Video: Ferraro easing off Obama?

posted at 11:00 am on September 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Geraldine Ferraro appeared on Fox to give her take on the “lipstick” issue, and perhaps caught Greta van Susteren by surprise. Given Ferraro’s ferocious attack on Obama’s multiple occasions of sexist imagery, the former VP candidate seems strangely sanguine now about Obama’s intent as opposed to his rhetoric:

“I don’t think he’s a sexist.” Well, Obama has to be glad to hear that — considering Ferraro’s full-frontal attack on Obama and the media as sexists as late as … just before John McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate.  Ferraro also lets the media off the hook in this interview, which, given the ferocious nature of their attacks on Palin, strikes me as odd.  The toughest she gets on the media now is an admonition that we all have to be “sensitive” about the words we use, the most tiresome form of political correctness possible.

Ferraro does give an explanation for her shifting views.  She notes that the race is now between Republicans and Democrats, rather than two Democrats.  That’s as honest an explanation from feminists about a double standard as I’ve yet heard.

C’mon…why no posts about how Obama plagiarized the other part of those remarks from a WaPo editorial cartoon?

It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind.
What’s BO’s excuse?

This is my new take on Obama’s behavior: he loathes white women.
And Ferraro? Politics above all in the end.

Well, she had to go and BLOW IT.

Just when I was beginning to think maybe she had stumbled across some wisdom in her old age and was beginning to see the stupidity of liberal thought….SHE BLOWS IT.

You understand that to women like her it’s not about women power, it’s about abortion power.

Lies and Swift Boat politics?

Hey Obama?

What about lying about saying McCain wants troops fighting in Iraq for 100 years?

Once a die-hard Party Democrat- ALWAYS a die-hard Party Democrat.

Isn’t it amazing how that Party slaps its lackeys into line?

It never takes long for renegades to “get their minds right” does it.

I’ve never seen anything like this since “Cosa Nostra”.

CliffHanger on September 11, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Really, Sweetie? Luckily the average American woman won’t get contacted by DNC headquarters and told to get in line.

beatcanvas on September 11, 2008 at 10:52 AM

We must remember that the left places their warped ideology above all else, including country, religion, family, humanity, democracy, intellect and even good sense. It matters not what Obama does or says, as long as he champions their form of radical social behavior and extreme hedonism. Don’t look for a convert from among the fully indoctrinated, because it just can’t happen.

I have never heard this “lipstick on a pig” comment before and I’d be willing to bet most Americans haven’t, either.

I don’t care if you point to it in some dictionary as having existed since 1872 or whenever, it’s not a common phrase that comes to mind often. It’s clear what he meant and the disingenuousness of liberals to claim otherwise is just what we’ve come to expect.

As for Geraldine Ferraro… whatever. If anyone thought she was actually all for Palin and against the sexist media, well, that was naive.

amkun on September 11, 2008 at 10:53 AM

With this standard, no behavior by Barak Obama could ever be sexist when he is running against a Republican.

Therefore, her statement means nothing.

Right_of_Attila on September 11, 2008 at 10:55 AM

We’ve been hearing from Geraldine a lot lately. The woman I’d really like to hear something from about all of this is Lynne Cheney. Anyone heard an interview with her lately? I’m reading a 1995 book that she wrote–Telling the Truth: Why our culture and our country have stopped making sense and what we can do about it.

I have a lot of respect for her, and I’d love to hear her weigh in on all of it.

And Ferraro? Politics above all in the end.”

Some deep dark past resentment of his mom abandoning him? I wouldn’t doubt it, probably needs therapy.

I saw GF on Fox this week, she does say now she’s voting for Obama, but the way she said it, I would bet she doesn’t.

Liberal feminism, is just a vocal sect of a larger religion, humanism. (other sects would be communism, marxism, socialism, etc.)

Marine_Bio on September 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

This is the last stand for the Democrat party as the moral authority on feminism. If she expects to have any future in her party, Geraldine Ferraro must swallow her pride, shackle her intellect, muzzle her opinions and follow the rest of her party to the Kool-Aid punch bowl.

amkun on September 11, 2008 at 10:53 AM

No…

It’s a pretty common phrase. I’ve heard it all my life and used it more than once myself.

But I’m not buying for a minute that Barry had no clue that in using it it might be perceived as a slap at Sarah.

