Video: Palin on the Bush Doctrine, 9/11, and Pakistan

Yeah, he came off condescending and asked questions of her no one ever thinks to ask The One, like how many countries he’d visited before becoming a senator. The exchanges were chopped to a fine mince too on the editing machine, which is why I didn’t include the bit where he asked her what insight Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her into their actions and she said, “They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.” Did she really give a non-answer that goofy or did they just smear her by editing it that way? I would have given them the benefit of the doubt earlier but not after botching the prayer quote.
That said, it’s pretty clear she doesn’t know what he means by the Bush Doctrine and can’t answer the Pakistan question in anything but platitudes about stopping Islamic extremism. Even the gimme about the 9/11 hijackers’ motivations comes out garbled: She’s trying to make the basic neocon point that terrorism is a problem caused by political repression and solved by democracy, but it sounds as if she’s trying to patch it together from mental index cards, which … may in fact be what she was doing. Or maybe she was just nervous. Or thrown by Gibson’s demeanor. Not good, whichever it is, but 99% of the people who love her won’t care and the 1% who do can probably be brought around with a good interview tomorrow and, especially, a good debate with Biden. Now, tell me how brilliant she was and how wrong I am.
Update: Meant to say, I think ABC inadvertently did her a huge favor in their choice of excerpts to highlight. She came off fine in asserting that she’s ready to be VP and in making the mundane McCainish point about admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO. The Iraq prayer segment was iffier thanks to Gibson’s distortion, but she did okay in connecting it up to Lincoln. Fearless prediction: The Democrats will make more hay out of the stuff you see below than the stuff ABC was touting earlier.

To BDS sufferers like Charlie, the “Bush doctrine” is “Republican administration’s decisions will always be wrong, no matter how much the media has to twist facts and events to make it appear so”.
This was less an interview than a mild inquisition. What I saw were questions intended to be “gotchas”, but Charlie thought Palin would be much easier to “gotch”.

Gee there BigWyo, any other big groups of people you hate. I’m an active duty officer myself. What would make you say something like that?

Allah,
you are wrong…way wrong…She handleed the interveiw with style and class. the Bush doctrine was a trap..she avoided it. The pakistian thing was right on. We have a right to invade pakistian if our security is at stake. We should not invade for the hell of it, to reduce the taliban attacks on afganistian etc. but if we have evidence that a nuclear warheadhas gone missing or have falling into the hands of the tailban then yes. She did nto rule out that possiblity just stated that if we go in it should be our last option and we should have a grave threat to the nation.
her answer to the 9/11 was right also. a few people out of islam hate us enough to attack us, the majority probably still hate us but not enough to attack.
Her answer on Isreal was right on and bush should take notes. If Bush would have kept his fingers out of the last Hezzbolh/Isreali war Iran would not be the threat it is now.
The Nato example was right on.
She may not be 100% ready today but in 2 months she will be and in 4 years..yes…

She has to have her sh*t together way better than this.
Dave Rywall on September 11, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Someone finally got it right! She wasn’t chosen for her foreign policy knowledge, everyone knows it, yet Charlie was just exploiting it. As with every administration, they’ll be surrounded with experts in all areas, esp. the ones in which the POTUS or VP are somewhat weak in.
I’d be willing to bet that her knowledge of energy is the strongest of any POTUS/VP or candidate in history. Isn’t that one of the top three issues on the minds of the American people?

progressoverpeace on September 11, 2008 at 10:44 PM
She did better than fine.
Gibson was eliciting yes or no answers and even stooped to saying he was lost in a blizzard when she refused the bait to give an easy yes or no, either of which would have been used to do her serious harm on both the Bush doctrine and invading Pakistan.
Listen again if you are in doubt Gibson wants yes or no and she gives a great answer “we have to keep all options on the table when dealing with Islamic terrorists that would do us harm”,” War as a last resort”.
Whats’ she supposed to say we will invade Pakistan as 0B0mba did? She has to be careful as 0B0mba should have been in regard to invading sovereign nations who are friendly to us.
She has to be Presidential and she absolutely was.
dhunter on September 11, 2008 at 10:44 PM
You’re right- half the problem is all the hype. I mean, Palin never asked her supporters to start calling her Barracuda and wearing campaign pins that depict a bulldog. All this based on her short record as governor in a small state and a few speeches?
The bar has been set so high by her own party, that it’s going to be hard for her to live up to the image in interviews. If she looks merely average, it’s going to be a problem.
bayam on September 11, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Charlie was smug in his questioning, but let’s not be tempted to label it sexist. He’d have assumed the same attitude toward Dan Quayle. He simply had the air of a seasoned professional dealing with someone he viewed as a lightweight. And I’m afraid she came off as something of a lightweight in the first segment. The Bush Doctrine question was unfair. He could have been affixing a label to any aspect of Bush’s policy. And asking him to be more specific was just the right move. Shows she’s savvy enough to smell a trap. After all, he could have zigged and said, “No, I meant this Bush Doctrine.” She could be clearer on the link between self-defense and pre-emption in a post-nuclear age. Pre-emption being the best form of self-defense, if safe-guards are in place. She got me back in the second segment, because she employed the Lincoln reference well. Still she could have chided Charlie for asserting that she was making a statement of fact that they were on a mission from God, when she was actually expressing hope that this would prove to be the case. Again, Charlie was being a little snaky there. It’s pretty apparent from the context that that was what she was doing.

