Politico: She “held her own”

Okay, then. If this is the CW the media’s settled on, ain’t going to be me who objects. Whew!
Today was a pretty low-key day, politically, so neither candidate gained or lost too much ground. But Sarah Palin confronted a major obstacle in her interview with Charlie Gibson – her first one-on-one as a vice presidential candidate – and appears to have held her own. It remains to be seen whether her opponents will find useful fodder in this interview [Errrr. -- ed.], but at the very least she didn’t deviate from the campaign message. McCain also held a successful event this morning in Pennsylvania – in a largely non-political news cycle, he didn’t need to do much else.
Actually, the left thinks she did deviate from it, but if so, she only ended up in the same place as Bush and Obama. Whew again!
Maybe we should stop focusing on interviews with news anchors and start focusing on interviews with people who can swing votes. Exit question one: Could/should have McCain’s handlers prepared her better? The path to ruin runs through too much rote memorization, warns TNR. I wonder if Team Maverick neglected to brief her on the Bush Doctrine on the assumption that she surely must have picked it up sometime over the past six years and therefore could handle a question on that herself. Imagine their horror tonight in realizing they assumed wrong, and that there may be other basic knowledge gaps that need filling — fast. Exit question two: Having stumped the band with that one, will Gibson turn around tomorrow and go for the throat by quizzing her about other basic stuff? The risk is that his time is limited and if she’s prepared it’ll turn into a softball game. The reward is that if she isn’t prepared, look out.

She’ll be fine. One thing about Palin is that she consistently exceeds expectations.

Go Sarah!
xplodeit on September 11, 2008 at 9:46 PM
For one, the McCain camp should have insisted the unedited video/transcript be made available.
Valiant on September 11, 2008 at 9:47 PM
They shouldn’t have allowed Charlie Gibson to be the one who did the interview.
Next interview should be Brit Hume.
Sakaki on September 11, 2008 at 9:47 PM
I think that is the good Idea. Let Palin avoid the media and let them follow her around slobbering wanting more.
The less Palin is on TV the better. Not because I dont think she will do well but because her lack of appearances will generate interest to be exploited.
People will be titilated by the Press ravenously following her around that they will go to the rallies to see her and hear her.
The Press is as much a tool to be used by ignoring it as by utilisizing it.
William Amos on September 11, 2008 at 9:47 PM
I don’t know what everyone is thinking, the bush doctrine is obviously defined COMPLETELY differently from a conservative than from a liberal. I would have asked him what he was asking myself.
Could you see the headlines if she answered yes?
“PALIN AGREES WITH BUSH DOCTRINE”
yeah, that would have went over well.
TTheoLogan on September 11, 2008 at 9:47 PM
Relax AP.
Sarah is at her best when she is connecting directly with the American people. Dont get so caught up in what the leftist spin will be.. .because the average voter will listen to her and make his/her own decision and ignore (or even buck) the spin.
As to her preparation. Look, this was her coming out party. She was cautious where she had to be to avoid dropping into obvious potholes laid out by Gibson. Once she has this set of interviews done, she will be better prepared for the next one and the next one. She will only get more and more impressive as time goes on, so dont worry if she didnt walk on water this first time out.
She did just fine in the face of obnoxious baiting by schoolmarm Charlie.

Good job on the jump to conclusions. Or perhaps I should say casting your imagination as reality.

She’s running for vice president, not Jeopardy contestant.
Jim Treacher on September 11, 2008 at 9:48 PM
Reagan went directly to the American people. Palin has the skills to do the same which is why they hate her.
Valiant on September 11, 2008 at 9:49 PM
I really did not think it was all that bad. At times, Gibson was condesending to her which should help her overcome some of her off moments. I only see her improving and Gibson looking down at her, interupting her, and asking question he has not even asked Obama will not sit well with true independent voters.
Not going to hurt the base in any way.
azcop on September 11, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Charlie is still hurt after getting beat up by the libs for asking BO’s very first tough question, so he took it out on poor Sarah. She did fine.
jgapinoy on September 11, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Someone said today, Bob Beckel maybe, that she needed to make each answer long in order to limit the number of questions he could ask. I still say let Sarah be Sarah. They are going to wind up making her look like Bush when he is overprepared. Her instinct is the right one. Let her use it.
Sue on September 11, 2008 at 9:49 PM
But Jim, she did not know what the BUSH DOCTRINE WAS!!!!1!
She had to ask for clarification.

elduende on September 11, 2008 at 9:50 PM
BTW, I am sure McCain’s people are busy trying to find whether Obama has ever been asked these foreign policy questions and what HIS answers were.
If he hasnt, they can ask loudly why someone running for president the last TWO YEARS hasnt been asked what a VP Candidate for the last two weeks was asked.
And if he did answer, lets rip his answers apart too.
There is no reason to just be the MSM’s punching bag.

