Open thread: Palin vs. Gibson, round three; Update: I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary, says Palin

posted at 4:42 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

We’re two hours away from World News Tonight but the first excerpts are up and I figured you’d want a thread to comment. Interesting that they’re transcribing simple verbal hiccups like at the beginning here:

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that’s what John McCain has fought. And that’s what I joined him in fighting. It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

Their description of yesterday’s interview is interesting too, which isn’t to say it’s incorrect:

The comfort she showed when talking about a proposed pipeline that would supply the lower 48 states with natural gas from Alaska, contrasted sharply with her generally rote talking points on national security during the day’s first interview with Gibson.

While we wait, here’s a new ad from Citizens United comparing her Iraq prayer to comments made by other “Christianists” through the ages.

Update: Headlines comments imported.

Update: Palin on Hillary: “What determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way. She handled those well.” That’s a fortuitous soundbite, because it’s going to draw attention from what a friend e-mails to say sounds like “canned and evasive” answers on the other stuff per the excerpts. Click to watch.

Update: Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012. Meanwhile, how stupid do you think Biden feels for having talked up Hillary himself a few days ago? He could have played the victim here otherwise; as it is, he’s basically forced to agree with her. An

Blowback

CHARLES GIBSON: But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska.

What a stupid a** Gibson is. Does that make sense to anyone?

carbon_footprint on September 12, 2008 at 4:23 PM

became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska.

Is Alaska a nation or a state? If it is a nation then Palin is a bit more than a governor, yes?

carbon_footprint on September 12, 2008 at 4:24 PM

She should have said … “I realized it wasn’t in the best interest of the country to accept it, contrary to Senator’s Obama and Biden who voted for it, and agaisnt parsing the moeny for Katrina relief”.

darwin on September 12, 2008 at 4:25 PM

Charlie is being an ass. I can tell this is going to be bad. Rich Lowry was on with Dennis Miller and he said that Charlie seems to be annoyed and disgusted with Palin. Doesn’t it show more than ever?

jencab on September 12, 2008 at 4:26 PM

I’m hoping this has been chopped too…

I would encourage you to look at the transcript from Gibson’s Obama interview. TOTAL SOFTBALLS.

the avg. voter will see that I think.

That or they’ll buy the bs that Palin is highly unqualified, ignorant Hick that the idiot McCain recklessly picked for VP

jp on September 12, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Yeah, I doubt Gibson mentioned that the two Dem candidates supported that project.

Heh – good one, Treacher!

I would encourage you to look at the transcript from Gibsons Obama interview. TOTAL SOFTBALLS.

marklmail on September 12, 2008 at 4:27 PM

And when he interviewed John Edwards after he’d been nominated for VP, he asked such hard-hitting questions as: Do those mean old republicans make you mad?

Typhoon on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Huh? She did fine. Very solid. Great to see someone finally making sense of the earmark issue. No one, not even Captain Anti-Earmark (our candidate) is suggesting that all projects ever funded by earmarks were crimes against humanity, or that it’s primarily the responsibility of state and local officials to judge whether or not moneys being provided them have been appropriated with adequate transparency. It’s a federal problem, and the attacks on Palin from Obamabiden, as channeled here by Charlie the Unicorn, have been nothing short of absurd.

CK MacLeod on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Meh, I’m glad Gibson is going hard on her… she’s doing ok… she needs to be broken in and have her weaknesses spotted out..

ninjapirate on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Most disappointing. Charlie is sounding like he’s on a mission.

petefrt on September 12, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Can you imagine the result if any journalist was 1/3 that antagonistic in an interview with the Messiah?

peski on September 12, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Looks better than yesterday, trying to trap her again, but from the excerpts, it looks like she held her own.

Palin will only get better at these interviews over time. This will be the low water mark. She’ll get through it with a couple of bumps, Charlie will look like a jackass, and the rise in the polls will continue. Charlie is acting like a tool so he can show his face at the cocktail parties and say “I really showed that rube Palin didn’t I?”.

BrianBoru on September 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

On June 4 of this year when Ole Chuckie Gibson interviewed Barack Obama he asked him how his(Obama’s) grandma felt about his win. AND what she said.

Now- THAT is a hard news interview. I’m thinkin’ that ole Chuck has lost his edge.

ExTex on September 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Charlie is looking for a hatchet job, imagine the fame that would come with saving the Messiah.

jp on September 12, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Of course Alaska needs more federal money per capita, because of the gargantuan land area it covers. 58 times more than Deleware, Joe.

jgapinoy on September 12, 2008 at 4:34 PM

I think Gov. Palin is doing fine. She’s holding her own. We knew people would be aiming for her, and she’s standing her ground.

Gibson is lost in a blizzard of words.

somebody certainly needs to do a compare and contrast video of Gibson interviews, which should embarass him professionally.

BrianBoru on September 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Precisely. This is the first interview. It was expected that she may stumble a little. She hasn’t completely struck out and created any gaffes. She’s a smart, tough woman… she’ll learn, adapt, and get even better.

For people like Obama, Biden, and even McCain… they’ve been at this for years so they really can’t adapt. And Gov. Palin is already above the curve of Biden, and speech-wise she’s above the curve of Obama. I’m loving her not stuttering and stammering with ‘uh’ and ‘eh.’

