Why can’t McCain e-mail? Boston Globe explained it in 2000; Update: So did Forbes

Earlier today, Barack Obama’s campaign released an ad attacking John McCain for not knowing how to send an e-mail. Their crack research team apparently never heard of Google or Lexis-Nexis, but Jonah Goldberg does. He discovers why McCain doesn’t use a keyboard — his torturers made sure he couldn’t. The Boston Globe reported it eight years ago:
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.
After Vietnam, McCain had Ann Lawrence, a physical therapist, help him regain flexibility in his leg, which had been frozen in an extended position by a shattered knee. It was the only way he could hope to resume his career as a Navy flier, but Lawrence said the treatment, taken twice a week for six months, was excruciatingly painful.
”He endured it, he wouldn’t settle for less,” said Lawrence, who rejoiced with McCain when he passed the Navy physical. ”I have never seen such toughness and resolve.”
Making fun of a war hero’s severe injuries — smooth move, Team O. Talk about computer illiteracy! Doesn’t anyone on the Obama campaign know what they’re doing? Didn’t it ever occur to them that a man who can’t raise his arms above his head might have a physical barrier to using a computer?
If this is what happens when they takes the gloves off, maybe they should just keep them on in the future.
Update (AP): I’m not sure how he’s accessing the ‘Net given his injuries, but he does appear to have some kind of access. From an NYT interview in July:
Q: What websites if any do you look at regularly?
Mr. McCain: Brooke and Mark show me Drudge, obviously, everybody watches, for better or for worse, Drudge. Sometimes I look at Politico. Sometimes RealPolitics, sometimes.
(Mrs. McCain and Ms. Buchanan both interject: “Meagan’s blog!”)
Mr. McCain: Excuse me, Meagan’s blog. And we also look at the blogs from Michael and from you that may not be in the newspaper, that are just part of your blog.
Q: But do you go on line for yourself?
Mr. McCain: They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need – including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.
Maybe he’s able to move the mouse so he can access sites bookmarked for him?
Update (Ed): Jonah Goldberg makes an excellent point in an update:
Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don’t think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can’t grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can’t understand first order national security issues because he’s never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting “send” on AOL or fighting a war?
In fact, didn’t Obama just make all of those arguments valid and fair?
Update II: Ace notes that Forbes Magazine noted McCain’s disability in 2000, too:
In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate’s savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. “She’s a whiz on the keyboard, and I’m so laborious,” McCain admits.
How difficult was this for a campaign to find before they ran an ad embarrassing themselves?

During the time that Rush was going through his problems, I felt for him, but I was very angry with him that he ‘allowed’ this to happen to him. He should have been stronger. But his problems began from back surgery and the pain from that. One of the things that made me smile, was the people who repeated the: “Even on drugs, Rush is right!” phrase. Really made me smile. And it was absolutely true.
I have no idea what McCain’s day to day pain level is from his injuries, but we know that he’s accepted the limitations of his body. The fact that he needs someone to comb his hair is something that can be very frustrating, as most people would resent the fact that they would be dependent on someone else. Even if it’s just combing his hair.
If for any reason that McCain had to take more pain killers to be able to tolerate his day -
I’d rather have McCain in the oval office struggling with his problems as long as he can tough it out himself –
than tolerate some a*hole condescending empty suit such as Obama in the oval office.
Dave Rywall, chew on that. If you are here to make us depressed about our situation, or how McCain should be more conservative, or that he has personal problems that he is dealing with – and you think you can chip away at us to your benefit and our (McCain’s) detriment, I will tell this to you.
You are a failure. I know that I want nothing more than to help McCain into office with my single vote, and I will do anything and everything I can to keep Obama out. Yo’ve failed. What you want to do? The exact opposite is the effect. Read these pages and others. You are hurting your cause, and playing your part in bringing us together.
Just wanted you to know that. Have a nice day.

Seems so clear to me that Obama’s desperation will lead him to choose a desperate option, one he hopes will be a game-changer. Now, what might that game-changer be?
Either Biden’s on his way out, or something wild like that, or I need to quit eating these wonderful autumn mushrooms.

Since when did facts have a role in negative campaign ads from either side? Perhaps you can assume that Obama’s ad team didn’t know that McCain can’t use a computer- if that’s even the case given the many types of alternative input devices that exist today.

Careful Ed, It seems as if you want to join on to team Obama (a.k.a. Team Titanic).
I’m sometimes critical of McCain’s use of his POW experience. For example his explaining away the fact he doesn’t know how many homes he owns with the quip he once didn’t even have a bed. But this response is brilliant and scorched earth.

