Captain Earmark twice sought millions in pork for nonprofit chaired by top fundraiser
posted at 4:50 pm on September 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
Not only isn’t this a mortal sin, given the nature of the project — a new projector for the city planetarium — it hardly qualifies as a venial one. But since the media has decided that penny ante nonsense like per diems to which Palin was legally entitled are newsworthy blows to her reputation as a reformer, let’s take a minute once again to rub Hopenchange’s face in the giant pile of pork he’s spent his entire political career peddling. Before suddenly changing his mind this year, that is.
Question to lefties eager to wave this away as an example of a virtuous earmark: If Obama’s all about funneling money to projects that improve the public good, why then impose a blanket “no earmarks” rule for 2009? That almost makes him look like a cynical opportunist seeking to coopt McCain’s anti-earmark reputation for purposes of getting elected.
Almost.
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama tried to direct more than $3 million in taxpayer funds to a Chicago museum whose chairman is one of the Illinois senator’s largest campaign fundraisers…
The planetarium’s chairman, then and still, is Frank Clark, chief executive of ComEd, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Energy. He has pledged to raise more than $200,000 for Mr. Obama’s run for the White House.
Moreover, the Adler Planetarium is represented by the lobbying firm National Group LLP, co-founded by William Oldaker, who helped launch Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s political action committee in 2005. Mr. Oldaker, a partner with the Delaware Democrat’s son in another Washington lobbying and law firm, is no longer involved with Mr. Biden’s PAC, Unite Our States…
Two years earlier, Mr. Obama sought $300,000 for the Adler in another unsuccessful earmark request.
Speaking of earmarks, did you know that Palin wasn’t even involved in two of the three pork requests secured by Wasilla that were criticized by McCain back in 2001? Of course you weren’t. Most of the media’s reporting on that looks like this, with only the Nelson Muntz sound effect missing.
Exit question: Which wingnut McCain water-carrier said this?
“The reality is, governors every day have to make decisions for better or for worse. That’s part of the job. It’s an executive position. And it’s a position that is like what you’re going to do when you’re president. Legislators, they do different things. They debate and they pass their bills back and forth,” he said.
“But governors make decisions, and I think it’s a tactical mistake for the Democrats to question Gov. Palin’s experience when she’s been a governor of a state,” he said. “I don’t think the size of the state is relevant. It’s the kinds of decisions you have to make as governor.”

Someone suggested on another thread that Gov. Palin challenge ZerObama to a debate. I wish it would happen, if for no other reason than to see ZerO look like the true BozO he is.

You can’t blame Obama for all the earmarks. He has proportionately larger ears.

That’s how corruption works. What do these idiots in the press need to believe there’s corruption going on? Do they expect a signed contract?

Hey, AP, when are we going to have a discussion on whether or not earmarks are a bad thing?
trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 5:02 PM
The problem with earmarks like this is they all add up. Pretty quickly there are billions of virtuous and not so virtuous earmarks. Instead of raising $200,000 for Obama Clark should collect it for the museum.

How did the Captain Earmarks name come about? It always makes me think of the children’s book, Captain Underpants, and I think of Obama in a red cape and underwear trying to fly around with big ears.

They’re bad because they’re hidden (in committee reports and such, not in the actual legislation) and they’re not voted on.
Allocating money with accountability, good. Earmark, bad.

And there is no accounting as to whether the earmarks accomplish anything. Some of Murtha’s earmarks go to companies that may not even really exist.

it is surreal….

