Oh, I see.

There are bigger forces at work in the commodity and financial markets right now than a hurricane. Any price blip will be minor and sort lived.

Sorry KosTrolls.

TheCulturalist on September 13, 2008 at 1:32 AM

I hope so, I feel slimy even thinking about next week given what those who are in Texas face. The evacuees were going up our highway late yesterday into today. I hope everyone who could got out.

The United States is in the very bad position of approaching the Japanese model of needing to import gasoline. That day will be a shock to the American people. I truly believe this election or one of the next two will be our last chance to undo the Sierra Clubbers’ damages to our energy system.

Sven. I assure you that you are indeed smaller than creation. And therefore, you are also smaller than Gore’s and Obama’s ego’s.

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 1:44 AM

Yes, Alfred Hitchcock. And actually, I do worry about the birds. People should always come first. But, the wonders of nature, and even the littlest things in nature can be enormous sources of comfort and inspiration. It’s not only angels who have wings. And also, I am old enough to see nature disappearing all around me. There are times I miss it.

Nothing we do on a large scale is without a range of good and bad consequences. The goal is to maximize the positive for humans and minimize the negative for both humans and nature.

However, in the case we were discussing, I doubt any birds would be coming out of Gore’s and Obama’s mouths.

Sorry, but sometimes it takes a while for me to type.

Sarah Palin is why.

She is a gift for the Republic.

The Sorrow and the Pity

When it comes to foreign policy, Sarah Palin doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

Gov. Palin was obviously briefed by Sen. John McCain’s advisers, and briefed fairly well. She recited what were plainly the main points of these tutorials with an assertive confidence familiar to those who engaged in high-school debate competitions.

But it was painfully obvious—from the rote nature of her responses, the repetitions of hammered-home phrases, and the non sequiturs that leapt up when she found herself led around an unfamiliar bend—that there is not a millimeter of depth undergirding those recitations, that she had never given a moment’s thought to these matters before two weeks ago.

Sarah Palin has judgement

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 2:23 AM

When Palin brought up her proximity to Russia (“They’re our next-door neighbor,” she proclaimed), Gibson asked what insights she derived from this fact. She replied:

Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relations with all of these countries, especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relations with our allies, pressuring also, helping us to remind Russia that it is their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along.

What does this mean? I have no idea, and I doubt that she does, either. It doesn’t help her argument of wisdom-through-osmosis that she has never been to Russia—or, shockingly really, any country outside North America, until last year, when she visited the troops in Kuwait and Germany. (Her P.S. after admitting she’s never met a foreign head of state—that probably a lot of other vice presidents hadn’t, either, before taking office—turns out to be untrue. ABC reported Friday morning that every VP since Spiro Agnew had taken such a meeting before getting tapped to be a running mate.)

Bollocks Kent. If by “meeting a head of state” you mean a wink and a nod I’ll grant ABC the point but AlGore was not in any way shape or form a mover and shaker, and Geraldine Ferraro even less so. Keep digging.

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 2:34 AM

The two most shuddering moments, however, came when Palin revealed her character. In a sense, character is more important than a specific bit of knowledge. A person can acquire knowledge. Character defines how much that person values knowledge, how curious she is, how keenly she wants to understand a subject deeply, and what she is likely to do once she achieves this understanding.

Thursday night’s interview suggests that Palin doesn’t value knowledge much at all, that she puts faith above facts and instincts above thinking.

We should start with the premise that the United States, like all sovereign nations, has the unilateral right to defend itself against attack. As such, our campaign to take out Al Qaeda base camps and the Taliban regime that harbored them was entirely justified… (I)f we’ve got (Osama bin Laden) in our sites, we should ask for Pakistan’s cooperation, we should ask Pakistan to take him out. But if they don’t, we shouldn’t need permission to go after folks that killed 3,000 Americans.

KentAllard on September 13, 2008 at 2:29 AM

A perfect example of something I wrote about earlier today. Those on the left are best at repeating “the facts” they are given. They don’t have original thoughts, but don’t know it. Everyone in their intellectual circle jerk has the same viewpoint, so they think they are right. Since they shout down alternative viewpoints and ignore facts contrary to what they believe, they never engage in critical thinking.

So, when one of their “thought givers” doesn’t understand something, that means it’s wrong. Not that they are ignorant or wrong, but that the other person must be. Since, after all, they, the elite, understand everything that is understandable.

Understand?

TheCulturalist on September 13, 2008 at 2:48 AM

“Let the jury consider their verdict,” the King said, for about the twentieth time that day.

“No, no!” said the Queen. “Sentence first–verdict afterwards.”

“Stuff and nonsense!” said Alice loudly. “The idea of having the sentence first!”

“Hold your tongue!” said the Queen, turning purple.

“I won’t!” said Alice.

“Off with her head!” the Queen shouted at the top of her voice.

And in many cases, it’s sentence first, verdict second, trial third, and investigation fourth. When you do it this way, you are most assured of obtaining the most damning evidence.

Loxodonta on September 13, 2008 at 2:51 AM

Or, to put it more simply, if you have already made up your mind that someone is guilty, it’s easy to see their faults.

Loxodonta on September 13, 2008 at 2:53 AM

You are more polite and less rabid than DryWall but that is similar to saying I weigh more than Luciano Pavarotti did….not very descriptive with a lot of space for wiggle room.

