Obama vows: Only I will deliver the nightmarish amnesty America neither wants nor needs

Speaking before the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., blasted Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for not including comprehensive immigration reform in his party’s platform.
“And when it came time to write his party’s platform, comprehensive reform never made it in,” Obama said before the institution’s annual gala in Washington, D.C. “So, you’ve got to ask yourself: if Sen. McCain won’t stand up to opponents of reform at his own convention, how can you trust him to stand up for change in Washington?”…
“When he was running for his party’s nomination, he abandoned his stance, and said he wouldn’t even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote,” Obama said to the audience. “Well, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time for a president who won’t walk away from comprehensive immigration reform when it becomes politically unpopular.”
Note how careful he is to stress that McCain only “abandoned” his stance (which he never quite did) during the primaries. Quite so; with the start of the general election, he was back onboard the amnesty bandwagon. Man, was he ever. Fully 69% of the public wants the borders secured before we turn to the important business of amnestizing tens of millions of violations of American immigration law — up from 63% in June, do note — but darned if both our candidates don’t have their hearts set on a comprehensive solution. The key difference between them, apparently? McCain will at least pay lip service to taking care of the borders first.
Awfully unsporting of Barry to knock him over the GOP’s platform, though. Doubtless it was only through Team Maverick’s intervention that a statement of opposition to comprehensive reform was omitted. Exit question one: Is Kaus right? A 50% chance of amnesty under McCain versus a 20% chance under Obama? And exit question two: What’s going to happen when Charlie Gibson asks Palin how she feels about amnesty and she looks in the camera and starts mouthing the old, stomach-churning Maverick-ian platitudes about what it means to be a “true friend” to Hispanics? Second look at Fred!

I, at this point, expect a fight – a big one – with either President over Amnesty. Palin’s stance on it, right now, to me, is totally irrelevent.

Mr. Bingley on September 11, 2008 at 2:57 PM
McCain could cement the Election, by stateing that he will Veto ANY Amnesty in his first term… and then promise to push it in his second. If he said we need that much time to secure the borders due to National Security reasons, Hispanics would not balk…
This will give the American people time to secure the border, and then THAT election would be a referendum on immigration… when hopefully we have less International issues to deal with…
Romeo13 on September 11, 2008 at 2:57 PM
Don’t ignore the fact that Obama took absolutely NO PART in the massive complete comprehensive immigration reform bill that McCain almost succeeded in having passed into legislation.
Obama the weenie pirate. No effort at work. Stick-ups after hours. Obama’s pay scale: unemployed thug.

Well, with amnesty and either of the two candidates, get ready for a patented Laura Ingraham “POWER TO THE PEOPLE” moment, because that’s what it’s going to take.
Matticus Finch on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Huh. Seems I read somewhere just this morning that Obama was a radical on illegals, and Kaus was nuts.

Did you watch the Oreilly interview with O, how he quickly shied away from the comment about the illegals were dragging us down.
reshas1 on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Um, how is this a winner for Barry?
All McCain has to say is that he supports a secure border first; and that 70% of americans agree.
lorien1973 on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Why are so many conservatives (Mark Krikorian at NRO is a huge offender) so eager to undermine the McCain-Palin chances by trying to make immigration a big issue in the presidential campaign when thusfar it has not been?
People, the world isn’t perfect. McCain is not your ideal candidate in every respect. And there will be plenty of time for a public uproar if the comprehensive reform comes before the border is secured.
But, please, let’s have that particular debate after election day.
JudetheFossil on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM
IOW – vote for me and I will guarantee open borders and cement the primacy of the Democrat party for all time.
McCain needs to get off the amnesty bus, now.
DerKrieger on September 11, 2008 at 2:59 PM
69% of the nation is racist bigots? Heartache.
Ironically, McCain’s stance might help him in the general, but I think it’s so far down the list now it won’t shift any voters.
She disagrees with Mac on various points and hasn’t been afraid to state them (drilling most prominently). If she actually has a defined opinion, there’s no particular reason to think she would say something different then Cheney on this, ie, I will support the position of the ticket. That’s a good answer.
Spirit of 1776 on September 11, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Good news – I was afraid Bambi would suddenly take the Tancredo stance and beat McCain to death with it, since that probably would have worked.
But I guess Barry wants to make sure he gets 100% of all illegal immigrant votes instead of 98.8%.
Hey, John – you don’t need Juan Hernandez anymore. Time to save your campaign some money and dump him.