OBAMA PLANS SHARPER TACK… DEVELOPING…
I’m curious about this, though. Sharper tack? I guess the dull nail hasn’t been working out so well.
McCain is gonna need to go on the offensive more and keep getting inside Obama’s head.
Here’s the real fallout though.
this interview might take palin out of obama’s head. And make him focus on mccain. Obama v Palin works well for us. Obama v McCain. I’m not sure.

Thanks for that. Gibson really angered me with his pompous Obama like attitude. Reagan dealt with that a lot of times and the press despised him but his was and still is beloved by the American people.

AbaddonsReign on September 11, 2008 at 9:53 PM
I’m fond of the interpretation of her Bush Doctrine gaffe that it was some brilliant Rovian tactic that if she were to come up with a question about the Bush admin, to feign ignorance. That way if the left wanted to attack her on it, they would be attacking her on her ignorance of the policies of the administration that they despise. It is a perfect place to make a gaffe.
jimmy the notable on September 11, 2008 at 9:54 PM
This just in: Sarah Palin is normal.
She didn’t start speaking in tongues, butcher a moose while wearing a bikini or claim that dinosaurs caused the downfall of the Assyrian Empire.
Those non-contextual questions are stupid as they are phrased in a way that almost demands a black or white answer. Such questions only feed the paranoia of people who watched Bourne Identity too many times and actually believe that wars are initiated by pressing a big, red button.

That is what 90% of people will remember from this. Gibson had the NERVE to say that…after interviewing politicians for years? It wasn’t like she wasn’t answering the question either. Clearly she was saying we would go into Pakistan if needed. Duh.

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 9:56 PM
I totally disagree. Totally. It just feeds a soon-to-be-dead theme she’s not ready for prime time and that she is a great, but local, player. That is horrible advice.
Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 9:56 PM
I forgot what exactly I read(I think time mag), but I remember cringed whenever reading how they were preping her. I got the impression that they were just going to get her a couple of advisors and have her memorize Team McCain’s agenda like a script. Team McCain needs to put her in contact with sympathetic conservatives who are tired of bush and aren’t too keen on where McCain’s going himself…
ninjapirate on September 11, 2008 at 9:56 PM
I am very open to criticizing people I like, and I think Governor Palin did much better than the average.
Best of all, she didn’t look smooth and slick like she was all glitter and no diamond.
Loxodonta on September 11, 2008 at 9:57 PM
The real KEY is going to be the VP debate in October.
Sarah doesnt have to be the policy wonk of all policy wonks… she just has to demonstrate confidence, likeability and a set of coherent policy rationales.
The american people will be able to judge her for herself then and also judge how the media is treating her vs how they treat Biden and the dems.
That will be her next big test, and all the interviews before hand are just rehearsals for the big event… along with the inevitable leftist spin on her that much of america has aparently tuned out already.
Always Right on September 11, 2008 at 9:57 PM
I wouldn’t go that far. Considering how seemingly in the tank he was for Obama…I’d say he’s basically ratings-driven. He knows how popular Palin is, and simply wants traffic.

Must have been watching a different clip. I never saw where she said she didn’t know what the “Bush Doctrine” was. She smiled (knowing he was setting her up) and pretty much asked him what he thought it meant, or what exactly he was talking about before she answered. Maybe a weak answer, but not game changing.
Vigilante on September 11, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Amen. But McCain is still under the delusion that the media are his friends.
Valiant on September 11, 2008 at 9:59 PM
There is no bigger fan of Palin than me, and quite frankly, I was extremely disappointed. My wife and I both felt like every single word was measured, as if she were trying to remember everything that had been coached. I’m not sure of this, but I wonder if she would have performed better if she had simply talked her talk, including the possible answer of “I don’t know”. OK, yes the media would have eaten her alive for that, but the rote memorization killer her.
I just got off Kos and HuffPo, and they are skewering her on not knowing the “Bush Doctrine”. If that’s the worst, I’ll say that she survived.
Hopefully, she’ll be much more comfortable in the next segments, which are not so far out of her element.

