Uh, WaPo, Saddam’s been gone for 5 years

Yet another stupid Palin smear arises today, on the front page of the Washington Post, no less. Anne Kornblut writes that Sarah Palin linked 9/11 to Saddam Hussein in telling troops departing to Iraq that they would be fighting the same people who attacked America. Perhaps the Washington Post hasn’t yet realized it, but Saddam and his regime have long since been dispatched to history:
Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”
The idea that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a view once promoted by Bush administration officials, has since been rejected even by the president himself. But it is widely agreed that militants allied with al-Qaeda have taken root in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion.
“America can never go back to that false sense of security that came before September 11, 2001,” she said at the deployment ceremony, which drew hundreds of military families who walked from their homes on the sprawling post to the airstrip where the service was held.
Watch the speech for yourselves:
(~4:30) You’ll be there in service to the same cause of freedom from tyranny and from violence. You’ll be there to defend the innocent from the enemies who planned, carried out, and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.
Now, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that the US now fights al-Qaeda remnants in Iraq, and not Saddam Hussein, who’s been dead for many moons now. His regime collapsed in the first weeks of the American invasion of Iraq in the spring of 2003, more than five years ago. Palin’s comment clearly doesn’t refer to Saddam Hussein or link 9/11 to him.
Bill Kristol notes the problem, and the dishonest response from the Post:
Kornblut’s interpretation of what Palin said is either stupid or malicious. Palin is evidently saying that American soldiers are going to Iraq to defend innocent Iraqis from al Qaeda in Iraq, a group that is related to al Qaeda, which did plan and carry out the Sept. 11 attacks. It makes no sense for Kornblut to claim that Palin is arguing here that Saddam Hussein’s regime carried out 9/11–obviously Palin isn’t saying that our soldiers are now going over to Iraq to fight Saddam’s regime. Palin isn’t linking Saddam to 9/11. She’s linking al Qaeda in Iraq to al Qaeda.
People can debate how intimate that connection is, and how much of the fight in Iraq is now against al Qaeda in Iraq–but it’s simply the case that Palin is not saying what Kornblut says she is, and that the Washington Post is, right now, leading its paper with a clear distortion of what Palin said.
What happened to the layers of fact-checkers and editors? Surely one of them must have recalled Saddam’s fall and death. At the very least, they could have Googled it to discover that we’re not fighting the government of Iraq any longer, and haven’t been for years, in order to understand that reference.
It’s probably the same people who haven’t noticed that their RSS feeds on politics and national news haven’t updated in five days.

Rebutting smears like these implies that they are worth rebutting. The MSM is in no way making “points” or stating “arguments” about Palin, they are trying to destroy her. Our response needs to be equal to the attack.

It doesn’t matter, guys. The News Media is already spinning Palin as a doofus who doesn’t know foreign policy and performed badly in the Charlie Gibson interivew. See a roundup by US News here.
We need to push the “Gibson sandbagged Palin” meme as hard as possible to distract from this growing media line. Then, we need to get McCain front and center again to lead the fight.

fossten on September 12, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Subtle, but unethical as hell.
Like children, leftists are pushing the envelope of the rules of attribution.
In the days of integrity, a journalist would attribute a quote to someone if they actually said it.
In the days of hard-left media, a “journalist” attributes to a speaker anything that leftist can imagine might be entailed from what the person said. The problem is, to do this with integrity, the “journalists” has to respect the actual rules of logic. But they don’t recognize logic. They think it’s a white patriarchal remnant that is used merely to oppress victims. This is not hyperbole, they actually teach your sons and daughters this crap in college.
Bottom line, if a leftist can imagine it might be true, a leftist can claim it’s a fact. Sort of like a drunk who tells himself “it’s always happy hour in some time zone.”
Have another drink, democrats.

Saddam Hussein was directly tied to Al Qaeda. Rich Miniter in “The Shadow War” chronicles over 40 instances of direct cooperation between Saddam and Al Qaeda prior to 9/11.
Most glaringly, Saddam harbored TWO Terrorist Training bases in Iraq, one of them was an Al Qaeda camp, and the other hosted Al Qaeda trainees. But of course, the Post ignores all that evidence.

