Open thread: Palin on ABC; Update: Gibson distorts Palin’s Iraq prayer; Update: Video of Iraq prayer comments included in segment

We’re still an hour away from World News Tonight, but ABC’s already starting to tease quotes so we’re likely to see web video before they go on the air. Here’s your thread to comment. Currently bannering at their homepage:

EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY

TV Newser has other quotes but so far they’re the most platitudinous platitudes. Stand by for updates. Exit question: When is it appropriate to mix medications?

Update: From what I understand, they’ll run part of the interview on the 6:30 news, then the rest on Nightline at 11:35. Use this thread for both. They’ll do another interview tomorrow and that’ll run mostly on 20/20 at 10 p.m., with other portions possibly to run on WNT and Nightline.

Update: Here’s a partial transcript. Good to see Charlie did his homework:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.

That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. Here’s my post on the subject from last Thursday. Read it and see just how egregious the distortion here is.

Update: They’re also exaggerating what she said with their teaser, which makes it sound like she wants to unilaterally guarantee the security of Russian satellites. Read the excerpt linked above and you’ll see she simply means admitting Georgia and Ukraine to NATO and bringing them under the aegis of the all-for-one principle, which is McCain’s position. In the meantime, here’s what she says we should do: “It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.”

Update: Two clips are already up in case the transcript’s not good enough. Here and here.

Update: This doesn’t excuse them entirely since only viewers who were paying extremely close attention will have noticed the distortion, but ABC did show the actual 15-second video of her Iraq prayer.

by “honestly” you mean “with more scrutiny than the other sides’ Presidential candidate ever gets because he is the Black ManChild”?

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 10:20 PM

No, just honestly, without reference to either O’Biden or Gibby. Just on her own terms, on her own strengths and weaknesses.

trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Thanks for clearing that up. Whospered is a new one to me.

Puty needs some kind of whispering – dog, horse, bear, nukular…

trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 10:21 PM

the art of bear-whispering involves MIRV, a steel will, and a missile defense shield in the minds of your opponents….

sound familiar?

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM

yes she wanted clarification. Very skillfull politician…was not aware of the trap he was setting but aware a trap was being set. She avoided it very well.

unseen on September 11, 2008 at 9:57 PM

She could have handled it more smoothly. But I’m not looking for some smooth talking politician. I’m looking for somebody I can trust, even if I disagree with them on some things, at least I know where they stand.

Where does Obama stand, except in any available spotlight?

doesn’t exist…

this is the equivalent of Palin getting shot by a firing squad for honest answers to the best of her ability and the ONE getting cookies for waiting until he is in the car on the way home to crap on himself….

Sarah did fine, and Gibson is the one who looks like a dork for forgetting his job is “interviewer” not Biden’s “stunt double”.

Nice clip.

It looks like she didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is. Not surprising since Bush himself seems to have forgotten and the phrase hasn’t been used much since 2002, but it was a bit of a misstep on her part. Nevertheless, she covered pretty well and essentially reiterated it in her answer, even though she didn’t use the term. Moderately impressive.

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Yup, new show on Discovery, called the Nuke Whisperer. Features Puty, Amanutjob, Dear Leader in the first episode. Don’t know if a second episode will be needed.

trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 10:26 PM

ABC’s Charlie Gibson introduces Palin to the nation.

Saltysam on September 11, 2008 at 9:48 PM

Here is another example of Gibson being as gentle as a lamb with Obama, compared with his relentless questioning of Palin. The more of this I see, the more I think this interview will benefit Governor Palin.

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 10:28 PM

The question was based on a willful misquote….

she wants us to be in line with His pla not him with ours….

sven10077 on September 11, 2008 at 9:37 PM

I read her actual speech, friend. She’s a soldier for that crucifix-art you call god, but she’s too scared to admit that god tells her to kill others in his/her/its name lest she be labeled a theocrat. And, like most of you hypochristians, take the money and guns out of her hands and she’s defenseless. Pathetic!

Loxodonta on September 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM

Obama wants to invade pakistian. a country with 170m people, lawless frontiers, empassable mountians where helicoptos don’t work and are extremely vunable to SAM. And a country that has nuclear weapons to boot, a country that is a balance of power within the region between china and india and afganistan and russia. a country that is a quasi-ally. for the sole purpose of showing his toughness. Afganistian is a war that can only be won after 20-30 years of reeducation of the population, of economic prosperity and yes killing the nutcases. Invading Pakistian would be the biggest blunder we couls do. at this point in time. small surgical strikes to kill or capture the leaders of terror are fine but not a full scale invasion. Our soldiers would be eaten alive in those mountians. Heavy armor, helicoptors etc would not work.

