Obama to “go personal” against McCain, Palin; Update: Barack “Isotoner” Obama; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll added

According to NBC and the New York Times, Democrats have put enormous pressure on Barack Obama to start hitting John McCain in a more personal manner and to get his momentum back in this race. Team Obama says that the “bed-wetting” will not knock them off their game plan, but according to Andrea Mitchell, that may change. Sources in the campaign tell her that they will start getting personal with John McCain and perhaps Sarah Palin, starting today:

Senator Barack Obama will intensify his assault against Senator John McCain, with new television advertisements and more forceful attacks by the candidate and surrogates beginning Friday morning, as he confronts an invigorated Republican presidential ticket and increasing nervousness in the Democratic ranks.

Mr. McCain’s choice of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate and the resulting jolt of energy among Republican voters appear to have caught Mr. Obama and his advisers by surprise and added to concern among some Democrats that the Obama campaign was not pushing back hard enough against Republican attacks in a critical phase of the race.

Some Democrats said Mr. Obama needed to move to seize control of the campaign and to block Mr. McCain from snatching away from him the message that he was the best hope to bring change to Washington.

After back-to-back attack ads by Mr. McCain, including one that misleadingly accused Mr. Obama of endorsing sex education for kindergarten students, the Obama campaign is planning to sharpen attacks on Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin in an effort to counter Mr. McCain’s attempt to present himself as the candidate of change with his choice of Ms. Palin.

If nothing else, this should be entertaining. How much lower and personal can one go than to accuse opponents of being racists? Obama’s already trotted that out four times this summer, the last time just a week ago.

How does one go “personal” against John McCain in a way that makes any sense? My guess is that Team Obama will go back to the “temperament” meme, arguing that McCain is too much of a hothead to have his finger on the button. Unfortunately, Obama has his own “temperament” history, one which may negate this line of attack altogether or at least dilute it to the point of ineffectiveness. Further, McCain’s been on the national stage for decades and has never had a moment where people saw him as irrational, and even the targets of his anger say that it always had a tactical purpose.

Democrats have tried going “personal” against Palin already, with disastrous results.  Every kind of smear has been aimed at her, from being nothing more than a pregnant pants-suit to a slut to a bad mother, and so on.  Where has that taken the Obama campaign?  On an unprecedented slide in polling that they now have less than eight weeks to stop, let alone reverse.

Obama started this campaign on a promise of New Politics.  He betrayed that by breaking his pledge on public financing, and almost immediately afterwards began weeping about the racist Republicans and the John McCain campaign.  The farther Obama walks away from his New Politics pledge, the weaker he becomes.  Because without that, voters have no reason at all to vote for a man with no experience at all.

Obama’s listening to the same people who did such a great job opposing George Bush in the last two elections.  He should have stuck with the Clintons.

Update: Jake Tapper ridicules this new theme, and says he’s heard it before, and before, and before:

But just so you know — this is by my count the 4th time Obama’s campaign has officially or unofficially made such a declaration that Obama will “take off the gloves” and fight back.

That’s a lot of pairs of gloves.

The Isotoner campaign, one might say.

How is this different?  Tapper notes with a heavy dollop of sarcasm that the Obama campaign will shift to a new, unveiled attack on McCain as … being the same as George Bush.

I’ll say one thing for him, he’s been exceedingly tough on both campaigns.

The commercial just came out, it’s called “Still” and is pretty douchey. Basically it’s a hit at McCain being old.

Any truth to the rumor about UK authorities having banned Andrea Mitchell from traveling to London. Something about worries that her face might stop Big Ben.

The issue is one of understanding how the modern world operates and communicates.

BigD on September 12, 2008 at 9:32 AM

Just because McCain doesn’t use a computer himself doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how the modern world operates and communicates. I’m sure there are lots of computers in his Senate office, as well as his campaign headquarters. He knows what e-mail is and how it’s used, he just doesn’t sit at a keyboard and type and send the e-mails himself. I don’t see that as a big deal.

AZCoyote on September 12, 2008 at 9:53 AM

I’m not familiar with that. Factcheck dot org claims that the assertion is false. Do you have any information to suggest otherwise?

wise_man on September 12, 2008 at 9:33 AM

wise_man, the bill in question is here. Lines 13 -17 state this:

Each class or course in comprehensive sex education offered in any of grades K 6 through 12 shall include instruction on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread of HIV AIDS.

