Open thread: Palin on ABC; Update: Gibson distorts Palin’s Iraq prayer; Update: Video of Iraq prayer comments included in segment
posted at 5:20 pm on September 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
We’re still an hour away from World News Tonight, but ABC’s already starting to tease quotes so we’re likely to see web video before they go on the air. Here’s your thread to comment. Currently bannering at their homepage:
EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY
TV Newser has other quotes but so far they’re the most platitudinous platitudes. Stand by for updates. Exit question: When is it appropriate to mix medications?
Update: From what I understand, they’ll run part of the interview on the 6:30 news, then the rest on Nightline at 11:35. Use this thread for both. They’ll do another interview tomorrow and that’ll run mostly on 20/20 at 10 p.m., with other portions possibly to run on WNT and Nightline.
Update: Here’s a partial transcript. Good to see Charlie did his homework:
GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?
PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.
GIBSON: Exact words.
PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.
But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.
That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.
GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”
Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. Here’s my post on the subject from last Thursday. Read it and see just how egregious the distortion here is.
Update: They’re also exaggerating what she said with their teaser, which makes it sound like she wants to unilaterally guarantee the security of Russian satellites. Read the excerpt linked above and you’ll see she simply means admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO and bringing them under the aegis of the all-for-one principle, which is McCain’s position. In the meantime, here’s what she says we should do: “It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.”
Update: Two clips are already up in case the transcript’s not good enough. Here and here.
Update: This doesn’t excuse them entirely since only viewers who were paying extremely close attention will have noticed the distortion, but ABC did show the actual 15-second video of her Iraq prayer.

Team Maverick had better have an entire squad of pipe-hitters ready to slap the shit out of ABC generally and Gibby in particular for any fudges of facts, a la the God/Iraq quote.
Hard and tough questions are not a problem and any VP candidate worth they salt should be able to handle it, Governor Palin of course included.
But if ABC/Gibby go after her hammer-and-tong after they handled the Lightworker with abject kid gloves, then it will be time to call ABC out on the carpet by name and slam their fat heads into a turnbuckle.
Mike D. on September 11, 2008 at 6:52 PM
Before Gibson said the comment about being lost in her words…. she had clearly answered that the US should do anything they feel necessary to protect themselves from terrorists. Perhaps he should quit reading his notes and listen, instead.. I think these are legit questions..
.. but like many — I’ve been waiting to hear Obama (the PRESIDENTIAL nominee) answer a lot of these questions.. and any time he’s asked… he’s allowed to tap dance around it.

Well she could have asked Charlie what the Obama doctrine is ? Im sure Obama doesnt even know.

She has to temper her answers. Every politician and world leader does. For an example of a politician who doesn’t see: Joe Biden

Guys like Gibson and Obama get real tough going after her so they can feel like real men. He tried to pose as a know-it-all authority figure over her to keep her in her place that whole time. He’s on the offense with the format and he counts on her having respect for him and not slamming him back. Give this woman some more experience and she’ll eat these “men” for lunch every day.

That editing was criminal. This was not hot off the presses. They are professionals, and had plenty of time to make that look sharp and presentable. The fact that it was so choppy reflects a purpose on the part of ABC, whether it was to fit more into the news or to make her look stupid. Either way, the editors knew exactly what they were doing.

What would HILLARY’s answer have been on the Pakistan question?

I suspect she has an excellent memory. At some point in the future she will be field dressing what’s left of him.
ManlyRash on September 11, 2008 at 6:55 PM
The sloppy, choppy cutting job helps create that effect. No camera easing away slowly which would have a calming, congenial effect.

Second part is coming on – I wonder if she’ll be pissy and defensive like in the first part? :]

I refuse to watch the rest of the interview.
Reason: HORRIBLE editing and a horrible interviewer.
I have never seen such a hatchet editing job in my life.

“…of our conversation with Sarah Palin…” LOL Charlie you give yourself too much credit.
fossten on September 11, 2008 at 6:56 PM
She is doing fine, much better than 0B0mba could ever hope to. Gibson was trying to trap her into a mistake on the Bush doctrine question and she was right to be cautious! There are several parts to the Bush doctrine and an agent of change does not need to give the easy answer, yes I support the Bush doctrine and then have it shoved down her throat, see same as Bush we can’t have 8 more years of Bush.
Charlie definitely tried a gotcha in insinuating she didn’t know what it was after she did not give the yes answer he was fishing for. Charlie is trying to hunt a hunter and is failing, making him look bad not her.

