New animal rights ad: Hey, Palin’s a savage who enjoys seeing animals suffer

Fun and games from the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, casting our heroine in the role of a cartoon sadist. Consider it a complement to WaPo hyperventilation last week about why she increased spending for teen moms by “only” $3.9 million instead of $5 million: An expansion in funding doesn’t fit the stereotype of Republican heartlessness, so they distorted the facts to make it sound like she cut funding by $3.9 million. The same Snidely Whiplash effect is on display here but this time it’s a sin of omission rather than commission, leaving the 99 percent of viewers who’ve never heard of aerial wolf hunting to wonder why anyone would be so cruel.
Answer: To feed people. Slate’s Explainer explains:
Aerial shooting yields better results than traditional hunting, since it allows the hunter to cover a lot of ground quickly and track target animals from a clear vantage point. Historically, hunters also used planes to drive animals—polar bears in Alaska and elk in Montana, among others—toward gunmen waiting on the ground. But many hunters found the practice unsportsmanlike, since it violates the “fair chase” ethic, and animal rights activists call it inhumane, since airborne gunmen rarely get a clean (i.e., relatively painless) kill. In response to concerns like these, Congress passed the Federal Airborne Hunting Act of 1972, which made it illegal for hunters to shoot animals from a plane or helicopter.
The federal legislation (PDF) does have a loophole for predator control, permitting state employees or licensed individuals to shoot from an aircraft for the sake of protecting “land, water, wildlife, livestock, domesticated animals, human life, or crops.” (This doesn’t just apply to wolves; coyotes and foxes are sometimes gunned down from aircraft, especially in Western states.) Since 2003, Alaska has issued aerial wolf-hunting permits in select areas where moose and caribou populations are particularly endangered. The idea is that by killing the predators, the airborne gunmen can ramp up the number of moose and caribou that human hunters can take home for supper.
They killed 124 wolves this way over the winter, one-tenth the total amount trapped in Alaska each year. Estimated number of wildlife saved thus far: 1,500 moose and 3,000 caribou. But the idea that Palin gets her rocks off blowing away wolves from low-flying planes is much more compelling, so here you go, all pesky nuances pertaining to motive removed. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the media outrage over LIES!!!1! to explode over this the way it has over McCain’s ads.

they make a strong case for Palin there, if she can hunt down wolves for sport. Surely she can nab Bin Laden!

Proposition 2 was on our ballot this last election for the Stop of Ariel Hunting.. via the community but mainly the State Employees as well.. (Fish and Game). 75% of Alaska voted no on it, because honestly it is just cruel and if you are going to hunt, a plane is not the way to do it. Sportsmanship is very big up here.
So with that said, this is just a REMAKE of the Proposition 2 commercial that they were showing up here. Palin had nothing to do with this bill.

Ariel hunting?
So much for “Little Mermaid 2.”
Mr. Bingley on September 12, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Good grief! Farmers have every right to kill predators from attacking their livestock. My brother-in-law, a farmer, kills something every week that is wandering too close to his cows. So which is it? Save the caribou and moose or save the wolves? Jesus, these people cannot get enough of their “victim mentality”. Now they have to project it onto wild life. Idiots.
JAM on September 12, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Again, the moonbats miss the point. I’m sure they think “Why would anyone hunt for food when tofu and brie are available at any supermarket?”
Dan S. on September 12, 2008 at 3:32 PM
If the wolves aren’t culled and if their population isn’t controlled, they eventually turn to killing and eating each other. Just once, I wish one of these idiots would try to think before they open their immense yappers.

Since Gov. Palin’s selection, you’ve easily become the most important commenter on HotAir.
BadgerHawk on September 12, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Here, in North San Diego, I see coyotes running around the neighborhood, at least twice a week, around 7:00a.m., ever since the October 2007 fires. Hardly a night goes by without cats, dogs, and other animals being killed by coyotes or other wild animals, who’ve lost their food/living quarters, and are just trying to survive.
Dogs and cats are taken by coyotes in front of their owners, often in the daytime, in the back yards.
Children could be attacked at any time, and parents better watch carefully.
Yet, shooting is forbidden, and hardly anyone in government cares. Catastrophies are waiting to happen. Only when a few kids disappear, will the lefties and the government wake up.
Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 3:33 PM
From someone who kills coyotes in the lower 48, yes, we do want her to be VP.

I’ve got nothing against hunting in general; I love target practice with my pistols, and I have my CCP so I’m not a gun control nut…but it bothers me that this method apparently doesn’t produce very many clean kills. Should that bother me? Is it just that it’s too dangerous to hunt predators on land so it’s sort of a necessary trade-off? *confused*
JeepGirl on September 12, 2008 at 3:34 PM
I don’t think this ad will hurt her. It is obvious that there are good reasons to allow airborne hunting.
No one would believe that Palin simply likes the idea of making animals suffer as the ad implies.