Hubris, thy name is any media journalist. Alessandra Stanley, (in an article published in the International Harold Tribune), sets the perfect example of hubris in an industry so arrogant that they truly believe the sun rises and sets at their beckoning call. It is scary to think that the media believes that with a few strokes of the keyboard, they can shape the worlds view into their petty bubble of a perceived agenda. The elite media actually believe they are all “Woodwards and Bernsteins”—-their anointed “Prophets of Journalism”—-writing and broadcasting like they were parting the Red Sea or etching the Commandments in stone.
Example:
“Gibson, who sat back in his chair and wriggled his foot impatiently, had the skeptical, annoyed tone of a university president who agrees to interview the daughter of a trustee, but doesn’t believe she merits admission.”
Here, Mz. Stanley frames Charlie Gibson as the scholarly professor whose journalistic skills and wisdom rises above the PTA mom that conquered Alaska while the rest of the world waits for its turn.
Governor Sarah Palin would be well advised to use caution when doing these interviews with our esteemed media that will pick apart and parse any portion of her statements to fit their misanthropic solipsism. The ethics and integrity of the profession has slithered into the gutter of liberal socialism, and by the “Prophets”, they will shape the world into their own image—–one conservative hockey mom at a time.

Anyone with half a brain can see what the media is trying to do. It’s so blatant it’s becoming funny. Those without half a brain are voting for Obama.

NAME CHANGE!
“The WaPo has officially changed its name, after so many smears and objectionable tabloid reporting, to Wipe-O.

The only way you could dumb down your comments would be to type them by smashing your face into the keyboard. Assuming that’s not your current method.
Jim Treacher on September 12, 2008 at 11:25 AM
You know, I wonder about the intelligence of our loveable liberals here. J_Goght is screeching about “Pull out in Iraq, send them to Afghanistan” and hitting Bush for not doing it.
Except he is completely, utterly wrong: Bush IS sending troops that were going to Iraq to Afghanistan. I remember just recently a story about Bush sending a brigade of Marines that was supposed to go to Iraq to Afghanistan.
So, Goght–you fail. Completely. And Utterly.
AS for Drywall, well, it’s just standard practice. Outright lies on the front page of a major newspaper that smear a Republican? A “nitpick.” No need to worry! After all, the target is a Republican, so nothing is wrong in the good fight to impose communism on the American people, right?
I agree with Treacher: Drywall couldn’t dumb down anymore without resorting to the old monkey typing Shakespear method.

I’ll keep repeating this until the cows come home..
Headlines aren’t meant for anything other than later use…
The article doesn’t have to be truthful it will drop into obscurity..
The headline is what it’s all about.. It will be used in some ad.. by dems or their minions attempting to say Palin lied… with a byline:
Gov. Sarah Palin links war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks Sept. 12 Washington Post
theblacksheepwasright on September 12, 2008 at 11:31 AM
The Wapo article reminds me of the scene in The Blues Brothers when Elwood tells Jake
“It wasn’t a lie. It was just…bull$hit.”

Good one MTG, you and the Saint on that same “100 years of war” page.
The corruption in the Iraqi “leadership” [?] is almost unspeakable. The condoning of this fraud and malfeasance speaks very poorly of both our military and political leadership in country and in Washington.
US diplomats and generals that allow and even encourage this outrageous deception should be summarily fired and retired…!
The billion[s] we are wasting monthly will shortly be a trillion.
Barrack will be making radical changes in that military boondoggle, in very short order.
J_Gocht on September 12, 2008 at 11:38 AM
And they are all over this lie like stink on sh*t. Just browse the Huffington Post and the Daily Kos. Faithful little drooling dogs to a ringing bell that they are.
Good lord: FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska, Sept. 11 — Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.“
Ever see this photo before?
Bush once made some kind of remark about ‘the same people’ who knocked down the towers. No the same “People” but the ’same people,’ as in, the people who share the same ideology, or the same people who want us dead. The same people who use radical islam and hate us. Yes, these same people. ALQ in Iraq wasn’t in Iraq before 2003, but the “same” people is who we are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq(the few that are left) and in places like the muslim African nations who harbor terrorists, and other places. Those ’same people.’
