Open thread: Palin on ABC; Update: Gibson distorts Palin’s Iraq prayer; Update: Video of Iraq prayer comments included in segment

We’re still an hour away from World News Tonight, but ABC’s already starting to tease quotes so we’re likely to see web video before they go on the air. Here’s your thread to comment. Currently bannering at their homepage:
EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY
TV Newser has other quotes but so far they’re the most platitudinous platitudes. Stand by for updates. Exit question: When is it appropriate to mix medications?
Update: From what I understand, they’ll run part of the interview on the 6:30 news, then the rest on Nightline at 11:35. Use this thread for both. They’ll do another interview tomorrow and that’ll run mostly on 20/20 at 10 p.m., with other portions possibly to run on WNT and Nightline.
Update: Here’s a partial transcript. Good to see Charlie did his homework:
GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?
PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.
GIBSON: Exact words.
PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.
But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.
That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.
GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”
Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. Here’s my post on the subject from last Thursday. Read it and see just how egregious the distortion here is.
Update: They’re also exaggerating what she said with their teaser, which makes it sound like she wants to unilaterally guarantee the security of Russian satellites. Read the excerpt linked above and you’ll see she simply means admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO and bringing them under the aegis of the all-for-one principle, which is McCain’s position. In the meantime, here’s what she says we should do: “It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.”
Update: Two clips are already up in case the transcript’s not good enough. Here and here.
Update: This doesn’t excuse them entirely since only viewers who were paying extremely close attention will have noticed the distortion, but ABC did show the actual 15-second video of her Iraq prayer.

What part of accent do you all not understand. People say words differently depending on where they are from. Pittsburg is said to be Pitt-burg by some. Tennis shoes are said to be tenner shoes by others. It is local accents. I think the nuclear is one thing that has made bush closer to the people than other presidents. Some of his mannerisms and speech are wrong but the pronuciation of words is from his accent and location not lack of education.

So Charlie Gibson’s lack of preparation, or dishonesty, is being shown by his own employer? Priceless. The McCain people can show Charlie his own network’s video to prove their point….Not to mention how it will play on You Tube.

Clips I saw posted on ABC, Gibson seemed uncomfortable, Palin seemed in charge.
There no face clips of Palin. Very strange. Never saw anything like that before.

No, she made it very clear that she prays that we are on God’s side.

You are welcome. I had actually written something similar to what you wrote but chose not to send it. Believe me, I was just as angry as you.
This is ridiculous and if the campaign allows her to be interviewed with such lousy editing in the future, they deserve the end result. O’Reilly’s interview with Obama was done professionally and was edited perfectly. The chopping and timing of this one was ludicrous! I hope ABC gets bad feedback about that aspect.

Now that you mention it, I noticed the same thing. She was definitely not her relaxed self… but who could blame her with Gibson treating her like some high school kid.
Total lack of respect on Gibson’s part. He’d better not walk around any woods while he’s in AK. Might be mistaken for a moose by a local.
There was also the camera angle. They tended to shoot from a height, looking down and Gibson on an up angle.

I think she knew exactly what the Bush Doctrine was. Gibson did not have to explain it to her, he just did it anyway because she failed to walk into his trap.
The truth is there are times when Barack Obama sounds like he supports the Bush Doctrine {when he is trying to be tough} but he would never admit to supporting it.

lorien1973 on September 11, 2008 at 7:41 PM
This was a set-up that she avoided like a pro. Look at it this way all good salesmen try to get you saying yes to softball questions “do you think you are ready to lead, do you think you are ready to be president” Gibson was confrontational in demanding yes answers hoping above hope to get a yes on the big ones ” do you agree with the Bush doctrine” and she rightly answered which part?
She cannot be pigeon holed into the same as Bush which is what this was desinged to do. That and force her to say she was for invading Pakistan thus letting zero off the hook and making her look foolish. She hit that one out of the park and the religious war question was out of the stadium.

Just finished watching; she did just fine… These interviews are going to get ugly following this performance. The Liberal critters in the media will start throwing sucker punches at Sarah at the very least. These people are going to pull out all stops before months end, in an all our effort to get Sarah to give them something they can feed off of.
What’s important here folks, is that Americans demand the same interviews and treatment with Obama & Biden. No soft balls as we go on from here. Sarah will handle herself just fine, of that I have no worries. The Liberal Media must be forced to employ their treasured “fairness doctrine” format, giving each candidate equal treatment.
Personally, I don’t think they can pull it off. These nutters will implode by end of month, as they fail in their attempts to get Sarah to bleed.