Soo, 19 months after he announces his candidacy, Obama agrees to be interviewed by the only guy in town who has any real tough questions. The day after this stunning concession, his opponent Sarah Palin, who has been on the scene for 1 week, gives her own.
How does Obama respond? By going on Saturday Night Live.
In the perfect and comfortable hindsight of a Republican administration, the irony of this moment will be gigantic.
The man is under a real threat, and his solution is to go on a comedy show? What impression does that give? That this is all some kind of joke to him?
Is Axlerod still running his campaign, or did he disappear into the desert?
pomerpants on September 11, 2008 at 10:47 PM
I have to agree with Hawkdriver.
What were people expecting? She would spout the greatest oratory since William Jennings Bryan? That she would turn the tables on Charlie and beat him with his own stick?
She answered the questions even the gotchas ones like the “Bush Doctrine”(which by the way Charlie smugly proclaimed he understood when he didn’t.) She didn’t “hum, haw, um, oh” like another candidate. She didn’t make any serious gaffes. She appeared somewhat comfortable. She was willing to point out an error, the “God’s plan” misquote. She wasn’t flippant but she wasn’t slow. She wasn’t off track but she didn’t sound like a talking points robot. Remember, she is the number two. She actually has to be more careful in what she says
I think she did fine. Just remember, she is actually up against the man the Iraqis hate and the Iranians love, and it ain’t Obama.

I’ll close out my posting tonight with the same comment I started with in challenging Allahpundit.
How much of these stupid attacks on Palin (including Allah’s) are nothing more than witnessing a real American answering questions normally reserved for the political class? Career politicians know how to deflect or respond to idiots like Gibson far more smoothly but does that mean Obama has a clue what the Bush Doctrine is? I don’t think so!
Network interviews are far too limited a venue for broad questions that aren’t interesting to the sheeple. A legitimate response to Gibson’s question would require far more hours than the time alloted and idiots including so-called Palin supporters here need to understand that fact. Some questions can’t be answered in 10 seconds.
highhopes on September 11, 2008 at 11:07 PM
I really admire Palin and I would have to give her a grade of ‘C’ at best. I have heard others discuss the Bush Doctrine moment and I would say her request for a clarification looked like a fishing expedition for a definition, which Charlie gave her, but she should have known (definitely a planned gotcha moment by Gibson). I think Palin is MUCH better unscripted and she came across as very nervous and almost strident, but I think that was the choppy editing in part. She appeared VERY hawkish and is being presented as “scary” hawkish in the MSM even though her response on NATO, was policy and exactly in line with the other Obama/Biden.
Slightly off-topic, do we really want to go to war with Russia over Ukraine and Georgia? I know the idea is the NATO deterrant should prevent Russia from starting one, but we need to fully comprehend that we are potentially putting war with Russia into an automatic mode that could be turned into a “he said, she said” moment over who started it? How far fetched would it be if Georgia tried some moves into the breakaway provinces of Georgia clandestinely and Russia responds militarily again to protect ethnic Russians? If Georgia were part of NATO, we would be at war with Russia and a WHOLE chain of events no one wants to explore could kick-in.
If they are part of NATO and the crap hits the fan, do we really think all of Europe is going to go to war with Russia over Georgia? If I can see us hesitating, how much more do you think Germay and France will hesitate and will that be the end of NATO? I think we need to find better levers to control Russia agression on the ground like G8 membership then the brinksmanship of Georgia as part of NATO. Just my .02 – sorry to go off-topic.

Charlie Gibson is an arrogant and condescending snotbag. I haven’t seen any of the interview, so I watched this clip. Man, what a p-rick. Has he interviewed Obama? Was he a monotoned parent-like ass with him? My god Charlie, get that stick out of your bum.

