Whoopi to McCain: “Do I have to be worried about becoming a slave again?”

The ‘Busters have the transcript. This isn’t quite the offensive idiocy it might seem at first blush; she’s asking a (mostly) rhetorical question about constitutional theory to challenge McCain’s stance on Roe, i.e. whether following the Founders’ intent is such a hot idea given that their Enlightenment views weren’t quite fully enlightened. One possible answer: We can correct the Founders through the amendment process. That’s what we should have done to legalize abortion and that’s what we did to ban slavery. Or did you miss that lesson in first-grade history, Whoopi? McCain’s response: Hey, good point! Groan.
Still, insofar as you don’t often see questioners shameless enough to ask Republicans whether they want to bring back slavery (even on MSNBC), it’s a golden TV moment. Exit question: If McCain’s uncontrollable rage is 1/1000th as bad as the left would have you believe, shouldn’t his righteous indignation at being asked this have sent him into an Incredible Hulk-ish meltdown?

It’d be awesome if McCain just paused and said, “Where are your eyebrows?”
Pasalubong on September 12, 2008 at 2:52 PM
He didn’t say good point, he said he understood what she was trying to say.
lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 2:52 PM
He handled it well.

Won’t even waste time watching it, Allah.

she’s as ugly as she is stooooopid.
but it she ever had an independent thought she wouldn’t be on the democRAT plantation.
right4life on September 12, 2008 at 2:54 PM
This wasn’t nearly as bad as I had believed by reading the transcripts. They were fairly deferent to him.

Her point was stupid. Why did McCain even go on this stupid show?

Whoopi – isn’t she the one that thinks Palin wants Alaska to “succeed” from the union?
capitalist piglet on September 12, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Excellent comment from Whoopi and a great way to show ordinary people how insane Hollywood liberals are. The only thing better would have been if McCain had asked her if she had ever been a slave.
DFCtomm on September 12, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Wasnt it the supreme court that kept slavery legal; while the amendment process made it illegal?
lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Whoopi, thanks for dressing.
I’m sorry. That’s racist.

Ron Paul was better on this issue on The View than McCain…
ninjapirate on September 12, 2008 at 2:55 PM
I am always astounded to see black women defending abortion… an extension of the movement of Margaret Sanger, who’s goal was basically to eliminate “less desireables like the handicapped and minorities”.

Uh, Whoopi, when an amendment voids original intent, the original intent is moot.

When the hell was Whoopi Goldberg ever a slave?!?!
Tengripundit on September 12, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Hey Whoopi, one really good way for you to not to have to worry about becoming a slave again (what, you were once a slave? Are you that old?) is to be armed. Own a few guns and ammunition.

Because he’s running for President and there’s some benefit going on these stupid shows because they have large audiences of the kind of voter McCain hopes will be attracted by his choice of Palin.

Right to an Abortion, It is NOT in the Constitution.
It should be a State matter, and States should decide and craft their own abortion laws, as they do, Similarly as to how they do Gun laws and “Gun Control” issues.
Chakra Hammer on September 12, 2008 at 2:58 PM
The best response is to compare Roe to Dred Scott…both cases where the US Supreme Court was morally wrong.
Hammertime on September 12, 2008 at 2:58 PM
The best answer he could have given would be “Don’t be an idiot”.
madne0 on September 12, 2008 at 2:58 PM
Why on earth did he waste time going on the view?
It was a poor response on his part to an easy question. Mention the amendment process, then take a shot at libs for continually attempting/succeeding to amend the constitution via the judicial process. Also take a shot at the legislative branch for continually punting issues like abortion down the road.
Hammerhead on September 12, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Goes back to the whole “sense of fairness” vs. “constitution as written” issue. Amending the constitution to rectify injustices (i.e. 13-15th amendments) takes too long. Better to have it done in one fell swoop. Nevermind that’s what dictators do. “Don’t tell me words don’t have any meaning!!”
Whoopi is the house moron on the show (and yes, I know, that’s saying a lot) but she’s a damn sight better than Rosie.
zmrzlina on September 12, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Republicans led the opposition to slavery and racial discrimination… maybe he should have mentioned it?

I would watch it but I just ate lunch and if I hear that twit Joy Behar unleash one or her idiotic takes, I’d probably projectile vomit all over the house.
That show is utterly useless. Anybody who relies on those twits for any sort of legitimate political analysis should now be allowed to vote.