Factcheck got this one wrong. I only hope that they’re teaching the kindergarteners to prevent STD transmission through abstinence and not condoms.

I seem to be in the minority on this point.

Well, I didn’t say I though it was a big issue, just a legitimate one. You would think that if he could fly a plane he would want to know how to use a computer.

BigD on September 12, 2008 at 10:04 AM

It would be much better if Barack released his transcripts from Columbia, let people see the Chicago Annenberg Challenge records, explain his relationship to William Ayers, why he has changed positions on just about every issue since the primary started etc.
Sarah got more foriegn policy questions thrown at her in a minute than Obama has received in the 2 years he has run for POTUS.

I see wise man’s link, but I want to make sure that I’m reading the correct legislation.

I glanced over something in a hurry yesterday, and I came away agreeing with the McCain campaign. The general rule under the bill seemed to provided for across-the-board sex education for K-12 graders. The only qualification seemed to be an age-appropriate limitation. In other words, the K-5 graders were tossed into the bill without segregating them into a separate category of students who would receive only improper touching instruction. As I read the bill, the entire laundry list of sexual matters could be discussed with even the younger kids as long as it was done in an age appropriate manner. That’s crap. I realize that by third grade most middle-class boys have sneaked a peek at Playboy, but K-5 graders shouldn’t be schooled in masturbation and the like because there no age appropriate way to do it.

Again, I didn’t have time to study the bill, but I’m also not sure that I was looking at what I should be looking at. But what I read seemed a sloppily drafted piece of legislation, which, regardless of how you feel about it what it introduces to 6-12 graders, the material should not be up for discussion in schools with K-5 graders.

sven10077 on September 12, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I get the feeling that Obama and Axelrod just don’t GET IT.

They were running a campaign that is based entirely on a very compelling narrative. That narrative wanted to completely ignore the past–and to do that you need unblinking dedication to making the present match the narrative.

The promise was for post-partisan, respectful governance AND campaigning. It promised to bring the little man back to government and to take down the special interests. Partnered with great eloquence…brilliance.

I get the feeling the Obama campaign lost the strategic advantage for tactical advantages (for non-military types…lost the forest for the trees).

Dump public financing? Sure you could get over half a billion, but why do you need it when your campaign can run on a shoestring of you going out and talking about hope with the people? Let your narrative be a money multiplier. Oh, and don’t take money from spouses of registered lobbyists while decrying the profession…hair-splitting is unseemly.

Go negative? Sure it can embarrass McCain and possibly make the race card stick. But why lose the magnanimous and post-partisan image? People are temporarily swayed by negative ads, but a monolithic and issue-based positive campaign doesn’t leave too many weaknesses. And indulging in less than dignified double-entendres is particularly counter to the proposed theme. Fun though they may be.

Tack to the center with breakneck speed? It might be forgotten after six weeks, but New Politics requires a certain clarity of vision…OR the politically ballsy ability to admit that one was wrong.

Obama’s campaign forgot they were on a high-risk, high-reward path I’d almost call a long con. The narrative is everything, if you are going to fight anything…fight people within your campaign who would alter the narrative.

Someone in the campaign suggests taking money from SEIU in ways you’ve decried? Don’t just fire them, hold a press conference. Emphasize just how many skulls you are cracking together WITHIN YOUR CAMPAIGN.

Someone in your party starts doing things you say you are against? Don’t say you cannot control them, very loudly call them out on it. Show the world you will cut out the corruption wherever you find it.

Obama is using a strategy that requires single-minded devotion and a willingness to expose many flanks to attack. Sure his record can be attacked, but can you question someone on a crusade WHILE ALSO CAMPAIGNING? Logic says yes, PR theory says no.

I’ve had enough of Obama’s bush league politics…all he had to do was cement the conventional wisdom that he was a reformer with some highly publicized choices that make no tactical sense (passing on his insane fundraising out of loyalty for the public financing he fought for) but strategically reinforce his message.

