Wolves: The scene from Anchorage

Earlier this morning, I had an opportunity to speak with a source in the Anchorage area, one familiar with state government agencies and the lay of the political landscape in Alaska. Apparently, Team Obama has officially denied sending an army of oppo researchers to Alaska, as John Fund reported yesterday in the Wall Street Journal. I’m not certain how they couched that denial as only a few references have come from Hot Air readers, but according to my source, lawyers have indeed begun scouring official records for information on Sarah Palin, and so have a plethora of reporters.
Just to make one point clear: there is nothing inherently wrong with Team Obama researching Palin’s record in public office. One may wonder why it would take as many as Fund reported, and why Obama’s campaign would spend that much money when they’re already having fundraising issues, but part of campaigning is doing exactly this kind of research. Google may have been a cheaper option, though, or even Lexis-Nexis, which would have given them access to legal documents. The number of people Fund reported indicates that they’re looking for something else.
The same goes for the media contingent. Perhaps when they’re done in Alaska, they might consider flying to Chicago to do the same due diligence they’ve neglected with Obama for nineteen months. Just a suggestion.
At any rate, this source has spoken with at least one major media outlet that plans on doing a Sarah Palin bio in the near future. They asked about Palin’s family, and have done quite a bit of research into accounting records with state agencies. One weird data point: they’ve been asking questions about Todd Palin’s sponsors for his snowmachine races. That seems like an odd path to pursue, and it may presage another all-out attack on Palins’ family — or just a better picture of Todd’s sporting pursuits.
The reporters apparently have staked out the bars in Wasilla, too. Why? Maybe they think they can get a story from the local drinkers, or maybe they just want to spend their time drinking. My source specified reporters from the Washington Post and the National Enquirer in one location making circles in one Wasilla bar, hitting up the locals for interesting information, and apparently without much success.
It’s not just reporters, either. Even in Anchorage, natives can spot outsiders quickly — especially this time of year, because they overdress for the weather and stick out like sore thumbs. Alaskans have seen groups of lawyers making the state-agency circuit, looking for information on Palin. Whether they work for Obama or the Democratic Party, or maybe a 527, my source did not say — but the assumption is that they’re with Obama, which makes the most sense, as he has the lion’s share of Democratic contributions.
I asked how Alaskans have reacted to this, and the answer was with amused contempt. They’re hoping to see the circus leave town, and quickly. Palin remains a very popular figure there and she has gained a tremendous amount of sympathy for her treatment over the last two weeks. This source has worked with Palin on occasion, and sees her as “totally ethical”, “genuine”, the same person in private as in public, and one of the nicest people in public service. Palin made plenty of enemies, but that’s the risk reformers take.
Wolves are probably the correct analogy, as the McCain ad suggested. No one objects to a fair look at Palin’s record in public office, but it seems unlikely that reporters and oppo researchers are looking for that in Wasilla bars.

Liberals always look for a smoking gun to use against conservatives.
Problem: Liberals have no idea how to use a gun if they stumble upon one.

All the talk about Wasilly, and just a small town, probably did not make Obama and company really popular with the locals either.

They want to know about the sponsers for the snow mobile races? Are they expect it might be, ummm I don’t know, white supremists or something. What kind of sponsor could have a political motive? Someone should do interviews of the Wolves and ask them what they hope to find.

I only object only because the media has not given one ounce of inspection as they have Palin in such a short time.
Get the feeling that Palin’s appeal has a little to do with being able to vote against the media?

Exactly Ed.. This is the real story here. These folks have had 19 months to complete the vetting process on Obama, but have yet to begin. Until they work both sides of the campaign, they are all proving the theory that the MSM is actually part of the DNC; one in the same. This is also why Obama could go to the MSM this morning and declare “enough is enough”, you a**holes work for me, and I’m not going to allow you to give those damn Republicans an entire days headlines again, enough is enough!
Keemo on September 10, 2008 at 2:49 PM
I know that the town is called Wasilla. Wasilly is what Obama called it back when he was dismissing Palin as being just a former mayor of a small town.

This in many ways, is the funny part.
Had the media been this dedicated in vetting Obama, he never would have been the nominee, and wouldn’t be in the process of flaming out and taking many Democrats with him.

I think whomever Ed’s source is, said it all for Alaskans!

I’ll bet you any money the low-lifes are trying to pin ‘Big Oil’ on Palin by going after the sponsors of Todd’s races. In Alaska it would be normal to be sponsored by an oil company. (The Horror!!!)

