FRC Action Summit: Sean Hannity

The conference needed a little energy by the time Sean Hannity took the stage, thanks to a serious and emotional presentation by Lila Rose about Planned Parenthood, and Hannity provided it in buckets. He brought his sarcasm and humor in an opening attack on Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, James Carville, Paul Begala, and liberals in general that fired up the crowd. He belittled Obama’s pretenses of secular messianism and called him Barack “Apollo” Obama, a reference to the Greek facade of his acceptance speech.
Getting more serious, Hannity said that 2008 would be known as “the year journalism died”. He moved away from that theme immediately, but instead ran down a list of Obama’s deficiencies, including a lack of any significant accomplishments, his “57 states” gaffe, tire inflation and tune-ups instead of drilling, and his inability to distinguish between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Hannity especially hammered home the point that 130 “present” votes in the state Senate does not show a man willing to accept responsibility even as a legislator, let alone as an executive.
Hannity made an offer to Barack Obama. Given Obama’s predilection for scolding America for not being charitable, Hannity offered to send Obama’s destitute half-brother in Kenya $1,000, if Team Obama can send Hannity his address. If Obama will appear on his show, he’ll make it $10,000.
Afterwards, he returned to the media issue. Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton’s strategist, told him that the media has lost a tremendous amount of credibility in this electoral cycle. Rasmussen reports that 69% of the public believe that the media outlets have rigged their reporting to favor their candidate. In no manner is that more obvious in the way they have treated Sarah Palin. In six days, Hannity says, there were more questions about Bristol Palin than in 19 months about Obama’s association with William Ayers.
Hannity notes that he has been publicly attacked by Obama (5 times), Jeremiah Wright (4 times), Michael Pfleger and William Ayers (2 times each) for asking these questions. “Someone has to ask the questions,” Hannity said, “because Charlie Gibson won’t.” He went on a tear about why the media hasn’t done more investigative work into Trinity United Church and its reliance on black liberation theology, and Obama’s 20-year association with it.
He used the Tony Rezko scandal here as well. While the media peruses Sarah Palin’s completely legal per-diem payments, most of them have ignored Obama’s connections to Rezko and the financial arrangements that allowed the Obamas to purchase their house. Rezko raised $250,000 dollars for Obama’s political campaigns, but the media has mostly remained uninterested in their relationship since his indictment and even his conviction for political corruption.
How many times did the three broadcast network anchors accompany John McCain on his dozen trips to Iraq and Afghanistan? One less than they did on Obama’s second trip to Iraq. Why? He ripped into Gibson for his condescension and his attempt at “gotcha” questions, especially on praying for the soldiers going to Iraq. Hannity noted similar language from Jefferson and Washington, and said that Gibson would have found them unprepared for the Presidency as well.
Hannity went on in a similar vein regarding feminists and Obama campaign oppo researchers. The entire speech was by far the biggest stemwinder of the conference, and it fired up the crowd. He derided the snobbery of the media, feminists, and liberals over Palin’s nomination. He focused most tightly on the media, a target that most here appreciated. If he went over the top at times, which he arguably did, he certainly made his point and got the conference energized to action.

Thank you Ed for the great work you are doing.

He debated our mayor who, every time Pres Bush came to town, gathered all the Bush haters and held up their middle finger.
Our squirrel mayor thought, since he was a lawyer, he was going to kill Hannity. He didn’t! He was shown for the mean spirited little man he is. Hannity was humorous, intelligent and professional, and ended at the exact time he was supposed to. The little squirrel went on and on and finally his people were told he was going to be cut off if they didn’t stop him.
Sean has eternally earned by respect and admiration.
God bless him. I’m looking forward to his interview of Sarah.

Is there a link to that speech? I’d love to see it!

Why doesn’t this site say the same about Coulter usually? Who goes over the top and energizes people? I’m not trying to pick a fight, I’m actually genuinely curious on this score – I’ve not been able to reconcile the reasoning.