Let’s get real here. After 8 years as VP, the nation decided that Al Gore wasn’t ready to be President. Same goes for Mondale (only 4 yrs there, though). Perhaps being “ready” isn’t the only qualification?
As for Obama, he doesn’t meet anyone’s minimum qualifications. Sure, being a
bag man forcommunitybribery and voter fraudorganizer has some value, but it doesn’t count as either executive or chain-of-command experience. Being a legislator who usually voted “present” is hardly an indicator of leadership, either.stonemeister on September 11, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Nah, I think you were spot-on. The “Bush Doctrine” portion was terrible, that’s for sure.
But in the interest of full disclosure, I’m an Obama supporter, and I hope that saying the following won’t hurt your cred around here…
I gotta say that you earned my respect a long time ago for your intellectual honesty, and this reaffirms that. You’re unafraid to come on here and call it as you see it, even if you know that it may not be popular. Even if we disagree on 90% of the issues (and we probably do), I think we’d be a lot better off if more people on both sides had this approach. It’s something I’ve tried to do in a part-time capacity on my own blog, and it’s the reason why your one of my favorites.
ChenZhen on September 11, 2008 at 11:14 PM
I felt like I was watching a completely different Sarah Palin today. Where’s the confident smart-alecky Sarah I saw at the RNC?
I don’t fault her for this. I fault McCain’s campaign staff for it. They threw her to the ABC wolves too soon. She needed more time to come up with analytical answers from campaigning experience rather than memorized safe responses.

Palin did well considering this was her first interview with the national media. She’s smart, savvy, and learns fast. She can only go up from here. By next month she’ll probably be untouchable … which will make the media even more rabid than they are now.
darwin on September 11, 2008 at 11:17 PM

crr6 on September 11, 2008 at 11:21 PM
She’s been doing similar things on a smaller scale for years. Out of the spotlight. Same procedure. Different person. She can handle herself in front of crowds and in front of one man seated in a chair in front of her. I’d like her to do more, but only on her terms. She’s doing an important job now – learning and getting ready to be up to speed in the job and the requirements that she’s applying for.
And of course she’s very close to that already, but there is more to prepare for. She already has her base experience and skills. Now they need to be sharpened for this.

Dave Rywall on September 11, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Obama’s simply reaching his core base by going on SNL, that’s all. He had the one and only tough interview with O’Reilly; I saw all segments of it, and I don’t think he answered a single question with a real answer. But that little fact doesn’t matter to his mindless voters.
Sarah did great, and tone of Gibson only cements the naked reality of bias in the MSM to the American public.

And come to think of it, McCain has done the same thing here, throughout his entire career. Intellectual honesty and respecting the opposition and calling things as he sees them. Yet for some people, this is a negative. If it’s good for blog employees, it should also be good for politicians.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?
PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska. We cannot repeat the Cold War. We are thankful that, under Reagan, we won the Cold War, without a shot fired, also. We’ve learned lessons from that in our relationship with Russia, previously the Soviet Union.

Someone mentioned (Fox new commentator after the Obama interview on O’Reilly, I think) the way Hillary conducted herself with her O’Reilly interview – as compared to Obama’s interview. Like night and day. Obama is definitely much better when he’s in front of a loving crowd. Or a sympathetic interviewer, such as Olbermann. I think that if Obama is elected, he might grow into the job. I sincerely hope he doesn’t get in. But interviews are only one way to judge a person’s performance when there is a climate – not openly hostile, but adversarial. Gives a little peek into how they operate with their personality.
Also going off prompter. Obama makes his mistakes and misspeaks more often when he’s away from his script.

Sorry, just sayin.
trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Uh huh. That must by why there are sometimes a half a dozen comments on any give page where people here express otherwise. Especially when the headline is misleading (such as Condoleezza Rice’s non endorsement of Obama that sounded like an endorsement) or unnecessarily pessimistic. At no time have I seen people ask or demand that he parrot the GOP line. Just that he doesn’t always see the 80% full glass as almost empty. It gets tiring after a while. But that’s his routine. Complaining about this after all of this makes as much sense as being upset that they have a greasy spoon at a greasy spoon diner.

Sorry, the platitude from conservatives newest BFF was just another example to me how they expect a much different behavior from us than they do from themselves. I’d say again, polish, but no where near as bad as the abysmal display from Obama at Saddle Back.
I took the gloves off two weeks ago. These people are not our friends. They don’t want a two-party system. They want to completely destroy any political opposition and opinion that isn’t in lock step with theirs.
The last time there was this much propaganda in the media, Joe Goebbels was in charge of the mic. Just give them a chance to enact the Fairness Doctraine. Chenzen won’t have to worry about the 90 percent of what you say that he disagrees with then.

Obama’s not quick on his feet. I’m actually glad Palin faced Gibson, and I’m glad he was as tough as he was. Throwing softballs at her won’t help her. Whether he knows it or not, he did her a huge favor. She now knows what to expect … and I have no doubt she’ll be ready.

New Obama strategy: If your efforts to co-op the efforts of others (such as McCain’s efforts to reform Washington) fail, co-opt McCain. Newsflash: Obama proclaims Obama/McCain ticket!

