Open thread: Palin vs. Gibson, round three; Update: I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary, says Palin

posted at 4:42 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

We’re two hours away from World News Tonight but the first excerpts are up and I figured you’d want a thread to comment. Interesting that they’re transcribing simple verbal hiccups like at the beginning here:

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that’s what John McCain has fought. And that’s what I joined him in fighting. It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

Their description of yesterday’s interview is interesting too, which isn’t to say it’s incorrect:

The comfort she showed when talking about a proposed pipeline that would supply the lower 48 states with natural gas from Alaska, contrasted sharply with her generally rote talking points on national security during the day’s first interview with Gibson.

While we wait, here’s a new ad from Citizens United comparing her Iraq prayer to comments made by other “Christianists” through the ages.

Update: Headlines comments imported.

Update: Palin on Hillary: “What determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way. She handled those well.” That’s a fortuitous soundbite, because it’s going to draw attention from what a friend e-mails to say sounds like “canned and evasive” answers on the other stuff per the excerpts. Click to watch.

Update: Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012. Meanwhile, how stupid do you think Biden feels for having talked up Hillary himself a few days ago? He could have played the victim here otherwise; as it is, he’s basically forced to agree with her. An

Blowback

There is a time to talk the party line, and a time to ad-lib. When a trap is being set, talk the party-line, you won’t get distracted and fall into a “gotcha”. When they are in your territory, ad-lib, relax and give them your “take”. That way people see you as decisive, unwavering, consistent, with important matters, and be relaxed with the less important everyday decisions.
It’s an art, and by time the debates roll around, she will have it down pat…Biden has never gotten it, Obama is pretty good at it, McCain is excellent at it.

Well, Fox is taking Gibson to the woodshed over his changing definition of the “Bush Doctrine.”

Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012.

Let me guess, he’ll have a book out about it soon…?

Didn’t read it, but I thought his Hillary vs. Condi book was pointless, since it was never going to happen. I suppose this scenario actually could. We’ll never be rid of the Clintons, will we?

Five minutes now. From looking at the tags that we’ve been given, it looks like both of them are feeling a bit more relaxed.

My opinion is that Gibson has to give her tough questions. He’s doing that. But he has to be fair as well or this will blow up in his face.

Palin is igniting women. There’s no doubt about that, but Sarah says a lot about men as well…. and it’s all good. It’s also long overdue.

God Bless Oklahoma

John McCain is holding a two-to-one lead over Barack Obama in the Republican stronghold state of Oklahoma, according to the first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters there this election year.

McCain has 63% of the vote versus Obama’s 32%.

HOW did that happen??? I am living here (for now) and OK went completely for Hillary during primaries.

There is even one of the first Obama yard signs I’ve seen in town, a couple doors down from me.

I’m thrilled, but flummmoxed.

Right, she couldn’t answer a real foreign policy question and didn’t exactly give us any signs of exceptional insight or knowledge.

Why are people so excited about this woman? I know some people are thinking “she’s just like us”, but we already had the opportunity to see a real regular guy run the country for 8 years with less than impressive results. Why is there this need among many on this right to elevate the ordinary into something special?

This woman hasn’t delivered anything substantial to impress. Sorry, but I don’t compare her ‘hockey mom’ speech to the national addresses by a Roosevelt or Reagan or even Clinton. Is a pretty face all that matters?

When I was a kid the TV stations used to have a Scripture from Proverbs, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” I don’t know why, it just said that in a deep voice… Can you even imagine that anymore? We have lost a great deal in recent years.

petunia on September 12, 2008 at 5:31 PM

Thanks for sharing that with us, petunia. You’re absolutely correct. It’s hard to imagine regular television stations like ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and the whole alphabet soup of bolshevik media using Scripture like “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” in it’s normal broadcasting hours. That was Psalm 33:12, not Proverbs by the way. I only knew that because I looked it up. I didn’t have it memorized. Anyways, as you say, we have lost a great deal in recent years. And it’s true that “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under” – Ronald Reagan. These are very uncertain days. That is why I pray earnestly that God will give my Mormon friend eyes to see and ears to hear the truth of who God is, and to realize they are being fooled by Joseph Smith who twisted and changed the truth concerning Christ. Thank you.

apacalyps on September 12, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Now this is how you do an interview Charlie. Editing is better. But will he apologize for being an ass and misquoting Palin?

jencab on September 12, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Umm she is the VP choice.. not RUNNING for President.

Tell me what Obama has done in comparison? NADA!

Typical response. Ok, I agree with you on Obama. But how does Obama’s lack of experience make Palin more credible or a better candidate? It’s not a real answer.

Maybe the Dems will elect a good looking female governor in Arkansas or Montana and throw her on a Presidential ticket after 2 years in office. No one on the right will have any right to object, because you know that such a candidate will be fully qualified to run for the #2 job in the country.

Give me Rudy or Fred any day.

bayam on September 12, 2008 at 6:47 PM

She handles herself much better based on the transcripts in the more domestic issues. I’ll have to catch more video of it to get a better “feel” for it but thus far it seems an improvement on her performance concerning foreign policy matters. At the moment, I might give her a B or B-.

Gibson in my estimation certainly challenged her. There were a couple question overall that I felt were misplaced or used misquotes which I griped about before but overall I think he was fair. I’d go so far as to give him a B+ for his interview despite my objections to certain aspects of his questioning.

tru2tx on September 12, 2008 at 6:45 PM

He did, putting “assault” before weapons is meant to illicit an emotional response by the uninformed. But he also said, “semi-automatic” — which is a gas operated weapon.

Well, I guess I just answered my own question. The uninformed wouldn’t know the difference between semi-auto and fully auto.

On the Special Report panel on the Palin interview, Fred said she did “fine”, but Gibson not so good. Juan said she did “fine”, but didn’t show enough humility about her experience-for-the-job question. Charles explained how the question about the Bush Doctrine was Gibson’s gaffe, not Palin’s. Also mentioned Gibson’s ‘condescending sneer’, and that as long as it’s about Palin rather than McCain, Obama loses.

Then they joked about Team Obama’s reaction to Palin’s goading: “I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary”

bayam But how does Obama’s lack of experience make Palin more credible or a better candidate?

Because Hussein is the weaker candidate – we merely have to choose the best out of two possible choices. His inability to react, respond & articulate anything other than what he reads on a teleprompter is telling.

Here’s the bottom line: Hussein is a guy who didn’t earn any honors at Columbia, and was therefore grossly unqualified to get into HL. He has an average IQ at best – SP is much quicker on the uptake, and much, much better spoken.

Give he a few weeks with some cram consultants, and she’s gonna be spouting policy with the best of them. Combined with her natural people skills, this makes for a killer politician.

Hussein is going to find out this year; the rest of the Dems will find out in 2012.
