hedging their bets and preparing a “racist motivated is the only reason we lost and you will be wracked with white guilt which we will impinge upon you for not voting Obama” outcome of the election in the event McCain prevails, or what?
I’ve never seen anything like it in any previous POTUS election, and I’ve voted in the last *ahem* eight *cough*.

If McCain is even in a poll done by the Star Tribune, he’s leading. The Star Tribune polls are notoriously skewed toward Democrats. The last poll before the 1998 governor’s race up here had Skip Humphrey leading. He finished third.
Mr. D on September 14, 2008 at 9:11 AM
Once the Sarah-Palin novelty has worn off a bit, the election is going to come down to the TV ‘debates’. You can bet Obambi’s handlers are teaching him how to overwhelm John McCain with flowery rhetoric and a blizzard of ‘facts’, without stumbling. And you can bet that the MSM ‘moderators’ will throw him softballs.
But still, Sen. McCain has decades of experience with back-and-forth on the Senate floor, and he’s very adept at getting to the point, so I wouldn’t count him out. He won’t break a sweat, and Obambi might.

Back a few months ago, a good friend told me that he fears our country has changed from a Conservative minded people, to a Liberal minded people. He used many examples to justify his fears, the most notable of which being the 2006 election results. I simply reminded my friend that the 2006 election results were likely a result of Republicans having lost their way, while behaving (in every way) like Liberals. Pork spending, social programs, corruption, increasing the size and scope of government…. When this occurs, the base either stays home, or votes Democrat for a variety of reasons, none of which that actually indicates the country having moved towards Liberalism.
Obama will carry California and New York, but in the case of California, the race will be much closer than usual. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, Florida, Washington, Oregon, and even New Jersey could go to McCain this election. Obama is that bad of a candidate!

Looking at the RealClearPolitics State-by-State Polls a clear pattern is emerging. In practically every state poll Obamas lead is vanishing, or in states he’s losing the deficit is growing. Obama is just one
policy announcementgaffe away from irrelevance. I think Hurricane Ike could be it, because the refineries went cold days before the storm struck….they knew power would be lost so they shut down. It takes many days to repair damage, if any, and many days to “Go Hot” again. This means a spike in gasoline prices. If Obama says “Release the Strategic Reserve” again, without supporting increased refining capability, he’s toast. Republicans are effectively now running against Congress, and this just feeds Reps all the ammo-bandoliers they need to keep firing until November 4th.Nostradamus on September 14, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Here in Montana, Obama has spent big and has visited several cities this year. Obama really wanted Montana to prove the point that Obama is the one, and winning in a state that almost never votes Democrat for potus, proves the point that Obama is the messiah.
Obama now trails McCain in Montana by 11 points, and has decided to suspend spending here. This news is breaking the hearts of the young college age “uninformed” voters in Bozeman and Missoula, as these brainwashed kids were all running around with that “chill running up their leg” thing going on. Actually, most of these kids are somehow of the belief that Obama was going to legalize pot in Montana. I must assume that rumor started on college campuses, and spread like wildfire. I told my college age son “this is why the voting age should be 21 rather than 18.”
Obama will now focus in on the electoral college, as should be. I remain confident in the American people and our commitment to country, law, & traditions. When in the privacy of the voting booth…