What more do you want in a leader….when the call comes she did not blink…she answered the call to serve…she did not blink….I’m sorry but that phrase just keeps going around in my head…like a bee buzzing….It was so strong, steadfast, it raised goosebumps on my arms when I heard it….It soo captured her persona.
She did not blink…when faced with a life changing option she stood up to it and accepted the responsibility…when faced with a DS baby she did not blink…when her daughter was pregent she did not blink…when her son joined the army…she did not blink…when faced with a speech of a life time…she did not blink…when faced with a hostilepress she did not blink…when faced with a last second shot for the championship she did not blink…when faced with all of lifes challanges she did not blink…

She does great, but agree on total hack job.
Notice the camera angles. The camera, on the abc.go.news site use only one camera angle, and it is not even 90 degrees to Palin, but more like 70-80 degrees giving little side profile and more of her back.
Very setup to render the full view of Charlie but cast the guest as visually irrelevant. Notice on their interviews of Bill and BO and Hill…..full frontal, and usually two camera angles. Total hatchet job. He is clearly flummoxed with her ‘holy war’ parry to Lincoln and the rebut regarding her son. Clearly will be comparisons to BO, but fares better on foreign policy experience to BO and that is the wrong comparison for the Dems.
What prompted them to use ABC anyway? Fox dominates and you could have really bolixed up BO with an interview with O’Reilly right after his own. Talk about the wrong comparison.

I do understand accents and that some people pronounce words differently. I don’t care how she says ‘nuclear,’ but the left has used Bush’s pronunciation of the word to paint him as an uneducated rube. We have enough to do dealing with the stuff they’re making up this time around, we don’t need to deal with recycled smears too.

If she had been to knowledgeable of the Bush Doctrine, I think there would have been the already worn argument about McCain/Palin being the third Bush term. A lot of this stuff is going to be no win and I think we will all agree that a Republican administration is not going to get anything but a hostile interview.

Gibson was to generalized. On top of that

All the Alaskans (4) I ever met had an Alaskan accent, and so does Governor Palin. It’s not very pronounced. Something in between Canadian and Appalachian and Maine, but much, much more gentle in it’s twang. I love the Governor’s voice and accent.

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 7:45 PM
I honestly did not think that Palin seemed defensive or hunched over or anything else. People are paying too much attention to unimportant stuff. If anything she was trying to appear serious and strong. Not like some air head.
She did good. She did better than Obama has done in most his interviews by far.

the web’s camera angle was different than the one on ABC news. the ABC news showed her face. I got two totally different impressions from those videos. when they showed her face she was strong resoluted….when they showed her from the side/back she was hunched over/defensive. Amazing really Never really thought about the impact of a camera angle…gives truth to that “best side” stuff I guess. Either way the words in both shots totally came across as strong and powerful. Charlie Gibson’s miffed and snippy behavior was actually peculiar and hard to watch. It was apparent that he was gunning for Sarah Palin and attempting to embarrass her. He failed and he knew it.
Palin did a spectacular job responding to his questions. Gibson was incapable of flustering her. She took her time and responded slowly, completely and concisely. Another win for the knowledgeable and well-prepared Sarah Palin.

that was defensive. she was not relaxed. and she was mad as hell.

fossten on September 11, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Haven’t read all these pages, but quick reaction:
She blew the ‘Bush Doctrine’ question. Everyone knows it refers to making war pre-emptively, but it seemed that she didn’t; she seemed lost. Her response when he explained the doctrine salvaged her, though: we have to react to an imminent threat.
Gibson’s questions on supporting an Israeli attack on Iran and crossing Pakistan’s border were basically unanswerable. Sarah revealed her inexperience by not giving the diplomatic answer: you have to evaluate the situation as it develops, and remain flexible; you can’t make hard and fast rules about hypotheticals. And Israel is more than a ‘friend’; she is an ally.
Sarah did very well by citing Lincoln on the “God’s side” question.

I watched both parts of the ABC News interview. Yes, it was more of a quiz. Gibson came off as the Devil tempting whoever and Sarah seemed to just keep him at bay and not fall for any of the traps he is hoping to get on her. She also did it with strength and came off as a leader.
She was condident, articulate, and frankly, I give her a B+/A- which was better than I expected. I’m staying up late to catch her on Nightline. She was impressive.
Can you imagine how much better she will be in another few months, etc.?
It is VERY tough for women to exude strength without seeming to be over the top or too weak. Sarah hit the balance very well. Given the obvious attempt to snare her, and the fact it wasn’t close, this will come out as a winning opportunity.
Now, can anybody really believe that first time Obama could have handled that? He can’t even handle BOR without touching him after how many years/months he has been running for President?
Sarah did good her first big interview out. However, I’ll be watching Nightline.

Or, not speaking to any member of the MSM. Pick your poison, Governor.

Thought that was polite, sorry.
I’ve known her since I was 8, been in love with her since 12. I decided when we were teens she was too meek and allowing people to walk all over her so I purposely rattled her cage to the point she lashed out at me and smacked me. I winked at her and asked her how it felt….the next day she said “good”.
I used to kickbox and was a pretty good brawler growing up it is not as though she really hurts me and it allows her to blow off steam her subordinates put into her.
It is VITAL women learn not to be anyone’s doormat, which brings me back to this interview. My wife loves Sarah, and has always because she has a spine and looks matters squarely in the face. This woman will do great things if we shield her during this trying time and foster her national presence.
regards,
sven
