Open thread: Palin vs. Gibson, round three; Update: I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary, says Palin
posted at 4:42 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit
We’re two hours away from World News Tonight but the first excerpts are up and I figured you’d want a thread to comment. Interesting that they’re transcribing simple verbal hiccups like at the beginning here:
SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that’s what John McCain has fought. And that’s what I joined him in fighting. It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.
Their description of yesterday’s interview is interesting too, which isn’t to say it’s incorrect:
The comfort she showed when talking about a proposed pipeline that would supply the lower 48 states with natural gas from Alaska, contrasted sharply with her generally rote talking points on national security during the day’s first interview with Gibson.
While we wait, here’s a new ad from Citizens United comparing her Iraq prayer to comments made by other “Christianists” through the ages.
Update: Headlines comments imported.
Update: Palin on Hillary: “What determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way. She handled those well.” That’s a fortuitous soundbite, because it’s going to draw attention from what a friend e-mails to say sounds like “canned and evasive” answers on the other stuff per the excerpts. Click to watch.
Update: Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012. Meanwhile, how stupid do you think Biden feels for having talked up Hillary himself a few days ago? He could have played the victim here otherwise; as it is, he’s basically forced to agree with her. An

Blowback

Notice Gibson’s body language – he’s not getting the answers he wants to hear.
He tries to put words in her mouth by asking the same question over and over.
She doesn’t falter and it’s infuriating Gibson.
Kini on September 12, 2008 at 5:10 PM
sounds like he’ll be re-writing his “Hillary vs. Condi” book and just insert “Palin” for “Condi” with the Find/Replace function.

Quit bitching about Gibson, she needed this…
She had canned answers out of rot memorization for the foreign policy stuff but she’s doing well in other areas… I think her style in general is “pointy” in that she keeps it simple…

The less glib Sarah sounds, the more vulnerable before the inquisition, the more the left is toasting itself. Carry on, Charlie — burn the toast.

You know, I looked through ABC’s archive of video at that link for the interview with Charlie Gibson hammering Barack Obama about HIS earmarks, and you know, I’m having some trouble finding it……..
ctmom on September 12, 2008 at 5:14 PM
This interview was a lot better than the other one. And she was right that she has cut earmarks drastically the few years she has been in office. Also her point on attaching earmarks onto more important bills is exactly what McCain has fought. Earmarks aren’t the problem but earmark abuse. Has any media organiation investigated Obama’s earmark abuse? No, of course they haven’t.

I’ve never quite figured out how Dick “Toesucker” Morris redeemed himself and got credibility by switching to the conservative side. He’s revealed some Inside Baseball on the Clintons, but that’s no reason to have him on half teh conservative radio talk shows on the air. As pointed out above, he has a bad track record on predictions.

Matthews’s Hardball has Palin’s Democratic gubernatorial opponent on his show. He’s a nitwit and she creamed him in their 2006 debates. This is a new low for Matthews. As if this guy Knowles is a national-level politician.
The guy is repeating talking-point criticisms that got shot by midnight last night.

That was an AWESOME VIDEO! That’s what I’ve been saying ever since the day I began posting here — trying to warn everybody. God has blessed you and I, and this nation. It’s why America has prospered. People don’t realize this. Y’know, how fortunate they really are and why. Instead, in the last couple decades we’ve replaced the foundation that God is Creator, with a foundation that says, man decides truth for himself. And people don’t realize how dangerous that is. Without Him, without GOD, America is going to fall. It’s already beginning to happen. Securalism and godlessness are not a replacement for our LORD. Thanks for posting that video. What an INCREDIBLE REMINDER. Except, now I’m sad.

On the earmarks per capita issue in Alaska… Doesn’t it make sense that the country spends more there than anywhere else?
What other state produces more natural resources for our consumption than Alaska? What is the multiple of oil production, gas production, crab production, fish production, gold production?
Why should the lower 48 not pump a few billion into the infrastructure necessary to get those resources to market down here?

I see no evidence of “evasive” or “canned” answers here Allah. She gave some canned answers last night for sure but I see no evidence of that here. This incredible pessimism and fatalism is pretty annoying and it’s beyond what I would expect even from you.
I understand being realistic about what happens but it’s gone far, far beyond that at this point.