Obama’s lack of concern for his own half brother speaks volumes about his character. It also speaks volumes about the character of Obama Sr. from which Barack inherited his “dreams”. Obama Sr. abandoned them both to wallow in the misery of his failed career, driving drunk until he killed himself, not even stopping when an earlier “accident” resulted in the amputation of his legs.
Because of the love of his American mother and grandparents Obama got to live the American dream. Yet, he clings to the Kenyan dreams of his worthless father, doing nothing to lift up the half brother who was not so blessed.
Disturb the Universe on September 13, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Hannity is awesome on his radio show. He basically says everything that’s been on HotAir and mixes in some country music and Reagan soundbites.
“Barack Apollo Obama” cracks me up everytime

Juxtapose Obama ignoring the plight of his half brother living in destitution in Kenya with the charitable heart of McCain who welcomed into his family a baby from Mother Theresa’s orphanage.
Disturb the Universe on September 13, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Ya think? Just because in 2000 they called Florida for Gore before the polls closed? Or in 2004 they said things like “Looks like Kerry will take State X” while the crawler at the bottom of the screen would say something like “Kerry ahead by 3 votes; one percent of the precincts in.” Or conversely, when the crawler would show Bush ahead by 10% and 98% of the precints in, they would say, “State Y is just too close to call right now.”
And yet, many of the nutroots believe that the media is in the tank for Obama. Go figure.

Journalism will die the day Sean Hannity is considered a journalist. He excels at entertainment against a political backdrop, but isn’t the best source for insight into journalism or politics.
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Hannity is a commentator, not a journalist. He has never claimed otherwise.

I don’t think Hannity considers himself to be a journalist. or did I misunderstand your comment?

I could be wrong but I think it is more a comparison to the other speakers. I don’t think Ann would be invited to this forum but I could be wrong. Every party has their flame throwers and there is always a certain amount of the cringe factor but as long as they aren’t lying, then have at it.

From what I could understand from an earlier post by Ed, the video of this forum will be sold by the FRC.

If Ed’s posts are any indication, and obviously they are :), must have been a very enjoyable summit. I like Bennett especially.
Spirit of 1776 on September 13, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Tennman it was a debate (of a sort). They each had 30 minutes and it was televised locally. The people timing it kept telling rocky the squirrel’s people that he had 2 minutes, 1 minute etc., but they never communicated to rocky. I wonder if they were afraid to interrupt him. Hannity’s people were told and he was advised every time and ended at the exact time.
The huge audience was 90% for Sean. rocky, the squirrel, could not understand that, it was his city after all.
I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t know if there is a recording. I was so afraid to watch because I wanted Sean to do well. Silly me, he was great!
Bambi on September 13, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Talk show hosts are like preachers (in the broadest sense to the term) some you like and other’s don’t do it for you. Even if you agree with 95% of what they say. I always figure that’s a me thing, not a host thing.

Oh, me to! I like listening people that I can learn from, not stuff that makes me nod my head like a babble doll. The funny thing is he will quote someone and it is so beautiful that I will try to read that person’s works. And I immediately feel inadequate. That’s okay, I’m still going to work on it.
Cindy Munford on September 13, 2008 at 11:48 AM
That’s okay. I don’t usually know what I’m talking about anyway. (g)

Hannity is an asset to the cause, but listening to his show – I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
They would do well to put Michael Savage behind that podium.

I found on their site where there was live streaming for free. Of course that doesn’t help to see it past tense. I just might order the DVD though to see it — and — donate money to a good cause.
Tennman on September 13, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Likely he doesn’t, but he is a broadcaster who crosses into the realm of journalist and newsmaker through his interviews with politicians. I think he’s a talented guy who is a little bit too much of a cheerleader and demonizer.

Hannity has honed and polished his presentation down pat.
Just as ISSUES are the foundation, comparisons make the momentum. It’s worth noting what makes McCain and Palin better than those to whom each is compared by the doubting nay-sayers. FUEL for thought; drill now, produce energy!
The responsibility to share knowledge falls to those who read documentation to distribute unto those who only view TV.
Ed, It is a blessing to have conservative talk radio and websites. Share the wealth. Disseminate FACTS. Though the opponent sows tares, reap what YOU sow and leave the opponent his own harvest to rue. But sow we must, each of us our part. Thanks for your outstanding work, Captain.

