With Obama reeling, Clintons not motivated to assist
posted at 10:30 am on September 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
The Clintons would appear to give Barack Obama everything he needs in surrogates — experience, a natural constituency, and in Hillary a strong female presence to counteract Sarah Palin. Thus far, though, the Clintons have remained on the sidelines, with Hillary expressly declining opportunities to attack Palin. This disconnect comes from unhealed divisions from the primaries, ironically in the same vein as the recent Palin meltdown for Team Obama, and is unlikely to be resolved soon:
With the McCain campaign running tactical circles every day around the Obama outfit—which has failed, somewhat unbelievably, to come up with even a semi-compelling response to the Palin selection—one might think Mrs. Clinton, to say nothing of her sidelined husband, would be a useful surrogate on the counterattack right about now. Apparently, the Obama campaign does not agree.
“My concern is that I see them as totally reactive right now as opposed to getting out there on their own and saying what the hell they are about,” said Leon Panetta, a former chief of staff to Bill Clinton who has advised Mr. Obama. “They seem to be intimidated by the Palin pick. They seem to be intimidated by how the Republicans are coming at them on change. And you cannot win if you are constantly on defense.”
Mr. Panetta added, “As president of the United States you are going to have to learn how to deal with people you may not particularly like, because if you are trying to get things done, you have got to use everything and everybody that you can to get it done. I do think that they absolutely in this race have got to make use of the Clintons in every possible way, because they need them. He has clearly got some problems out there.”
That’s the catch-22 for the Obama campaign. As much as he’d like to get a rescue from his present catastrophic nosedive, Obama knows that he can’t ask it of Hillary Clinton. To publicly acknowledge her as his last, desperate hope would be to admit that he shouldn’t have won the primaries in the first place, and that the superdelegates made a huge mistake in selecting him over Hillary. Also, it would look like the ultimate hypocrisy to demand that Hillary become his attack dog after ignoring her for the position of running mate.
Joe Biden has the job of attack dog, anyway. That supposedly was one of the reasons Obama picked him — because Biden would fight where Obama wanted to rise above the fray. So far, Biden’s made an absolute mess of it, insinuating yesterday that Palin didn’t really love her infant son because she didn’t back embryonic stem-cell research, without actually finding out what her position was first.
And why would Hillary feel like lending a hand? Jason Horowitz sums up the problem succinctly:
Either way, the fact that it has taken so long for this discussion about the Clintons’ role to occur—while polls show a sharp shift in support toward the Republican ticket—is a source of wonderment in Clintonland. The consensus there, based on conversations with present and former Clinton advisers, is that the Obama campaign has isolated itself both as a result of its desire to break with the Clintons and establish itself as the future of the Democratic Party, and out of primary-victory-inspired hubris.
Obama wanted nothing to do with the Clintons. He fought against them and beat them in the primaries, although only with the Deus ex Machina effect of the superdelegates. Obama made it clear that they were the past, and he was the party’s future. In fact, when pushing back against the perception that Democrats were weak on defense in his acceptance speech, Obama pointedly ignored Bill Clinton when listing strong Democratic presidents from the past. That was less than two weeks ago, and the Clintons remember slights for years.
Now Panetta wants Obama to hide behind Hillary’s skirts in response to the strong woman on the Republican ticket. Somehow, I doubt that Obama can bring himself to make the kind of admission that requires, which would all but tell voters he’s not ready for the office. And Hillary, with her eyes now on 2012, has little reason to volunteer.

Catching a falling dagger can get messy. Hillary only got a small taste of what they are doing to Sarah. What sane person would want to assist these two complete frauds.

This is absolutely beautiful and it will come back to haunt her in 2012. A lot of ‘bots will not forget this “betrayal” and simply won’t show up to support Senator Clinton in her next run.
I think the Dems have inadvertently done some real damage to their party with all the identity politics this season.

One thing that is coming to define Obama, is his strong sense of insecurity.
You see it when he couldn’t bring himself to offer the VP position to the candidate who almost beat him.
You see it when he almost hysterically tries to defend the position of “community organizer”.
You see it when he ignores the fact that Palin is a sitting governor, and concentrates instead on her years as a “small town mayor”.
If McCain/Palin can continue pounding on this insecurity, eventually he will melt down completely.

If Hillary continues to pander to Obama she could irreparably damage her political future. So far it appears she has learned that if your going to toy with a rattlesnake, do it with a very long stick and be prepared to run like hell.

