Obama to “go personal” against McCain, Palin; Update: Barack “Isotoner” Obama; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll added

According to NBC and the New York Times, Democrats have put enormous pressure on Barack Obama to start hitting John McCain in a more personal manner and to get his momentum back in this race. Team Obama says that the “bed-wetting” will not knock them off their game plan, but according to Andrea Mitchell, that may change. Sources in the campaign tell her that they will start getting personal with John McCain and perhaps Sarah Palin, starting today:

Senator Barack Obama will intensify his assault against Senator John McCain, with new television advertisements and more forceful attacks by the candidate and surrogates beginning Friday morning, as he confronts an invigorated Republican presidential ticket and increasing nervousness in the Democratic ranks.

Mr. McCain’s choice of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate and the resulting jolt of energy among Republican voters appear to have caught Mr. Obama and his advisers by surprise and added to concern among some Democrats that the Obama campaign was not pushing back hard enough against Republican attacks in a critical phase of the race.

Some Democrats said Mr. Obama needed to move to seize control of the campaign and to block Mr. McCain from snatching away from him the message that he was the best hope to bring change to Washington.

After back-to-back attack ads by Mr. McCain, including one that misleadingly accused Mr. Obama of endorsing sex education for kindergarten students, the Obama campaign is planning to sharpen attacks on Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin in an effort to counter Mr. McCain’s attempt to present himself as the candidate of change with his choice of Ms. Palin.

If nothing else, this should be entertaining. How much lower and personal can one go than to accuse opponents of being racists? Obama’s already trotted that out four times this summer, the last time just a week ago.

How does one go “personal” against John McCain in a way that makes any sense? My guess is that Team Obama will go back to the “temperament” meme, arguing that McCain is too much of a hothead to have his finger on the button. Unfortunately, Obama has his own “temperament” history, one which may negate this line of attack altogether or at least dilute it to the point of ineffectiveness. Further, McCain’s been on the national stage for decades and has never had a moment where people saw him as irrational, and even the targets of his anger say that it always had a tactical purpose.

Democrats have tried going “personal” against Palin already, with disastrous results.  Every kind of smear has been aimed at her, from being nothing more than a pregnant pants-suit to a slut to a bad mother, and so on.  Where has that taken the Obama campaign?  On an unprecedented slide in polling that they now have less than eight weeks to stop, let alone reverse.

Obama started this campaign on a promise of New Politics.  He betrayed that by breaking his pledge on public financing, and almost immediately afterwards began weeping about the racist Republicans and the John McCain campaign.  The farther Obama walks away from his New Politics pledge, the weaker he becomes.  Because without that, voters have no reason at all to vote for a man with no experience at all.

Obama’s listening to the same people who did such a great job opposing George Bush in the last two elections.  He should have stuck with the Clintons.

Update: Jake Tapper ridicules this new theme, and says he’s heard it before, and before, and before:

But just so you know — this is by my count the 4th time Obama’s campaign has officially or unofficially made such a declaration that Obama will “take off the gloves” and fight back.

That’s a lot of pairs of gloves.

The Isotoner campaign, one might say.

How is this different?  Tapper notes with a heavy dollop of sarcasm that the Obama campaign will shift to a new, unveiled attack on McCain as … being the same as George Bush.

the resulting jolt of energy among Republican voters appear to have caught Mr. Obama and his advisers by surprise

And in related news, Mr. B. O. and his hatchet-men caught by surprise that people, that even Barbara Boxer (D-CA) are disgusted that he could not vote to save children born alive.

Then again B.O and his hatchet-men are caught by surprise that people can see through this M/T suit!

I see many of them going completely postal if McCain continues to do well.

Getting “personal” is the ultimate rope a dope in this campaign cycle. And this Dope is about to get knocked into the ropes if he tries to impugn McCain or Sarah on a personal level.
He’s off-message… well, not like he has one anyway. How many ways can someone be NOT like Bush? That has to be the lamest campaign theme of all time.

For all those who were asking how to HELP McCAIN, I got this in an email from the campaign today:

Can you invest 10 days of your life to make history?

The John McCain 2008 Presidential Campaign is looking for volunteers who are willing to spend the final ten days of the campaign helping in a nearby state. Deployed volunteers will take an active role and participate in a number of Get-Out-The-Vote activities. These activities will include making phone calls, going door to door, recruiting volunteers, and assisting with additional campaign activities and operations.

These ten days will be unpaid and participants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation and housing. The campaign is unable to reimburse any expenses.

Please consider this opportunity to adhere to John McCain’s call to serve a cause greater than self! On the evening of November 4th you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you did everything possible to secure the future of our nation.

Let us know that you are ready and able to serve from October 25th through November 4th by replying to this email with your resume and cover letter. Please send both to Volunteer5@JohnMcCain.com.

Thank you!

