Open thread: Palin on ABC; Update: Gibson distorts Palin’s Iraq prayer; Update: Video of Iraq prayer comments included in segment

posted at 5:20 pm on September 11, 2008 by Allahpundit

We’re still an hour away from World News Tonight, but ABC’s already starting to tease quotes so we’re likely to see web video before they go on the air. Here’s your thread to comment. Currently bannering at their homepage:

EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY

TV Newser has other quotes but so far they’re the most platitudinous platitudes. Stand by for updates. Exit question: When is it appropriate to mix medications?

Update: From what I understand, they’ll run part of the interview on the 6:30 news, then the rest on Nightline at 11:35. Use this thread for both. They’ll do another interview tomorrow and that’ll run mostly on 20/20 at 10 p.m., with other portions possibly to run on WNT and Nightline.

Update: Here’s a partial transcript. Good to see Charlie did his homework:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.

That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. Here’s my post on the subject from last Thursday. Read it and see just how egregious the distortion here is.

Update: They’re also exaggerating what she said with their teaser, which makes it sound like she wants to unilaterally guarantee the security of Russian satellites. Read the excerpt linked above and you’ll see she simply means admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO and bringing them under the aegis of the all-for-one principle, which is McCain’s position. In the meantime, here’s what she says we should do: “It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.”

Update: Two clips are already up in case the transcript’s not good enough. Here and here.

Update: This doesn’t excuse them entirely since only viewers who were paying extremely close attention will have noticed the distortion, but ABC did show the actual 15-second video of her Iraq prayer.

Hmm. She didn’t know the Bush Doctrine, without explanation.

jimmy the notable on September 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Do you believe in the Bush doctrine?

That’s a gotcha question, good answer.

Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM

she didn’t know the Bush Doctrine.

CanadianGuy on September 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Cut off again!!!!

srhoades on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Horrible cutting! This sucks!

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Hmm. She didn’t know the Bush Doctrine, without explanation.

Either that, or she saw a gotcha question coming. Gibson didn’t define it all that well.

Slublog on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

She should just answer “YES WE CAN” every time. That’s worked for the other side.

Jim Treacher on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Another cut. What did she say before that?!

srhoades on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

If it weren’t for BillO the other night, Obama would never have faced tough questions like this.

jimmy the notable on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

She’s getting about 19 months of Obama foreign policy questions in 10 minutes.

CanadianGuy on September 11, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Wow, they chopped this thing like a Cobb Salad.

Jim Treacher on September 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM

How great would it be if there was a cut from the interview to Sarah calmly wiping down her 30.06 and Charlie’s gone?

bush doctrine was not a yes or no question. He’s trying to trap her.

ctmom on September 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Are they going to air the whole thing?

“Lost in a blizzard of words” – Gibson, in Alaska

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Charlie is an ass

econavenger on September 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM

It’s almost as if ABC knew she knocked this one out of the park – and edited it. Of course, this will only lead to whackos on the internet crying foul. Wait and see – the loonies on the Left will be crying conspiracy in 4…3…2…

dugan on September 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Either that, or she saw a gotcha question coming. Gibson didn’t define it all that well.

She saw a gottcha, you can tell by the way she shifted.

No joke. When on earth has Obama ever faced similar criticism for his rambling answers?

I bet she didn’t stutter once.

Kat_Mo on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Bush Doctrine? Not worded properly.

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

SCGOPgirl on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Even with the edits she’s kicking major ass.

srhoades on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

He looks a lot more relieved in the live shot, huh? When he doesn’t have to face down the cute little cupcake who doesn’t know anything.

Jim Treacher on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Disappointing. I can’t tell if the answers are complete. It was obvious that the last one was incomplete because they stopped the sound and cut her off.

Tennman on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

1.) Pick an absolute nobody from the middle of nowhere. [Check]
2.) Put up images of Ronald Reagan on the screen behind her him at the convention and interject some misinterpreted Lincoln quotes in her his speeches. [Check]
3.) Try and trick the base that this is some qualified person for office. [Check]

Great going, McCain Obama. Thanks for choosing someone with actual substance instead of a cardboard cut-out.

an_abstraction on September 11, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Dang, you’re an easy target.

Everything was designed with trap questions that are not even questions that President Bush could answer straight.