Sarah Palin must have either a thirst for knowledge or is the most successful conwoman in history. She is the chief executive of the largest energy producing state in the union. She is highly regarded for decisons she has made and bears the majority of responsibility for.

Now the lead opponent on the other side of the aisle has a resume at least as weak and a demeanor that screams “I already know it all”.

You are damn right I’d rather have the gutsy little overachieving reformer than the duplicitous underachieving chicago machine politico.

YMMV, and frankly I know it does

p.s. There was nobody left in serious contention for the Veep that was so much better qualified it was a no-brainer….

all had severe flaws, actually ALL THE CANDIDATES since ’88 have had severe flaws. The main job of the President of the United States is to shepered our military, conduct foreign policy, and be a check on the Congress. George Bush the elder was the last man I could find no argument with.

Your rebuttal?

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 2:46 AM

To what? Your continued most lacking defense of Sarah Palin? I could help you defend her without resorting to, “Well Obama is worse”, which is really no defense at all, except of absolute last grasping resort, and maybe at some future time I will and maybe I won’t.

KentAllard on September 13, 2008 at 2:58 AM

*weigh less than pavarotti though he had declined at death

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 3:00 AM

I’m watching Gibson on Nightline right now interviewing Palin. It’s family question time. Is it sexist to wonder about how you will raise a family while serving as VP?

Gee Chuck, it isn’t rocket science.

“A culture of life is best for America”. Well, there you go Chuck. What else ya got?

She has her positions and McCain has his. That’s pretty simple, even for the Dem’s. Probably why they hate it so much.

TheCulturalist on September 13, 2008 at 3:01 AM

I never have a prepared script memorized or on a teleprompter or podium every time I open my mouth. I am not a performer. So, sometimes I make mistakes. Sometimes I misremember things. Sometimes words come out wrong. Sometimes I wonder or get distracted. Does this mean I have no intellectual depth or curiosity?

Or, can’t you decide that until you know how I stand on certain issues?

It may not be my intellect or curiosity that is the problem, but my conclusions that are considered wrong. And if my conclusions are in error, therefore, my method of research must be wrong, and my intellectual skill must be lacking.

have I got that right?

Or, am I missing something?

Loxodonta on September 13, 2008 at 3:03 AM

The pic at the link says it all. Palin is totally hot there; Pink looks like a dude.

Kent is iether a spurned backer of another man for veep or a Moby.

Neither really bothers me.

The die is cast she is no more or less flawed than any of the other candidates of the last twenty years on foreign policy. I am excited to have her on the ticket, and am hopeful we will use McCain as a gateway to bypassing the remainder of the boomer generation as Presidents. Sarah Palin has more ethics at breakfast than Barry has by supper.

sven10077 on September 13, 2008 at 3:05 AM

Thursday night’s interview suggests that Palin doesn’t value knowledge much at all, that she puts faith above facts and instincts above thinking.

Your post is too long to respond to it all. I guess you are trying to make up for lack of a solid defense of the lady with volume. However I will respond to what you put first. If my mommy had showed up to publicly send me off, I would never have spoken to her again. I strongly suspect that her son was most embarrassed. I must congratulate you though as not all commenters in these parts can respond back and forth without going all juvenile. I will give you that. And around here that is a lot.

KentAllard on September 13, 2008 at 3:09 AM

Pink, now there is an intellectual giant. I’m sure all the little creatures of the forest are frightened at the prospect of a Palin Vice Presidency. Our little daughters ought to be frightened that the utter ignorance and idiocy of Pink is considered “mainstream feminism” by the “mainstream media”………

Scientology Rumor

On September 11, 2008 it was reported that Pink was turning to the Church of Scientology to deal with her prior breakup with Carey Hart. Entertainer and Scientology spokesperson Juliette Lewis is rumoured to be introducing her to the controversial religion.[44]

terryannonline on September 13, 2008 at 3:15 AM

What prepares a person to be a good president? I don’t it’s think it’s book learning. I think it’s character development. How does one assess a person’s character? I don’t think you give them a test with yes or no, multiple choice, and essay questions. Nor, will you make a good determination by reading a series of position papers they have written with the advice of a host of advisers. How does one measure character, stamina, judgment under fire, dedication, commitment, etc.?

Loxodonta on September 13, 2008 at 3:21 AM

alphie on September 13, 2008 at 3:10 AM

There are a whole lot of religious people in America, including the majority of Democrats. When we abandon the field of religious discourse—when we ignore the debate about what it means to be a good Christian or Muslim or Jew; when we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced, rather than in the positive sense of what it tells us about our obligations toward one another; when we shy away from religious venues and religious broadcasts because we assume that we will be unwelcome—others will fill the vacuum. And those who do are likely to be those with the most insular views of faith, or who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends.

BARACK OBAMA, Audacity of Hope

He wrote the last part just for you. Don’t you feel special?

Kent I wish my mother had seen me off to the Army, and I wish she had been there to help see her daughter in law off to war.

Her son is an 18 year old who will soon experience more danger and duty and responsibility in a 12 month period than Barry O’bama has worked into 47 years.

God protect her son and bring him and his fellow soldiers home safe, successful, and as serene as possible.
