Great news: Time for another thinly veiled pro-amnesty ad from McCain

posted at 4:04 pm on September 12, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Writes Kaus of the Spanish-language spot I posted earlier, “Would McCain ever run this ad in English?” Answer: Yeah, maybe, judging by this new one. The rhetoric from the Spanish-language clip about who’s “on the side” of illegals is dropped but the Orwellian habit of referring to “immigrants” instead of “illegal immigrants” is thoughtfully retained, as are the trademark McCain aspersions cast on the motives of amnesty opponents. Quote: “Whether from Italy, Ireland, Mexico, or the Far East, too often, new immigrants have been treated as objects of fear, instead of symbols of hope.” Which, of course, explains why most people who fought his comprehensive piece of shinola bill last year still support legal immigration, including from Mexico. Hey, Maverick? Not one more dime.

Good. Let’s solve it, I don’t have a problem with that. Here’s the plan:

Border security, attrition by enforcement, increased legal immigration.

Spirit of 1776 on September 12, 2008 at 4:06 PM

We need to make sure these “symbols of hope” use the front door instead of climbing the fence. Juan Hernandez is behind this I’m sure…

cannonball on September 12, 2008 at 4:06 PM

He doesn’t even need to talk about immigration. This is retarded. Focus on the freaking economy, and opening the doors is not good for the economy.

Connie on September 12, 2008 at 4:09 PM

I don’t remember who said it (perhaps more than one), or what thread, but recently a commenter here said, “I’d rather fight McCain on this issue than Obama”. And that about sums it up. For those who think the GOP would cooperate with McCain but not Obama, think back to when the controversy was full-swing; Bush was right there with McCain on amnesty. Did other Republicans back off because of it? No. Why should a President McCain be any different?

OneGyT on September 12, 2008 at 4:09 PM

What ever immigration reform plan McCain has it will be 120% better than Obama’s plan. If Obama could have it his way, there would be no passport requirement, no checkpoint between Mexico and USA. It would be a free for all for all.

McCain is dealing with a reality that the Republican party cannot ignore. Hispanics are here and many of them can vote. Ignore them at the risk of never having a Republican president ever again or a Republican senate or congress. It a choice that is open, but I would not recommend people to take it.

Yeah, keep bringing this up, AP. Perhaps Obama will then become POTUS.

People, guess what. McCain is our nominee and Palin (who is most deffinantly a conservative) would be one heart-beat way from being POTUS. Instead of posting stuff like this that may kill the current enthusiasm from Republicans/conservatives, how about we vote for the ticket and fight it afterwords.

carbon_footprint on September 12, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I understand the frustration with McCain, but –

The best way to prevent the next administration from passing an amnesty bill is to get a good number of Republicans in Congress. The only way that we’re going to get Republicans into Congress – at least on the basis of the latest polling – is on McCain/Palin’s coattails.

Anti-amnesty people should enthusiastically support McCain/Palin not because McCain is better on amnesty than Obama or vice versa. They should do it because the only way to block an amnesty bill from either Presidential candidate is to get Republicans into Congress – which will only happen if McCain/Palin win or make it close.

Otherwise: veto-proof Dem Congress + Obama. You really want to roll the dice on Kaus’s hope that Nancy Pelosi will listen to reason and take care of embattled Blue Dogs that she doesn’t need anyway or like?

omriceren on September 12, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Republicans have ZERO chance of getting the hispanic vote (except in Cuba, where it is locked up, so no need to pander to them). Why in Allah’s name would McCain risk pissing me off by pandering to a group that will vote between 75 and 90% for Obama? Answer: he knows he has me locked up, because the alternative to him is, well, Obama.

lionheart on September 12, 2008 at 4:16 PM

Sure McCain’s better than Obama, but I think that he could pull further ahead if he just shuts up about his amnesty plan.

McCain can say whatever he wants about illegals. Palin should take a stand on this issue (if she’s asked about it) and everyone with a brain in the GOP should just ignore McCain’s mistake on this, sticking to the simple idea of enforcing our laws and concentrating on interior enforcement. After the election, though, the fight is going to be on, big time.

So you don’t want McCain to be honest? Roger that!

Of course, if McCain were to say “Okay, I’m not longer pursuing amnesty” you all would go “Oh, he’s just pandering”.