Enoxo on September 12, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Why doesn’t he ask hard-hitting questions to Obama.

Just like Hannity said, journalism is dead. Stick a fork in it. It’s done.

Oink on September 12, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Obama and Biden don’t have tough interviews like this, except on the rare occassion they go on O’Reily. Where they generally try to avoid

jp on September 12, 2008 at 4:38 PM

I think she’s doing great — she goes right back at him. He’s a putz and she’s not standing for it. To me she comes off as courageous and is doing her job, that is, supporting the McCain POV on these topics.

D2Boston on September 12, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Just read the transcript from Gibson’s interview with Obama.

While Palin gets grilled, Obama got questions like, “How do you feel?” and, “Has it sunk in yet?”

Give me a break.

nickj116 on September 12, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Gibson is being a total ass. He’s not even being friendly in the least bit or smiling even once. Even Obama joked around with O’Reilly. Yes, he does seem to be on a misssion.

CanadianGuy on September 12, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Sheesh I know this suppoed to be a tough interview but dang. Try a non-Obama camp talking point Charlie, c’mon man. We judge earmarks on a per capita basis without even mentioning Palin has drastically reduced the amount of earmarks going to Alaska? Then I could say it is up to Sarah to make that point.

Theworldisnotenough on September 12, 2008 at 4:39 PM

all that matters is how Moderates view these interviews.

jp on September 12, 2008 at 4:39 PM

I know this would never happen…but…wouldn’t be great if Palin kick Gibby in the balls just before they sat down for the interview and then ask him, Well Charlie, what’s your first question?

Old Hippie Vet on September 12, 2008 at 4:39 PM

“What doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger.”

- Sarah Palin

“Why did I just kill my career trying to destroy an obviously indestructible woman?”

- Charlie Gibson

econavenger on September 12, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Fact: she is doing great. It is just so frustrating to see a supposed fair journalist be so condescending. Sarah is like family to me and I would feel the same way toward someone treating a family member this way.
Hey Gibson, suck it!

carbon_footprint on September 12, 2008 at 4:43 PM

Hey Charlie? How much did Obama pay for your integrity?

GoodBoy on September 12, 2008 at 4:53 PM

I just read the slightly larger except on ABS… excuse me ABC.

Same as yesterday… it’s a quiz/ interrogation that has never before been seen in a political interview, much less any interview with a Democratic candidate.

This is not an interview, it’s Charlie Gibson conducting a one-sided debate of Democratic talking points that are restructured into closed ended questions.

Is he auditioning for Countdown with Charles Gibson with this garbage? Sure seems like it… his “questions” are taken word for word from Daily Kos, just like Bathtub Boy’s rants. I guess he saw the righting on the wall for Keef and Tingley and wanted to reserve his spot.

I loathe the media. Charles Gibson should be dragged out and shot like the communist traitor he is, right along with his buddies from MSNBC and CNN.

Damiano on September 12, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Gibson takes the context of Palins words as a Holy War.
Which is twisting the words.

Liberals don’t believe in god. At least our host Allah believes in something… forgive my assumption – or they believe anyone with any religious faith is an extremist.

Gibson should be reminded that there is one set of religious extremist that advocate violence and death to justify their morality.

Gibson: Senator, do you have any better idea than anyone else how this thing gets resolved?

Obama: Well, I , uh, er, – you see- I think it’s going to, uh, er, you know, get resolved by the American people. You know, we’ve had a vigorous, a vigorous, eh, contest with some great, you know, candidates.

While waiting for the 3rd installment of Palin, anybody just catch Cavuto? He was covering Obama’s gaffe saying everyone in America would pay lower taxes than in the 1990’s under Bill Clinton. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Obama supporter Cavuto had on started to say President Obama and caught herself half way through. Hilarious stuff.

2. I think she did very well in these two exchanges. She stated her points clearly and conceded nothing.

3. Question: how can the blatant misquotes re: mission from God be publicized without appearing to whine? These, “Charlie”, are unforgivable. Surrender your journalist secret decoder ring.

Speedwagon82 on September 12, 2008 at 5:06 PM

Seriously, I wish McCain’s camp would quickly create an add showing Obama’s three successive press conferences following the Russian invasion of Georgia. I saw a clip from Friday, Saturday, and Monday, and Obama was so pathetic it was scary. And the last one, in which he finally came around to the position that McCain arrived at days before, was especially anemic.
Obama looked like a fourth-grader reading a book report written by a friend of his. You could tell it was something that a committee of his 300 crack policy advisers slapped together and handed to him 30 seconds before he spoke. Add that surfing picture of Obama that Hot Air always runs, and it should confirm that Obama has no idea what he’s doing.

Oh My Goodness! I just read the transcript of Gibson’s interview with BO in June 2008. You have to read it and compare…it is unbelievable the disparity. Allah definitely needs to do a post on the blaring differences in the line of questioning.

And I thought this was funny…exactly when is he planning on doing a town hall meeting???…tick tick tock…still waiting on that one.

GIBSON: John McCain has issued an invitation to do a series of town meetings (inaudible). Going to do it?

OBAMA: Oh, we’re definitely going to be doing some town hall debates. I look forward to, you know, having more than just the three traditional debates that we’ve seen in recent presidential contests, so I’m glad that he’s interested in doing it.