Honestly, think about it, Obama is being a genius right here. The Republican party is united behind a McCain-Palin ticket for the most part (more so than the Democratic party over their ticket). What is the best way to create division within the Republican party? Make McCain talk about immigration reform. Brilliant! That sneaky sneaky man.
DanStark on September 11, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Our current policy is amnesty. I’d say the odds of that policy continuing under either candidate is, conservatively, 100%.
RightOFLeft on September 11, 2008 at 3:04 PM
The Dems will never give up on amnesty because they see it as their ticket to perpetual power by diluting the white vote. It is the white vote after all that keeps the Dems out of the WH year after year. Even with 95% of the black vote Obama still might lose. What they need is more non-whites, especially Latinos who come from semi-socialist cultures and are accustomed to and expect big government solutions.
If only the WSJ types could understand the long term threat to business by supporting amnesty and uncontrolled immigration.

How many illegals have acorn registered????
Mojack420 on September 11, 2008 at 3:06 PM
I dunno… it would certainly hurt him in the boarder states. I live in TX and a new local city council person brought up the idea of checking I-9 documentation for all city contracted workers. It EXPLODED all of a sudden, every reporter and nut in the state descended on my town and boycotts sprung up everywhere. The city council quickly swept the issue under the rug by deciding that current contract language was sufficient (which essentially says that it’s the employer’s problem).
Texas is a gimme for McCain, but NM and CO are not looking good and could be the lynch pin for this election.
Obama was pretty slick in opening this can of worms by pushing it onto McCain without talking about his own policies. It’s weak ground for McCain, who can’t really respond without hurting himself.
I don’t like it, but it’s the best ju jitsu Obama has managed so far.
Damiano on September 11, 2008 at 3:06 PM
We have to accept that McCain is misguided about illegal immigration. I doubt the VP would affect that. McCain is from a state that is intimately familiar with immigration problems, but he still doesn’t get it. I doubt any set of intellectual arguments, whether they be delivered by Fred or someone else, would be able to change McCain’s mind.
I do think there is hope, however. McCain has reconsidered his positions on drilling in response to the popular “uprising” of regular Americans who are sick of Congress doing nothing while gas prices climb. I think a similar uprising will occur on immigration as sanctuary cities continue to protect illegals who commit horrendous crimes on our citizens and the costs to taxpayers in places like California continue to escalate. When Americans make it clear that they are fed up, McCain will come around.

Good point. Obama has a depressing history of leeching off others’ successes. His attempt to weasel himself into the immigration bill he had no part in and denigrate McCain’s part in pushing it and almost getting it passed (which thank God he didn’t succeed, but..) is really illuminating.
The arrogance is breathtaking.

“As Vice President, I will support the position of our President.”
All those nay-sayers can chew on “as VP” when they contemplate their own ill will towards McCain.
Should they be so obtuse as to infer ill health upon McCain, Palin need only respond that McCain’s health may well out perform the journalists’ personal health conditions.
More than anything, I LOOK FORWARD to the day when there is a most effective non-response to squash ill meant questions. Silent treatment only works on civilized minds, not abusive radicals.
Palin’s effective messaging is her talent and sword in media battle. She knows herself. And she knows her world, the world that radicals thought they already smothered. My world.

When 20+ million illegals get citizenship, the socialist votes of the new citizens will overwhelm the votes of the conservatives, probably forever.
Obama is worse than McCain on most issues, but McCain is the worst on the most important issue: voter demographics.

McCain would do well to pit the open borders partisans against the environmentalists.
He could say something about the number of new power plants and refineries required to supoprt a growing populaiton. He could mention how much water would be required, how much “pristine” land would have to be bulldozed. paved, built over, and he could point out how much more CO2 all these people would be responsible for creating. How will we ever meet our emissions targets with more people?

Sure the majority of illegals are from Latin America, but this is about all illegal immigrants from everywhere. This is a national security issue. I don’t get what Obama and McCain don’t get about that?
Several hundred thousand people of Arab descent over the last 5 yrs. have been caught coming thru our southern border. Those are just what have been caught! This is not an issue about hispanics or latinos, for God sake.
I’m of Irish descent. I remember going to the beach on the east coast every summer and about every 5th person who watied on me in a restaurant or store had an Irish accent. Alot of these kids didn’t go back. They have continually overstayed their work visas. I don’t have any sympathy for them either.

The other side of this is the refugee issue. Refeuee Resettlement Watch blog (can’t link from work) keeps a close eye on this. Catholilc Charities is responsible for nearly all the resettlement of the Muslim Somalis. Remember the taxi driver, Target pork handler, and Flying Imams issues? All Somalis. All probably brought here by CC. We need to kill the refugee resettlement programs. CC et al make money on each refugee they resettle so they have a lot of incentive to keep importing them.

My own opinion is that not experiencing that connection, perhaps due to regional influences, I don’t know, but the expectation is that the unknown will be ‘typical politician’. If McCain get’s in the White House, I am betting that comprehensive immigration policy will follow. Boarders first, then start digging into the rest of it.
This is a no-win issue for either party though. Obama bringing it up was clever, since he directed the whole discussion at the absence in the RNC platform without discussing his policies. It’s all pander without much potential for backlash.

