Why can’t McCain e-mail? Boston Globe explained it in 2000; Update: So did Forbes

Earlier today, Barack Obama’s campaign released an ad attacking John McCain for not knowing how to send an e-mail. Their crack research team apparently never heard of Google or Lexis-Nexis, but Jonah Goldberg does. He discovers why McCain doesn’t use a keyboard — his torturers made sure he couldn’t. The Boston Globe reported it eight years ago:
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.
After Vietnam, McCain had Ann Lawrence, a physical therapist, help him regain flexibility in his leg, which had been frozen in an extended position by a shattered knee. It was the only way he could hope to resume his career as a Navy flier, but Lawrence said the treatment, taken twice a week for six months, was excruciatingly painful.
”He endured it, he wouldn’t settle for less,” said Lawrence, who rejoiced with McCain when he passed the Navy physical. ”I have never seen such toughness and resolve.”
Making fun of a war hero’s severe injuries — smooth move, Team O. Talk about computer illiteracy! Doesn’t anyone on the Obama campaign know what they’re doing? Didn’t it ever occur to them that a man who can’t raise his arms above his head might have a physical barrier to using a computer?
If this is what happens when they takes the gloves off, maybe they should just keep them on in the future.
Update (AP): I’m not sure how he’s accessing the ‘Net given his injuries, but he does appear to have some kind of access. From an NYT interview in July:
Q: What websites if any do you look at regularly?
Mr. McCain: Brooke and Mark show me Drudge, obviously, everybody watches, for better or for worse, Drudge. Sometimes I look at Politico. Sometimes RealPolitics, sometimes.
(Mrs. McCain and Ms. Buchanan both interject: “Meagan’s blog!”)
Mr. McCain: Excuse me, Meagan’s blog. And we also look at the blogs from Michael and from you that may not be in the newspaper, that are just part of your blog.
Q: But do you go on line for yourself?
Mr. McCain: They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need – including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.
Maybe he’s able to move the mouse so he can access sites bookmarked for him?
Update (Ed): Jonah Goldberg makes an excellent point in an update:
Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don’t think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can’t grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can’t understand first order national security issues because he’s never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting “send” on AOL or fighting a war?
In fact, didn’t Obama just make all of those arguments valid and fair?
Update II: Ace notes that Forbes Magazine noted McCain’s disability in 2000, too:
In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate’s savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. “She’s a whiz on the keyboard, and I’m so laborious,” McCain admits.
How difficult was this for a campaign to find before they ran an ad embarrassing themselves?

This proves McCain is out of touch.
If he doesn’t use email, he probably has no idea that a lawyer from a small African country has a client with a large sum of money needing to be transferred into the US and needs someone to “facilitate” the transfer….

Excellent points to ponder, Bubba. Thanks!
Mr. Obama (presumably) has mastered a skill that a 6-year-old can do. He can type (even with one finger), and hit send.
(I used to run a computer lab for 6-10 year-olds. Informed opinion here.)
On the other hand, Mr. McCain — before the Viets got ahold of him — was mentally and physically capable of one of the most demanding eye-hand and mental acuity challenges going: landing a jet aircraft on a moving runway. Lot of balls in the air, lots of physical stresses, lots of bad juju all over your face all at once if the slightest thing goes wrong.
The military requires a lot of headspace adjustment and proving your cutting of mustard before you’re allowed to drive a jet off of a carrier…daddy’s an admiral or no.
…but, the Left is all a’titter because Mr. McC never took up “Pong”. Maybe he was busy…chasing women or serving his country or something….
…love that name, by the way…”Bubba Redneck”…perfect….

One last thing for tonight. Obama absolutely knows McCains physical impairments. He’s been in the Senate with him, worked with him and must have shook hands with him even before they were seen together on the stage at Saddle Back.
Obama took a calculated shot and he’s going to get called on it. Then the old media will hate internet news even more.

I read on a lefty blog that there was an email going around with side by side pix of Palin & Obama each on a motorcycle. Supposedly Obama’s ride is all plastic and doofy looking and Sarah’s is a fine looking machine. The caption reads something like “That’s all I needed to know.” The blogger said it would be devastating to Obama if it got around. I searched for it but came up empty. Could be a false flag. Anyone seen/heard of it?

I haven’t heard of that one. But the boss has a video on her main page of McCain and Obama placing a rose at the 9/11 site. Well, McCain places the rose, and Obama tosses it.

McCain: can handle himself under pressure and can think on his feet.
Obama: who knows????
These are leadership qualities we need in a President and CNC, not their computer skills. Remember the last time we had a young rising star in the White House after defeating a more seasoned, older opponent?
There was an advertisement long ago where a kid is at a job interview and the guy interviewing him reads his resume, looks up, and says, “So you killed 10,500 aliens playing Space Invaders, how does that help me?”. Kid reminds me of Obama……

I am just suggesting that the Obama team should trust the info written in the Boston Globe. Otherwise, what are they going to do? Demand an independent examination by their own physician?
I very much agree with your analysis of this situation. I just think it would be best if Obama takes responsibility for this himself and does not try to hide or obfuscate.
Or, at least it always makes me feels better when I take responsibility for any negative consequences of any mistake I make, even if unintentional.
Loxodonta on September 13, 2008 at 12:12 AM
Really? Then someone is forging the “Obama 2008″ tag at the bottom of the ad and some criminal is imitating Obama when the voice at the end of the ad says “I am Barak Obama, and I approved this Message”.