Ooh… I thought she knocked the last segment out of the park. Or am I biased?
Pasalubong on September 11, 2008 at 6:58 PM
They just played that clip about a mission from God on tv. What a shit Gibson is. How anyone can think the media isnt biased when someone at his level is still repeating crap like that is beyond me.
aikidoka on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Part of politics is the ability to avoid gotcha questions in a smooth and convincing way so that the listener doesn’t know that you’ve essentially said nothing. Senators are very good at this.
But don’t denigrate it too much. It’s also a very important skill to have. There was no way of answering the question about attacking bases in Pakistan in a satisfactory way. It’s an answer that requires diplomatic skill.
Look, I love Sarah Palin, but she’s going to have to be able to deal with this level of scrutiny. If Gibson was rough on her, well that’s his job. She’s asking us to elect her as Vice President.
Now from what I saw, she seemed aggressive and defensive on several of these points. I didn’t have any problem with the content of her answers. I agree with a lot of what she said; but she didn’t say it well.
PackerBronco on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Well, God seemed to be given short-shrift by ABC news.
She came off well, though. Can’t wait for tonight. Maybe Charlie will lose some of his “got this stick in my butt” grimacing.
Tennman on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
So let me get this straight. All week, the media has taken deserved criticism for its treatment of Palin and Charlie Gibson decided the best approach to take with her was condescending old man complete with nose-glasses?
Might not have been the best decision there, Chuck.
Slublog on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
I liked the way he looked down his nose at her. As if I’m superior to you.
I only saw the last part, about God. That was okay; but I’m not a big believer in the “this is a mission from god” thing.
lorien1973 on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Gibson is down for the count .Palin wins
thmcbb on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
I thought she did very well. No gaffes, did not fall into any traps, and answered very honestly. When asked if she had ever met a world leader she simply said “no”. I bet Obama would have spun it and not given such a direct answer.
I think this will go over well with the general populance.
nemecizer on September 11, 2008 at 6:59 PM
That was horribly chopped up. They should have taken 1 or 2 questions out and let it flow better. That was like listening to an old record with scratches. Do better, ABC.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on September 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM
The last segment convinced me that they edited the heck out of the interview. He quoted her out of context and then edited out her response setting him straight. Then they put in further elaberation or even an answer to a different comment by him. I hope the mccain camp filmed or taped the whole thing in it’s entirety.
peacenprosperity on September 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM
Actually, Sarah came off quite well there. It was Gibson who sounded like an a$$. It wasn’t a real smart question for him to ask to begin with, in terms of national security. The Jihadists have declared a Holy War. Does Charlie want to make the war on terror harder and more dangerous by justifying what they have said?
Connie on September 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM
That was a pretty lame interview. They were clearly trying to play gotcha games with her, and she didn’t step into the trap, but she didn’t handle it well either. She needs to practice.

Beo on September 11, 2008 at 7:01 PM
She did really well in the second part about “God’s plan”. She came off as very confident.
She just needs to spend more time on foreign policy with the Bushies. Her answers weren’t the problem, by the way, it was just how she came off. She needs to exude a similar level of confidence as she did in the second part.
amkun on September 11, 2008 at 7:01 PM
It seems like they are putting certain parts of the interview out of order, to make her look like she’s avoiding a question or unable to understand what’s being asked.
The editing on this has clear ulterior motives.

The interview itself (to answer the question upstream) was not out of the park, but the ramifications of the interview are what is important. ABC made a mistake editing her quote, among other things. And she avoided all gaffes, including the Bush doctrine (McSAME!) trap.
Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 7:02 PM
I just finished watching it and I thought Palin did real well. Better than Charlie.
Terrye on September 11, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Palin’s in a bind that a man wouldn’t be in. A woman has to talk very tough to be perceived as even moderately tough. That’s just the way our minds work. McCain can afford to be more measured in his words, and still convey strength. It’s just harder if you’re a woman.
RBMN on September 11, 2008 at 7:04 PM
The thing to keep in mind about this interview is that it makes Gibson look like the biased di*k that he is and makes Palin look sincere and real as she is.
All in all, the stupid, lesbian, ugly, women, pagan, liberal crowd will still hate her but ALL of the conservative base and a great number of fair-minded independents will love her even more.

HORRIBLE interview.
Editing aside, this was more a “test the dumb broad” rapid-fire. Like someone said upthread, she was asked as many technical FP questions in 10 minutes as Obama was over 16 months.
Personally, I don’t want to hear Palin talking foreign policy. It’s boring, and I see it no more as chest beating “but can the woman talk WAR?”
Palin is good on energy, taxes, bureaucratic reform. They threw the Obama kids their own red meat. And boy, did they ever.
I want to see the interview in full, on several topics, and not this “Holy Warrior” edit they did.
lansing quaker on September 11, 2008 at 7:06 PM
I simply cannot understand why any politician would do an MSM interview without demanding a camera of their own running during it. That way, when the edits distort their answers, they can respond and provide the correct context for the answer.
I can’t wait for the side by side of these questions vs the once that he fed BO. Next ad, “Unbiased”, just has to side by side the questions he asked. You didn’t even need to show the answers.

the left/dems/msm are trying to make obama look more presidential by making biden seem ready and mccain’s pick un-ready.
as if mccain failed his first test. (only this ain’t mccain’s first test, not buy a long shot!)
she did okay. she will play better in the heartland than inside the beltway.
joe “let’s partition iraq” biden plays better inside the beltway
will charlie ask biden about his no vote against the 1992 gulf war?
evidently, biden thinks that when an enemy (saddam) invades an ally (kuwait) we should do anything.
is that presidential?
just asking.
if biden thinks the gulf war was wrong then our allies should shudder at the possibility of his election.
reliapundit on September 11, 2008 at 7:06 PM
I agree with that, but also understand that she would be in that bind as an elected official in addition to being a candidate. She would be in that bind in relating to foreign leaders in addition to relating to reporters.
Sarah should study tapes of Maggie Thatcher.
PackerBronco on September 11, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Verdict from Always Right:
Editing was atrocious and obviously rigged to try to smack Sarah down.
Charlie was arrogant, obnoxious and irritable. IOW, a typical MSM lackey.
Sarah was just fine. She was confident, outspoken and she knew enough to avoid falling into the numerous traps Charlie was laying for her with his gotcha questions.
Sarah solidified her base, and once again the MSM showed how awful and biased they are.

Speaking as a television journalist (yes, I sold my soul), I can say it’s absolutely true that these sorts of things are edited for time at ABC, particularly if they’re going to be on Nightline. These days, any span of silence more than a quarter of a second long is going to get clipped out to make to “keep the action going” (and maybe get an extra question’s worth of time … or an extra commercial’s worth.)
Edited to distort or slant? All I can say is that it’s been done in the past. The proper thing for ABC to do is to put the entire unedited interview online and let us see for ourselves.