Stop being Single-Issue Eagles! No candidate will ever be perfect.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 12, 2008 at 4:28 PM

I have to admit, I am glad he’s honest about it.

No one wants to be mean and cruel to the nice folks, John, we just want them to be legal. You said it yourself the other night – Americans. We want America for the Americans.

It is not a lot to ask. Bad enough the Democrats want America to be European and Socialist – be a stickler for human rights and dignity, but be a stickler for law and order too.

The illegal folks have got to go!

kybowexar on September 12, 2008 at 4:28 PM

Y’know what? Everyone who complains about the illegal immigration issue seems to think there’s actually something that can be done about it. Like putting up a fence. NEWS FLASH: IT DOESN’T WORK!

II is gonna happen in America. It’s just a matter of how much. We know McCain ain’t gonna change that, and we know Obama isn’t going to change that. NO ONE will change this, unless it’s city, county, or state law enforcement.

So everyone who are one-issue voters, specifically on Immigration, stop thinking one-issue and go to other issues.

Elric66 on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

A lot of Democrat voters oppose amnesty too, gov’t programs for illegals, all those incentives to even more illegal immigration, etc. Opposition by everyday Democrats is part of what stopped it the last go-round. We have to elect McCain, not Obama. Then afterwards fight McCain on this and other things.

McCain isn’t the only one who can reach across the aisle. If you know Dems who oppose that sort of thing, tell them to keep telling their representatives.

ForNow on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

I understand McCain thinks he’s got to play to the Hispanic vote, but not all Hispanics love having millions of illegals running around taking jobs from them either. I think he believes this is necessary to win the election, but c’mon … simply by stating his intent to immediately secure the borders, beef up enforcement, and declaring no amnesty … he’d sew it up right there.

Does he want to win or not?

darwin on September 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Attrition by enforcement around my town has been so successful in the county they have to close down about 80 classrooms for 6-12 grades, no students. It was much easier to meet the mandated student teacher ratio, they have to lay off around 100.

The other unintended consequence, plenty of U.S. citizen blacks are now being employed where we have not seen one in 10 years. The blacks say, that no one would hire them before. I wonder why?

tarpon on September 12, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Life is a shit sandwich and we’re all gonna have to take a bite. MCain is what he is on this issue and no one is going to move him off of where he is before election day. this is something that acolytes of Maverick and Goose will need to get their collective hands around or else say hello to President Obambi.

Maverick is calling for a fly-by on this, knowing the pattern is full, but he’s got to buzz the tower anyway. Its part of who he is and I have reluctantly made peace with it…until a jihadi crawls thru Laredo and tries to take out Dallas while the Rams are playing the Cowboys.

Holy mother of pearl! McCain – KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!!!!! I agree with one thing only. Fairness for all – LEGAL AMERICANS AND THOSE WHO ABIDE BY THE RULES. ILLEGAL ALIEN BORDER JUMPERS MUST BE DEPORTED ON SIGHT.

J.J. Sefton on September 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Sakaki, I am not a one-issue voter, but this is a big issue.

The whining can get a bit deafening at times, though.

Got an idea, (actually stole it from LaRaza), why don’t we simply annex Mexico. Then we could build the fence on their former southern border. It’s a lot shorter and mountainous.

Or we could simply keep the guards Mexico already has there to keep the folks out.

See it is okay if other countries protect their sovereignty. Why can’t we?

kybowexar on September 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

When President Obama proposes a pathway to citizenship, the GOP will fight against it. When President McCain proposes a pathway to citizenship, the GOP will fight FOR it.

Although Obama is worse that McCain on most issues, McCain is terribly wrong on the most important issue of all: voter demographics.

When McCain rams a pathway to citizenship down our throats, like he tried to in 2006 and 2007, the socialist votes of the 20+ million new citizens will overwhelm the votes of conservatives, probably forever.

Obaba is bad, but McCain as President means the demographic death of conservatism.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 12, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Minus the amnesty, I’ve got big no problems with McCain’s immigration policy. He’s on board with the fence and the current immigration policy is a joke that is being exploited by bleeding hearts and corrupt corporations alike.