LOL (literally).
Also, through the wonders of google I found an interesting factoid about the body language expert – Jo-Ellan Dimitrius.
She was part of OJ’s Dream Team and claims to have come up with “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Also worked for Scott Peterson. Quite the resume.
I wonder who she’s voting for????
rockhead on September 12, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Palin is going after the Hillary voters big time. And she can do it honestly. I could not believe that I was rooting for Hillary Clinton of all people at the end of the Democratic Primary. It was just so totally unfair what the party and the Obama campaign did to her! I have never liked the Clintons but I do like fairness.
petunia on September 12, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Great “Christianists” video. The clip from the Palin interview is the first I had seen of it. Gibson could do a little (a lot) better hiding his contempt. He could also do better getting his facts straight.
Our VP nominee, on the other hand, did well.
I have to wonder how many on the Left realize that FDR prayed “on the air” on the occasion of the Normandy Invasion? Of course, I wonder how many of them know when the Normandy Invasion occurred?

The Citizens United ad is incredibly powerful. The historical footage made me cry and feel deeply connected to and proud of the grace & greatness of America.
Yes it’s long, but it might sway some viewers to McCain/Palin, so I hope it gets some play on TV & not just on YouTube.

gibson shamelessly took her words out of context and then rudely lied that he wasn’t. When are all Americans going to realize that this country has an enemy just as committed to it’s destruction within our borders as those living in muslim countries? When are so called “conservative” pundits and politicians going to stop buddying up to their “good freinds and collegues” among that enemy?

With all the criticism of how this interview went, she actually does come across as genuine to me. She is what she is, and that’s just how it is. Those two specific problems in the first part (not all her fault, and people may see that) were unfortunate, but beyond those, this is simply the Cuda in her native habitat.
I suppose it’s “Take it or leave it, America.”

Curious here if anyone knows if John Edwards had met with foreign heads of state before his run as VP?
This morning on Good Morning America they ran some clips from the interview followed by a “Fact Check” segment. They would show her response and then state if it was True or False. One “FALSE” was the other VP’s in the past 30 years all had met with foreign heads of state. I was wondering if their fact was only for the VPs that had gone on to be elected and excluded ones that had run and not gotten elected. Anyone???

Wow … great ad. I’d donate to have that run as often as possible.

A hallmark of intelligence is the ability to assess & respond to changing information & conditions. Watching SP quickly react & articulate while under stress indicates she is clearly smarter than the bumbling, inarticulate, affirmative action receiving, Messiah.
This will turn out to be her worst interview ever – and it ain’t half bad. While she under-performs on the quiz content, her ‘stage’ poise & presence is the stuff of naturals like FDR & RR.
She’s obviously a quick study who can think on her feet. Combine a better grasp of subject matter with her natural abilities, including likeability, and we’re looking at a force to be reckoned with.

When I was a kid the TV stations used to have a Scripture from Proverbs, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
I don’t know why, it just said that in a deep voice…
Can you even imagine that anymore? We have lost a great deal in recent years.

That’s not the last time we’re going to see her compared to great Americans of all time. Anyone want to bet that she doesn’t make the Top 10 here the next time this massive poll is taken? She will almost certainly pass Oprah as the greatest American woman. Top 5 is tough to crack, but John McCain might be 6th as President with Sarah 7th.
Top 10 greatest Americans (2005)
1 Ronald Reagan
2 Abraham Lincoln
3 Martin Luther King
4 George Washington
5 Benjamin Franklin
6 George W Bush
7 Bill Clinton
8 Elvis Presley

So…..is Gibson lying here?

Charlie was a decent morning co-host in his youth but is fast becoming the Dan Rather of ABC – pompous and arrogant (had to laugh when he asked her if accepting the VP slot was hubris – he outa’ know).
Misquoting her on the Iraq prayer and then making an issue of what he assumed was the Holy War quote is as irresponsible as it gets. He should be apologizing to her on the air since he denigrated her on the air.