IMO, Gibson comes off bad. He fired away. Compare this to hsi interview w Obama.

What’s your favorite color, Senator? /sarc

Other than presiding over the senate and voting in event of a tie, the constitution doesn’t enumerate the duties of VP.

I know this has been mentioned a hundred times already … but has Obama been asked any of these questions?

darwin on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 PM

I wonder if Charlie would badger the Lord Messiah Obama the same way he badgered Sarah.

No way.

He was rude and got lost in a blizzard of bias.

Always Right on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 PM

She could have done better, Charlie was throwing gotcha questions in there, but I think she has survived for now.

El_Terrible on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Wow, Gibson is putting on one of the best interviews of a politician I’ve ever seen. Is he usually like this, or is it unusual for him? I’m not assuming either way as I have no experience with his show.

theblakeus on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

She’s even more of an idiot than Bush.

How is that even possible?

an_abstraction on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I hope the McCain camp recorded the whole thing, I want to see the rest of the story. She’s a lot better at this than Obama was on O’Reilly.

Oldnuke on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Has anyone asked Obama or Biden this stuff???

artchick on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I thought that Gibson tried to make her look stupid when he asked her what she thought of the Bush Doctrine and asked her what she thought it meant when asked which part and then tried to make it look like she didn’t know what it was.

Ginson asked a very broad question and then narrowed in on a smaller section of it.

Punky on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Here is Gibson asking Obama the same question:

Senator Lord Obama, the Bush Doctrine, which entails that the United States had the right to treat countries that harbor or give aid to terrorist groups as terrorists themselves, which was used to justify the invasion of Afghanistan. Later it came to include additional elements, including the controversial policy of preventive war, which held that the United States should depose foreign regimes that represented a threat to the security of the United States, even if that threat was not immediate (used to justify the invasion of Iraq), a policy of supporting democracy around the world, especially in the Middle East, as a strategy for combating the spread of terrorism, and a willingness to pursue U.S. military interests in a unilateral way, what is your stance on this?”

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Bush Doctrine? Not worded properly.

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM

It is for Gibson’s regular audience.

Connie on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I loved how Sarah pwn3d Gibson when he made the comment about sending her son off to war. And she said she was proud of the decision her son made to serve something greater then him self.
Why it is the left wants to give kids right to choose medical procedures but don’t think young adults have the ability to think for themselves and choose to join the service?

The more they use misquotes the more then will show the American people what a bunch of self servicing narcissistic bottom feeding scum they really are.

Mojack420 on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

My left-leaning wife just called to tell me they would never interview a man the way gibson just interviewed Palin.

she was mad.

Vincenzo on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

upinak on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 PM

She’s doing great. Exactly like you’d expect.

The quick editing is bad, but some of must be to pack as much into the evening broadcast as possible. So far, it’s just going to reinforce opinion both on her and media.

Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Talk about a chopped up interview.

In any case, the Bush Doctrine is not an official doctrine. Its clear though she knew it, she was just avoiding phrasing it in Bush like terms.

Her response that we must rid the world of Islamic Extremism actually took the Bush Doctrine a step further, so Gibson’s further questioning of her was trash.

“Have you ever met a foreign leader?”
Geez, why doesn’t charlie just ask “Have you ever been on meet the press?”

El_Terrible on September 11, 2008 at 6:45 PM

And BTW, the bush doctrine question was a total gotcha, especially when she asked him what he meant and he threw it back at her.

What I remembered about that speech was the “either you’re with us or you’re with the terrorists” and the part about “if you sponsor the terrorists you are a terrorist yourself”….

the stuff about preemptive strikes came later.

Always Right on September 11, 2008 at 6:45 PM

carbon_footprint on September 11, 2008 at 6:45 PM

gibson is trying to cause her to say something that will get a negative reaction from Pakistan. Pakistan swore in a corrupt mental midget this week and gibson is trying to get Palin to say something that will provoke him and cause the mccain campaign a headache. Good for her standing her ground. Shows she can’t be bullied by a talking head into making a gaffe.

It’s viewed by an abstraction.

Entelechy on September 11, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Blatant hit piece. She handled it well, but Charlie was out to get her. No question.

They kept cutting her answers off, then editing in multiple follow up to make her look evasive.

