Uh, WaPo, Saddam’s been gone for 5 years

Yet another stupid Palin smear arises today, on the front page of the Washington Post, no less. Anne Kornblut writes that Sarah Palin linked 9/11 to Saddam Hussein in telling troops departing to Iraq that they would be fighting the same people who attacked America. Perhaps the Washington Post hasn’t yet realized it, but Saddam and his regime have long since been dispatched to history:
Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”
The idea that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a view once promoted by Bush administration officials, has since been rejected even by the president himself. But it is widely agreed that militants allied with al-Qaeda have taken root in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion.
“America can never go back to that false sense of security that came before September 11, 2001,” she said at the deployment ceremony, which drew hundreds of military families who walked from their homes on the sprawling post to the airstrip where the service was held.
Watch the speech for yourselves:
(~4:30) You’ll be there in service to the same cause of freedom from tyranny and from violence. You’ll be there to defend the innocent from the enemies who planned, carried out, and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.
Now, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that the US now fights al-Qaeda remnants in Iraq, and not Saddam Hussein, who’s been dead for many moons now. His regime collapsed in the first weeks of the American invasion of Iraq in the spring of 2003, more than five years ago. Palin’s comment clearly doesn’t refer to Saddam Hussein or link 9/11 to him.
Bill Kristol notes the problem, and the dishonest response from the Post:
Kornblut’s interpretation of what Palin said is either stupid or malicious. Palin is evidently saying that American soldiers are going to Iraq to defend innocent Iraqis from al Qaeda in Iraq, a group that is related to al Qaeda, which did plan and carry out the Sept. 11 attacks. It makes no sense for Kornblut to claim that Palin is arguing here that Saddam Hussein’s regime carried out 9/11–obviously Palin isn’t saying that our soldiers are now going over to Iraq to fight Saddam’s regime. Palin isn’t linking Saddam to 9/11. She’s linking al Qaeda in Iraq to al Qaeda.
People can debate how intimate that connection is, and how much of the fight in Iraq is now against al Qaeda in Iraq–but it’s simply the case that Palin is not saying what Kornblut says she is, and that the Washington Post is, right now, leading its paper with a clear distortion of what Palin said.
What happened to the layers of fact-checkers and editors? Surely one of them must have recalled Saddam’s fall and death. At the very least, they could have Googled it to discover that we’re not fighting the government of Iraq any longer, and haven’t been for years, in order to understand that reference.
It’s probably the same people who haven’t noticed that their RSS feeds on politics and national news haven’t updated in five days.

Left over BDS. They think she’s Bush in a skirt since she had the temerity to pray somewhere openly that we were making the right choice and that our soldiers would be safe.
Thus, they imagine that she is talking about Saddam Hussein.
Somebody should tell them that this is 2008.

Not that everyone who rejoices in the deaths of Americans are the people who we should go after – as much as – they are the ’same’ people. The same people who want to murder more innocent civilians. The same people who wish to use terrorism against us, if they could. The same people who want to topple governments and fight our allies.

The Lamestream Media dig deeply into their “news” morgues and archived former talking points/narrative to continue their propaganda. Lazy boilerplate is all that we get from them.
Truly, is there any news in their news?

My posting at Jake Tapper’s ABC blog about this:
The WaPo is already backtracking on their misreporting of this and have performed a “stealth edit” at their web site of the lying paragraph. So I guess that settles it that Governor Palin was NOT implying or saying outright that Saddam ordered 9/11 and that’s why Coalition troops are in Iraq.
And speaking of stealth edits, Mr. Tapper, how about ABC prove that it’s not part of the dinosaurs of the (print) media and put all of the unedited video footage online? You know, so we can really see everything that was asked and answered?
I realize that you’re not a “suit” at ABC, but maybe you can try to influence the brass to air all of the footage online. It’s what the hip kids would do.

When someone takes aim at Palin’s son with a rifle, or grenade launcher, they’ll very likely be following al-Qaeda’s orders when they do it. They certainly won’t be following Saddam’s orders.