So I guess all of Hollywood needs to hush also? As long as he is admittedly partisan I have no problem with him being a cheerleader.
Cindy Munford on September 13, 2008 at 11:55 AM
We need cheerleaders and demonizers to balance those on the left like Chris Matthews. If he had Shep Smith’s job or Chris Wallace’s job, I would see your point.
Disturb the Universe on September 13, 2008 at 11:56 AM
I agree. Maybe since I’m from the NY area and he’s been on 3 hours a day for a long time I’m a little burned out on his style–either that or his Long Island accent.
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 12:00 PM
As opposed to Mathews and the Olbymonster who do consider themselves journalists.
Les in NC on September 13, 2008 at 12:01 PM
No they all should keep talking. I’m just not going to heed proclamations about the death of journalism from Sean Penn.
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Sean talked about this on his radio show yesterday. No way will Barry do it. Sean would bust one off in his butt and Barry would be so exposed for failing to answer on issues that he changes his mind on, esp. the surge. Hannity would be very tough on him. If you thought the O’Reilly interview was rough…
RMCS_USN on September 13, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Is it just me or does Sean always have a writing instrument in his hand?
Ian on September 13, 2008 at 12:06 PM
I still see Keith as more of a sports guy, but that’s what he did back when I watched more TV. Matthews always struck me as a political analyst who exemplified the Peter Principle when he was promoted into an anchor-type position.
With Olbermann or Hannity often what you are is getting more marketing of a point of view than analysis of an issue.
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Yes, let them talk. The more the left spews their hatred of America the more the general public wakes up and becomes repulsed.
The more people like Hannity expose the skeletons in Obama’s closet the more the general public questions whether he is indeed the man for the job.
Disturb the Universe on September 13, 2008 at 12:10 PM
That, I don’t know. They haven’t gotten back with me yet to verify my email address so that I can listen live. There’s a big blue button on it that says Buy DVD or Buy DVDs — I can’t recall which one. So maybe it’s more than one.
Tennman on September 13, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Maybe, but Hannity is a polarizer. He seems to piss off about as many people as he persuades. Net net, perhaps it’s positive but it might vary each election cycle.
I think Rush is smoother and less polarizing, but even Rush sometimes, when discussing an issue, becomes the issue himself–the Michael J. Fox incident comes to mind.
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 12:17 PM
Hannity will be accused of making fun of the Apollo theater.

I don’t want the death of journalism either but I think they have lost sight of their mission. It’s their job to inform of events that actually happened or are planned not to interpret. I think it is safe to say that isn’t even on their radar screen anymore. Sean Penn/Sean Hannity? I don’t know, that may be a bit harsh.

Sorry I missed it, but by your accounting of it, it sounds like a lengthy clip from his daily radio show. I listen once a week now instead of every day because his 3 hrs on air is virtually identical… I support what he says, and usually agree with it, but Hannity needs new material. I agree that he’s saying things no one else will, but at this point he’s preaching to the choir. Rush’s topics are far more varied and interesting, so he gets most of my listening time.
Gartrip on September 13, 2008 at 12:45 PM
I have to throw the B.S flag here. Hannity is not claiming to be a journalist or supposed to be reporting the news, in fact he is the first to say he’s not a reporter. Olby and thrill down my leg Mathews are supposedly reporters.
Les in NC on September 13, 2008 at 12:49 PM
You hadn’t eBay’d them? Is your view that:
A.) There is no such thing as polarizing speech?
B.) Hannity is not himself polarizing?
C.) All political speech is inherently polarizing?
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 1:03 PM
Shouldn’t he just pull himself up by his own bootstraps or something? Maybe start a business, invest in some hedge funds.
crr6 on September 13, 2008 at 1:06 PM
You point to a worthwhile distinction. Reporter is a subset in the field of journalism. None of the 3 are reporters. Matthews might be the closest, but since he never stops talking in front of a camera I doubt he’s been out in the field to report on a story in a decade.
Are any of the 3 journalists? Are editorial writers journalists? What constitutes the line?
dedalus on September 13, 2008 at 1:08 PM
You make a good observation. Editorial writers are expressing their opinions. Journalists should leave opinion out and report the facts instead of steering their viewers/readers in one direction or the other.

I applaud Hannity for ripping the hide off Obama for Jeremiah Wright. Otherwise, too often, he’s an insincere, self-righteous tool.
Most recently, I fault him for two things.
Just as some knowledgeable writers had finally backed Obama’s a** into a corner on his misrepresentations about his position on partial-birth abortion, Hannity in two successive shows allowed Colmes and liberal guests to slither out of that corner. Hannity was woefully underprepared to deliver the irrefutable and conclusive blow to their absurd arguments.
Second, Hannity should have kicked Colmes in the groin, or at least singled Colmes out for excoriating criticism, on national television for the despicable things that Colmes wrote about Palin on his personal blog. For not doing so, I think Hannity is a gutless weasle.

Seems to me that Sean’s the pit bull without any lipstick. All intensity all of the time. A man with no grasp of nuance. For a conference that was advertised as welcoming both McCain and Obama to speak, Sean’s hard line had to seem . . . awkward?