Sarah’s first mistake – she agreed with Charlene that the planet is getting warmer. Actually over the last 10 years it has not and in the last year has actually gotten cooler. Why? Why the warming in the 20th century? The trend is the same for all the planets in the solar system. Gee, what do all the planets have in common.

A couple of posters have borne that out tonite.

irongrampa on September 12, 2008 at 12:16 AM

I think the second cut of the interview actually favors her more. They didn’t cut off some answers, which as a result made more sense. They also cut out her first response about foreign policy credentials, which was to talk about energy and its national security implications. It was a good point, but I thought it was one of her weaker moments because it seemed not to have anything to do with the question at all.

The global warming interview was better, as she seemed a little more comfortable. I don’t agree with her answer, but it’s probably in line with what a lot of people have been led to believe. Gibson did catch her in a small flip-flop, but he didn’t push it, so no big deal. Her answer on ANWR of course, was good.

The bad thing is, I wonder how many people stayed up to watch the Nightline version. If most people just wacthed the evening news, then their impression might be skewed.

Like it or not. the glaciers and sea ice around Alaska is retreating. Does that mean the earth is still warming or has not started to cool? while the global temputure over the last year has fallen dramacticlly the earth is a big system and the effects of the recent warming are still be felt. It will take a season or two to show the ice getting thicker and the glaciers advancing again. However I thought her answer while not great by my standards would soothe the “middle class environmentalist” while at the same time giving hope to us that think the earth was warming naturally. Of course her statement will only piss off those leftwing nutcases that think man is unnatural and should be killed. Or those rightwing people that think man has nothing to do with the environment.

So on the whole pretty good. I would have no problems fighting polution as long as CO2 is not part of the definition of polution

The single most important aspect of this interview is that Sarah did better than Charlie and the rest of the MSM expected. They don’t have a lot to work with honestly here. So, they will work with it dishonestly, and it will show, backfiring on them again.

Trailboss (and others): She did just fine on the Bush Doctrine question. She asked him to clarify, because it was necessary–most people get the original meaning wrong, as it has been used in so many ever-broadening contexts.

She held up, did just fine, will get even better–not better, notice–EVEN better.

Charlie was a snot. Hard questions are fair, but he got EVEN snottier as it went along, because she wasn’t falling into his traps.

Round One: Sarah, on points.

I don’t know Energy is connected to forgeign policy on many levels. If not for Oil do you really think we would be in Iraq? do you think Russia would be in Georgia if not for the pipeline that runs through it? Do you think we would be having genocide in Dafur if not for the oil in the sudan? Or Libya would have ever had the money to fund a terroist regime, or Iran be able to support hezzbolla? and do you think we would give a crap about chevez if not for oil?

energy is a big foundation for our entire forgien policy.

There is also the issue of the vast amounts of money the US sends to oil producing countries, too many of which are unstable or unfriendly to the point of being enemies. Governor Palin clearly gets this aspect of the link between energy and national security: (paraphrasing her) Let’s keep the money here buying developing our own energy supplies as we convert to a less petroleum dependent country.

They don’t have a lot to work with honestly here. So, they will work with it dishonestly,

Well if it isn’t the beggar.
This is the guy that takes what the faithful has built, uses it, and then disses the people who gave it to him.
This is why welfare never works, guys like this take and take, then belly ache about the people who provide.
I tell you what, why don’t you try to get along in the country without using any of the services that were built and created by the faithful, then we will see how “independent” you are. Seeing how you find what the faithful do and worship is so repugnant…you’re a beggar, screeching for more.

They really are desperate to stop the Palin energy. Have you seen tomorrow’s WaPo front page? look at Hot Air headlines.

The war has begun.

And I’m skeptical that the GOP is prepared to fight, tooth and nail, and destroy the opposition.

news flash the media is mad…because their attacks aren’t working. Notice what the author says. He says the liberal media. In their madness they name themselves…The media has destroyed themselves and all of america is seeing it in real time.
sad day in america…The McCain ad on sex education. why does no one question if it was a good idea to even teach kindergarters about bad touches or good touches… I thought that was the parents job..not governments.

the media’s mad. well guess what media the Americian people are mad. They are mad because you have abandoned your role as protector of the people from government power and thrown in with a presidental canidate. Your puupy love with Obama makes us mad as hell and sick to our stomachs…..