Illegals from Mexico are a small part of the problem. The enormous problem is our 26 versions of guest worker visas, especially the TN visa, which is an absolute joke. Canada will give anyone a green card, then they can come to the US and stay here so long as they have a job and do paperwork once a year. Here is TX, they take a ride across the boarder, get a stamp, then back to living in the USA on high $$ jobs. Also, prior to Bush we had about half those visa, prior to Clinton was half again. There is no real justification for any of them. I know this first had from having run a company that dealt with these things.

Fence the boarder, reform the visa system, federally prosecute sanctuary cities and reform the path to citizenship from OUTSIDE the country. If you’re here and you’re illegal, you have forfeited your chance to citizenship… forever. I like citizens who follow laws.

I have no problem with legal immigration, and I don’t believe most Americans do…

Now as far as illegals go; they should be shipped out whenever they’re found.

The only “immigration reform” I really wanna consider now is:

1) Seal the Borders

2) Establish strict new, LOW levels for a few years, ’til the population level stablilizes-and no exceptions for relatives, no exceptions…period!

3) Overhaul the guest worker program, at both the high and low end, to make sure that no Americans are unemployed while were importing folks from India or Asia to do high-tech jobs…

4) Did I mention seal the borders?

Mav better be careful, no ‘Cuda good will can get him past this issue…

RocketmanBob on September 12, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Hmmmmm … I have to look at this differently now since Palin’s in the mix. As far as I can see she really does try to work with common sense. darwin on September 12, 2008 at 4:45 PM

I’m not going to get hung up with this at the moment as much as I disagree with the amnesty portion of the McCain/Kennedy bill.

Individual states are exercising their rights by enforcing stricter employment practices, etc. That’s probably the way to go since the Federal gov’t can’t get out of the PC mode to do anything. They will dither forever.

Support state legislation to curtail illegal immigration and any benefits allowed to illegals.

When President Obama proposes a pathway to citizenship, the GOP will fight against it. When President McCain proposes a pathway to citizenship, the GOP will fight FOR it.

Time for a reality check here. Despite today’s polling numbers, Republicans are likely to lose seats in both the House and Senate. Dems could gain a veto-proof (and more than enough for cloture) seats in the Senate. Lindsey Graham & Crew aren’t going to abandon amnesty because it’s a Democrat pushing for it.

Well, just to get the ball rolling, I heard it from a guy who knows a guy who saw it on the daily kos that Palin supports illegal russian immigrants in alaska.

She even supports ’sanctuary igloos.’

Not only that, she sponsored and strong armed a measure to give away free hunting rifles to illegal russian imigr- wait – “undocumented” russian not yet US citizens so they could kill animals in alaska, so Palin could take the carcases and line them up to form a 5 mile word, only visable from the air in an alaskan bush plane. It read: “F*CK PeTA!”. (without the “*” but the letter “U”.)

And another Palin immigration fact: John McCain never seriously considered anyone else for VP unless the candidate could sing at least two mexican folk songs by heart. Sarah Palin sang 4 and then 2 russian folk songs.

Attrition works. If Palin sells us out on this she’s dead to me.

someone on September 12, 2008 at 4:55 PM

Oppose McCain!
(no matter how great Palin is.)

People, don’t fall for the dems on this site posing as conservatives. Notice they only come out of the word work when topics like this pop up.
DethMetalCookieMonst on September 12, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Even if they aren’t they still want exactly the same thing as other Obama supporters. For McCain to lose, and for Obama to win.

I don’t know how successful some of us will be, but civilian arrests of illegals as we see them, we’ll do…. reporting of illegals at Home Depot, we’ll do…. and, being a card carrying member of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, I’ll make sure illegals know I see them. Those who don’t like it, tough!

…. do you think you might want to actually wait until Palin ’sells you out’ before you trash her? …. no?

I didn’t think so.

Right, they swim the Bering straits and at night they sneak across ANWR.

Yeah, forget about judges, Iraq, Iran, fighting terror, and energy. Oppose McCain because he supports amnesty. When Obama’s sitting down for tea with Ahmadenijad we can all comfort ourselves with the fact we voted against McCain because he supports amnesty.

amerpundit on September 12, 2008 at 4:53 PM

This tactic isn’t about stopping people from voting for McCain. It’s about cooling the excitement of the base, and stopping donations, volunteering and other activities that resulted from Palinmania. It’s a tactic that will work if he keeps McCain talking about it. Hell, you can see it working here on these boards, since for the last two weeks all we have seen are articles about Palin, and today all were seeing is McCain talking about how great “immigrants” are.

