Bill Clinton to the rescue?

Barack Obama met with Bill Clinton this afternoon after his joint visit to Ground Zero with John McCain in a first response to his post-convention deflation.  The two men managed to put a brave face on their mutual distrust after Obama’s hat-in-hand pilgrimage to South Harlem.  In the end, Clinton agreed to rescue campaign for Obama in Florida and perhaps elsewhere … but he didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about it:

Clinton kept his answers short when he was asked about his involvement with Obama’s campaign this fall. The former president noted an already-announced trip Sept. 29 to Florida.

Obama said, “We’re putting him to work.”

Asked if he would be doing more, Clinton said, “I’ve agreed to do a substantial number of things, whatever I’m asked to do.”

Before reporters were ushered out, Clinton was asked where he sees the race between Obama and Republican John McCain.

“I predict that Sen. Obama will win and win pretty handily,” he said.

Clinton kept his answers short?  Bill Clinton?  This is the man who could answer “Good morning” with a two-minute dissertation on politics.  If he emerged from the meeting in a quiet mood, that doesn’t exactly scream enthusiasm.

Obama liked the prediction, too, but he’d do well to remember that Clinton predicted a large Gore win, and an easy victory for Kerry as well.

At least this shows that Obama knows his campaign is in trouble.  He needs the Clintons more than he would admit before.  Bill still has some gas left in the tank, although he got in Hillary’s way more often than he helped her.  Eugene Robinson wrote about it for the Washington Post in December:

Bill Clinton has always had a way of making himself the story, and he’s at it again.

When the Clintons made a campaign stop at an Iowa grocery store Tuesday, Hillary’s face said it all. She realized that Bill had departed from the script and wandered off to another part of the store, and cameras caught her scanning the aisles with a look of sheer terror. Bill was supposed to be at Hillary’s side; instead, he was way over yonder, giving an interview to “Entertainment Tonight.” What was supposed to be a controlled photo op had suddenly turned into a happening.

Spontaneity gives ulcers to campaign staffers, but the supermarket stop got much more coverage than it would have if Bill had followed the script. He ended up drawing more attention to himself than the candidate — which is in keeping with his formal campaign speeches. On the stump, he draws big crowds and comes off as charming, eloquent and persuasive. But reporters who have tallied his words say that he talks more about himself than about his wife — at a ratio of about 9 to 1.

Obama really doesn’t have any other choice but to get Bill involved at this point — he’s made a mess of the campaign over the summer and has lost the “New Politics” edge altogether.  He has to hope that Bill will feel motivated to play kingmaker and will make the Obama case, rather than remind people what they could have had with a Hillary Clinton nomination.  Given Bill’s inability to stay on message for his own wife’s benefit, though, how much can Obama rely on Bill sublimating his own ego-stroking to boost Obama?

Wait….Baracky is turning to a racist to get his message across?

Bishop on September 11, 2008 at 6:24 PM

Hey, what’s the over/under on the number of days until Bill Clinton says “accidentally” says something sexist/racist/stupid that reflects really badly on the Obama campaign and makes it more likely Hillary can run in 2012 after a McCain victory in November?

I say 10 days, or whenever it will hurt Obama the most, whichever comes first.

Do I have any takers?

nemecizer on September 11, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Perfect situation for Rush to give one of his impromptu Clinton imitations and recall the contents of the meeting. Hope he’s got it on tap for tomorrow.

Bubba must have reamed Barry’s ass. What a dumb cow asking Clinton for help. Would be even better if Bill asked him to the meeting just to make it look like Barry was asking for help. The whole thing would make a great skit.

Bet bill had this tiny stool in front of his desk for Obama to sit on. Hope Bill was smoking a cigar.

Heh. Clinton will forget what he’s doing and start talking about himself at every stop he makes for Obama. He may even inadvertantly endorse Hillary when he starts talking about experience. He is bound to subconciously undermine Obama. Yet Obama has no choice. The PUMA’s are smiling.

so now obama wants the clintons help?

the clintons wont give much help. they want him to lose.

Let’s hope Billy keeps his record intact and goes 3 for 3.

Let’s also hope that Billy “helps” Obama just as much as he “helped” Hillary on the campaign trail.

Jive-talkin’ Bill
Hand-wonderin’ Bill

Old Coot McCain was tryin’ to stuff The One into a pig skin sack
He said, “If you don’t give me the deed to the Presidency
I’m gonna have Lipstick Sarah shoot you like a moose right in your tracks!”
And then he grabbed him (and then)
He tied him up (and then)
He threw him right in front of Lipstick Sarah’s tracks (and then)
Lipstick Sarah started comin’ (and then, and then…!)

And then along came Bill!

Bill must have had an s-eating grin during lunch, just enjoying watching Obama kiss up to him. I wonder if Bill reminded him that sometimes you need to kiss a pig in lipstick to get what you want.

grdred944 on September 11, 2008 at 7:18 PM

The McCain Campaign Committee has to be grinning from ear to ear, thinking of all those videos of Bill Clinton at various Hillary rallies, putting down B.O. every single place he went.

They must also be thinking of all the wonderful ads they can put together from all that footage.

pilamaye on September 11, 2008 at 7:20 PM

So Obama the condescending, sexist has now employed the biggest predatory misogynist on the world stage to help him beat an Arctic Fox from Alaska. Hmmmm…demeaning, dismissive, Sweetie’s will be thrown around like butta! They are gonna lose bad!

JAM on September 11, 2008 at 7:21 PM

This will be the final nail in Obama’s political coffin. BJ hates Obama with the same kind of passion he love’s himself. Obama just smoked the Clinton’s plan. Obama was supposed to let Hillary have her time, her moment in history. Hillary got beat by the black rookie empty suit, and while doing so, the Clinton’s got slapped around pretty good with some good ol’ fashioned Chicago thuggery.

No freakin way BJ is going to take this butt whipping without issuing the final blow. (strictly my opinion, no facts to back this up with).

grdred944 on September 11, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Impressive how quickly this was swept all of a sudden off the MSM. Not to beat a dead horse pig comment, but before they distract us all and move on, let’s remember that Beckel started it the day before (like he started the Michelle “Whitey” rumor to distract the press from Rezco’s conviction). The following day a democrat introduced Biden (referring also to phrase). Then Biden referred to it. Then Obama cleared the bases later that afternoon. They were astroturfing the base. It was as purposeful as when he flipped Hillary the bird. The arrogance is staggering. The free pass from the press is appalling…

Unfortunately, Obama doesn’t have enough sense to do that (throw Billy under the bus for a mis-statement).

I don’t believe for a second there will be a mis-statement, but a significantly calculated statement that will be an October Surprise – sure to make Mrs. a lock for 2012.

Think so? I’m not so sure he does when it comes to getting votes for Obama. Not only does the sudden campaigning for Obama by Clinton make the effort seem lame but, in fact, it is the wrong Clinton! Obama needs to have Hillary out there rallying her feminists and getting them to vote Democrat. He doesn’t need Bill out there doing the same half-hearted job he did for his own wife (ignoring all the attacks he made about Obama when she was running).

It is too late to save Obama now, and the Clintons know it (he till has not given any real specifics on the change he wishes to bring – change from what to what?) so they just play along not damage their reputation with the democratic party further. This is non-news. Obama is in a conundrum – drop Biden and get Hillary on board – he would come out as an unreliable opportunist and one with poor judgement at that. Keeping Biden and see his candidacy slowly sink with one Biden gaffe after the other. The wise thing would be to do the latter, because the only small thing that could save him is that McCain dies before the election.
