Open thread: Palin vs. Gibson, round three; Update: I think Obama regrets not picking Hillary, says Palin

We’re two hours away from World News Tonight but the first excerpts are up and I figured you’d want a thread to comment. Interesting that they’re transcribing simple verbal hiccups like at the beginning here:

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form — earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that’s what John McCain has fought. And that’s what I joined him in fighting. It’s been an embarrassment, not just Alaska’s projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

Their description of yesterday’s interview is interesting too, which isn’t to say it’s incorrect:

The comfort she showed when talking about a proposed pipeline that would supply the lower 48 states with natural gas from Alaska, contrasted sharply with her generally rote talking points on national security during the day’s first interview with Gibson.

While we wait, here’s a new ad from Citizens United comparing her Iraq prayer to comments made by other “Christianists” through the ages.

Update: Headlines comments imported.

Update: Palin on Hillary: “What determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way. She handled those well.” That’s a fortuitous soundbite, because it’s going to draw attention from what a friend e-mails to say sounds like “canned and evasive” answers on the other stuff per the excerpts. Click to watch.

Update: Dick Morris is already gaming out Hillary vs. Palin in 2012. Meanwhile, how stupid do you think Biden feels for having talked up Hillary himself a few days ago? He could have played the victim here otherwise; as it is, he’s basically forced to agree with her. An

Some one asks why do conservatives believe OBAMA and the democrats in th House and Senate will raise taxes? After all Obama has said he is going to reduce taxes for 95% of the people.

We have history, and simple math on our side.

I am sure we all remember the tax cut Bill Clinton promised for the middle class. OOOOPPPPPPPPPSSSSS. We never could afford those cuts according to Clinton.

And we do believe in democrats doing what democrats do. They will first rasise spending, incresing the size of the goverment, and welfare befitits, at the federal level and with new unfunded mandates and requirements will also force state and local spending to go up and those taxes too.

Simple math and knowing Obama,Reid and Pelosi will increase their spending to make more Americans and non citizens dependant on the federal governemnt so these people feel the need to keep them in power. I am still wating for how he will decrease total spending on medical care and keep improving the medical care of which our contry leads the world.

Obama has never run any business or had any executive experience. Has he ever even run a hawaiian shaved ice stand? (I do love shaved ice) Frankly he has no idea what he is talking about. He has no basis to even understand what his economic advisors are talking about, but knows it sounds good to the gullible.

He will push for massive increases spending which means increase in taxes. Other that simple math, history and knowing democrats do what democrats do that is why we KNOW Obama will increase taxes.

Oh yeah the Republicans lost in 2006 cause they spent money like drunken sailors….( I do appologize to the drunken sailors for the cliche)

How did that promise to stop funding the war in Iraq work out? How about the promise to eliminate earmarks? Promises from democrats in 2006. Why would we doubt Obama’s promises?

In days gone by, when the only source of info was the media … people would believe this tripe. The internet has changed everything.

darwin on September 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM

You know, AlGore must be kicking himself for having invented this Internet thing…

Kevin71 on September 13, 2008 at 8:20 AM

The thing I’m afraid of is McCain’s team smoothing and polishing her so she’s just another slick politician and wringing out all that is honest and decent and appealing about her. It reminds me of the movie Educating Rita, where the prof educates his naive student about literature until she’s erudite about the nuts and bolts of it and can no longer see the beauty and the goodness of it. I hope that doesn’t happen to Palin.

docweasel on September 13, 2008 at 8:40 AM

I dont know – is Biden smart enough to even feel stupid? Or is he smart enough to KNOW he is stupid? Inquiring minds want to know.
He aint Slow-Joe for nothing.

I don’t think Gov. Palin is naive. She may well be inexperienced in the ways of Washington politics, but she’s getting a crash course right now from the master of slime, Barry O. This turd (Obama) is so represensible, I no longer want him defeated; I want him crushed beneath a red high-heal and left in a fetal position crying for mommy-Michelle.

SKYFOX on September 13, 2008 at 9:24 AM

High-heel, that is.

SKYFOX on September 13, 2008 at 9:25 AM

How do you increase taxes on 5% of the taxpayers, to cover $1 trillion dollars in new spending. Doesn’t add up.

marklmail on September 13, 2008 at 9:52 AM

After all Obama has said he is going to reduce taxes for 95% of the people.

God help the other 5%!

Clearly that it is lost on you speaks in no way to it’s content and validity.

KentAllard on September 13, 2008 at 4:04 AM

Kent, its clear you don’t possess even the education to use properly the possessive form of “it”, much less to propound the magnificent teachings of the One. Your thoughts, however, are appreciated and will be filed in the Trash folder.

The double-standard Gibson applied to Palin, compared with the uncritical media platforms repeatedly offered to Obama, who has had zero executive experience running anything, was especially striking. ABC and Gibson focused on Palin as if she were running right now for the presidency rather than the vice presidency. He and other media pundits, by contrast, have never asked the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, if he has ever had to make a decision on anything.

Gibson’s aggressive approach appeared to take Palin by surprise: He was clearly attempting to put her on point by presenting her as having extreme religious views. This again, however, appears to be a double-standard, as Palin grew up in the Assemblies of God, one of the largest Christian denominations in America with 16 million members, and is now a member of the Wasilla Bible Church. Even now, Obama has yet to receive any comparable grilling on his 20-year attendance in the congregation of the notoriously racist Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

UPI gives a very pro Palin assessment. Read the whole thing.