This is one of a few issues I totally disagree with McCain on.

This is what is happening right now in my neighborhood. I see two homes across from mine that have been foreclosed. Yes, Hispanics lived there and now they don’t. Banks have taken them over.

Also, right next door to my home is one where they left last week. For severals weeks, they had yard sales. Two weeks ago the woman came over to use my phone. She spoke a little English. He had been laid off, he used to do lawn service, but due to the draught in Georgia, his workload dropped off to nothing and she couldn’t find work cleaning homes. They were moving back to Guatemala. The house is empty now, no for sale sign up, and the a/c is running. I’m waiting for the bank to come and take the house over. This does wonders for our pricing of homes in this neighborhood.

They come for jobs, not for anything else. They don’t come for the love or the opportunities this country offers. This is what McCain doesn’t get. When things go bad, they pack-up and leave and go back to where they came from. They can’t even put the house up for sale. Just abandon it.

Too bad McCain can’t figure this out.

I am thinking perhaps McCain thinks the conservatives are taken care of with Sarah … so he can go after the liberals.

Dangerous.

I am ALL FOR LEGAL IMMIGRATION. I am extremely against illegal immigration and the costs Americans pay, not just in money. As excited as I am about Sarah Palin, that topic can still be a deal breaker for me and my very conservative husband.

Folks, let’s remember this.

Obama for streamlining H2B visa process

What is an H2B visa?

From ski resort workers in Colorado to amusement park employees in Florida, 66,000 temporary workers come to the US on H2B visas.

Who is eligible?

The H2B visa is available to employers of foreign workers not working in the agricultural field. This visa is only available for work that is temporary in nature. For H2B purposes, that means:

* Recurring seasonal need;
* Intermittent need;
* Peak-load need; and
* One time occurrence.

The employer must also prove that there are no unemployed US workers willing or able to do the work. This is established through the state’s employment agency using a labor certification process. This process requires a recruitment campaign, including advertising in a local newspaper for available temporary workers.

Which there are lawyers here that help to get around this pesky provisions so that Americans are not hired.

Visa validity

The duration of the visa is limited to the employer’s need for the temporary workers. The maximum authorized period is one year. However, the employer may extend the duration of the visa up to three years — but with a very close watch from the immigration authorities.

Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.

Applying for the Visa

If the prospective worker is outside of the US, he must then apply for a visa with the US consulate.

The H-2B visa application includes:

* DS-156, Application for Nonimmigrant Visa
* DS-157 if male between the ages of 16 and 45)
The necessary filing fees
* Copy of Notice of Approval of H-2B Petition
* Passport
* One passport-style photo
* Evidence of ties to the home country (family, property, current occupation, etc.) Like with any other nonimmigrant visa, the Consulate needs to see that each applicant has ties to the country so that he or she will return home after their work period ends.

Yeah. That can’t be faked, right?

If the prospective worker is already in the US and is changing from one nonimmigrant status to another, a visa is not required. However, if the worker leaves the US and wants to re-enter, s/he may need a visa.

Bringing family members

Spouses of H-2B visa holder or an unmarried child under 21 years of age of H-2B visa holder are issued an H-4 visa. They may remain in the US as long as the authorized stay of the H-2Avisa holder. H-4 visa holders are not permitted to work in the US.

What happens if they happen to download a kid here, eh?

Petitioning for several workers

It is possible, in some cases, for employers to file blanket petitions (that is, one petition for several individual employees).

Take home, McCain makes his pitches, but Teh One would be worse.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 12, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Amerpundit – that is exactly right.

To me the biggest issue (and a single issue if I had to pick one) is judges.

Folks, the president is the executive – some great powers and all that, but with the SCOTUS acting like half of them have never seen the Constitution, much less read it, the one power that the president has is very, very important.

Have I mentioned it is important. Hello! Do you really want Obama to pick your Supreme Court judges?

No, I don’t think so.

I agree with you, but why is McCain raising this now? Death wish / loss wish ? He ralllies ‘the base’ with Palin, then tosses this rotten egg at us. I know the man is stubborn–and stubborn can be Good–but I just don’t get it

He must have ‘political intell’ that there are His-panic votes up for grabs in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, etc
