Open thread: Palin vs. Gibson, round three; Update: I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary, says Palin

We’re two hours away from World News Tonight but the first excerpts are up and I figured you’d want a thread to comment. Interesting that they’re transcribing simple verbal hiccups like at the beginning here:
SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that’s what John McCain has fought. And that’s what I joined him in fighting. It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.
Their description of yesterday’s interview is interesting too, which isn’t to say it’s incorrect:
The comfort she showed when talking about a proposed pipeline that would supply the lower 48 states with natural gas from Alaska, contrasted sharply with her generally rote talking points on national security during the day’s first interview with Gibson.
While we wait, here’s a new ad from Citizens United comparing her Iraq prayer to comments made by other “Christianists” through the ages.
Update: Headlines comments imported.
Update: Palin on Hillary: “What determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way. She handled those well.” That’s a fortuitous soundbite, because it’s going to draw attention from what a friend e-mails to say sounds like “canned and evasive” answers on the other stuff per the excerpts. Click to watch.
Update: Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012. Meanwhile, how stupid do you think Biden feels for having talked up Hillary himself a few days ago? He could have played the victim here otherwise; as it is, he’s basically forced to agree with her. An

He’s very condescending.
Enoxo on September 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Can you say backfire?
In days gone by, when the only source of info was the media … people would believe this tripe. The internet has changed everything.
darwin on September 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM
She is knocking this interview out of the park. That’s why they had to lead with such a smear.
Chudi on September 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I’m still sick of this 10 minute hit piece by 20/20. I’m going to loose sleep over this crap.
flyboy777 on September 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM
How many “uh’s” and knee touches would we have heard from The Great Orator by now? He’s being tough with her, but she’s handling it quite well. She looks way more comfortable today.
henzou on September 12, 2008 at 10:21 PM
The nice thing about it is, I’ll be Americans watching this aren’t fooled by it a bit. Pretty easy to see that they’re making her jump through more hoops than they’d ever do with a man.
Tennman on September 12, 2008 at 10:21 PM
extremely condescending. say 3 things…1,2,3. Even as a med student, nobody ever asks me stuff like that. WOW.
she is hitting it out the park though.
Chudi on September 12, 2008 at 10:22 PM
The one thing that does stand out is the relentless line of repeat questioning by Gibson. Yes, it’s a bit condescending in and of itself; but even moreso when you realize that no other candidate has been hammered this hard on specifics.
Still, Palin comes out even better today than yesterday.

She is holding her own and hitting right back at him without seeming angry.
I think she is doing a great job. Much better last night, i think!
unmeritedfavor on September 12, 2008 at 10:29 PM
You know, watching it again, I think it was incredibly shrewd of her to be the first to mention the Bridge to Nowhere. It allowed her to discuss it under her terms, not Gibson’s. Very nice.

I’ve calculated the earmark dollars per spotted newt, and it’s SHOCKING, Mizz Palin…
common sensineer on September 12, 2008 at 10:30 PM
She did a terrific job explaining earmarks vs. infrastructure. I’m glad to understand what she was doing. I don’t know how media will spin in, but that was some good straight talk.
Spirit of 1776 on September 12, 2008 at 10:30 PM
she is doing way better than last night. She actually mentioned that Obama has voted against tax cuts 95 times.
Chudi on September 12, 2008 at 10:30 PM
I think we can confidently say that Palin has now been vetted more thoroughly than Obama.
This leads us to the following conclsions: 1. Obama hasn’t faced nearly the scrutiny he should have. 2. Much of the media is biased and has given Obama a pass.
….or perhaps it’s number 3. Obama has no record of merit to speak of.
dugan on September 12, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Should have said, “Let’s take a per-acre average instead, shall we?”
Tennman on September 12, 2008 at 10:32 PM
O’Reilly kept getting calls about Gibson’s elitism and talk down to Palin, but O’Reilly kept poo pooing this and felt Charlie “did a fair job!” O’Reilly is a pin head and is drinking too much kool aid himself.
wepeople on September 12, 2008 at 10:33 PM
Someone should put the Charlie Gibson interview with Obama in a video up with this one. Show them the comparison on what Charlie thinks is appropriate for a Presidential Candidate (softballs) to a Vice Presidential Candidate (total hatchet job).
Enoxo on September 12, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Obama has gotten over 900 million in earmarks for folks that donated to his campaign and are re-developers of housing projects. Hope someone asks him about that–don’t hold your breath.

