Video: Plucky upstart gets hero’s welcome in Alaska

posted at 12:30 pm on September 11, 2008 by Allahpundit

Scenes from a homecoming, early this morning in Fairbanks:

NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger reports that Palin couldn’t wait to descend down the stairs from her campaign plane lat night. The plans called for her to wait for the media and staff to leave first, set up, and then allow the doors to open for a grand entrance. But the sight of her family, and several thousand of her Alaskan brethren waiting for her on the tarmac of the Fairbanks airport, was too much. Palin could be heard nearly squealing with delight in the front of the plane at the sight of three of her children at the foot of the stairs, and according to several aides, refused to stay inside the plane.

For all the (often belittling) references to her as a hockey mom and moose-hunter, the key to the public’s fascination with her, I think, is the unexpected flashes of brilliance she shows as a retail politician. No one I know, even among blog readers and grassroots conservatives who have been high on her for months, saw that coming; the assumption was that if McCain picked her, we’d be getting someone young, smart, appealing, with a welcome reputation for ethics and a compelling bio, but probably a bit out of her depth on big stages trying to connect with voters. Watch the first five minutes here and appreciate how expertly she works the crowd. It’s all very colloquial and apparently off-the-cuff, but there’s more artistry than meets the eye. Maybe Charlie Gibson’s right to hope she goes easy on him.

Speaking of which, your exit question: What time should a panicky pessimistic blogger start drinking today to be properly “prepared” for the first segment of Gibson’s interview with her? It won’t air in full until 6:30 ET, but the first clips should start appearing around 4 p.m. on ABC’s website. No time like the present!

Update: Needless to say, the excitement is worth a lot more than buzzworthy clips of people cheering on the news.

I love Sarah Palin.
I can not imagine republican politics without her any longer.

She’s so…normal! I love it. If I saw a roaring crowd with my friends and family, there to cheer me on, I’d be anxious to get off the plane too.

Her smile is contagious too. : )

She loves Alaska, she is proud of Alaska, and Alaska will have the largest influx of tourists this year and next.
Enthusiasm is contagious, real heart felt enthusiasm, and you just feel her project that to the crowd.
You can’t fake that, she is pure Alaskan…and pure American.

Speaking of which, your exit question: What time should a panicky pessimistic blogger start drinking today to be properly “prepared” for the first segment of Gibson’s interview with her?

Don’t panic. I think Charlie Gibson is the most capable (of the broadcast network anchor) of conducting a fair, yet serious, interview. Undoubtedly, there will be some unpleasant surprises – either in terms of policy positions that Palin holds or turns of phrase or factual errors – but I really doubt she will bomb this interview.

The McCain-Palin camp should quickly follow this interview with a live appearance on Special Report or Fox News Sunday… sort of like a “redirect” after cross-examination, as well as a chance to show her thinking on her feet.

Y-not on September 11, 2008 at 12:42 PM

To me she’s not a politician, she’s a person. Exactly the kind of person I want to see in the White House!

I would like the person who said a day or two before McCain picked her that Sarah was “boring” and “won’t bring anything to the ticket” to come out from hiding. I think it was Eric???

thevastlane on September 11, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Perfect! The image of her refusing to bow down to entrance protocol because she was so excited to see her AK brethren and her family reinforces her genuine article appeal. Contrast that with Barry standing before the Greek temple or in Germany.

Awesome, she is such a natural because she doesn’t see her fellow citizens as pawns in her political quest.

Obama would never race to the front of the plane, he would make everyone else get off first to make sure the red carpet was properly aligned and the press were stationed to get the best pics of his good side.

Elizabetty on September 11, 2008 at 12:50 PM

The thing that I find so amazing after reading many of the comments from readers from many articles about Governor Palin is how the left absolutely hates her. I think it shocks me so much because I know several women, sans her ability to speak under enormous pressure, just like her. She a pretty typical small town, love her family, love America, get it done, woman. The hate they spew just floors me. It’s like they hate America.

But then again, maybe it’s not hate, maybe it’s fear.

kam582 on September 11, 2008 at 12:51 PM

I don’t think Palinmania is deep and strong enough yet. We need a thread devoted to adoration of the way she laughs to herself. (I’m not completely sure whether I’m joking.)

Politico GOP foreign policy brain trust worried about Palin?

This is a dumb thing, everyone that ran in the primarys got briefed on foreign affairs by the white house. Sarah Palin, is the VP nominee on the Republican side. Of Course she is going to be briefed just like Obama has been briefed. Trying to create new out of no news at all?

Dr Evil on September 11, 2008 at 12:56 PM

When Sarah Palin appears, indeed fresh air accompanies. But moreover, Palin’s speaches are as enjoyable as nutritious homemade meals. Getting on her platform is fun and the bandwagon ride is great!

The Little Dutch Boy took his thumb out of the dike. Biden jumped ship off Obama’s ticket, publicly begging Hillary to take his place. The entire DNC Titanic is struck and going down! Logical Democrats are announcing themselves to be Independents, Libertarians, and Reagan Republicans; all aligning with McCain for POTUS ’08!