His message was a force multiplier. It’s gone. His campaign is fairly toothless. Let’s hope he can’t gum McCain to death.

tldr, I know. Apologies, just had to get that out.

Ad idea to combat the same-old, same-old attack on McCain’s age:

“Real leadership skills are timeless.” (Followed by loads of still photos through the years of McCain engaging with world leaders, military officers, troops, townhall engagements, etc.)

“Some appeals are just passing fads.” (Clips of The One dancing with DeGeneres and a screen shot of the Temple to the Dem Nominee)

onlineanalyst on September 12, 2008 at 10:18 AM

“Today is the first day of the rest of the campaign,” Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says in a campaign strategy memo. “We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain’s attacks and we will take the fight to him, but we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people.”

The newest ad showcasing their hard line includes unflattering footage of McCain at a hearing in the early ’80s, wearing giant glasses and an out-of-style suit, interspersed with shots of a disco ball, a clunky phone, an outdated computer and a Rubix Cube.

“1982, John McCain goes to Washington,” an announcer says over chirpy elevator music. “Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn’t.

“He admits he still doesn’t know how to use a computer, can’t send an e-mail, still doesn’t understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class,” it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. “After one president who was out of touch, we just can’t afford more of the same.”

In Michigan, McCain needs to tie that Kwame Kilpatrick loser around Obama’s neck. Maybe it will be a touchy matter, but that low-life embarrassed blacks up there and made taxpayers pay $8.4 million to settle with some cops whom Kilpatrick fired after they got the goods on Kilpatrick’s affair with his chief of staff. Kilpatrick recently agreed to a plea involving 120 days in jail and a $1 million fine. Talk about messing around on the taxpayers’ dime.

I know that there are pictures of some big-grin hugs between Obama and Kilpatrick. Time for some ads in Michigan.

All that Obama promise of hope and change, and an end to old politics.

And now, Obama “gets mean” for the umpteenth time this election season. Does Obama truly think that Americans are that stupid? He’s been shown to be just another machine politician, and if he goes back to being just another machine politician with personal attacks against McCain?

Well, I, for one, on 5 November, will send a thank you card to the DNC. The DNC and Obama strategy this election season is going to get McCain elected by a wide margin, along with a good number of GOP congressional candidates. Thank you, Obama. Thank you, Howard Dean. Arrogance meet experience.

I agree. Schmidt is keeping his powder dry. He is letting them expend their ammunition as they fire useless fusillades at too great a distance from election day. By October, much of their money and their ammunition will have been wasted. I suspect that Schmidt will give the order to open fire at that time. And the results will be devastating.

So now the O-Biden campaign can add “DISRESPECTING A WAR HERO’S PHYSICAL INJURIES” to their list of “disses”. It would be like making fun of former Senator Bob Dole for not being able to shake hands. Getting McCain to admit or use this might be impossible…

Palin.

I still get shocked when I read statements like this in a supposedly objective news piece (yeah yeah I know it’s all pretense, but still). That is not a statement of fact. It is an arguable point (that the Obama campaign could make) but the phrase “that the Obama campaign claimed misleadingly …” needs to be inserted for it to be fair. Since when does the Obama campaign define truth?

Obama has no gravitas. If he shouts louder he only becomes as shrill as Michelle O. ‘used to be’. Remember the wolf, he loses all his hairs, but always keeps one (grandma said).

Axelrod whined yesterday “They report 9000 at a McCain/Palin ralley, but we had 10,000 at the same place a few days ago, and they didn’t report”, or something to this effect. His math is wanting. It’s all compared to what, dummy.

Obama yesterday “Listen to this man, he knows a thing or two about politics”, about Bill Clinton. Right, Bill sure knew what to do with Hillary this year.

Bill’s celebrating, with a cigar, behind closed doors, and Hillary too.

Obama will shoult into the woods and nothing will come out. That baloon was deflated and it’s limp now. Just floating.

BuckeyeSam on September 12, 2008 at 10:12 AM

What you’re looking at is is fairly common and it’s what makes a lot of federal legislation impenetrable. The struckthrough portions are the old language of the statute and the new language is inserted. So, if you vote for the bill, you’re voting to strike the struckthrough language and approve the rest as the law of the land. Federal bills mostly just refer to existing law and just say “Remove this line and replace it with this one…” Much legislation isn’t exactly new law so much as it is revision of the old law. Note the URL of the link I posted. That is the full text of SB0099, posted on the Illinois general Assembly website. That is the bill the McCain ad refers to.

