“Her greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she is a woman. The Republican party’s cynical calculation that because she has a womb and makes lots and lots of babies (and drives them to school! wow!) she speaks for the women of America, and will capture their hearts and their votes, has driven thousands of real women to take to their computers in outrage. She does not speak for women; she has no sympathy for the problems of other women, particularly working class women.”

The (figuratively, GOP) elephant in the room here is that everyone knows Palin is Presidential material, and that’s the real vetting going on here, and the real, if unstated fear among those on the left. That’s why the left is so nuts right now. It’s not just that she could cost Obama the election. They know they have a nascent Reagan-in-heels who could conceivably keep the WH in GOP hands for the next 12 years.
They’re in a deranged panic.
Purple Fury on September 11, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Evidently, Miss Doniger thinks “real” icons of womanhood should behave like the Code Pinko cows who tried to stampede the the stage at the Republican Convention in St. Paul.
And positing Joe Biden as the model of a devout Catholic politician?
Newsweek needs to put Miss Doniger out to pasture.

aquaviva on September 11, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Newsflash for this nut. Whether or not one is a “real” woman is not determined by your political ideology, but rather by your biological status. If you were born with a vagina you are a real woman. Although this loon demeans it appropriate to call a biological woman, “not a real woman”, I would bet everything I own she is totally at ease bestowing the title of “real woman” on any biological male who claims to be a woman trapped in a man’s body even if he/she is not concerned with reproductive rights, because let’s face it that is the liberal politically correct worldview.

Wendy Doniger is a chick? Couldn’t tell it by the picture. She’s the kind of “working gal” who hates the Sarah Palins of the world for having it all. Palin has a family and a life. Just guessing here but my money is on the idea that Doniger has cats she gives cute names and dresses up for parties.

Rightwingsparkle on September 11, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Ahh, what the heck, I’ll repeat what I said on the other post.
Hmmm….
…so Ms. Doniger, what are you views on Jesus who was a person with political power, took His theology out in public and ‘inflicted’ his private religious views on other people?
BTW – I’m not trying to compare Gov. Palin with Jesus, just showing the complete absence of logical rational thought from a professor from a divinity school.
BBTW – Isn’t Ms. Doniger, by writing this column, a person with ‘political power’ who is taking her theology out in public and ‘inflicting’ her private religious views on others?
BBBTW – Pointing out the hypocrisy, illogical arguments and outright dementia in articles like this is akin to shooting fish in a barrel.
Religious_Zealot on September 11, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Most of the points she makes to claim that Palin is not a “real woman” have been debunked, and yet they still manage to make it into the WaPo. Amazing. Utterly and completely amazing.

Mr_Magoo on September 11, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Wendy Doniger has got it backwards, it is she that doesn’t speak for women. The real point is Sarah Palin isn’t just speaking for women, she is speaking for all of us men and women alike. Her message and ideas are what is important. Not if she has a womb. The real problem is, is that her ideas are so different from Wendy Donigers and all the other women who think they are so relevant just because they are liberal. The fact that she is a woman is of no importance, it’s who she is and what she’s done that are important. Sarah Palin has real ideas, real accomplishments and a real family. These are not reasons to hate her. They are reasons to love her.

I believe I understand the rage now. America has been forcefully married to these feminists as the standard bearer for women vis a vis the media. The N.O.W. types realize this marriage is tenuous at best. Sarah Palin is the dreaded “other woman” with whom America is having an affair in the minds of these man-hating N.O.W. types. These N.O.W. types believe they have done all the work, but Sarah is getting all the attention.

“Real” woman?…so let me get this straight…I also have a womb, but I guess I am also not a woman, because I don’t believe in the liberal ideas of abortion, and am also a Republican. I wonder if the “real” women of the democratic party could tell me what I am , surely not a man…an “it” maybe? Give me a break, what a ridiculous argument.

In a nation of 325,000,000 people more than half of which are female, “thousands” sounds about right. Like that part about taking to their computers, too. Their outrage generates just enough energy for them to put down the remote, get up from the couch, and walk over to their keyboards. Just like me, I suppose, but it doesn’t sound like a very impressive expression of “outrage.” Well, thank goodness she and her ilk have a nice online outlet for their rage, otherwise they’d be out blocking traffic with their papier mache puppet parades. I can’t believe the Post printed it. Well, it is in their “religion” section, which maybe 5 people read when it isn’t being linked for its outrageousness.

As a woman, and not Fugly, I just love that word. I have to say I know of many unattractive female friends of mine who despise attractive women. Not to mention the working environment with other women and how alliances break down along lines of attractiveness. I don’t know if it is instinctual or what, but the hostility is always simmering under the surface.

She isn’t going to do that, she wants to run again in 2012. That ain’t happening if Obama wins. Hill will say the bare minimum that she’s obliged to say, but she isn’t going to go out of her way to knock down Palin.
doubleplusundead on September 11, 2008 at 11:03 PM
From the author’s bio on the University of Chicago Div School site:
Wendy Doniger’s research and teaching interests revolve around two basic areas, Hinduism and mythology. Her courses in mythology address themes in cross-cultural expanses; her courses in Hinduism cover a broad spectrum that, in addition to mythology, considers literature, law, gender, and psychology. Cross-cultural offerings have included courses about death, dreams, evil, horses, sex, and women.
Yep, I’d say that qualifies her to be the judge of who is a “real woman” /sarc off. Where do they find these people?

Pam on September 11, 2008 at 11:07 PM
As I recall, the feminist term of pro-choice, meant that a woman had a real choice. Suddenly, however, there is no choice involved; a real feminist must by definition be pro-abortion.

Man, I got lucky there, because it seems I’m in the only group in America who has this amazing perk.

Palin strikes fear in the heart of feminist because she is representative of the up until now, silent majority of working women, mothers, and wives in this country. The only reason the feminist storm troopers have been able to establish any base of power is because normal American women were to busy taking care of business to pay attention to the fact that they weren’t representing our values, aspirations, and concerns. NOw that Palin has shaken us from our slumber, they fear a takeover of the tag feminist which will totally negate the man hating, raise your sons like they are girls, kill your baby anytime, anywhere agenda they have been pushing for 40 years.

It’s like having the power to decide which life has and doesn’t have worth, is or isn’t convenient to bring into this world.
Apparently, the person quoted above thinks that they are that person.
If that is the case, I apologize. You’re powerful, and should not be questioned. If, as is more likely, you’re not that person, woe betide you.

Then she said she had never read a truer statement. I said really? You believe that. She said you don’t? Then she went on to say not just white men but all men oppress women and on and on. I want to know where all these oppressive men are. It’s not like I haven’t been exposed to men. I mean my Dad was man, my husband is man and my son is a man. Not to mention the thousands of men I have run into over the course of my life. Not a one ever tried to oppress me.
