“Tough” new Obama ad: Old man doesn’t use e-mail

posted at 12:20 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

Here’s what it looks like when The One “takes off the gloves.”

Frankly, I thought the previous 15 or so times he “took off the gloves” were much more effective. As it is, over at TNR, John Judis can’t hide his embarrassment. What’s especially stupid about the spot is that it’s a line of attack with a lot more downside than upside: No one outside of The One’s core nutroots constituency is going to be offended at the thought of McCain relying on one of his thousand aides or secretaries to answer messages, but there may be some offense taken by the 20 percent of Americans who don’t use e-mail themselves — many of whom are no doubt senior citizens.

And senior citizens are known for high turnout, aren’t they, Barry?

Exit question: If Internet savvy is a basic qualification for leadership in the modern age, how can it be that Billy Jeff — still a major figure in the Democratic Party and the head of an influential global charity — sent exactly two e-mails as president and remains offline to this day?

Weak, weak ad.

However, the fact that McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer is unacceptable. It’s 2008.

Didn’t Biden come to the senate before 1982? There must be some subliminal message in there that only liberals can see.

And senior citizens are known for high turnout, aren’t they, Barry?

Who’s running Obama’s camp? The nutroots? Has Obama’s camp gone brain-dead? I can see the elderly lined up outside the voting booths in Ohio and PA now!

Going back 26 years would put Obama at 21. Exit question: are we going to see a McCain ad dealing with Obama doing coke?

BuckeyeSam on September 12, 2008 at 12:43 PM

If you really think about it, B.O. shoots himself point blank in the foot with the very opening of this ad:

“1982: John McCain goes to Washington.”

Meanwhile, B.O. has actually been actively serving in the Senate a total of 143 days.

Kind of sends that “doesn’t know how to send an email” argument sailing right out the window, huh?

Unacceptable, huh? Tell me, what tasks of a US Senator are dependent upon use of a computer?

This ad will hurt him more with the Republican base who knows he does not understand a simple demand curve in economics.

Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 12:45 PM

I would say if there was any doubt of a huge turnout of seniors for McCain, you can put that one to rest. When you insult an older person for being old, other older people tend to take offense. I have no doubt this is another distortion of a self-deprecating joke McCain told about himself. I don’t want a president who is constantly checking his blackberry (like me) during meetings. I want him concentrating on the issues. You just know if Obama is elected, we’re going to have the Obama Twitter reports.

Dave Rywall on September 12, 2008 at 12:40 PM

First of all, 1/5 of the country doesn’t use email. And even if we were all over him, the RNC or McCain wouldn’t be launching attacks on him based on that. You know why? Because it pisses off older voters while only ensuring you’ve shored up the MySpace crowd — a notoriously unreliable bloc.

amerpundit on September 12, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Allah and everybody else in here,

Consider McCain’s limited movements in his arms and shoulders (not to mention possible arthritic condition that may have been brought on from the years of torture as a POW) do not allow him the flexibility and comfort to use a computer on his desk. Obama’s ad simply blew against people who do have a hard time using the computer because of arthritis or people who generally have limited arms/shoulders movements to work it. I am not at all surprised that McCain let his secretaries and aides do the work for him. Why make it harder on himself than it is with his disability?

We have an opening here…

I think the McCain/Palin campaign should hit back on how uncaring Obama is for people with disabilities.

I agree that the fact that McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer is kinda weird (and it is amusing when he talks about his fascination with the fact that you can purchase movie tickets and book airline fare online). However, this can be easily remedied by having the guy use a Blackberry once-in-awhile.

Illinidiva on September 12, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Obama’s ad simply blew it by unwittingly going after people who do have a hard time using the computer because of arthritis or people who generally have limited arms/shoulders movements to work it.

Folks, Team Obama is trying to energize their most loyal troops, THE NUTROOTS. They’re trying to light a fire under their youth vote.

The youth vote carried Obama in the Dem Caucuses. They think the youth vote can carry them in the general.

I think the youth vote requires the most hand holding. They’re very easy to turn from hyperactive to massively depressed. Obama needs to keep them hyperactive.

lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Well that does prove who is out of touch. Obama can’t even figure out who to run against. So he wastes time running against McCain’s VP and the guy who leaves office in January no matter what.

And runs commericials telling us how much of an experience gap there really is between the Freshman Senator and the Statesman.

And I believe Obama has doubts that those guys blowing things up after Sadam died were even Al Queda in Iraq. He really is out of touch.

A president/senator does not do his own wordprocessing so why does he need to use a computer anyway? And I doubt McCain with his injuries could type for long period of time even if he wanted to.

Weak ad. Bill Clinton is probably the only president to truly master the Internet. He could write a book on image files, IM chat and web cam installation (all safely ensconced in small offices with locking doors).

McCain should singe Barry’s ears by through fast and inside with a response ad that notes Barry’s associations, flip flops and weak chin positions while courage and honor never goes out of style.

moxie_neanderthal on September 12, 2008 at 12:53 PM

I’m still looking for the transcript of the National Service Forum when Obama listed all the things he would have done in response to 9/11 – like eliminate our dependence on foreign oil (of course, someone from the audience squeeled with delight – probably was Biden getting goosed). Yea, easy to say now, “I would have done that!” What a pandering tool.

Mr_Magoo on September 12, 2008 at 12:53 PM

It speaks of a certain weakness when you attack your political opponent for not using computers.