This war has been going on for a long, long time. In this particular phase, there was the daily bombardment of bad news about Iraq, some of which was later proven false or proven to be unprovable. Then, after the Surge started working, the MSM suddenly went silent. And how long did it take for a majority the public to catch on that the Surge has worked?

Then there has been years of the daily bombardment about the current or pending recession and the worst economy since the Great Depression, even though economic indicators show that is not true. Yet, most Americans think the economy is lousy.

My only hope for a favorable outcome is McCain/Palin going around, over and under the MSM, and the fact the more people distrust the media than every before in polling history.

Loxodonta on September 12, 2008 at 12:56 AM

One part of national security that still is ignored is our currency.

Because of monstrous trade deficits, much of it caused by purchasing so much oil from imports, the currency continues its long-term slide down. This trade imbalance combined with low interest rates is keeping the dollar low and driving high gas prices.

As the currency goes, so goes the country.

Sarah is DAMN correct that getting our energy resources domestically is a national security issue, and not only reducing the trade deficit but providing more jobs/investment domestically.

If China started dumping all their dollars, it could be leverage like what Russia has on Western Europe via natural gas, etc.

We need to start now with energy independence, but it will be a long process.

I thought McCain bought into that, too.

capitalist piglet on September 12, 2008 at 12:03 AM

Yes he does but then I am voting for McCain/Palin while praying for a “circumstance” that elevates Sarah to the Presidency as early as next year.

Love it.

Imagine an ad with the song “and they called it…puppy loooovvve” with cuts of video of Obama smiling and laughing, and cutting to Gibson smiling and laughing, back to Obama, cut to Couric, back to smiling Obama, back to gushing Matthews etc…then cut to phone ringing at 3′OClock in the morning. A direct attack upon the media and Obama at the same time.

Loxodonta on September 12, 2008 at 12:56 AM

And the key to that strategy is this.

Sarah gets ratings.

She can get coverage on her terms, simply because they want her on the camera. With that power, she can talk directly to the American people and the press is going to have to play HER game. If only the McCain camp is brave enough to let her run with it.

Saltysam on September 12, 2008 at 1:22 AM

here’s another “News” headline from the Associated with terrorist Press:

Palin tries to defend qualifications in interview

Note that she cannot actually defend her qualifications, but only “tries” to. The article is dripping with elitist misrepresentations.

According to the AP, has Obama ever “tried” to defend himself about anything?

Loxodonta on September 12, 2008 at 1:27 AM

A former Hillary Clinton loyalist says Barack Obama should focus more on Sarah Palin’s readiness to lead, and that she still needs to be “tested” on that ability.

“I would deal with this differently, and not because (Palin) is a woman,” Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California told FOX News.

At which point, Palin should challenge Obama to a debate. If anyone watched Obama on ABC last Sunday, Stephanopolous surprised Obama with his last question, “Would you debate Sarah Palin one on one?”

Obama couldn’t say “No”, and he most assuredly shouldn’t say “yes”, but he did say “yes”, because that was his only option.

Palin should throw down the gauntlet.

BTW-Where is all the press on that little exchange with Stephanopolous?

Saltysam on September 12, 2008 at 1:43 AM

Correction.

Sorry, I misunderstood the exchange. Apparently, he was asked if he would go one on one against Palin.

It was a reference to basketball.

I still think she should challenge him to a debate.

For those who believe she did well, here is a link to show it. For those who believe she did badly, here is a link to help make up for it. For those who just want to keep Hussein out of the White House, here is a link to help do it.

Her prayer, which is so much more awful than the one of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright just shy of seven years ago. In which he proclaimed that “America’s chickensssss, are coming home…… to rooooost”.

Give me a prayer for God’s will to be enacted over some blowhard’s crap any day.

Has ANY VP Nominee ever had to sit through this kind of direct questions from any “Journalists”?

Anybody….anybody

I found Gibson to be very condescending and chauvinistic, glaring down over his glasses at her.

So sad, we must crush these liberals and retake our country.

read her actual speech, friend. She’s a soldier for that crucifix-art you call god, but she’s too scared to admit that god tells her to kill others in his/her/its name lest she be labeled a theocrat. And, like most of you hypochristians, take the money and guns out of her hands and she’s defenseless. Pathetic!

I’m amazed at the number of “life-long Republicans” posting here tonight who not only seem shocked by conservative values, but terrified by a successful, conservative woman.

It’s like moths that cannot resist flying into the flame of a candle.
