We’re still an hour away from World News Tonight, but ABC’s already starting to tease quotes so we’re likely to see web video before they go on the air. Here’s your thread to comment. Currently bannering at their homepage:
EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY
TV Newser has other quotes but so far they’re the most platitudinous platitudes. Stand by for updates. Exit question: When is it appropriate to mix medications?
Update: From what I understand, they’ll run part of the interview on the 6:30 news, then the rest on Nightline at 11:35. Use this thread for both. They’ll do another interview tomorrow and that’ll run mostly on 20/20 at 10 p.m., with other portions possibly to run on WNT and Nightline.
Update: Here’s a partial transcript. Good to see Charlie did his homework:
GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?
PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.
GIBSON: Exact words.
PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.
But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.
That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.
GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”
Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. Here’s my post on the subject from last Thursday. Read it and see just how egregious the distortion here is.
Update: They’re also exaggerating what she said with their teaser, which makes it sound like she wants to unilaterally guarantee the security of Russian satellites. Read the excerpt linked above and you’ll see she simply means admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO and bringing them under the aegis of the all-for-one principle, which is McCain’s position. In the meantime, here’s what she says we should do: “It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.”
Update: Two clips are already up in case the transcript’s not good enough. Here and here.
Update: This doesn’t excuse them entirely since only viewers who were paying extremely close attention will have noticed the distortion, but ABC did show the actual 15-second video of her Iraq prayer.

From the clip, she’s smooth. No hesitation. And no “uh…um..uh..ah” like some supposed great orator we all know.

Interesting angle, why aren’t they showing her face? They are only showing the back of her head, and you can see his face. wtf is up with that?

Will she use the term “US Americans”?

so far so good. Understands NATO, has a world view that rights are god given not government given, that things are part of God’s plan and we are his instruments in that plan. no ego being seen. humble but resolute on accepting the VP pick. I give the excerpts an A so far.

Relax, unless she goes into five-alarm stammer mode all most of her current fans will see is a woman of conviction. Gibson is honor bound to play gitcha with her as some weird contract they have at the M$M about screwing over the GOP in lieu of democrats to show “balance”. Notice they will grill her on this “holy war gaffe” they created with a far greater intensity than even going as far as Bill O’relliy did about Obame$$iah and TUCC.
This is what it is, we are who we are.
We’re better than the donks, the race is between McCain and Bambi not Bambi and Sarah.

Answering my own question:
In the clip, you can only see GIBSON’S face, because they want the public to get HIS reaction, not to understand what she is saying. Facial expression is an important component of communication, and they are intentionally trying to block her.
JustTruth101 on September 11, 2008 at 5:53 PM
Exit answer: I think it’s worth a handful of credit hours at most journalism schools.
You’re Thursday post nailed it: assertion of fact VS expression of desire.
As for the msm, I think it’s a blending of both – “To bowdlerize or not to bowdlerize… it’s not even a question!”
locomotivebreath1901 on September 11, 2008 at 5:53 PM
I’m assuming that’s just for the early release on the internet. It’ll be different on tv.
dugan on September 11, 2008 at 5:53 PM
That’s what passes as a hard hitting question these days? Excerpting some words out of context. Nice.
Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 5:53 PM
ABC is also repeating the smear that Sarah Palin fired a librarian in Wasilla for not banning books.
See the article here. Amazing.
dKap on September 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Really milking it, aren’t they? Sorry, ABC, but I’m not going on an extended Easter-egg hunt through every one of your shows to see the whole interview. I’ll wait for it to be posted online, thanks.
aero on September 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM
She needs to stop calling Charlie by name. To me she seems a little too stiff and rehearsed. But then- they’re only showing a side shot. I hope the head-shot is smoother.
FiveWays on September 11, 2008 at 5:55 PM
FiveWays:
And Josh Marshall was whining that Gibson sold out by making it too easy for her by giving her too much time and latitude.
She is running for national office. Do not treat her like some hot house flower.
Terrye on September 11, 2008 at 5:56 PM
I watched the short clip and excerpts from the transcript ABC provided. Gibson did indeed distort Gov. Palin’s remarks from her church and try to make her into some kind of “doing a mission from God” nutcase. He failed.
What I saw makes her infinitely more qualified than Osama Obama and Biden combined. She is poised, speaks well and clearly.
I expect the usual suspects to slam her remorselessly for not simply resigning on the spot.
MrScribbler on September 11, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I have seen the clip and read the transcript. She comes across well, but I wished she had fleshed out her experience a little more than just saying she did not blink. It was too much of a shift in the direction away from the question, and not an answer. But, she does have to show confidence in herself and whether or not she was up for the McCain campaign without any doubts. Of course this is just a snippet, and as all of you have pointed out, I also hope the McCain camp also filmed this in case there is a departure from what was really said by Palin. The headlines alone at ABC make it look as if perhaps she made a gaffe or is some type of war monger! Whatever.
freeus on September 11, 2008 at 5:57 PM
More predictions:
4. The McCain campaign videotaped the interviews and can expose to worst out-of-context quotes.
5. The left blogs will hype some silly distortions.
6. Allahpundit will find a reason to be pessimistic.
7. Joe Biden will cringe in fear.
Right_of_Attila on September 11, 2008 at 5:58 PM
You’ve got to love how ABC frames things./sarc
quote from their article:
The interview hasn’t even aired and they are smearing it. I also noticed that they edited her explanation as to why she feels that she’s qualified in the clip. They cut it down to essential “Yes”, then moved on to his “hubris” statement.
These are fair questions, but WHY HAS NO ONE ASKED THEM OF OBAMA!
Damiano on September 11, 2008 at 5:58 PM
I believe that’s who she is. She’s known as a Governor who looks you in the eye and talks directly to you.
dugan on September 11, 2008 at 5:58 PM
As long as she doesn’t use “my friends” it’ll be fine.
Darth Executor on September 11, 2008 at 5:58 PM
This is definitely a hit-piece.
FiveWays on September 11, 2008 at 5:58 PM
If the partial transcript is any indication, I suspect the BIG loser in tonight’s interview will be Joe Biden. If she comes across in person, as well-spoken as she appears to be in the transcript, Joe B. probably will manufacture some serious “condition” so as to avoid having to debate her.