From what I can see she’s not really learned on these issues…the earmarks, bridge to no where…she didnt realy have an answer for it. how can that be?
im not sure how i feel about her now….i mean gibson is asking her questions that he would never ask obama but she doesnt seem capable of really answering them well
bagadeez04 on September 12, 2008 at 10:35 PM
So, is what is now on 20/20 all of the pieces of the Gibson interview put together?
Unless mammoth thunderstorm to southwest, I never lose signal. Maybe bad dish install?
In my area, cable TV is horrible on reliability. A few seasons ago, neighbors were out for a week during a winter storm, my DirecTV kept on chugging. I’ll take a few minutes outage now and then -vs- l-o-n-g cableco outages.

I pretty much agree with that, I just wished the edits weren’t like they are. I don’t like the quiz aspect of yesterday or the trap questions, but they certainly illustrate her skill.
Spirit of 1776 on September 12, 2008 at 10:48 PM
I think it’s a fair interview, all people should be asked these kinds of questions and follow ups who run for office. It’s sad though that the bias prevents it from happening to everyone.
What I don’t think is appropriate, though, is his condescending tone and quips. I don’t think it’s appropriate to smear the interviewee in the introduction with falsehoods, and I don’t think it’s appropriate to edit the interviewee’s remarks down and cutting them of.

This is going to backfire on the lib/leftist media… in an attempt to make Palin the VP candidate look bad, she’s demonstrating that she’s also worthy of dropping the “V” in “VP” altogether.
electric-rascal on September 12, 2008 at 11:00 PM

They did good. DeeDee said Obama is flunking Palin-response, and Tori said McCain camp runs a risk of her being too scripted. Both spot on.
Spirit of 1776 on September 12, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Thank you, Tori to me sounded a bit condescending but that could just my interpretation. Dee Dee actually was more positive that I would have thought.

DeeDee Myers offered a very balanced assessment. And Tori Clarke warned Stephanopolous that Gibson will be criticized.
CanadianGuy on September 12, 2008 at 11:03 PM
the opening segement on 20/20 was a 100% hit piece. the interview itself was very good. gibson was an idiot. Palin was good. I understood what she was trying to say about earmarks. there are good ones those that are for the good of the people and evil ones those that are good for a special interest, one company etc. gibson missed the nuance of her statement. I was very pleased with her support of the 2nd amendment, her view on abortion, her answer to the book banning. Ect. I hope McCain and Her flesh out the economic plan some more. The entire problem with the economy started with three things. Out of control government spending and regulations. Lack of oversight in the housing market due to politics, inept management and regulations of the banks and mortage companies brought upon by low interest rates, and energy prices.
McCain and Palin should hit all three. Reform gov, reduce it and focus its concentration on oversight. Housing keep people in their homes, reform the process of mortages, energy produce more to lower costs. Let the people/states in the fruits of the new energy programs.
Healthcare etc should be market oriented not gov mandated.
Overall a good first interview. I hope MCain camp does not change her.

Governor Lingle made an interesting point the night of the Convention: Alaska has the same number of electoral votes as Delaware, but you could fit 250 Delewares into Alaska. I don’t think most people stop and think about the fact that those people use frozen rivers for roads. There is no way the population of that state can support infrastructure for that much area. And while they can talk about federal money, they forget how much oil we get from Alaska.

Plus earmarks under Palin has been reduced by 2/3rds saying she is for earmarks is a stupid line. however it is a simple line that the dems think they can exploit because it is a nuanced position and they think voters are dumb and will remember a was for it before I was against it. I think voters are more intelligent than either party gives us credit for.

Yeah I find it funny that no one mentions that a stump speech is done by all canidates. obama , biden and McCain rehash the same speech over and over again during their run. With one or two lines changed to give the 30 sec sound bite for the tv coverage. I find it funny that the TV isn’t carrying the 30 second soundbit from Palin instead they focus on the speech. another reason why the MSM is biased. They could but the same thing together for Obamam from speech to speech yet don’t. Wonder why?
I also agree it was a hit piece. over the top hit piece. Notice it was done before the interview too not after. So they hit piece before the interview, a quasi hit piece after the interview and the hit piece of the interview itself. Stay classy ABC.

The Sorrow and the Pity
When it comes to foreign policy, Sarah Palin doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
Gov. Palin was obviously briefed by Sen. John McCain’s advisers, and briefed fairly well. She recited what were plainly the main points of these tutorials with an assertive confidence familiar to those who engaged in high-school debate competitions.
But it was painfully obvious—from the rote nature of her responses, the repetitions of hammered-home phrases, and the non sequiturs that leapt up when she found herself led around an unfamiliar bend—that there is not a millimeter of depth undergirding those recitations, that she had never given a moment’s thought to these matters before two weeks ago.