Hillary is the most powerful person in the country right now.
She can end Barry with a single press conference.
All she has to do is say, “Barack has a pattern of sexist and misogynistic attacks on women with any power.”
“PUMAs ATTACK!”
and the race is over tomorrow.

I love it. Obama’s immature handlers handled the Clinton’s like dog meat, and now that then need Don Pablo Clinton, he’s sipping on an iced tea watching Obama go down in flames.
This is what happens when you combine high school politics with presidential politics.
bloghooligan on September 10, 2008 at 10:40 AM
This is why the you won’t see Obama drop Biden – Hillary would never be his VP – that ship sailed awhile ago.
The Clintons, as we all now, are solely about themselves, so the question is not “what is best for the Democrat party”, but “what is best for Hillary.”
If Obama wins then there is no chance that Hillary will ever be president (she won’t be able to get any traction running against an incumbent president in 2012 and 2016 is just too far away.)
However, if Obama loses then Hillary becomes the instant Democrat front runner for 2012.
As us math geeks say – Q.E.D.

Obama cut the Clinton’s out a long long time ago.
The Dean Party cut the Clinton’s out as well, albeit more recently.
Obama loses in 2008.
In 2012, Hillary steps up and says “I told you so. Now, let’s run a real campaign on the issues.”
In 2012, Hillary loses.
But, by that time, Obama will be a distant long forgoten memory.
Come 2016, Hillary will be a Halloween story told by our kids to our grandchildren.

artlover on September 10, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Many people called this one months ago… including the Clinton’s themselves.
Obama is not qualified to be President and they are only doing what is required to support their party.
That said, I think that it is a mistake to poke them with a stick. It will only serve to prompt them into more decisive statements (see the DNC).
Everyone figured that the Clinton’s would put on their dog and pony show at the DNC, then pretty much go away. The more Hillary is in the spotlight, the weaker Obama looks. It only reinforces that she was correct and he is unqualified and cannot win this election on his own.

Barack doesn’t deserve Clinton’s help. He quietly supported the sexist treatment Hillary suffered, with the entire democratic party and the press exacerbating the treatment. I wouldn’t help him either if I was Hillary…he’s not a friend of hers, and he is NO gentleman…not too presidential.

After this weekend, after the 48 hours Gibson has with Palin, if all goes well, this dream will turn into an Obama and DNC nightmare.

I bet Obama tried–and she delayed her decision (knowing it would be no) to cause him grief (hence the late and botched VP announcement).
Seriously–I can’t believe Obambi would have done the cell phone message gimmick if he had Biden in mind all along — although his subsequent use of the cell phone list for robo-donation-calls may indicate otherwise.
And on that note, I know that if John McCains campaign pulled that cell phone gimmick then called me for donations, I wouldn’t vote for him. I despise telemarkerters, and I positively hate telemarketers who get a hold of my cell phone.
I bet a lot of Democrats were pissed when they realized Obama tricked them into a calll-list scam.

Obama’s current situation and Hillary’s potential role reminds me of a hypothetical my high school health-class teacher posed on water safety: “What do you do when someone is drowning?” Students sympathetically answered, “Oh, you dive in to save them.” “Oh, you throw them an object to help them stay afloat.” “Oh, you call for help.”
The teacher’s response: “Other than calling for help, you wave ‘goodbye.’” Although students were mortified at the grim advice, he quickly cited statistics that reported the number of deaths among people who try to save drowning people.
Obama seems close to drowning. Last week, Hillary was deployed to Florida. But after the first part of this week, if I were Hillary, I’d think hard about walking away. Obama keeps shooting himself in the foot. In many respects, his campaign is doing the same thing to Palin as it did to Hillary. I don’t know about the fallout for her with Democrats, but I don’t care. Obama has run a lousy enough general election campaign that she doesn’t have to wait to the election to say “I told you so.” Perhaps, she might wait until after the first Obama-McCain debate and after the Biden-Palin debate, but I bet she walks if those don’t go well.

Uber liberal changeling David Gergen actually said it perfectly last night on Anderson Cooper’s show. Paraphrasing, he said it’s so ironic that Obama finds himself in the parallel position of Hillary last January when she was the presumptive nominee, about to be coronated when all the sudden here comes this phenom out of left field to steal her thunder and pull the rug out. The Hillary campaign was caught completely unpreprared for Obama and reeled trying to get footing against him until it was too late. Hillary bloodied herself in the process and she was thrown out with the trash. Sound familiar?
Anyone who thinks HRC will come to BHO’s rescue at this point is still dreaming that Biden will suddenly fall ill and be unable to complete the race.