Another possible answer: “Only if President Obama decides to volunteer you for public service.”
PersonFromPorlock on September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Mac should have dead-panned: “Yes”.
Then just sit there for about ten seconds and say, “Just kidding….or am I?”
Bishop on September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM
That doesn’t matter to morons.
Metro on September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM
1) Whoopi apparently confuses playing a slave on TV with actually having been a slave.
2) She also seems to think the Constitution prescribed slavery, which it did not. In fact in it were the seeds of Abolition.
2)Listen to the boos from the audience. Where do they get these people for the View? DNC HQ?
3)
Dr. Manhattan on September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM
It’s always easy to have the line after the fact, but it would have been an excellent time to point out the mechanism of amendment and the difference between that process and making it up as you go along.
Ah, well…I’m sure he’ll get to it in the debates.
Typhoon on September 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM
I have a theory about that.
Last night, we watched Governor Palin take a pop quiz from a hostile male media figure. Though he treated her with contempt, she maintained her composure. This morning, Senator McCain was swarmed by a bunch of hostile, not-too-deep liberal women in the media. He kept his cool.
Maybe they figure if they go into the Belly of the Beast, and let the left-leaning media take their best punch, more Americans will see how absolutely biased against them the media really is. Perhaps they are figuring Americans will take that into consideration for the rest of the campaign.

AubieJon on September 12, 2008 at 3:01 PM
And then Bahbwa says, Don’t worry, us white folk will protect you!” Such ignorance! If you could go back in the slavery time machine, us “white folk” would be the slave owners – again! Sherry had it right. Her response to Whoop and Babs was “O – my – God…” (shakes head).
Mr_Magoo on September 12, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Should have asked her when was she ever a slave. He is way too nice to people that hate him with a passion.

Subliminal message “vote McCain and slavery will be back”? The very thought of bringing this up, in any context, is insane.

Stick to non-political comedy, Whoopie: you are clear out of your league when you try to voice an opinion on national affairs, and you’re just exposing yourself as foolish and clueless.

We have a winner!
The Supreme Court’s Dredd Scott decision, which was overturned through the Congressional & individual State procedure of amending the Constitution with the 13th & 14th Amendments.
However, please don’t try to use history, facts, or reason to help dissuade the elite liberals, or you will be judged guilty of contempt! (Sorry, no jury of your peers.)

Not surprised with Whoopie. She’s a whack job.
I thought Barbara was really abrupt and rude to him. Hmmmm…I Wonder if Obama had the same kind of warm welcome?
artchick on September 12, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Whoopie’s remarkably well-preserved.
She’s obviously older than she looks.
‘Coz the last person who could have been born a slave in 1865 would be at LEAST 143 years old.
The only way she could be worried about becoming a Slave AGAIN.
What do these liberal whack-jobs think we want to do…reverse the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution???
Sheesh…and they accuse US of fearmongering!!!
Hypocrisy!!!

Just once, you’d like to see someone say, “yeah, Whoopi, you should worry. I wanna be leader of the free world so I can enslave and abuse black people.” and then snort at the asininity of such a question.
The more McCain talks, the more he should shut up and let Sarah talk.
Joan of Argghh on September 12, 2008 at 3:06 PM
I was hoping to hear McCain say, “Are you older than me, that you were a slave?”
Then I would have pointed out that slavery was made illegal by an Amendment. It’s called the 13th Amendment. Abortion was made federally legal by a legal case that actually violated the 10th Amendment. That’s why instead of calling it an Amendment, we call it Roe v. Wade.
I really wish people would get at leeast a remote, fundamental understanding of how our government works before they talk about government.
Spc Steve on September 12, 2008 at 3:07 PM
Thanks, Whoopi. I mean it. McCain’s team ought to give her a per diem for that comment.

carbon_footprint on September 12, 2008 at 3:08 PM
I’m not so sure. The audience for the more balanced shows is significantly better, you are not insulted and the behavior is not contemptuous. It is almost pandering to patronize them by attending.
I would seriously doubt that many in that audience or viewer demographic will be swayed by any candidate or nominee he picks. Conservatives are often too willing to ‘blink’ and think we can be ‘friends’. Better to see the relationship the way it really is: they want to destroy you.

sven10077 on September 12, 2008 at 3:09 PM
that’s what you get when you try to explain constitutional law to retards. he should have asked them if they’ve actually read roe v. wade and explained that it basically gives women the right to choose based on viability of the fetus. so what happens when/if babies become viable far earlier in the pregnancy term due to medical science? no more abortion rights. then perhaps they’d agree it was a craptastic decision based on rights non existent in the constitution.

What the heck is it about Whoopi Goldberg that you know, you just know, that she is going to say something that is going to make her come across looking like a complete incompetent jackass? If anything, I admire McCain more for his reaction here.
Now if anyone wants to see an example of someone else being a real jackass, see if YouTube is posting Brad Garrett’s appearance on Fox and Friends today. Him and Steve Doocy really got into it off camera to the point that Doocy called it the most horrendous interview they ever did on that show.

First, EH is lovely.
And McCain’s strength is NOT the Constitution, so he did well enough here considering. And he said no legislation from the bench. Which is awesome.
News to Whoopi. “Slave” and “Slavery” isn’t even in the Constitution until the 13th Amendment. An amendment answer would have been better.