The Bush Doctrine was a loaded question and she called him on it. Then he spun the question to his own gain to try and make her look ignorant.

In fairness, they were all fair questions. But again…

WHY HAS NO ONE ASKED OBAMA THESE QUESTIONS IN OVER 18 MONTHS!

She is a VP nominee and went through more loaded question inside of 5 minutes than Obama has gone through… ever.

Damiano on September 11, 2008 at 6:46 PM

It seemed to me Sarah could sense the Gotcha questions and the traps he was laying for her and refused to venture into them.

Good for her.

The fact that Charlie was frustrated is his own problem.

Always Right on September 11, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Does anyone really not believe the entire purpose of this interview is to fatally trip her up? It’s Charlie Gibson’s dream. It’s everybody in the media’s dream. He wants to be the hero that brought down Sarah Palin. They grovel at Obama’s feet but can’t wait to tear her throat out. In my view, it will not be possible for her to emerge from this interview without damage. ABC will not permit another kind of result.

Ok people.. besides throwing a fit.. can you all let the rest of us KNOW what happened. I got the fact it was edited beyond belief. Anything else?

upinak on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Meh, he asked her a few foreign policy questions. She gave very Bush-ish answers in my estimation, in that there was alot of rhetoric about the terrorists that we’ve heard a hundred times before. Its not that it isn’t true, its just that I’m so sick of hearing the same answers. She gave him a real good answer about how Alaska has a huge part of America’s energy and that Energy policy is linked to foreign policy.

ManlyRash on September 11, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Could Charlie sigh any deeper?!

jencab on September 11, 2008 at 6:48 PM

To be fair, Gibson and Stephanopolis were the only hosts of any debate to ask Obama tough questions.

And Obama decided that he didn’t want anymore debates right after that.

embittered redleg on September 11, 2008 at 6:48 PM

She’s direct and to the point. She’s no typical politician. Sarah comes across as a little nervous, but also very, very human. From what we’re being allowed to see of this interview, she’s definitely doing much more good than harm. Questions? Sarah’s fielding ‘em all, and not once has she lurched toward Gibson, like Obama did toward O’Reilly, in a defensive posture.

So far? Ground rule double.

dugan on September 11, 2008 at 6:48 PM

She didn’t come off as she usually does.

Maybe it was the sour old man three feet away her, radiating hostility and a hunger for schadenfreude into her face.

They haven’t discussed anything in detail yet. That’s the fault of the interviewer.

Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 6:48 PM

Not to complain about the edits again, but with that thing chopped as it was, ABC owes it to release the full transcript. It’s hard to judge properly when you know so many pieces of the puzzle are missing.

Pasalubong on September 11, 2008 at 6:48 PM

Not great. But the good thing is, I didn’t know what the goddamn bush doctrine was either (and I’m guessing that 99% of the public didn’t either).

Nice to see ABC cave but its good Sarah got this interveiw out of the way.

William Amos on September 11, 2008 at 6:49 PM

The “Bush Doctrine” means something different to the Kos Kids than it does to the Bush Administration. I dare say it’s been defined in many ways, depending on the political views of those who define it. To the Kos Kids, the “Bush Doctrine” includes rounding up innocent Muslims at random, and waterboarding them until they say they’re Osama’s right hand man and they have plans to bomb Disneyland.

I think Sarah did fine. She did what any skilled politican would do… sense the landmines hidden in the loaded questions and refuse to step on them.

She is a lot shrewder than the idiot liberals give her credit for. And dont worry, no matter what she says they will attack her, so she has to just fend off the biased media questions and continue to speak to plain America.

Always Right on September 11, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Yeah, they’re probably gonna make hay that she “doesn’t know what the Bush doctrine is”, but I think it was smart of her to ask him to define it, since so many people have perverted the definition.

I think part of that was the edits and Gibson’s insistence in trying to trap her up and change questions on her.

Just saw the first half with foreign policy being the main line of interrogation. Charlie is a donkey behind! He asked her if it was okay for us to go into Pakistan without their permission. Note to Charlie, been there done that!

He seemed to be the voice of the Left and she fought back. I thought she came across strong. Waiting to see “God is Evil” second half at the end of the interrogation. Do they all believe God is just some entity that wants bad things for us? He seems so far in the clips posted to portray her beliefs as wacko and wrong.