I said almost the exact same thing, it’s funny how Gov. Palin has, in a way, forced me to take a longer look at Sen. McCain. Now I realize that he is everything the U.S.A. stands for and whatever differences we have on issues are hardly insurmountable.
Cindy Munford on September 12, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Computer literacy is overrated. Moral literacy is lacking today. Let’s start needling the candidates about how they’ve dealt with verifiable moral challenges.
A good leader can always find someone to type for him. The White House, I would presume, has a secretarial pool.
Can he lead, though? That’s what you ask yourself. How does he break the stuff on the “to-do” list down and delegate it. Can he lead…and in which direction…and why….
Begin to ask the question of Obama, and — after the fluff’s settled — he’ll look less the messiah and more the machine pol.
Puritan1648 on September 12, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Is email literacy a prerequisite for CNC?
If so, why?
Kini on September 12, 2008 at 10:50 PM
As usual, you miss the point. If Team Obama had the slightest clue of the facts, they would never have run this ad. It matters not if McCain uses adaptive technology or not. They clearly did not bother to check. And so they look like d*cks. Just like you do.
Missy on September 12, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I know and I agree, E. But Obama may soon understand how desperate his condition. And desperate lefties will promise anything, knowing they can cross all their bridges later.
But why might Hillary swing for it. Maybe BO would promise to let her have the next four years. More likely, Hil would go for it because she sees the prospect that a Palin VP in 2008 may well be an almost unbeatable Palin P in 2012 and possibly again in 2016. So if she wants to preserve her shot at it, she best do it now.

It is so typical of the liberals to push equality for everybody but Republicans. They are the worst of all the bigots. They hate anybody that doesn’t think like them. So they hate a lot more people in the end than just a single race. Such is the nature of elitism and intolerance.

Sarah Palin has a hard-working husband and 5 kids. Sarah Palin has a kind of funny Canadian type of accent. Sarah Palin is short and physically attractive like a kid sister. Sarah Palin gave a pretty good speech at the Repub convention. Sarah Palin has acquitted herself pretty well so far. Sarah Palin has less than 60 days before her election where people will vote for Sarah Palin for VP, or for that other guy. Sarah Palin is running with McCain against two other guys. Sarah Palin is fairly young. Soon Sarah Palin will have one VP debate with some other guy.

This quote is an example of the fundamentally flawed thinking of Democrats.
bayam- take a moment to actually think. Yes, even Stephen Hawking CAN use a computer with a complex series of devices. But is it PRACTICAL for the work that needs to be done? In Hawking’s case, what choice does he have? But in Sen. McCain’s case, his job is to talk to people, represent his state. He’s got every expert in the world available in a second on his cell phone. Why would he waste the time to bang at a keyboard with a pencil or use some other complicated contraption when he can just as easily have anyone on his staff or in his family do time wasting things like typing emails? Calling the head of the NSA is a hell of a lot more productive than googling “What is Iran up to?” or searching GoogleEarth for a 5 year old satellite picture of Iran. McCain get’s picture taken of what he wants, anywhere in the world, when he wants it.
He’s got better things to do. In January, one of them will be running the country and being leader of the free world. Fortunately for you, Obama will still have plenty of time to sit around updating his MySpace page and entertain morons like you who are so easily impressed with light shows and shiny objects.
Damiano on September 12, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I’m hoping the campaign lets it hang there. Then, I’m hoping the MSM will pick it up. And I’m hoping that Obama is at least man enough to admit it this incredibly insensitive blunder.
But if a proper response doesn’t happen soon, and I have no idea regarding how long that would be, then some Republican official have to speak up very loudly. This should not be left to unofficial surrogates or internet postings.

I think McCain can use a keyboard to a point yet it is painful to use it. People like to point out various things about his war injuries that he seemed to have more flexibility etc. when he was younger (like him being able to move his arms higher), yet you also got to understand as someone ages those old war wounds become even more debilitating as time goes by. If someone received war injuries to the legs severely and went through therapy to walk again and go on to lead a normal life (to a point), later in age, that person still would not be able to ride a bike or go around on their feet as quickly if they didn’t receive such wounds. Really, the ad is suppose to reflect McCain being out of touch because of his age, yet in actuality it makes fun of a partially disabled senior. Not a very good move on Obama’s part.

just felt the need to comment that as a long-time reader and occasional commenter at the old Captain’s Quarters it’s interesting to see that a few of the trolls who infested that esteemed blog have migrated here.
Nice to see Dave, and Alphie, and Monkei, and Bayam here to demonstate that unfortunately, stupidity ISNT painless.

The Boston Globe article was from 2000, I would be really shocked if they get involved with the current dust up. Especially since it “their” guy. I think the blogs will push it, it is funny how often I see stuff here then on the news. As a matter of fact I heard of Gov. Palin here first, it was odd to hear the MSM say she was a surprise and no one had ever heard of her.

Gotta be a bot.

Poo. make that painful.

See Dave Rywall? You can really learn from this master troll. The trick is to not be too obvious like you’ve been so far. You need a more subtle, nuanced approach like your buddy here.

Hubris. Obama’s pride is almost like a Greek tragedy. If it weren’t for the fact that the thought of his election disturbs me greatly, I would feel sorry for him. But I’d much rather feel sorry for him after he “falls” this Fall.

And it sure as hell is entertaining.