Maybe he took Olbie’s advice and and needed an excuse to “get angry.” Maybe it was a “trap” as some suggested the night it happened. The Left sure has en masse picked up the mantra that enough-is-enough Barry’s all about issues and McCain’s all about lipstick.

If so fair enough and it may have even been a good move. However, if it’s true that it was a completely guileless innocent remark and Barry had no clue anyone might connect the dots, then it’s official: He’s too fuggin’ stupid to be President.

The same guy that OWNS our Democrat controlled congress. The same Democrat controlled congress that opposes drilling. Should I draw dots and connect next time?

It is almost comical at the petty lies that seem to come from everybody on the left. Ferraro is the epitome of a politician. Lying to her comes as easy as breathing. O’Reilly said the lipstick remark was not directed at Sarah. Everybody in the audience sure understood it immediately. Is the arrogant one kissing up to Obama for rattling his cage?

Interesting…

She was trying to tell Bambi to look out… that just like the very prevalent over sensitivity to racism that pervades any disucsion of the failing of a “person of race”… he is now going to fall in the same category with women…

Identity politics are a b1tch aren’t they… (uh oh, was I just SEEEXXXXIIIISSSSTTTT)…

Problem is that we have to be careful not to fall too far into that trap ourselves by making false accusations about sexism, when its really not there… like this Lipstick comment… its ambibilent enough to be taken either way, and the Media, and some of us, made too big of a deal over it.

Romeo13 on September 11, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Is this further evidence Hillary is about to replace Biden? If that happened Ferraro would be dragged put of mothballs to promote her BGF to finish out the campaign. Of course she would have advanced warning.

Correct. But had a good laugh at turning the tables on these morons. We gotta always beware and never allow the media to set the narrative for our side. They’re whores.

Also, if you play with a Dem, even Ferraro, and reach across the aisle, sooner or later you’re gonna get bitten. Scorpions being scorpions after all. McCain always had a problem with that, although he’s not the one recently in love with Ferraro.

Party outranks all else for many. I believe in my country first and that is why despite my conservative views I will remain an Independent. Both parties offered good candidates when I first voted 50 years ago. I only hope that we can once again find statesmen/stateswomen who will work for our nation instead of worrying about the next election and how they can maintain or get power.

Really? I’ve heard it a lot. To me, its a cliche, if not an outright dead metaphor.
Maybe that explains why I found it so odd that so many people were getting exited about it.

Now, the plagiarism, on the other hand…
I’m sure the cartoonist is so enthralled he would never think of rebuking Obama over it, but it is a reoccurring problem with Obama, and seems tacky.

Count to 10 on September 11, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Definitely backing off. Remember, just after Palin was picked Ferraro was quoted as saying she didn’t know who she was voting for.

Then, 2 days later, she went out of her way in any interview that she was definitely voting for Obama.

Somebody had a little “chat” with her… Once again, party trumps the party of “ideology”.

My .02….I don’t think Hillary’s going anywhere until 2012. If Biden drops out, and Hillary take the VP slot, she forfeits her shot at the top slot in 2012. I don’t believe she’ll do that.

tgharris on September 11, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Too bad she didn’t vett her first running mate Mr. Zaccaro.

His financial dealings have raised questions that have hurt Ms. Ferraro politically. Mr. Zaccaro has been accused of mob ties, accusations he has denied. He was also criticized for renting space to a pornographer.

A report by a New York State organized-crime investigator says that in 1985 John A. Zaccaro, the husband of Geraldine A. Ferraro, was observed meeting and talking with Robert DiBernardo, a reputed mob figure who the authorities say ran a pornography business….Mr. DiBernardo, who was slain in 1986 at the behest of the Gambino family boss John Gotti, headed the Star Distributing Company, which law-enforcement officials identified as a major pornography supplier operating out of a building co-owned by Mr. Zaccaro and managed by his real estate brokerage, P. Zaccaro Inc., in lower Manhattan.

right2bright on September 11, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Geraldine Ferraro is like most party faithful and I never expected her to support anyone except the Democrat candidates. It shows that party affiliation means a lot more to Ms.Ferraro than her views on women. This is no surprise.

SayWhat on September 11, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I’m more disappointed that Ferraro went on the defensive for that monster in SC, Carol Fowler. Anybody who declares themselves to be pro-choice can’t possibly defend the idea that there is something wrong with choosing life and that is what Fowler did by attacking Palin for not “choosing” to abort her children. Ferraro and those of her ilk should be the first in line condemning Fowler instead of making excuses for the bitch.