John McCain: That is a very good question and yes when I become el Presidente I will put up a physical fence. What will it look like? Well it will run the full length of the border and have special security gates every 100 feet.
All the security gates will have on them:
1) Press one for Spanish (with a response of “Welcome Amigos and God’s children, my country is your country and please take a free map to the wonderful plantation owner employer of your choice. Amnesty has to be won/lost at the legislative level. Local representatives/senators have to hear from their constituencies at a grass roots level. This is how it was turned back last year. It was stopped with Bush supporting it.

I think it’s a smart tactic for Obama. Every time McCain opens his mouth about amnesty it’s like pouring cold water on his base, and that’s just what Obama wants. He knows that many in his base feel the same way, but McCain has a similar position on the issue, so they can’t flop candidates.
Obama wants to reverse the Palin awakening, of conservatives, and this could work. McCain has little room to maneuver on this issue, as we have seen on these comments, almost anything he says about immigration results in a massive conservative groan. Will McCain take the bait and douse the conservative excitement generated by Palin, or will he pander to the base? If he does pander will it result in even greater conservative interest?

The change from McCain has been to acknowledge to Americans he gets the message on building the fence first. He has not to my knowledge changed his stance on amnesty other than committing to building the fence first. All this does is demonstrate how McCain is a Maverick, does buck his party and this only brings to mind the question of when has Obama in his 97% voting record bucked the DNC? If you begin seriously looking at the possible deviance from the DNC all you will discover is that yes, B. Hussein Obama did deviate from his party by going more to the Left than the majority of the Democrats in flyover America. I find it hard to believe most flyover Dems believe in infanticide, educating 5 year olds in sex education and higher taxes plus straight amnesty. So, Obama by bringing this up does not hurt McCain, but instead once again shoots himself in the foot. While 70% of Americans do not approve of amnesty, or the McCain-Kennedy bill, we do get the dangers Obama proposes for this country that go well beyond amnesty. Agreeing with Putin most of the time comes to mind, Iran, Iraq, no drilling, higher taxes, radical friends near the White House, China, trade, religious freedoms, right to life, etc., etc. Obama is the total destruction plan not Palin being near the button as some want to infer.

See? No evidence that “Shamnesty” is the very core of McCain’s being, but he’ll regurgitate this same bile that he always has and always will. Also, no evidence that republicans will roll over and play dead if McCain wants to destroy America, also as is MB4’s fantasy. I wonder if he’ll still be around here after the election.
As PierreLegrand pointed out:
So it makes you wonder who’s script MB4, Valiant and others are following. It just makes you wonder.

Not if he keeps our troops stuck in
LodiIraq with his Iraqi centric view of things.“The more McCain talks — about wicked “speculators,” about how he reveres ANWR as much as the Grand Canyon, about adjusting the planet’s thermostat, etc. — the more conservatives cling to judicial nominees as a reason for supporting him. But now another portion of his signature legislation has been repudiated by the court as an affront to the First Amendment, and again Roberts and Alito have joined the repudiation. Yet McCain promises to nominate jurists like them. Is that believable?”

Palin can be “mavericky” in a different way. If she truly believes in border enforcement first then she can say so. She doesn’t have to be 100% in sync with McCain. In fact, she’ll earn more street cred if she sticks to her own beliefs.

Much of that time we had a Republican house and senate, and since most people calling it to protest an amnesty would be Republican. A Democrat Congress might be less inclined to listen to us, and more inclined to assume their democrat constituents would support an amnesty.

You do seem to wonder a lot in between calling names and wanting to get people who don’t agree with you banned, although you have cooled down on that lately, although not voluntarily. And all your wondering never seems to get you any place though, other than to make you more paranoid.

Good point. Kinda defuses AP’s concerns. Let’s hope McCain sees it the same way :)

It’s the self-defeating self-indulgence of “principles” too common on the Right in America. They see political activism as something merely to express their own particular agenda, rather than as a long-term, calculated effort to move society and the community in the direction they believe it should go. They want instant gratification, and when it’s not forthcoming, they complain, and do so in ways counter to what they say they want done.
For some, expressing the ideas is more important to many of them actually getting any of them implemented. Short-sighted at best, but in reality, self-indulgent. For some, it’s a sense of conscience (which is why the Left has less of a problem with this–they have no conscience), and they honestly believe they have to make such statements in order to be honest. Nevermind we all suffer as a result.
Their actions may make things worse, but they’re content with themselves. They think they’re doing the Lord’s work in crying aloud and sparing not, but the Lord will hold them accountable for the people and communities they hurt.

Did you once incur VinyFoxy’s “wrath” on another web site per chance?

Resisting culture changing levels of immigration is, in my mind, a conservative concern, so I don’t assume that people with that opinion are KOS plants, but you do. After the November election rolls past, and people like MB4 and Valiant are still here, are you going to apologize for calling them plants, or are you just going to say they’re damn good plants?