Here’s my prediction: This interview will lead to a dip in the polls for McCain. Not because she did bad, but because she was as partisan as she’s ever been on a national stage. Talking about God, talking about Islamic extremists…the moderates will remember…”Oh yeah, she’s an appeal to the base, and now I see why.”

To think that her handlers didn’t cover the “Bush Doctrine” with her is a bit out there. I’m sure they covered all the bases just fine. It’s the way in which it was phrased that cause the outcome. Gibson wanted to play a gotcha game, and when she asked for specification. He refused to specify for her, and told her to guess, very condescending.
But yes… she didn’t slam it out of the park, and she didn’t strike out. She did fine, and it is a good first interview so far.

Hey, it sorta works! If you ignore AP’s compulsive-bordering-on-contrived-pessimistic commentary and just look at the links (good or bad news), you get a better picture! Some things raise serious concerns, of course, and that’s right and good. But at least you avoid AP’s latest drug binge.
If that’s not how AP was in the commentary here, I wouldn’t know. I didn’t read it, just the links.

The Associated Press is already pushing the “Sarah Would Go to War With Russia!” angle — it’s the headline for all their reports on the interview. I know her actual answer was totally innocuous, but they’re getting traction with it.
She needs to be prepped like a lawyer’s client who’s about to be deposed, and she should know not to get lured into engaging in speculation about hypothetical future scenarios. Sheesh.

And say: “WTF is that?” Non-starter.
Jim Treacher on September 11, 2008 at 10:06 PM
In real life, she’ll learn by being in office, seeing things first-hand but not herself being in the driver’s seat. Plus she’ll have lots of advisors.
It was Biden who said the presidency was not something to learn while on the job. If Obama gets in, that’s what he’ll have to do (and he does not like criticism). If McCain gets in, Palin will end up with 4 or 8 years of experience and observation.

SOLID.
And YES, her biggest strength will be talking directly to the American people.
Sapwolf on September 11, 2008 at 10:07 PM
Sarah detected a trap in the “Bush Doctrine” question, which shows good preparation.
Those who think she should have volunteered a definition either lack debate experience or fail to consider the traps any difference in definition would have created.
Compared to the steam of babble typical of Obama, the “blizzard of words” remark by Gibson is absurd.
Politico generally gets it right: Sarah held her own.
In contrast, Gibson will be considered a lightweight by the leftards.

gator70 on September 11, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Andy McCarthy, whose opinion I greatly respect, seems to be okay with how Sarah Palin handled the whole Bush Doctrine question:
That said, campaigns are not won and lost based on how experts understand issues, but based on how the average American voter understands issues. So what matters is if the average voter thought she did okay, not knowledgeable people like Andy McCarthy.
From my discussions with family, friends and coworkers, they all have a general assumption of the Bush Doctrine to be “pre-emptive war” and always allude to the “with us or with the terrorists” remark. My understanding of the Bush Doctrine is that it is simply that any nation which harbors terrorists or helps terrorists is on our sh*t list and we could therefore hold them to account for aiding terrorism.
As you stated AllahPundit, people have been talking about the Bush Doctrine, or at least their understanding of what it is, for years now, after the “with us or with the terrorists” and the ‘if you harbor or aid terrorists, you are with the terrorists’ warning given by Bush years ago. I would expect anyone asked about the Bush Doctrine to talk about these basic principles. Unfortunately, all politicians, including Sarah Palin, are not going to give a straight answer to a question, for fear of having the answer being twisted. Considering that is all that has been happening the last couple weeks since Sarah Palin has been on the campaign trail – mass media lying, twisting, distorting, smearing anything she says – it’s not surprising for her to try to carefully frame her answers so as not to have anything distorted.

Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Here’s the elephant in the living room:
She’s getting this harsh treatment and our microscopic analysis because both left and right understand that she’s almost certainly going to be the 45th President of the United States.
It’s very unusual to know this so early so it’s a bit unfair to her. It’s sort of like hammering on LeBron James’ high school game when he’s about to be drafted and declaring him not yet ready to win the NBA championship. Uh yeah, that’s completely missing the point. She’s a game changer and we’re a nation of wimps if we’re scared to bring her up to VP in favor of “just some guy.”
No matter her flaws, she has already hit the courts, got inside the head of America’s “Kobe Bryant” and made him look like he should retire. The Dems act like she isn’t even fit for the WNBA, simply because they don’t want her in the league for the next 16 years schooling their best players.