Dick “The Toesucker” Morris has a political philosophy of triangulation and seeking the centrist voter, which he leveraged to great success with Bill Clinton. Because McCain genuinely is somewhat of a centrist, he’s a natural fit for a “triangulation” strategy of his own — which is why I like listening to how Morris thinks about positioning McCain. Morris’s strategy would not have worked with Bush v. Gore or Bush v. Kerry, because those were true “liberal vs. conservative” battles where you relied on base turnout more than undecided/centrist/squishy voter conversions. Morris’s commentary, then, should be fairly reliable this year — even if it was not very reliable in the past eight years. You have to have the right political strategist for the right candidate and the right campaign.
What I do not like about Morris is that his deep-seated hatred toward the Clintons continues to cloud his professional judgment. I found his “insight” into the Democratic primaries this year to be useless because of how transparently biased he was against Hillary.

I understand your anger, but the more I watch Charlie Gibson’s treatment of Governor Palin, the more I think he is doing her an enormous favor. He seems to be playing games with her, trying to trick & intimidate her. She seems not at all intimidated and to be a very genuine person. The comparison between the two could not be more dramatic or more to the advantage of the Governor.

She doesn’t stammer and stutter searching for a clever answer like the Obama does. Which is probably why Obama got the softball questions he could answer without a teleprompter.

hot-heir on September 12, 2008 at 5:52 PM
Pretty much. The project was started in 2005, before Palin took office. She supported it during her election. After it became a political problem, she did change gears and say that the state would look at cheaper alternatives.
Her motives weren’t as pure as she wants you to believe (cutting pork), but she did end up killing it. End of story.
The $223 million (which hadn’t been previously guaranteed as an earmark and put into future requests) was not requested by Palin and she said to give it to Katrina victims. Congress (yes votes by both Obama and Biden) gave it to Alaska anyways. And it was spent by Alaska.
So the truth is a little more muddled than either side would want you to believe.
But did Palin kill it? Yes
Were her motives to fight pork? No
lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 5:53 PM
I think Obama going to see Bill is a pretty good indication that he (Obama) is shaken up. Why else would you ask help from people you know you can’t trust.
On the bright side, I guess Clinton is no longer “playing the race card”….or surely Obama wouldn’t be seeking his help.

Palin has what it would take to bit@h-slap him, but it’s a one-sided deal still, at least in too many heads–Conservatives have to be nice to the press so they don’t get roasted too badly. That’s what we get for tolerating them for so long.
Tommygun on September 12, 2008 at 5:55 PM
Regarding earmarks, I think it would suit well in the future for Palin to reference the percentage of land in Alaska that is federally owned and add a comment that the development of Alaskan resources is part of her agenda to get Alaska’s dependency on fed dollars down.
But she knows that because I learned it listening to her interviews:) And she may mention it today, we’ll see.
Spirit of 1776 on September 12, 2008 at 5:56 PM
I say, put a set of antlers on him and let him lose on opening day…let’s see him dodge those “comments” out in the open.
right2bright on September 12, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Not surprising. Palin worked personally to get the pipeline approved, and probably knows all the nitty-gritty details about it from memory, and doesn’t need a script. The energy issue is her strong point, and she should hit a home run here.
But even in the foreign-policy part of the interview, she said that she had talked to the President of Georgia (the one south of Russia, not north of Florida). Who said she hadn’t talked to heads of state?
Steve Z on September 12, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Folks no one should be surprised or upset. We all knew this would happen and it will continue. Palin will have to get better at handling it in the future but she has done OK so far. She hasn’t done anything to hurt herself. The drive by media will never give the conservatives a fair shake but its not that big of a deal, we’ve beat them before and we’ll do it again, Americans know better and they see through what Charlie and his cohorts are up to.

If she were not on camera under a big spotlight with someone she may have to deal with for years to come, Gibson would be leaving Alaska carrying his broken ego in a small sack. No way she would put up with his thuggish elitism. But she seems to know how to pick her battles.
So it’s OK that we see a more vulnerable human side. Now people will move from political infatuation to a deeper respect of her abilities as an honorable woman who made herself into a killer politician.