Meric1837 on September 10, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Hyenas are what I was thinking too, but I guess wolves go better with the Alaska theme. Speaking of which, last night CNN was running and re-running old footage of people shooting wolves from an airplane. And yes, they were going on and on about Palin’s approval of culling wolves.
forest on September 10, 2008 at 3:11 PM
They won’t say because they don’t know. This is a fishing expedition hoping to find “something.” Government contracts for snowmobile sponsorships, smoking gun memo from troopergate, disgruntled state worker with a grudge against Gov. Palin, even a classmate of Bristol Palin willing to dish about the kids. These Dem slimeballs and “journalists” are looking for anything they can.
highhopes on September 10, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Hyenas are matriarchal in structure. They certainly would have significantly more respect for an alpha female like Gov. Palin than the Alaskan invaders.
It will take some thought to come up with an apropriate analog in the animal kingdom.

I come from a small town and before anybody there opened their mouth I could tell you what lies would come out of which mouths and why.
But the rest of America is really going to need the locals’ voices to keep the stories honest. Are your suspected sources likely to affix their names to any of these claims?
Also, isn’t there drug testing before someone can enlist? I’ve heard that Obama probably couldn’t pass a security clearance to enlist, because of his ongoing ties with a known unrepentant terrorist. And at age 19 he couldn’t have passed a drug test either.

YES you do have to do a drug test. Piss Test (as the Military calls it) for Pot and then you also get a Drug sweep, where they take blood for other items.. downers, uppers, everything. In that process, they also do a STD/AID’s test. If you do not tell them on your forms at MEPS that you have taken anything which includes vitamins and ammino acids, you CAN get kicked out.
As for asking the people of Palmer and a couple people from Wasilla about the News media and Sarah, I will use their names, if they allow.

Upinak – thank you. Having been stationed up there for 8 years (Valdez & Cordova) I can only imagine how these cheechakos are finding the place. One camp wants America to believe the residents of Alaska are just small town people with small town values and a small town intelligence (Michelle O’s remarks point that direction).
Well, the first two may be true when compared to the Hollyweird nuts. The latter however is far from true. Alaskans have grit, common sense and savvy. Shoot, you can’t call roadside service if you get a flat in Chitna (used to love the bluegrass festival).

Follow up with Sarah Palin welcoming them to Alaska and asking if they’re finally going to go to Chicago next.

What they don’t find they will make up. Their job is to weave a narrative that hopefully puts Palin on the defensive for a week or two in a mad attempt to to buy Obama some time to regain his footing. The October surprise gambit.
However that haunting sound they keep hearing in the back of their heads is Howard Cosell in broadcasting the “thriller from Wasilla” as he jumps up and screams, “Down goes Obama”.

Hmm, I think that the difficulty in finding an apropriate animal analog is that everyting mentioned so far in some way has more significance or noble characteristic than the invaders looking for dirt on Gov. Palin.
Spruce Bark Beetles – Actually cause damage, they will not.
Vultures/Buzzards – Actually thrive on rotting things, these folks will not find anything rotten to eat.
Ravens – Actually too intelligent to become embroilled in things dangerous, these folks are going to cause danger for the Obama camp by going too petty.
Hyenas – Too respectful of females
Wolves – Too noble.
Lugworms – Only marine biologists would recognize one, so not a very gripping choice, but I still think not bad.
I’m starting to think more along the lines of the parasites that cause Amoebic dysentery. Because:
1. Parasite that has no real shape
2. You KNOW when you have it.
3. You’re glad to get rid of it.

I’ve often wondered how the tabloids get past the libel suits they should have against them.
I actually hope Troopergate gets high-profile coverage simply because Mike Wooten seems to have verbalized the dems’ game plan, hook, line, and sinker. He said he would bring down anybody who sided against him by accusing them falsely, knowing that the establishment would side with him.
That’s exactly what Henry Waxman and Congressional dems have been doing for the last 2 years. It’s what Mike Nifong did to the Duke lacrosse team and what Ronnie Earle did to Tom DeLay.
The mainstream media is part of that establishment, and their world will be swept away if some no-name “hicks” in Alaska are able to tell the whole world that the establishment media is naked. If the media and crooked politicians can truly be exposed by us little guys, Washington may just turn upside-down. And that’s more change than any of them wants.
This is definitely a David and Goliath battle, and the very fact that the truth has a chance to be heard is a breath of fresh air.

We are conservative Americans. We wish to make the United States a truly free and truly prosperous republic. Your liberal political philosophy will be defeated and assimilated into the mainstream of normal American life. Obama’s political strength is overestimated and irrelevant. He will be defeated in November. Our victory is inevitable.
Resistance is futile.