We are killing members of Al Qaeda in Iraq by the thousands. They want to die. Sounds like a good time can be had by all.

[Senator John Sidney McCain]
Have you seen any of his latest interviews and quips on YouTube, lately?
I’m thinking he would be very well served to let Sarah handle all the pressers and interviews; her lack of knowledge concerning foreign and domestic relations, not withstanding.
The good Senator is having real difficulty recalling what positions he’s recently defined and specific statements he’s made just last week or even the day before?

Here is some news for you J, unlike the dems, the Republicans don’t want everyone in their “tent”.
People like you we don’t want as Republicans, so every time you post we say “yeah, we are glad you are with the other party”.
Get it? You can post all the negative stuff you want, we don’t want you in the party, your kind of thinking belongs with the democrats, and that is where we want you.
Every one of your posts, confirms why I am a conservative and different from a liberal…thanks.

It looks like Kornblut said the same thing Governor Palin did in the second paragraph of her story, but like a good lib she soldiered on with the smear.

With respect to Senator McCain’s short term memory loss; has he ever provided any medical records that indicate which prescription drugs he is taking, especially with respect to statins?
Is it possible that the present campaign is just too mentally stressful for a man of his advanced age?
I would say these are both very consequential and serious considerations that must be considered and addressed.

J_Gocht on September 12, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Will 2008 be the end of the end of the MSM? They think they can say anything and no one will know or be able to prove they have no credibility.
Me thinks this is why they are screaming like a stuck pig and looking for their lip stick.
How many people down the food chain at news papers and TV news departments will be losing their jobs, because the the faces of these businesses are running their businesses into bankruptcy?
All they need to do is to read the definitions of credibility, integrity and impartiality and see how far they are from the definitions.
But they are stuck on stupid.
DVPTexFla on September 12, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Gosh Rovin, I’m really conflicted.
Which is better; have Sarah issue misstatements due to lack of background experience or knowledge…?
That sort of issue can be politically spun later by the pundits.
Having John Sidney misstate or miss quote his own self is much more difficult to obfuscate or spin after the fact.
I remember distinctly his travels in Iraq; when Holy Joe had to continually advise him of the ethnic and military relationships between the Sunni, Shiites and al-Qaeda’s lack of any relationship with Iran for examples.
These kinds of obvious, continuing problems should honestly concern even a partisan like you!
J_Gocht on September 12, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Can someone point me to the speech or official statement from Bush that Saddam had a hand in 9/11 ?
This canard is touted so often but I have yet to see this ‘lie’ in an official statement.
DavidM on September 12, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Al Qaeda is finished. They made a classic military blunder. They allowed US to choose the time, place, and terms of the battlefield. The Romans made the similar mistakes with Hannibal more than 2200 years ago. This time, the other side WON’T be making a comeback.
If you don’t know anything about history, you are doomed to repeat it.

C_C, you’re kiddin’ of course?
We [Bush and Cheney]choose Iraq where we’re in a quagmire and they aren’t.
They choose long ago, Afghanistan and the tribal regions of eastern Pakistan, where their political influence is spreading and their military operations are expanding on a daily basis.
Even Admiral Mullins has stated as much, we’re in a world of hurt and actually possibably losing ground in Afghanistan this very day and hour!

Can we turn in Rywall and alphie for some decent trolls? I know they have a need to fill an inner emptiness with attention. But wouldn’t it be even better to have trolls with a command of the facts and ability to reason. Then they could get their sick needs met and stimulate thoughtful discussion.

She is NOT talking about Saddam, but why does the Liberal Media Always want to defend Saddam?
It was the Policy of the Unite States for Regime Change in Iraq.
The “Iraq Liberation Act” was the policy of the United States, that was signed by Bill Clinton, and was approved by unanimous consent in the Senate(Where was Joe Biden?) Saddam Hussein was paying the families of suicide bombers that kill people inside of Israel, and also funding other terrorist groups, Iran is a State Sponsor Of Terrorism, Saddam Hussein used WMD’s on his own people, we could not risk the chance of WMD’s in the hands of terrorists.
Why do these Liberals Still not get?