Pablo on September 12, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Well, so much for Hope (TM), Change (TM), and the new politics. The king is dead — long live the king!

We do need to see that McCain can indeed handle computers — being able to compute using a separate machine from one’s mind is essential to the Presidency. Maybe Obama should challenge McCain to a texting race on one of those teensy keyboards, or an iTunes downloading contest (first contestant to download and play 25 songs that they actually like wins).

Kjeil on September 12, 2008 at 11:34 AM

arguing that McCain is too much of a hothead to have his finger on the button. – Ed

As if the President can just wake up one day at 3 a.m. and hit a button that launches nuclear war. Oops! I meant to hit the snooze.

kirkill on September 12, 2008 at 11:36 AM

When BDS is all you have; you won’t get very far.

All Obama has is BDS.

lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 11:37 AM

OMG! McCain is computer illiterate. Scary, huh? Obama should sue his campaign team. Incompetence.

Sue on September 12, 2008 at 9:51 AM

McCain should responds to this charge head on:

Damiano’s McCain speech would read:

“My friends, my opponent has rightfully called me out on a weakness I have. Yes, I am not well versed in computers or the internet. I guess that means that I’ll have to resort to getting my information from national intelligence experts instead of the Daily Kos and Huffington Post. On the up side, I suppose that means I will have to base my decision on the best information available in the free world and be able to quote my opponent accurately.”

Damiano on September 12, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Bill’s celebrating, with a cigar, behind closed doors, and Hillary too.

thats for sure…bill and hill will do everything possible to see that he loses. while not leaving any ‘fingerprints’ of course…

right4life on September 12, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Bill’s celebrating, with a cigar, behind closed doors, and Hillary too.

A cigar and Hillary? Ummm…

Hiya, Entelechy!

Pablo on September 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM

If you have ears that look like pigs’ ears, does this make you a pig? Just saying, since I don’t know anyone in the Presidential race with huge pig ears.

tarpon on September 12, 2008 at 10:41 AM

No, but I’ve seen one with huge donkey ears. And acts like a donkey’s ass when asked any hard questions.

kirkill on September 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM

I know that there are pictures of some big-grin hugs between Obama and Kilpatrick. Time for some ads in Michigan.

BuckeyeSam on September 12, 2008 at 10:31 AM

There’s some video of Obama hugging Kwame as he introduces him at some function, and calling him a “great mayor.”

Some Republican group (I forget who it was — may have been a state party) used it in an anti-O ad a month or so ago.

AZCoyote on September 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM

Question:………”Why Wasn’t Michelle Obama at the 9/11 Ceremony?”

After attacking Palin’s bona fides as a mother, they kept the little lady at home with the kids.

Yes, the new McCain ad is stupid. Keep it up, Dems, go for the landslide (for McCain)!

PattyJ on September 12, 2008 at 11:42 AM

The hardest thing the McCain people have to do now is figure out which of the many adds they have made and not used yet they want to use first.

Old Hippie Vet on September 12, 2008 at 11:44 AM

OJ took off his gloves and it worked for him, so maybe it will work for The One? ;-)

I truly hope the Dems pile on the personal attacks. Every time they do they anger the right and alienate the left. I consider this free motivational marketing for the Conservative base. Let the left attack all they want, let them spend the money to help encourage the Right to vote.

Bring it, baby.

cannonball on September 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM

The only reason Obama knows how to use a computer is because he used one to type his two memoirs. Both about himself. While suffering in poverty. So impoverished in fact, that Michelle and the One had to go to Fiji to escape said poverty.

kirkill on September 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM

If the isotoner’s don’t fit, you must write the obit?

Oh I dunno. There’s a good rhyme there someplace :P

lorien1973 on September 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Hugh Hewitt has a great article up…

Keemo on September 12, 2008 at 11:24 AM

It is very good, and includes yet another wonderful Down’s Syndrome story.