Mr. Joe on September 13, 2008 at 10:25 AM

Headline: Will McCain ruin Palin?
Although I can appreciate the concern for Palin expressed by someone afraid that she might resemble Monica Goodling,* there are big differences contrasting Palin from Goodling. First of all, AGE and experience. Goodling’s entire education was from ultra-religious institutions. Not so with Palin. Goodling’s appointment occurred earlier in her career than Palin’s nomination to the GOP POTUS/VP ticket. Finally, note well the concern over management contrasts the Chief Executive differentiation between GWBush and McCain.

Therein, note well, McCain IS NOT another GWB. McCain is so much more experienced and wise than GW was running for POTUS.

I don’t see McCain foolishly entrusting anything to anyone beyond their proven ability. There is absolutely no comparison between McCain’s expertise in himself studying a phenomena from all perspectives before acting upon a determination VETTING his entourage and GWBush’s habit of giving his friends opportunities beyond their capacities (Harriet Meyers, Alberto Gonzales) as though to prove how stupid affirmative action is for the public record.

So beyond contrasting the person Palin from the person Goodling, the contextual setting contrasts McCain’s militarily honed prowess over Bush’s lame happy-go-lucky style of “try it out for size”.

I think that what Palin has is the “right stuff” and with McCain, Palin is provided the vanguards of wisdom, as witnessed by those supporting her now; John Bolton, Fred Thompson, Rudy Guillianni, Newt Gingrich, etc.

Whereas, Monica with less “worldly” and executive experience, only had Gonzales’ direction motivating her personal inclinations that were far less tolerant than Palin’s.

No real comparison.

*Goodling from Wikipedia:

According to David Ayres, senior chief of staff to Attorney General John Ashcroft, “She was the embodiment of a hardworking young conservative who believed strongly in the president and his mission”.[5] But according to Bud Cummins, one of the fired prosecutors and an Arkansas Republican, “She was inexperienced, way too naïve and a little overzealous”. Goodling stated that she “crossed the line” and broke civil service rules about hiring, and improperly weighed political factors in considering applicants for career positions at the Department of Justice.

btw, what’s the relation between Bill Ayers and David Ayers if any?

ManlyRash on September 13, 2008 at 12:31 PM

I just registered my complaint to ABC, demanded the full interview be aires and asked about the extreme differences in the questions asked Obama.

I expect no response except a tiresome form letter, but if people keep pointing out the differences maybe somebody will ask Obama something substantive.

While the Palin interview was tough, in its unedited form it was the sort of questions candidates should answer as opposed to the vague pufferies masquerading as questions that were lobbed at Obama.

Kudos to Palin for answering the questions without trying to grab Gibson’s knee the way Obama did with O’Reilly.

Is Obama hot for O’Reilly or was it just a “stop this, protect me” thing?

clnurnberg on September 13, 2008 at 12:42 PM

I think the treatment that Palin is getting from the media and the Nutroots is absolutely wonderful. It does two great things for our side. First, it makes many Americans love her because of the unfair and despicable treatment she is receiving. Second, it highlights in neon yellow the kid glove treatment that Obama has received from the media.

And as an extra added and tasty bonus, the Marxist style feminism practiced by the likes of Gloria Steinem is being ripped to shreds.

I doubt that it exists. If it does exist it could be the Republicans’ October Surprise.

ManlyRash on September 13, 2008 at 1:43 PM

This is Newt’s perspective on this subject:

Mr. Gingrich also said that Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, committed “the biggest political mistake of his career” by choosing not to pick Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate, and that Mrs. Palin’s selection by Republican nominee Sen. John McCain had stolen the Democrat’s thunder.

“Had he shown that he was strong enough to have both Bill [Clinton] and Hillary with him without being intimidated … he would have had a ticket that would have been hard for us to beat. But he didn’t. He flinched,” Mr. Gingrich said.

ABC was biased, but not so much to obscure the fact that Sarah Palin needs to spend a week going over McCain’s briefing books. Also, she needs to stop rehearsing lines and start going off-the-cuff.

Whoever is telling Palin to rehearse lines and memorize instead of to talk normally is killing the McCain/Palin campaign and needs to be fired right the hell now. The poll numbers are slipping to fast to allow this to continue.

Sarah Palin should add a new line to her campaign that basically says:
“Joe Biden thinks Obama made the wrong choice for VP, but Im here to let you know that John McCain made the right choice”

Hahahaha! Hume just led into his segement about the Palin interview with his “old friend, Charlie Gibson”… Wonder if that is classic Hume sarcasim? I think so and I love it.

MarkABinVA on September 13, 2008 at 9:57 PM

D’OH!

Over at http://www.upi.com/ there was a story using Gibson’s edited and out of context quotes from Palin’s prayer for the troops titled “Palin Says Iraq Is God’s War” or something like that.

I set up an account so I could comment and informed them that she’d PRAYED that is was part of God’s plan, not SAID it was. Then I told them what I thought about the “100 Years Of Journalistic Excellence” line on their masthead.

I checked back today to see if they corrected it and it’s gone. ERASED. What media bias?

The MSM/DNC Cabal is on a full court press to stop Palin in her tracks. Good luck with that fellas…

Woody on September 13, 2008 at 11:06 PM

CORRECTION: It’s not erased. I was Google-ing to see if I could find a link and here it is:

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/09/03/Palin_says_Iraq_war_is_task_from_God/UPI-66481220457877/

If Palin remains as popular as she is now I think the October surprise will be Biden dropping out & Hillary coming in either at the top of the ticket or as number two.