I truly believe she meant it and was very genuine about it. She a true believer, a Patriot. It isn’t just a line with her.

Strange, I’ve never felt such enthusiasm for a politician. When it came to Obama’s followers, I wrote off such enthusiasm but much of that I believe had to do with what his empty words. Still, I need to ask myself how honest I am with myself in that. Something to ponder.

You are once again tone deaf Allah. It is not the fact that she is a brilliant politician that people love her. They relate to her, she is one of us. She represents all of the strong women out there who have accomplished amazing things but still love being a mother and embrace their femininity. She is also fresh, untainted by Washington politics. Her nomination also makes this election a moral confrontation with the 1960′s radical left, whom Obama is clearly an adherent of. This is a battle for the heart and soul of the nation, not some contest of sound bytes.

BTW – I pity the East Coasters who weren’t watching this Fairbanks Triumph live – roadblocked on cable news, with David Gergen on CNN burbling dyspeptically about how “bizarre” it was that so much attention was being lavished on the event. Yakko77 on September 11, 2008 at 1:12 PM

When Sarah Palin appears, indeed fresh air accompanies.

She’s already another “Morning in America” campaign just by showing up. When she turns out to be smart, articulate, gracious, and on the side of the angels – it seals the deal.

CK MacLeod on September 11, 2008 at 1:13 PM

I liked the part in the speech at about 13:30 where she starts getting wonky and is really relying on the teleprompter, then she stops and says: “I feel like I’m preaching to the choir, you guys already know this” and then gets back on form. A bit of a bobble and a rough spot, but she’ll smooth that over with a bit more experience in these settings.

PackerBronco on September 11, 2008 at 1:15 PM

From Politico

Offering policy counsel will be Steve Biegun, a seasoned foreign policy specialist who did stints as a senior member of Bush’s National Security Council and as national security adviser to former Sen. Bill Frist, when he was Senate majority leader. He’s taken a leave from his position as a government affairs executive at Ford Motor Co.

Also helping on the policy front is Joe Donoghue, a longtime McCain aide who has worked for years in the Arizonan’s Senate office. He’ll travel with Palin and serve as a liaison to the campaign headquarters on issues.

BacaDog on September 11, 2008 at 1:18 PM

At 8:00 when she’s thanking the troops. Awesome!!!

Yakko77 on September 11, 2008 at 1:18 PM

And Sean Cockerham of the ADN proves that no matter where you are, reporters will be reporters:

It’s the first time Palin has returned to Alaska since McCain tapped her Aug. 28 to be their party’s nominee for vice president. She has since become something of a rock star for the Republicans, drawing big, enthusiastic crowds across the nation despite essentially repeating, often verbatim, the highlights of her Republican National Convention Speech at each campaign stop.

Slublog on September 11, 2008 at 1:20 PM

lionheart on September 11, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Regarding Governor Palin’s speech in Fairbanks today:

WOW! She barely looked at her notes, has memorized much of her stump speech, was able to weave pieces of the stump speech through her welcoming remarks, included self-deprecating humor, and appeared completely comfortable, genuine and connected well with her audience.

Senator Biden better practice really hard to give the appearance that he is genuine. However, as to his need to look superior to us little people, I don’t think he needs to try any harder than normal to prove he is an elitist.

I love Sarah Palin! She is so strong! She and I are nearly the same age and I look at what all she has accomplished and it simply amazes me.

Someone else commented on the fact she hasn’t cried yet. I don’t see how she’s kept from it. It has to be simply overwhelming to give such an acceptance speech to the nation and then introduce your family to the world. Her wonderful husband and beautiful children. Then to fly back to her home state and be greeted by that warm welcome and seeing her kids waiting for her. Gosh, I cry if I spend one night away from my kids.

She’s obviously a strong woman and she’ll be a great VP.

She’s lovely and strong. She hunts game and yet she’s feminine. She’s a governor in a state where everyone just refers to her as Sarah because she’s so like them. She has common sense and she gets things done. She spoke of the Northern Star. She’s now our political Northern Star.

While I’m happy to see Palin join the ticket, I’d really like
to see some of her “standard” lines (“candidates who use change to promote their careers and others who use their careers to promote change”) be used less often. It’s a great line, and I absolutely loved it when I heard it at the convention, but I have to admit that I feel like I’ve heard it too much since then.

The crowds who throng to Obama cheer him and chant his name because he is a blank canvas on which they project their hopes and dreams in a desire for “change,” a nebuluous, charged word they can neither define nor articulate.

The crowds who throng to Sarah Palin (and that old guy) cheer her and, while they sometimes chant her name, they usually chant “USA.” Anything but a blank canvas, she is the avatar of a life fully lived and the exemplar of a conservative political philosophy fully practiced.

The popularity of Sarah Palin is an indicator not so much of who she is but what she represents – and that is what resonates with her political base.
