Video: The obligatory “Geraldo knocked over by hurricane wave” clip
posted at 1:45 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit
I wasn’t going to post it, just because it’s not worth the aggravation of the faux-outraged “you’re laughing at his misfortune!” complaints, but (a) he’s perfectly fine, and (b) if Martha MacCallum can giggle at it, so can we.
Exit question: What happened? Just a rolling tide of sea water with a nasty undertow, or did Poseidon spit on him? Click the image and scroll down to watch.

That was funny. I didn’t even make a pretense of being concerned that Geraldo was nailed with a wave.
It was friggin’ hilar.

I hope it was Poseidon.
Though I am in constant awe at his ability to have continued employment, given his complete lack of skill.

“This water’s filthy!! And although you probably can’t see it at home, it’s teeming with piranhas and Great White Sharks…the Humanity!!! ”
That was about 1% of the wave I’d like to see smack that tool.

Even Jim Cantore is on the second floor of a shopping center, and will be retreating to the San Luis Resort later this afternoon. Seawall Blvd. isn’t exactly the place to be right now.
What a tool.

CyberCipher on September 12, 2008 at 1:57 PM
It can be very bad very quickly. The seawall is something like 17 feet and they’re face 21 foot+ surge. The storm hasn’t even arrived and the water’s already topping the wall.
amerpundit on September 12, 2008 at 1:57 PM
That’s what people watch Geraldo in a hurricane for – the knockdown.
jbarkley on September 12, 2008 at 1:57 PM

Heh. “Washed up”. Geraldo. heh
Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 1:58 PM

I love Geraldo – the man is one-of-a-kind.
He’s Geraldo for goodness sake.
jake-the-goose on September 12, 2008 at 1:59 PM
The seawall is, well, an illusion. It protects downtown only. The surge will go over the barrier island and up Galveston Bay. A bunch of the Cocaine Condos will need disaster relief funds to rebuild.

That was funny but this storm isn’t. I’ve seen a few local reporters get smacked with waves this morning. They plan on leaving when things get too bad. Guess Geraldo will be sticking it out til the end. I’m sitting here waiting for it to hit Houston.
Here’s some local Ike coverage.

Irony, getting on the TV telling people to run for their lives but you stay and film. Several years he almost lost his pants standing out in a hurricane. Anybody on the beach received their invitation to the Mensa picnic this year?
Cindy Munford on September 12, 2008 at 2:11 PM
I’m glad he’s ok….
Not because I give a rat’s petute about him, but because if he was… it would be on his resume….
… risked his life to bring you coverage of the Iraq war
… helped refugees during Katrina
… injured in his coverage of Hurricane Ike
( Gag )
The man is legend in his own mind
jrlingreenbay on September 12, 2008 at 2:12 PM
The storm surge could be magnified because the Texas coast is a gentle slope into the sea. The waves will be half salt water and half Texas mud (we don’t have sand).

I live in Louisiana. During Gustav, ya’ll I am sure saw Geraldo on the bridge overexagerating the guy in the water? It was a rescue diver doing a search of a boat…lol.
Now we got Geraldo taking one for the team literally.
Seriously, is there going to be an investigation into why reporters risk alienating their families in order to be outside in a hurricane? Its a hurricane, we know, you really dont have to be outside in it for us to get the full effect.
Its akin to watching the guy strap on a shark suit, then watching him go and test it out. Just let me know the end result, b/c I dont want to see it in action.
TheHat on September 12, 2008 at 2:18 PM
LOL! Nothing funnier than Mustachio being knocked on his ass by a hurricane! Do you think FoxNews puts him in these extreme weather projects on purpose? I’ll bet O’Reilly’s behind it.
Mustachio is such a drama queen.
ErinF on September 12, 2008 at 2:18 PM
It bears repeating just how dangerous this storm is. After the Great Storm of 1900, the seawall was built. It has a curvature to actually force the waves back at sea. This seawall has protected downtown Galveston for close to 100 years. The fact that the water is spilling over onto the road, tells us how HORRIBLE this storm is going to be.
Lim is right. Most of the west end of the island is already under water (the part that is NOT protected by the seawall) and people who own homes there can probably expect the water to reach their homes. Remember that these houses are on stilts.
The scope of this cannot be overstated. The storm surge from Ike will most likely be worse than Katrina and Rita.
I have family in Houston and in the Galveston/Kemah area. Everyone is very sad, but safe. Our Houston family has “sheltered in place” and the Kemah family has evacuated.
Anyway, Geraldo falling down is funny, but the storm is not.
pullingmyhairout on September 12, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Bad enough we’re about to be smacked around by this hurricane. Do we need to suffer through this ass-clown too?
SailorDave on September 12, 2008 at 2:19 PM
LOL! No, it’s not, but I’ll quote from the Census Bureau:
My husband attended Texas A&M Galveston. When I went to visit him (and eventually moved to Seabrook), I was amazed at the stark contrasts between the main thoroughfare — Broadway — and the interior island, where it seemed most of the buildings were held together by layers of paint…and were definitely of the low-income variety.