We have to do the same here in Alabama because they kill pets and livestock. A neighbor makes coyote jerky. I wonder what wolf jerky tastes like.
AubieJon on September 12, 2008 at 3:36 PM
There is a difference in your Coyotes and Our Wolves… how about a longer cycle of reproduction. And the fact that coyotes go after humans… wolves, even up here, aren’t fond of us Humans.
We also have coyotes up here, that are usually killed by wolves.
upinak on September 12, 2008 at 3:36 PM
From one hunter to another(ish), we like to play fair up here. I may live here, but this is the Animals country.. and you have to be respectful.
upinak on September 12, 2008 at 3:38 PM
hey, upink, you can still hunt them as predators, right, just not from a plane? Some years ago government coyote hunters used to be able to kill coyotes from fixed wing planes to control the population in some states. Lately however, the mange has done a pretty good job of population control.
kam582 on September 12, 2008 at 3:38 PM
Ditto.
The argument is that aerial gunmen can’t get as clean a shot of the wildlife. Therefore, the animal gets shot someplace where it doesn’t die quickly.

So we now know that Palin knows how to kill a predator when she needs to…and what is wrong with that?
right2bright on September 12, 2008 at 3:41 PM
no worries. Sometimes the wolves get to become too large in packs. They are usually taken care of (a lottery for a hunt) but that takes years to get to that point.

It’s getting to the point that all of the liberal ads, either from Obama or his surrogates, are so full of lies and half-truths that nobody is going to listen anyway. After days an days easily disputed crapola, after the teasers for “explosive” reports that are nothing more than hyped innuendo, they have no credibility. And the fun part is that they just keep trying harder – and making themselves look more stupid. And yes, Charlie Gibson, I mean you.
Mini14 on September 12, 2008 at 3:43 PM
Unfortunately, this side of Palin (hunting) is unlikely to appeal to some of the suburban moms who might consider voting for her. It’s just a fact of life that people tend be sympathetic first — and logical second — about the plight of warm, fuzzy animals, unless they are raised in a family where hunting and/or animal husbandry are the norm.
The best way to combat this is line of attack to focus on Palin as the person with the expertise, as governor of Alaska, to bring our gas prices down. Salt in lots of pictures of Alaska, evoke pioneer/frontier images. I think suburbanites can accept that things are different for folks who live in places like Alaska. They may not be comfortable with the images of wolves being shot, but they will push those aside in order to bring gas prices down.
To me, the scariest thing about this post is that there is federal legislation pertaining to this. In what alternate reality have a landed where animal rights is a federal issue, but the application of the death penalty on humans is a state issue?

LimeyGeek on September 12, 2008 at 3:45 PM
If you must kill predators to control the population, I don’t see hunting from a plane any more/less cruel than trapping or hunting from the ground. For me, the issue would be to minimize the animals’ suffering… how quickly they die, once injured.
petefrt on September 12, 2008 at 3:45 PM
upinak, thanks for the reply. Coyotes can be a problem here for our upland bird populations and whitetail fawn populations, however rare for them to get a fawn I think. As I said though, the mange has done a pretty good job of keeping the population within acceptable ranges.

Micheal on September 12, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Sure,Ninja. Ariel hunting involves a power boat, a crab trap and a harpoon.
After you trap Sebastian, put him in pot of boiling saltwater. Reserve a tymbale of clarified butter and a wedge of lemon on the side. His ultrafrequency screams will attract the Little Mermaid, and shen she surfaces to try to help him, you harpoon her.
Ariel hunting is both easy and fun.
ManlyRash on September 12, 2008 at 3:49 PM
You have to understand why this was done, and what the consequences were.
I was there (living 50 miles from Yellowstone Park) back in the 1950s/60s/early 70s). That was many years before the re-introduction of wolves (another bad idea). The Park Service was shooting elk (wapiti) from aircraft inside the park because there were no natural predators, and since hunting was prohibited inside the park, population was exploding. When the law was passed to stop them, large numbers of the animals starved to death during the winter months.
My collie says:
Exactly.

Given that animals were placed on earth for human use( I know, I know it’s a God thingie) , and I don’t subscribe to anthropomorphism of any type , I.E. how do you provide “humane” treatment to an animal( especially since abortion is allowed, shall we discuss “humane”), I find animal culling and control by plane just fine. if you’re going to get up in arms, I suggest you dump your rifles and scopes and go after deer and such with your bare hands, I mean let’s be fair.
MNDavenotPC on September 12, 2008 at 3:50 PM
This is easily taken care of. The Republican party just needs to release a video of those same Alaskan wolves ripping a Caribou or a moose to shreds.
When you compare what humans do to animals as opposed to what animals do to other animals, we’re much much nicer.
Maybe these Animal rights freaks needs to stand outside the wolves dens and protest. One by one of course.