Although Ferraro thinks he is a sexist, she has been taked to and told that as a “made” manpolitico she had to tow the familyparty line against all outside-ahz fore-evah!

And, she doesn’t help her BGF Hillz any by giving Mav/’Cuda even any unintended support by conyinuing to grumble about O! …I mean, how would it look for establishment feminists if the first female at the highest levels of the executive branch were not a liberal (horrors!).

I mean, they already lost the honor of the first minority Sec. State and Nat’l Security Advisor, identity politics plums, to Chimpy BusHitlerBurton and the eeeeeeeevil Rethuglicans!!!eleventy!!!

But I am a bit concerned, especially after Joey B’s statement yesterday, that this could be more fore-shadowing of “return of the Hillz”, a drama I don’t wish to see at this time-thank you…

So, like Allah, I’m a bit wary, and dialing my pessimism meter accordingly for now…

God forbid I’m right!!!eleventy!!!

RocketmanBob on September 11, 2008 at 12:08 PM

That’s too bad. I was starting to look on Geraldine as a states(wo)man and she has to admit she’s mired in party politics.

TooTall on September 11, 2008 at 12:09 PM

So ,basically Ferraro is saying the Obama was a sexists before he was not a sexist. Sexist remarks are not sexist if they are against Republican women that I do not agree with.

jerseyman on September 11, 2008 at 12:09 PM

I know I’m not saying anything original, but this whole issue is politcal correctness run amok (sp?), and it continues to move forward further into the absurd.

This hypersensitivity in terms of racism, sexism, etc. must stop.

I realize it will not, though.

asc85 on September 11, 2008 at 12:10 PM

When do we see the ad where Democrats are stating that Obama is not qualified (or less qualified) the McCain and Hillary is more qualified than Biden? In their own words.

jerseyman on September 11, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Suppose old Joe B. suddenly got a little sick and Hillary had to step in…
Well, Ferraro can’t be putting down Obama if suddenly Hillary shows up on the ticket.
Remember Obama has no problems throwing anybody under the bus…including Joe Biden, who seems to think Hillary would have been a better choice. Out on the grinding campaign trail Joe is realizing how good, in his 66+ years of age, he has it in his safe Senate seat.

albill on September 11, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Her explanation makes perfect sense when seen thru the prism of raw politics. Ferraro has been watching the Annointed One slamming his own head on the pavement for weeks now and she does not want to be ostracized from the finer salons of Demville for appearing to pile on He Whose Name May Not Be Spoken Except in Messianic Reverance.

Prediction: Gerry starts tagging Gov Palin sooner instead of later for all kinds of crimes real and imagined.

Mike D. on September 11, 2008 at 12:28 PM

The party leaders have reached out to her, and asked her to stop going after Barry. My guess is that she will, and make occassional comments like here; but won’t go out of her way to convince others to vote for him.

Rick on September 11, 2008 at 12:29 PM

I was expecting her to soften from her initial stance. As a Fox contributor, she would be too valuable to the Republicans were she to maintain her initial (honest) reactions about the sexist treatment of Palin.

Ferraro does give an explanation for her shifting views. She notes that the race is now between Republicans and Democrats, rather than two Democrats. That’s as honest an explanation from feminists about a double standard as I’ve yet heard.

Unlike Joe Lieberman, Geraldine has no spine. I guess she doesn’t like to lunch alone.

Y-not on September 11, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Like Joe Lieberman, she’s been savaged on the lefty blogs, and she doesn’t want to be the fat kid in “Lord of the Flies”, I’m guessing.

Michelle Malkin. After that, I quit paying any attention to him. To me he is just another empty meaningless talking head.

WildBillK on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Good catch, Ed. When I watched it, all I could think was that Geraldine had suddenly developed a mouth full of mush!
That, together with the effusive Biden praise of Hillary, points to an attempted policy of raprochement between the camps. I think Clinton invited Obama to lunch the other day because he sensed the opportunity to cut a deal.

Exactly what he and Hillary want now is whatever it is. Supreme Court? Could be. But win or lose, the Clintons want things. And one thing the do not want is for Obama to run again if he loses this year.

But clearly what Obama and Biden both want right now is for Hillary to jump in with her claws, and mess up Palin. If she does it, it’s not sexist. Watch for a ramping up of Hillary Clinton criticism of Palin in the coming days.

Trochilus on September 11, 2008 at 5:16 PM

That was a mighty quick trip to/from her re-education camp – Obama must have put Ferraro through the express line.