No-win question. All the answers are taking place behind the scenes.

I think Sarah needs to be Sarah. She’s clearly trying to hard here. Look at her body language–she looks tense and ill at ease. Maybe it’s the editing. I don’t trust the media when it comes to editing. Remember Connie Chung’s interview with Gary Condit? He was smart to insist that it air unedited and Chung came off looking like crapola.
My opinion of her hasn’t changed one iota. I love this lady and can’t wait to see her run for president one day. Will she make mistakes? You bet, but she’s a quick study and she’ll turn weaknesses into strengths through sheer willpower.
jaleach on September 11, 2008 at 11:43 PM
The interview was disappointing because we all know she can do much better, but she did well enough. Her answer on the Bush Doctrine was disappointing, but it’s a trickier question than it first appears. If you asked someone about the Bush doctrine and they didn’t seem to understand the reference, you would probably explain what you meant so they could answer the question. If you’re a teacher, or perhaps a “Journalist” who considers it his responsibility to vet candidates for the American people, then you don’t explain: you try to make her prove she knows what it is.
That’s a good example of why Gibson will look bad in this interview. Rather than just interview the candidate, it appears he wants to examine and grade the candidate.
Notice also how he pushes for a “Yes or No” answer to a question like whether or not we should invade Pakistan. I’m betting there isn’t a president or senator or secretary of state who would commit to an answer on that question during a television interview. I think the best answer to the question is to look the interviewer in the eye and say, “That’s a very sensitive issue to be discussed between the US and Pakistan, and I’m hardly going to commit myself in advance on national TV.”
The interview is about more than whether she can pass an exam proving she knows foreign policy. She also has to avoid gaffes, avoid saying things they can hang her with later, avoid contradicting McCain — the Bush Doctrine being particularly tricky — and most importantly, avoid looking like she’s trying to avoid anything.
It’s amazing even politicians agree to these interviews…

Nightline is running the same parts of the interviews but more fleshed out. This is significantly better.
Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 11:44 PM
I was watching the Nightline peice, I had to turn it off. She is as clueless as Obama.

I know I’m late to this party, but as someone who has experience in editing clips and working out continuity issues within planned shots that has to be one of the worst edited “live” interviews I have ever seen. There are several instances where you can tell they cut answers together to skew her answer as a non-answer or sound like an idiot. Just follow her hand throughout the segment. Notice where her hand is at all times before and after each cut, you’ll see there are times where she has that hand up, pumping at Charlie, then in the next edit its down at her side, next cut its back up again. They obviously decided to cut this together in a bias fashion.
Also, notice the camera work. No major interview I have seen has been done in such a horrible fashion. The cameramen knew she was going to be shot at a downward angle, they didn’t correct that. When she made a forceful answer to Charlie they kept the edit at the side camera instead of showing her expressions head on, and there was one instance where they panned and zoomed in on her during the question from Charlie, in a shot you’d more readily see in a CSI type show to give you a foreboding feeling when the cop questions the perp.
I really would like to see the complete, unedited version.
smfoushee on September 11, 2008 at 11:48 PM
That’s the plan exactly. She is a mirror for Obama, and now that she’s opened the experience debate, we can start the “who’s got the balls?” debate.

Thanks for serving late on troll patrol and posting rational and relevant posts to this thread. My sense is that the sewers of doubt and dissent are desperate to derail the enthusiasm generated by Palin.
Loxodonta on September 11, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Oh, I agree completely. When republicans want to be bi-partisan and meet the democrats half way, the democrats version of that is two steps on the rope bridge, and then expecting the republican to go the rest of the way to ‘meet in the middle.’
I strongly dislike most of the vocal democrats. I don’t despise every one of them. Because not every one of them thinks the same way. If he wants to have a gentleman’s discussion, I think that this is a very good thing. Alphie only wants to taunt and not have any discussion. I was at that point completely not long ago. And I see how ugly that can be. I have my moments where I’m ashamed to go back and read my own words. I try to be more level headed. Especially when it’s uncalled for to be so militant about it.
Heres one reason why. I despised the people who constantly did the ‘Bush isn’t my president’ routine. They actually think that Bush stole the election, or that he knew about 9/11, or that he lied about Iraq. If Obama is elected, then he’ll be my president. I hope that he wont do some of the things he’s promised to do (such as riding us of all of our nuclear weapons and such in these dangerous times we live in.) I saw the same thing here, when McCain won the republican primaries. Neanderthals in our own group were doing the ‘McCain’s not my republican candidate’ BS that the democrats did for so long. Some even joked about McCain croaking, and how great that would be. BEcause they disagree with his policy.
Anyway, I do concur that most of them (democrats) are not our friends. But they aren’t all the people you see at the protests.