Politico Story
The politico story is based on a lengthy New York Times interview.

I am pretty sure he will have to take the responsibility since he sited the running of his campaign as executive experience. Although much worse, it is not unlike the flag mess from last weekend. Obviously not a personal decision by Sen. Obama himself but just so careless. When you are trying to get the majority of the nation to elect you president it seems like you would try a little harder not to insult so many of them. This newest mistake just hits so many different demographics that I don’t know what to think anymore.
And amen on owning up to my own goof ups, it’s easier to just get it out there instead of rationalizing.

Wrong.
Checkers versus three dimensional chess.

Surely the messiah can heal just one age-worn vet who has given so much for his country; who identifies so strongly with guiding principles of his nation; who is superior to the messiah himself in almost every conceivable way. Surely the One can do this small thing. The German hordes await your miracle! The French sheep, the British mutton they await your glorious healing power. Anything less would be, well, epic failure. ;p

Actually, I’m right here, and I eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I love how Hot Air, and the lovely commentators who noted I should shove my mouse up my a$$, have contrived this whole deal to mean that because of McCain’s physical impairments he ipso factum doens’t know who to send an email, and therin Obama is making fun of his physical disbalities due to torture by the Vietnamese.
Tell me (which I’m sure you will), there are people in this world who can write successfull blogs, find hundreds of real human beings, learn and contribute to society over the internets all the while being immobilized from the neck down, what special circumstances should be levied for John McCain, if in fact the physically disabled people of this world of all shapes and sizes (and dexterities) make every effort to stay in touch?
He definitly is rich enough to afford the hardware and the software. And if he truly is the Senate’s saviest technologist, then he would know what tools companies have come up with to help the physically disabled.
After all, we are talking about a guy who on the one hand, “read[s] e-mails all the time,” but, “never felt the particular need to e-mail.”
PresidenToor on September 13, 2008 at 1:26 AM
I am of course referring to the New Kind of Politics which Obama is supposed to represent, above the fray, rejecting all that partisanship of the past, ready to move forward to a new age of progress.
But it does look just like the old, nasty partisan politics of the past. Why, it’s almost enough to make you wonder what happened to Hope and Change…
theregoestheneighborhood on September 13, 2008 at 1:30 AM
…but I bet you’ve been depressed, lately.
Entelechy on September 13, 2008 at 1:33 AM
You’re out of touch. Email is already yesterday’s technology. Modern technology is text messaging. If you really want to show McCain is out of touch, point out that he never sends text messages.
But the ad is a much, much bigger mistake than that. The ad doesn’t just mock McCain for something he finds hard to do because of his POW injuries. It also by proxy mocks every senior citizen who feels uncomfortable using email or the internet, and occasionally gets a grandson or granddaughter to help out.
And as we all know, younger voters don’t vote nearly as much as older voters.
Politicians don’t get elected by insulting the voters. It’s just like the old phrase, “You never win an argument with your customers.”
theregoestheneighborhood on September 13, 2008 at 1:39 AM
Well said! You know, standing here on the eve of OfflineOldGuyGate, looking back over the flaming wreckage of Obama’s campaign, I remember when he was selling himself as the fresh, energetic young reformer, an American success story filled with Hope and Change, who wanted to usher in a new kind of politics. The man who would one day be tapped as his running mate proclaimed him “clean and articulate.” My question is: why doesn’t the Democrat Party actually have anyone like that? All the new politics, Hope and Change stuff is bitterly hilarious, after watching how fast his campaign degenerated into pure savagery after Sarah Palin teamed up with McCain. Even hapless old Joe Biden was proved wrong on both counts, in his patronizing assessment of Obama – no one who’s heard him speak extemporaneously would describe him as “articulate,” and after his campaign and followers spent weeks wallowing in sleaze, he’s far from “clean.” Why isn’t there one single person of political stature among the Democrats who even vaguely resembles what Obama touted himself as being?

So McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer. Does Obama know how to fly a jet fighter?
Who exactly is more technically skilled here? Is playing Solitaire on your PC equivalent to managing electromagnetic countermeasures against North Vietnamese surface-to-air missiles while you’re flying a pop-up attack at 400 knots? Is Obama flying his Excel program off a carrier deck? How many people have died when they made a minor mistake when working in Word?
It is intuitively obvious to every Joe Bagadonuts walking down the street that flying a fighter jet is more technically demanding than flying PowerPoint. Obama the bumbler is telegraphing his own technical illiteracy by making this absurd attack ad which also demonstrates his incompetence in the contest of ideas. If this is how a perfectly alert Obama manages his campaign at 3 PM, I’d hate to see Obama as president when a crisis calls at 3 AM.