Loxodonta on September 12, 2008 at 11:52 AM

So tell me MSM, how the hell does going on an personal attack offensive help “reclaim the change message?”

cannonball on September 12, 2008 at 11:55 AM

His campaign has insulted women, alienated the old-school rank & file dems by going all Michael Moore, slammed small towns and now uses age as a put-down?! 72 is not old anymore to say the least.

What next geniuses? Seriously, he’s running out of groups to insult.

tehd on September 12, 2008 at 12:00 PM

A friend said “It’s fun watching the Mile High Messiah implode in a cloud of inconsequential dust”, and

“Well, we now have a month and a half until election day, Russia grows more dangerous daily, North Korea is doing God-knows-what, Iran is pushing full speed for nukes, the US Navy has ships in the Black Sea, Syria is hosting the Russian Navy and Venezuela is hosting Russian bombers. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?”

Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Dang, I meant to say, to my comment above, and Obama shouts, louder and louder “Enough”.

Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 12:02 PM

The Old Fish [Victor Davis Hanson]

“Also, his recent attacks against an ‘old fish’ and ‘lipsticked pig’, and those of his supporters, come off as ageist and sexist and that can’t go well with a lot of voters. Yes, he is registering new voters, but since 2004, millions, to match them, have gone into their sixties and are “evolving,” as they say, in their views. Some may well identify with a feisty older McCain in the way middle America does with Palin. And when you add up the daily outbursts of disdain and condescension from Hollywood celebs, unhinged pundits, Biden’s daily fare, and the sneers of lower-tier Democratic politicians, the image is one of furor and panic, not calm governance. Another 2 weeks of this and I think millions are going to keep quiet, say they are “undecided,” but privately conclude that they have had enough of all this bias, and simply won’t vote for any more of Obamania.”
http://corner.nationalreview.com/

In the next few weeks we can expect the Dems to become truly bizarre. Barry’s not holding up well because he’s never had to fight a long, tough fight. His ambition is based on personal gain and not centered on a higher, unselfish purpose.

We’ll probably witnessing political hari kiri performed by the Dems (yet again). One has to wonder why they keep doing this to themselves, however in this instance I’m definitely “pro-choice”.

Cody1991 on September 12, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Senator McCain’s WAR INJURIES PREVENT HIM FROM BEING ABLE TO COMFORTABLY POSITION HIS HANDS ON A KEYBOARD for any length of time. His aides even have to comb his hair for him. Not exactly a motivating factor for using a computer.

NightmareOnKStreet on September 12, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Rising above the smears, once again.

Steve McCullough on September 12, 2008 at 12:12 PM

After back-to-back attack ads by Mr. McCain, including one that misleadingly accused Mr. Obama of endorsing sex education for kindergarten students,

I was listening to Rush yesterday about this. According to him, he had a copy of the bill. It included sex education for students K-12. Was Rush lying? If not, then is it misleading?

its_a_trap on September 12, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Patrick Ruffini does a nice job of explaining why Camp Obama has been acting as it has. And as you note, it started with rejeceting public financing. And if you look at the graph of the RCP average, focusing on the gap between BO and JM, you will find that it is basically where BO started losing this campaign.

Karl on September 12, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Obama may be getting ready to go personal but Limbaugh just did in an hilarious Shanklin parody! Obamessiah drug before Pontius Palin, Biden telling Lazarus to stand up, starring John McCain as Methuselah Hillary as a demon possessed woman. I think he got everybody with this one. I’m still laughing.

I just heard it – hilarious!!

Bill’s celebrating, with a cigar, behind closed doors, and Hillary too.

I think I just threw up in my mouth.

NoFanofLibs on September 12, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Jake Tapper

Another part of today’s claim is that the Democrat is going to aggressively claim the “change” mantle.

America wants change, but not the Obama kind.

Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Why wasn’t Michelle Obama at Ground Zero?

ignatzk on September 12, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Its on – an Obama Surrogate is on FNC now – trotting out the “Houses/out of touch” line.

HawaiiLwyr on September 12, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Haven’t seen the ad from Obama yet, but when I heard he was going after McCain about not knowing how to send an email, all I could think about was “what the hell does that have to do with keeping our nation safe?”. McCain should have the same ad and tell the people that Obama has no military experience and is trying to be Commander-in-chief.