The same reason Obama and his people won’t admit the “lipstick” comment was a screw up is the same reason they’ve backed themselves into a corner as far as getting the Clintons’ help goes — Barack can’t bring himself to admit he was wrong, and the campaign and its hardcore followers can’t admit (in public) The One is not perfect. So anytime between June 3 and Aug. 21 when they could have had a rapprochement with the Clintons, they acted as though they didn’t need their support, and with the most recent comment, they can’t admit Obama is even a careless, if not bad, speaker when he doesn’t have a teleprompter in front of him.
And the media — even those disposed towards the Clintons — can’t admit the obvious because they’re either equally in the tank for the infallibility of The Anointed, or even if they wanted to point it out, they’ve invested so much capital into the idea that Bad Extemporaneous Speaker=Idiot for the past 40 years with Republican officials (Ford, Reagan, Quayle, Bush 43), that to say Barack bumbles when he talks off-the-cuff makes them afraid they’ll be accused of covert racism in equating Obama’s mind to that of those obvious morons like GWB or Quayle.

What amazes me is the ineptitude of the entire Democrat party process. Let’s assume for a minute that Obama hadn’t been “selected vs elected” and Hillary actually got the nomination. She could pick the young up-start as her VP for mentoring and guidance. The HuffPo article from July describing Obama’s inevitability would have been true about Hillary.
Instead, they’ve completely shattered any anti-Bush solidarity that would have handed them the election on a silver platter and possibly damaged the Democrat party beyond any future repair.
Mind you, I’m not complaining.

Look, if she is so smart and savvy and influential, why couldn’t she lick someone running just on words and with no backbone (voting present 160 times)? She can’t even manage her campaign finance and we are supposed to believe she will be able to handle the economy. Give me a break.

She wants to watch him implode like the rest of us, who could blame her? This is fun.

Reminds me of Queen Gorgo stabbing Theron in the belly at the end of “300″.

The problem for Obama/Biden is that, if they do go out and tell the American voters what the hell they are about (higher taxes, bigger government, weaker national defense, etc.), then they’ll get blown away in November.

I wrote in my blog last week that Obama needed to dump Bidem and pick Kathleen Sebelius before it was too late. Hillary absolutely won’t help him and is alreaady looking towards 2012. Obama needs to do something radical or he is cooked.

Hillary knows better than to help by now. Obama’s judgment, beyond being a mirror to sell himself as being smart, is pathetic. These last several days have shown that even when when faced with a crisis of an every day standard variety, Obama is not ready to lead.
A couple of things Hillary probably realizes.
One, Obama’s presidency would be a debacle, not so much for the country but for the Dem Party. That leaves her chances in 2012 dead in the water.
Two, even if she did help, it wouldn’t save Obama’s butt because, while she can control her message, she can’t control Obama’s and again brings it back to his losing big time because of his poor judgment.
Working hard for the party gets you nothing in the primaries and not doing so doesn’t hurt you much at all. What matters is working for the people in the party and that’s what Hillary says she plans on doing for national and local candidates. Hillary will pay some lip service to Obama’s run, but she’s working on 2012 with the expectation that Obama is going to lose. When he does, he’ll be finished for a long time if not all together.

I love that confused Obama cocked-head pose in the pic.

RE: The O’Reilly interview – Hussein came of like he was arguing with a skeptical loan officer for a car loan or something. Not real presidential.
If he were now to grovel before Hellary (a troubling image…) he would not only lose whatever presidential aura he might have left, but Hellary would fulfill Jesse’s wish regarding the Hussein family jewels and drive off with them dangling from her rearview mirror.
Stick a spork in him.

Biden? Isn’t he some Senator from some small state in NE i think i read about him trying to carve Iraq into 3 little states instead of winning the war

The cream rises to the top, and Obama is turning out to be curd. The only reason he got elected to the Senate is because his oponent in the primary got caught in a sex scandal, and his opponent in the general also got caught in a sex scandal. He won by default.
He is a softie

OT: Did anyone else think the one must have watched ‘The American President’ last night? His remarks sounded oddly familiar to this listener.

One of these mornings, soon, Obama is going to wake up and walk into his empty echo-chamber campaign headquarters and find custodians sweeping the floor, as the last of the Office-Rental trucks pull away from the curb.
He’ll look at his blackberry and find it is September, International Update Your Resume Month.