Im sorry, but as a military Vet I think using CAPTAIN earmark is offensive to Vets…
Obama is about as Non and anti military as they come… and Captain is a military rank, and position of Command… neither of which Bambi has ever held…
Now… he is Eliteist, and seems to think he’s entitled… so SIR Earmark? Count Earmark? somthing doing with the Aristocracy would be more appropriate…
Just my opinion.
Romeo13 on September 11, 2008 at 5:08 PM
And there is no bidding. So you don’t even know if there is another company who can provide the service cheaper and/or better.
Also, since (for instance) earmarks take money out of the EPA budget, the agency that best knows how to spend its money is hamstrung by people just trying to grift.
Why is there a debate as to whether they are good or not?
Want to build something in your city or state. Fund it by your city or state. What’s the difficulty?
lorien1973 on September 11, 2008 at 5:09 PM
I think you mean that it is a venial (=forgivable) one.
Tzetzes on September 11, 2008 at 5:12 PM
Ok, that’s three million out of the 740 million Baracky has requested over the years, where did the rest of it go?
Bishop on September 11, 2008 at 5:15 PM
Why is there debate? Because oftimes earmarks are the only way small states without powerful ways and means members can get back some of the $ we sent the feds in the first place. If we didn’t have to send so much to DC, we could do more in our own back yards.
Plus, earmarks are not necessarily ‘hidden’, and the ones I know of still have to follow federal bidding, NEPA, air quality, etc, rules as any other fed funds.

I think what you and I might consider a disaster, they would consider an achievement. And if America is taken down an peg or ten in the world, so much the better. I don’t think they want to preserve the country.
I don’t know a Democrat who I would believe saying those words.

Article: “The planetarium’s chairman, then and still, is Frank Clark, chief executive of ComEd, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Energy. He has pledged to raise more than $200,000 for Mr. Obama’s run for the White House.”
Just googled this fact to verify: William Ayers’ father used to be CEO of ComEd. That’s how his son got his job at the University of Illinois (at Chicago).
alwyr on September 11, 2008 at 5:25 PM
That’s really a problem of small states voting in senators who keep wanting to raise your taxes, now isn’t it?
lorien1973 on September 11, 2008 at 5:26 PM
That’s a very simplistic way of thinking about what is in reality more complex and less of a problem than is often thought.
More likely a problem of big states voting in senators who want to do little BUT raise taxes. Oh let me guess which ones…maybe New York? Perhaps California? Those are big states, right?
trailboss on September 11, 2008 at 5:30 PM
I looked at the $190M earmark rquests for the state of Alaska for 2009 and about $165M or so were for compliance with Federal legislation, international treaties (about fish no less) and other unfunded mandates. It makes sense for Alaska to be asking for the funds.
Aaron K on September 11, 2008 at 5:32 PM
My point, pretty much exactly. While earmarks are at times sought for inappropriate purposes, such as ‘ahem, rewards to hard working planetarium staff, ahem’, it is in fact our congressional reps go to bat for much needed funds for specific projects that really don’t fit under any of the major programs. Or that are unfunded by the major programs.

Damiano on September 11, 2008 at 5:41 PM
These examples are great, but I simply don’t understand why McCain is not crucifying Obama for the following.
In 2004, Michelle Obama received a salary from University of Chicago Hospital of $121,910.
In November 2004, Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate.
In 2005, Michelle received a salary from University of Chicago Hospital of $316,962.
In 2006, Obama arranges for a $1,000,000 earmark back to University of Chicago Hospital.
Can somebody fricking explain why this isn’t an issue that is shoved in Obama’s face at every turn? This is an extraordinary conflict of interest that any taxpayer can get his or her mind around.

They can do 4 years of damage minimum and maybe 8 tops. Sooner or later the “massive moderate middle will do their Bambi routine and say ‘ENOUGH!’….” Believe me Americans would rather be powerful than have a nanny state when the chips are down. We had this argument once.
The media are desperately trying to use and cultivate their power to manipulate the public perception of political winds. Their screeching on Palin has damaged them as much as their running interference for Clinton did. Succeeding in getting Bambi in with a chainsaw nuking America will destroy what’s left of their believability.

Loxodonta on September 11, 2008 at 6:21 PM
Are earmarks bad? Obama himself said that the process invites corruption and needs to be reformed. That’s why he said he won’t ask for any earmarks in 2009. Of course, that was after he decided to run for president — and after he’d spent his first 3 years in the Senate fully participating in this corrupt process and running up an earmark request tab of 3/4 of a Billion dollars.
Change you can believe in — as soon as it becomes politically convenient for Obama, that is.