Sarah did great for the first interview. Quote from NYT article about the interview.
Mr. Gibson, who sat back in his chair and wriggled his foot impatiently, had the skeptical, annoyed tone of a university president who agrees to interview the daughter of a trustee, but doesn’t believe she merits admission
bobsunshine on September 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Palin will be fine. Lets talk about Obama’s Maoist plan for compulsory govt service for high school and college students. That Cultural Revolution worked so well the first time around…
allahallahoxenfree on September 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM
That said, this could be a sign that the mass media smears are getting to her and the McCain campaign, as they are now getting careful about how she responds to questions. She probably should have been ready for the media distortions of her “God’s plan” remark about the war effort and had a comeback prepared, including putting Gibson in his place and showing him up by providing him her exact quote, saying she was praying that we were doing God’s work, not that the war effort was a holy war. That would have changed the entire mood of the interview in her favor and exposed yet another smear attempt. But apparently, she was not ready for it and couldn’t remember her exact words to throw in his face. Missed opportunity.
Michael in MI on September 11, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Why not just wait for the media/leftist hyperventilation over this interview?
Palin could have given a masterful, perfectly-stated response to each question and the libs would still find a way to beat her over the head with the answers.
Was Palin perfect, no way, but she held her own. The media will of course pursue some route that will eventually find them criticizing her clothes or her voice or her family or her “hickness”. Obama will continue to compare himself to her while Biden tries to figure out how not to say something stupid.
So I say let it percolate for a while.

She is right to ask in what respect he means the Bush Doctrine. President Bush hasn’t even been following it the past few years. So, is it still the “Bush” Doctrine?

At a presidential forum at Columbia U., in NYC, McCain noted that the current tone of the campaign is largely due to Obama refusing to participate in townhall forums to discuss issues.
The McCain campaign needs to run this theme in an ad, with video of Obama claiming he would debate any time and any place (before he declined), and the recent Obama whining about the need to discuss the “real issues”. A strong challenge to townhalls is a good close.
Then schedule a specific townhall meeting and invite Obama to participate. Run more ads from the townhall, if Obama does not show up.

Great idea! Play the line as Gibson read it. Then her first response, then the “Exact Quote” line, then play the whole thing. It will make the MSM look like the biased ones they are.

McCain did break out the funny (again) today.
He offered Obama a cabinet position. I guess McCain feels like Obama is qualified to be in the cabinet, but not president is the message here.
Win McCain LOL

Nope Dan Rather threw a temper tantrum on Bush the elder about it actually.

Before 1980? I’d have to look. Doesn’t matter though, the comparison was Lox’s, not yours. Reagan was on the scene for 16 years! before he was elected. She’s obviously not in the same situation.

If she had pulled out a deer slayer and stuck it in his thigh, that would have been better.

Hehehehehehehe. Next shot you see Charlie strung upside down from a tree as Palin “processes” him.
Media demands for an interview would immediately cease.

I was dreading watching after reading some of the reviews here. I watched clips with hoosierdaddy and we were both very impressed. He was rewinding and saying “Look at her…she knows what’s up when he asks this.” He also said “Charlie is an ass” or some such. This was not an interview. It was a visit to the principal’s office to find out who did what when. He did not treat her as an equal, but as someone whom HE needed to educate. Also, the editing looked like an 8th grader did it. Actually, an 8th grader nerd could’ve done better.
I think she did just fine. Certainly better than the Community Organizer who stuttered his way into advocating the ROTC be allowed back into Columbia. Code Pink has to be on suicide watch.

You guys are splitting and re-splitting hairs here. McCain and Palin are genuine. The American public can see that. The media can see that and it scares them, hence the corrupt biased reporting. They will both do fine. McCain will win in November just like Reagan beat Obama’s idol Carter in 1980.

Didn’t she just send her kid off to war, today?
Wonder what the difference is between being able to recall the details of the Bush Doctrine and just having been kicked in the gut by it.

YOU ARE WAY WRONG on this one.
I’d give you a buzz down.