Hypothetically putting Georgia in NATO and then putting Palin on the spot in that scenario was an irresponsible angle, considering the tensions now.
Georgia is not in NATO, so it’s a moot point and a dangerous gotcha attempt. But Charlie needs to be tough for his peers, so he chose some journalistic brinkmanship hoping to to make her seem like she’s a crazed nuclear warmonger for God.
I’ve learned so far that Charlie Gibson is a loose cannon. He’s the kind of guy who would see his triggering an escalation of tensions or a future nuclear war as a badge of journalistic integrity. America last, career first.
econavenger on September 11, 2008 at 6:01 PM
It is also standard practice to edit in reaction shots from the interviewer after the fact which may in fact have been shot before or after the actual interview took place. There is something in News Room Editing called A and B roll.
There are indeed a great many subtle ways to manipulate material which indeed we know the MSM are doing all the time.
Nyog_of_the_Bog on September 11, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Man I would run with this. Id attack the left saying “See now they want America to abandon our allies. Britian and Canada and France and Germany who all stood with us on 9/11 against our enemies.”
“Now the media is mocking NATO saying should we avoid going to bat ofr our allies. America doenst Abandon Britian in its time of need, We wont abandon Canada in its time of need, we wont abandon France or Germany or any NATO ally. ”
“We have fought for freedom all over the globe and stood up for people everywhere putting our soldiers lives in danger and losing their lives to protect other peoples freedoms>”
The Media may mock that but we dont accept that abdandoning our friends is the right thing to do just for political expediencey”

The mistake ABC makes with the crap they’re posting is that they still think we’re limited to their coverage against CBS and NBC.

FiveWays on September 11, 2008 at 6:03 PM
The answers are not as important as the attitude. If she hems and haws like Obama, she is dead.
But she will be assertive, smile, confident, the answers basically can’t be right or wrong. They will be spun however the other side (or our side) wants them to be spun.
What can’t be spun is the “tude”…she will connect with Gibson, he will “feel the force”…Hell, he might ask to be on her staff after the interview.
right2bright on September 11, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Assuming the McCain camp demanded access to the full unedited video, they can put anything taken out of context back into context. If it turns out to be a clumsy and desperate attempt to smear Palin, it will backfire big time on ABC. It seems to me the media is on trial in this election.

Entelechy on September 11, 2008 at 6:06 PM
So when is the MSM going to protray GOv. Palin as an individual instead of a ornament or a parrot?
these answers show a very individual view of her thoughts. Her worldview. I am impressed on the answer of where our rights come from. From God not from the government. I wish someone would ask Obama where he thinks our rights come from.

ManlyRash on September 11, 2008 at 6:12 PM
Many of you were kids when Reagan arrived. The same thing happened, maybe worse.
The thing to remember is, if Palin (and she does) connects to the common person, nothing will touch her. She can make a mistake, and will be forgiven.
Reagan, once that connection was made, took everything to the people. The MSM tried to block him every which way, but the people wanted to hear Reagan and trusted him…even when he made mistakes.
Palin has that connection. As long as she stays “Alaskan” she will beat down any of Gibson’s or ABC’s stabs and thrusts.
If she answers with certainty, positively, assertively, as a woman, she will win whatever debate or charge they throw at her.
I would say she has a broader appeal then Reagan, and I think that is what concerns the dems and the MSM. This is an uncontrollable event. She is the only one that can stop her (if that makes sense).