Your facetious comment reminds me of something I read this morning about the Obamas’ (and the Bidens’) history of charitable giving, and their investments (before Barry was running for President and knew he’d have to release his tax returns).
In 2004, the Obamas reported $207,647 in adjusted gross income, of which they contributed $2500 to charity (a little more than 1% of their AGI). In 2004, the Bidens reported $234,271 in adjusted gross income, on which they reported charitable contributions of a whopping $380. I guess Barry’s little bro better hope Sean Hannity sends him the check, because it doesn’t look like Barry or Joe are big believers in sharing the wealth (at least, not when it’s their own wealth).
It also doesn’t look like Barry or Joe know much about saving and/or investing money. Obama’s 2004 tax returns report no interest or dividend income whatsoever. Biden’s 2004 tax returns reported the grand sum of $129 in interest income, and zero dividend income. Both the Obamas and the Bidens were earning over $200,000 per year for several years prior to 2004. (The Obamas had adjusted gross income of over $240,000 and the Bidens had adjusted gross income of over $220,000 for each year in 2001, 2002 and 2003). Barry and Joe want to run our economy — apparently they just don’t want to invest in it themselves.

Hannity makes no bones about who side he is on. I used to listen to him but it was the same thing, over and over and over. Everybody is a “great American” ad nauseum!
That said, I don’t mind him being a cheerleader, I just wish he would change it up a bit more.
Chris Matthews was really down the middle in 1999 and 2000. He would call his liberal guests on his show on their BS and make them flesh out their views. I even bought his 1st book because I was so impressed with him. I don’t know what the heck happened but he sold out big time. Yeah, I know he worked for Tip O’Niel and for Carter but he really converted to the dark side. He’s just a weasely, butthead now!

I agree for the most part. I don’t care to listen to either of them to be honest. If both would leave the ad hominem attacks aside, state their positions and actually argue, they, and “conservatives”, would be better off. Calling people “stupid” doesn’t do anything to advance one’s own argument. They’d be wise to learn this point.
Send_Me on September 13, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Geez! O’Reilly really loves himself and really, really wants others to like him as well. He is a very insecure guy but not a stupid man either! He wants to be like Rush but is unable to laugh at himself.

Powerlineblog linked an excellent commentary by Stephen F. Hayward that likens Sarah Palin to Truman and Reagan in that all three represent what our founding fathers had in mind when our new form of a representaive republic was formed. This great experiment in government by the people looked not to aristocracy but to its citizens for self-governance.
Charles Gibson and his ilk in the media and the Beltway need to be reminded of what makes America unique. It is not the self-annointed elite but the savvy people themselves who have a clear vision of their principles, who align them with principles of our Constitution, and who demonstrate executive skill.
onlineanalyst on September 13, 2008 at 5:40 PM
For those of us who read and post at blogs and who chase links to get a fuller picture, we are probably ahead of the curve in news and political awareness than the average person. Thus, Sean Hannity seems to be repetitive to us.
Hannity, however, reaches a broad spectrum of viewers/listeners who don’t use Internet sources as much. He certainly meets the needs of audiences that would otherwise be inundated with the MSMs message and never hear a conservative point of view.
Without his repetition re Wright and its invective-filled message, many Americans would not be aware of the complete Obama biography. In fact, I believe that eventually ABC could no longer ignore the rants of Wright because broadcasters like Hannity brought the issue to the public’s attention.
I’d like Hannity to build on what is coming to light about Obama’s connections with Ayers regarding the huge amounts of money for educational purposes via the Annenberg Foundation. The generous grant eventually underwrote Marxist education-ideals programs, filtered to dubious projects, showed no educational gains, and went down the tubes into the black hole of memory. Efforts to research the issue have been stymied. It needs to be scrutinized.
Obama’s relation the Franklin Marshall Davis, CPUSA mentor to the young Obama must be presented to the public, as should the influence of Saul Alinsky’s teachings to a major presidential candidate.
When people say Hannity is hateful, I wonder what program they have ever heard. He is affable to all of his callers and guests. He presents a conservative viewpoint and offers his reasons why. If callers disagree with his point of view and offer reasons for that disagreement, he listens courteously and probes them to support their ideas. More often than not, his detractors offer no substantiation, only obvious talking points. If he doesn’t let his show(s) become platforms for bots, that is hardly hateful or polarizing behavior.

Barack Obama reportedly met his half-brother once in his life. Cindy McCain completely ignores her half-sister whom she has had contact with many times in her life. Her dad turned his back on them and they live here in the US.
My point is LEAVE THE FRIGGIN FAMILIES OUT OF THIS CRAP. All families look weird from the outside…even yours.