TheHat on September 12, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Echoing carbon_footprint, “…may face certain death!” is an inherently ridiculous phrase. Geraldo, on the other hand, is just trying to bring you the story in the way that only truly Intrepid Journalists can. How else would we know what murky floodwater and windy rain look like, if we couldn’t observe it glancing off of his iconic moustache (or, in this case, dousing him ever so comically).
flip on September 12, 2008 at 2:26 PM
For a second i felt sorry for him.. (First time ever!)
I hope he’s OK.. !
Bet he’s going to be sore in the morning.. :(
Put some ice on it Geraldo!
See a doctor if you hurt yourself.
Chakra Hammer on September 12, 2008 at 2:26 PM
FYI–Geraldo just repeated what the government said: There was a warning last night issued by the Houston/Galveston office of the National Weather Service for the low-lying regions in the path of Ike that had this chilling line: “PERSONS NOT HEEDING EVACUATION ORDERS IN SINGLE FAMILY ONE OR TWO STORY HOMES MAY FACE CERTAIN DEATH”
This is going to be various stages of horrible bad, real bad and just bad all the way through Texas and some of Louisiana. Even Dallas-Fort Worth, which is about 6 hours in-land by car, is going to get 50-60 mph winds and possible flooding tomorrow. I can only imagine how bad this will afffect Galveston and Houston and some of the oil production and refineries.

This storm is really bad…Texas will really be hurt, but we in West Texas won’t see much of it. Fox – please send Shep to be with Whoraldo.
thebookkeeper on September 12, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Heh – a few seconds ago, he noted that, because of the advance warning, he didn’t expect many injuries or deaths… “except dumb ass reporters” who go out in the storm. Spot on, Gerry.
flip on September 12, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Agreed. DH and I are watching the coverage and very sad that some of our favorite places on the island likely won’t be there when the water recedes.
Glad your family took the warnings seriously and got out. We have a friend who runs an art gallery on The Strand — she had friends who were staying, even as she was leaving. It frustrates and saddens me to think that so many people learned nothing from the 1900 storm, nor from Katrina and Rita. =\
ScaryBiscuits on September 12, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Well actually, Geraldo has put himself in danger LOTS of times.. so I guess this isn’t the “first time” I was worried about him.. :(
But, need to Stand in the water to try and get to the “Best shot” just have you camera man pan over.. sheesh..
Chakra Hammer on September 12, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Chakra Hammer on September 12, 2008 at 2:34 PM
Scary,
I grew up in the Houston/Galveston metro, going to all those places on TV. It is VERY sad to know they will probably be gone. People who stay on the island are fools.
Alicia was bad. This is going to be catastrophic.

Half our 350 tractors and trailers are off their last runs for a couple of days. Now you know why gas went up 20 cents here(DFW) overnight. I go in at 3pm to baby sit the routing until midnight. We’ve already painted all the counties in south east Texas red. No fuel deliveries tomorrow. Luckily the storm is projected to move quickly out of state and just be a depression by the time it reaches DFW and AR.
Limerick on September 12, 2008 at 2:43 PM
I was kinda hoping what you meant by knocked over by a wave was that Geraldo got knocked over the side of the pier and has not been seen since.

Anything for ratings.
Here on the north side of Houston we still have a couple of hours before getting the effects. At least is only a cat 2. If it was a cat 5 I would be a little more worried. Pray for those of us in the danger zones. Unfortunately there are quite a few around Galveston Bay who chose to not evacuate.