It brings us to: “Vote for Obama – Because when he is ruining the country he will be doing it with electronic gadgets that are so totally up to date.”

evenfarer on September 12, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Great. And I bet that Reagan didn’t even know CP/M as well as Walter Mondale. And Eisenhower liked Zane Grey novels. And the elder George Bush ate funky Mexican cuchifritos and didn’t know what a scanner was at WalMart and Bob Dole WAS 96 in ’96, and on and on.

My 8 year-old daughter knows how to use a computer better than Obama (and she can absolutely kick his skinny ass in “Spore”), so can she now become elected President?

Attack Palin for being a smart, hard-working- get-er-done superwoman: bring out supermoms in drives! Supermoms vote, are smart, don’t take prisoners, and have heard every lie there is from their own darling ones, so they aren’t so easily fooled either.

Thank you, Obambi! (Now I’m starting to believe there may actually be a vast right-wing conspiracy, to elect McCain-Palin!)

Your defense of McCain for being a dolt who doesn’t know how to use a computer: 1)McCain can fly an early 1970′s jet that contains some kind of computer and 2) Obama does not know how to fly a jet.

Amazing defense. Run with it.

Dave Rywall on September 12, 2008 at 12:55 PM

As I said in another thread.

McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer, Obama doesn’t know what language people in Afganistan speak.

McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer, Biden still, after 3 shots, doesn’t know the difference between a regimen and a brigade.

McCain doesn’t know how to use a computer, Obama doesn’t know what he worked on in the Senate and that agreeing to something doesn’t mean you wrote the bill.

The line McCain used to say he didn’t know how to email seemed more like a joke, hitting on his old age. But in true dem form the twisted his words and lied to everyone just to win.

james hooker on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 PM

If Obama didn’t know how to use a computer you yahoos would be all over him.
Dave Rywall on September 12, 2008 at 12:40 PM

My dog craps bigger than you.
TexasJew on September 12, 2008 at 12:56 PM

Your dog’s crap has better political insight than him.

wise_man on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Dave Rywall thinks this is a good ad. Let’s encourage him to join the Obama team!

Hey, Dave, yeah, right on dude, PLEASE join the Barack America team and make a whole flurry of ads mocking senior citizens who don’t use computers, but who did fight in wars. Then, PLEASE send more text messages at 3 am attacking Palin, maybe disparage women in the text like you did Hillary. BRING IT.

(like shooting tuna in a barrel, this is so freaking easy…)

JustTruth101 on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Hitting on McCain because he’s old. Not sure how well this will play in Florida. Don’t think it will play well with seniors, who are a large block that does vote

ConservativePartyNow on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 PM

McCain up by 4 in the AP-GfK Poll.

Pianobuff on September 12, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Notice they also used a younger voice than the one they’ve typically been using when linking McCain to GWB.

Dubn8tr on September 12, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Maybe they are running low on money and decided to fire the old guy, and hire a younger worker for less money.

Kevin71 on September 12, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Simple retort for the McCain camp:

“The Senator doesn’t read email. In politics, as we’ve seen since the selection of my Vice Presidential candidate, and the bile that has followed, that’s a good thing. The Senator prefers one-on-one engagement with voters, and town hall meetings to discuss hard issues. Senator Obama opposed Senator McCain’s idea of town hall debates, favoring instead programmed debates directed by his friends in the media.”

thirtypundit on September 12, 2008 at 1:01 PM

If McCain keeps preaching that the pork will end, he will win. Case closed, end of story.

With Obama standing for absolutely nothing, Biden being a jackass, and Palin’s mass appeal, McCain just needs to pound and pound and pound away on vetoing every bit of pork that comes across his desk. I think he will win on that alone.

In fact, I think every single ad of his from here on out should say, “I WILL NOT ALLOW ANY PORK!” over and over and over again. Moderates and conservatives alike are sick and tired of tax dollars being pissed away and we all believe government should be smaller.

And I also don’t think it’s a bad idea for Palin and McCain to disagree on a few issues like global warming. Let Palin be Palin. So what if she thinks it’s not man made and he does? She can just say, “We might not agree on the cause of global warming, but we do agree that we cannot cripple U.S. industry over this issue that is a point of contention between scientists.”

LET PALIN BE PALIN. Once she starts to look like a talking point drone you’re going to lose some people.

Amazing defense. Run with it.

Okay.

A computer.

Compare. Contrast.

1982: Obama snorting crack in the hood.

would be a good ‘take off the gloves’ follow up.

cntrlfrk on September 12, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Oh, btw, who gives a crap if he can’t use email; that’s what aides are for.

Metro on September 12, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Lame. Prehaps Obama should leave his gloves on when he punches?

petunia on September 12, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Boxers wear gloves so that they don’t hurt their own hands when they connect with their punches; that way, they can punch harder. Without gloves, their knuckles might do more superficial damage, cutting their opponent’s face and such, but they risk breaking their hands and have a hard time delivering the kind of impacts that knock the opponent out.

How much of that applies here?

Oh, snap.

JustTruth101 on September 12, 2008 at 1:03 PM

We have an opening here…

I think the McCain/Palin campaign should hit back on how uncaring Obama is for people with disabilities.

Kokonut on September 12, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Wow. I think a subtle response along those lines would be a slam dunk they never saw coming.

How is ageism any different from other forms of bigotry like sexism or racism?