Kameron Wilson, Deputy Director of Volunteers

“Heh” to you, and good to see your name again, Pablo. Been a while. Several others noted this when AP was posting on it the other day – it has not been debunked…

Too bad Obama isn’t already President, the oceans have already risen 6′ in Galveston, he could’ve just charmed them down.

kirkill on September 12, 2008 at 3:43 PM

That computer comment is really dumb. How many times in one year do you really think the President of the U.S. actually uses a computer on his own with all the staff he has !!!

golfer39 on September 12, 2008 at 3:43 PM

So nice to see Obama call a truce for September 11, and then the VERY NEXT DAY, his campaign vowing to take it to a new low in mudslinging politics. Well played.

timmo on September 12, 2008 at 4:10 PM

NOW he’s gonna get personal? Gimme a small break already!

ErinF on September 12, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Can someone explain toe how he can possibly go “more personal” than they already have?

If you don’t believe that he hasn’t known and condoned the verbal attacks that have been used to this point by the lunatic fringe, I have a bridge to sell you.

Noelie on September 12, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Those dopes honestly think they’re tanking in the poles because…they’re not making this personal and attacking McCain/Palin’s personal lives?

So much for Hope and Change.

From here on out, looks like Obama’s going to be Snipe and Smear.

Exit question: Will Democratice poll numbers across the board actually create a sonic boom as the plummet towards the earth?

Biden just blew through Chicago promising the smart pants here that he was going to take Sarah down in the debates. This is after he’s been highlighted all over the Internet asking the man in the wheel chair to stand up and take a bow.

The ship is listing and the freaking bus has left the station, my friends.

JAW on September 12, 2008 at 6:52 PM

I also hope that the security details are being vigilant both for McCain and for Sarah Palin. I’m sensing a serious turn negative and the loons will be turned loose in the streets. JMO.

Good luck with trying to paint a Navy carrier attack bomber pilot as technologically deficient. Maybe one of those geniuses on the Obama staff might have a look at the cockpit sometime.

Now tell me that McCain could not figure out how to send email in about 3 minutes.

Maybe the next ad should make fun of McCain because he can’t play basketball.

iconoclast on September 12, 2008 at 7:51 PM

Dear Barack:

I think your great idea to go negative on McCain/Palin is a stroke of genius. It shows your leadership. Your “lipstick on a Pig” joke was hilarious and probably did you a world of good in the polls. Why not have Michelle stick with that theme (maybe call Sarah a Honkey pig in lipstick) while you concentrate on McCain. Your e-mail ad was brilliant. Buy more air time for it in Florida. Remind the voters that not only can you e-mail, but you did an unforgetable job of announcing your VP by text message at 3 am.
And get Biden out there too. We want to see more of him. Maybe have him address some disabled vets.

Send Father Pfleger after the Catholic vote.

You’ve got a great team that represents you well. Use them. Be more negative. I love watching it.

I have more ideas too if you want to discuss them.

And along comes Harry Reid via The Hill’s article Reid criticizes McCain’s temper

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had some of his harshest words yet for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Friday, suggesting his colleague lacks the temperament and judgment to be president.

Reid used time on the Senate floor to talk presidential politics,

[...]

“Our dangerous world calls for leaders with sound judgment, not those with a temperament prone to recklessness,” Reid said. “Our country deserves more than token shifts and lip service to change. We need to take decisive action to reverse eight years of foreign policy mistakes. That’s exactly what Sen. Obama and Senate Democrats offer.”

[...]

“The Obama campaign revealed their desperation by using the ‘speed and ferocity’ of Harry Reid to launch baseless personal attacks on a largely deserted Senate floor,” said Bill Riggs, an RNC spokesman.

[...]
Reid did did not appear to violate a Senate rule against personal attacks on other senators, and no other senators lodged any immediate complaint. The Senate was largely deserted Friday — there were no scheduled votes, and most members were back in their states.

9/13/08 Nedra Pickler, AP

Obama and running mate Joe Biden had planned to campaign together at the rally in Manchester’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. But the campaign decided to scale back the event as the storm battered the Gulf Coast and canceled Biden’s appearance.

Obama asked people to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers and be ready to help volunteer or donate to relief efforts.

1. 6am Central Time I Googled and Yahoo! searched for Ike update. At the top of the results was an Obama ad that read, “Donate to the Obama campaign. Republicans failed to respond for Katrina.” So THAT’S donating to the relief efforts for Ike, giving the money to Obama’s campaign.

2. The DNC canceled Biden’s appearance today. How fortunate for the Democrats to have Ike to blame for pulling Biden off the stage with their cane around his neck for begging Hillary to PLEASE take his place on the ticket. Pretty please with sugar on top?!

The #1 reason for McCain/Palin to win (besides safety, country & Military etc )..is the dream the rest of us hold on to,..the dream of my father and my mother the dream of millions of Americas! That now the liberals will at long last after years of “threats” ,..LEAVE AMERICA!..: o )

Isn’t there some point beyond which new ads have no effect because prior ads had no effect?