It is amazing to me that people respond to trolls who try to take over the thread with controversial statements.
These are obviously people in need of attention.
Nobody really believes some of the stuff they post, they do it just to get attention.
Just ignore them, they will post weird things, strange conclusions, just to get a response. Don’t respond, let them post and don’t respond, eventually they ignore you and go away.
Like the child who kicks his feet against the wall, just give them a time out and they settle down.
right2bright on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM
Bill Kristol thinks the remarks are stupid or malicious. How about both?
The obvious message is that these young service people are going to fight AlQaida in Iraq.
I think the most obvious error the Democrats make is to constantly assume that everyone else is stupid.
I can remember Bill Richardson and Bill Clinton and Al Gore blowing off about how dangerous Saddam was and how he had to be stopped blah blah blah, years before Bush ever came to office. Now with the help of their partisan fan club they are busy revising history and making the entire Iraq war something Bush did all by himself.
No, it was not. The intel passed to him by the Clinton people and the votes of Democrats have a lot to do with this war. Not to mention the fact that if we had just turned Saddam loose he would have gone right back to doing what he does best. Killing people and starting wars and causing trouble and breaking ceasing fires.
No, instead they create their own little narrative along with their willing accomplices in the media and just lie. They plain, flat out. LIE.

Unless every one of us starts to accept that our enemy is every single radical Muslim who believes that America has some crusade against Muslims everywhere, and who accepts radical Islamist dogma as the truth in this world (that Israel directs everything to keep Muslims down, and America is the Great Satan who does Israel’s Zionist bidding to kill Muslims anywhere and everywhere), and non Muslims are disposable infidels who may be killed without guilt when it is convenient to do so, and supposedly in Islam’s interests, then no one will ever understand how a link exists between 9-11 and Saddam. Everyone involved with the 9-11 plot believed America was evil and needed to be fought under the least civilized rules in the world today. Saddam cheered that attack, and had supported, with training and money, ANY movement which felt as al Qaida did. He was working on WMD and would give that WMD to terrorists to use as they wished.
Anyone associated with these radical Islamist thoughts needs to be opposed, chased to the ends of the Earth until they change their minds, or be killed. Attacking innocent Women and Children and Elderly people because they got in the way of attacking Americans, or weren’t “Islamic” enough to satisfy some terrorist thug, is an ideology practiced only by the most Evil people in this world. They need to be opposed, fought, and killed if THEY don’t submit to civilized conduct.
All this BS about claiming al Qaida and Saddam’s Iraq, or the Islamic State of Iraq (al Qaida’s shadow government there) had no links is pure BS. They were all Muslims who hated America and decided that mass catastrophic killings of innocent Americans was justified by some theological doctrine, however ill supported the majority of the Muslim faith believes that. Their bad apples either get corrected by Muslims themselves, or we’ll do it for them. Since they didn’t do it themselves, (because a small majority believes al Qaida is correct, and the rest of the Muslims in the world are too intimidated and indoctrinated by their faith to oppose a Muslim in favor of non Muslims), we have had to do so instead.
Like I said elsewhere. Leadership isn’t about going where everyone wants to go. It is about going where you have to go, even though you hate it, and doing what needs to be done to change this hatred of America and Jews by 1.4 billion Muslims in the world today.
If you folks can’t agree that is an enemy worth opposing, then define them yourselves and lets get on with fixing them.

Note to Ed: I just notice this and that’s why I didn’t say something sooner. When you put the tag line “Cluelessness, or worse” under the picture of our beloved Sarah, we all know you are talking about the Washington Post being Clueless.
But you know if someone highly infected with Palinmania was to see that and take it the wrong way, you might get attacked with a flamethrower. Just sayin…
Maxx on September 12, 2008 at 10:06 PM
I was moved by Sarahs speech
I loved how she called our soldiers ” Warriors ” which Im sure they did too.
There was no ambiguity in her account of their mission, who they are going to fight, who they are going to help and most of all the unconditional support she will bestow.
She spoke of ” Victory ” and of accomplishing great benevolent acts.
How could you not love her.
