Video: Shep jumps on Democrat for “age dig” at McCain

posted at 10:05 pm on September 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Gateway Pundit, I missed the memo on why it’s somehow unfair to talk about Maverick’s age, especially now that he’s got a would-be VP with as terrifyingly little experience as, um, Barack Obama. Explain it to me in the comments. In the meantime, as a complement to the exchange here about Democratic disarray, enjoy Politico’s round-up tonight of liberals on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Imagine their surprise to find that a guy who built his career spouting vacant Oprah-isms like “yes, we can,” is having problems delivering a “concrete message” to voters:

A major Democratic fund-raiser described it a good bit more starkly after digesting the polls of recent days: “I’m so depressed. It’s happening again. It’s a nightmare.”Adding to Democratic restlessness, McCain has largely neutralized some issue advantages that have long favored Democrats…

Yet the latest polls – and the seeming ability of Palin to instantly transform this race – would seem to indicate that voters got no overarching message from the Obama campaign other than he is a gifted, even inspirational political performer who aspires to change the country. The economic message Obama is now scrambling to hammer home was either absent or mixed in with a variety of other topics…

Yet still, the Obama campaign seems to be struggling to find a consistent, cohesive economic message. One can understand why aides would not want to muddy his mantra of change and his image as a post-partisan, revolutionary figure. But blue-collar voters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Michigan likely won’t vote for Obama because of some meta-narrative or a series of fabulous speeches.

Exit question via John Judis: We’re all so familiar with McCain’s bio that we take it for granted, but never underestimate how little the general public pays attention to stuff like that until it’s time to vote. Could the POW tributes at the convention be what’s driving Maverick’s surge in the polls?

Blowback

Of course it is fair. It’s also fair to bring up Palin’s gender. Those are real, meaningful metrics. Race — not so much. Which, actually, works against Obama. By picking Palin, McCain has made his campaign a more historically significant one than Obama’s. The first female vice president is more historically significant than the first partially non-caucasian president. Doh!

So I guess ‘change’ is calling a woman a pig and then backpeddling faster than any one ever and making up a cock and bull stork about how it’s a common phrase in Illinois. (I lived there nearly 30 years and never once heard that expression)

Obama is desperate. I also hope the DNC continues this meme of ‘who do you want? The guy who has tons of experience or the guy with “promises” of change with no experience?’ Then bringing in Palin’s inexperience at some point which only goes to further illuminate the lack of experience that Obama has.

MannyT-vA on September 11, 2008 at 3:55 AM

Either you can’t make derogatory remarks about any of these areas;
1) Age
2) Gender
3) Race
4) Sexual Orientation

..or you can make derogatory remarks about all of them.

I’m fine either way. I just want to know what the rule is.

Why is it that when all democrat spokespeople say stuff like that, no one is allowed to come back with wright, phlegger, ayers, rezko? America needs to understand that it isn’t the fact that barry is clueless and unexperienced, the guy is, as bill clinton put it, a typical chicago political thug.

Of course you did, because there isn’t one. There would only be a consensus that such was despicable if he was a Democrat, and we wouldn’t even need a memo then.

Just like we don’t need a memo to tell us that vague sexist allusions are horrible things directed at Hillary, but outright sexist insults are a-ok if directed at Sarah. The Dems control our media so well that even we partisans on the other side go along to a great extent.

drunyan8315 on September 11, 2008 at 5:45 AM

drunyan8315 on September 11, 2008 at 5:50 AM

I missed the memo on why it’s somehow unfair to talk about Maverick’s age…

I’ll explain it for you, Allah…

It is not unfair to for the Democrats to make snarky comments about McCain’s age. In fact, we hope the Democrats go out of their way to make as many dismissive and insulting statements about senior citizens as possible. That is why Shep was letting this idiot say “72″ over and over again.

What the Republicans are trying to do is show senior citizen voters what the Democrats think of them. They want every voter in the 65-and-up democraphic to know that Democrats consider them to be useless and demented morons with one foot in the grave. If the Democrats want to put that on billboards, I am certain the RNC would be happy to pick up the bill.

It is my fond hope that the Republicans use the opportunity to make the additional point that not only do the Democrats consider senior citizens to be a useless waste of human flesh, but they are also trying to sieze the power to ration health care. It should make every older American profoundly uncomfortable when the party that so wants to sieze the power of deciding who gets life-extending medical care also seems to think that anybody over 65 has exhausted their usefulness.

Do I have to paint a picture, here?!?

Anyone ask members of AARP what they thought about AGE?

Bicyea on September 11, 2008 at 6:29 AM

My money says that Shep “Global Warming” Smith brought it up just to make it a point, NOT to defend McCain.

Also this week, an ABC News/Washington Post poll reported that when voters are asked “who can bring about needed change to Washington,” McCain still trails Obama by 12 points. But in June, McCain trailed by 32 points.

That shift in the public’s perception of the issues, in Democratic pollster Celinda Lake’s words, “tremendously concerns me.”

What concerns me, Celinda, is that there are still so many people that believe that your candidate Obama is the one who will bring change to Washington when he has no track record of changing anything. I think it’s amazing that Obama still leads on this issue by 12 points.

eyedoc on September 11, 2008 at 6:43 AM

Speaking of age Biden is no spring chicken. He has had health problems in recent years too. And as we all know some horrid cracker Republican will try to kill Barry…at least that is what a lot of Obama supporters say. What does that mean? Nancy Pelosi as president.

That right there is reason enough to support McCain.

I think the Democrats are in trouble for a variety of reason, number one being the sorry shape of their party leadership.

Think about it. If Obama wins the four top dogs in the country will be Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid.

No wonder McCain is ahead.

Terrye on September 11, 2008 at 7:05 AM

This is so typical of the average Democratic Party creature.

First they say that the person who made the jackass comment (Fowler) rejects what she said (she said it/she rejects what she said/huh?), then they try to change the subject, in this case by going after McCain for his age.

The refreshing thing this time around is that I am noticing that more and more people are starting to see this same thing for the shenanigans that they really are, and they are getting seriously pissed at the Democrats.

pilamaye on September 11, 2008 at 7:28 AM

What is this childish “maybe she might give back the per diem money she charged the state”? I never cease to be amazed by by how unbelievably immature and petty some politicians and their sycophantic suck-ups are. These people are literally 12 year olds. Grown-ups with grade school mentality. Seriously. Is it too much to ask these jerks to act like grown men or women for a change? I am so sick of this stuff

titus_pullo on September 11, 2008 at 7:30 AM

Dick Harpootlian? Hey Obama, I guess you were wrong. Looks like voters in this bitter, mean country will elect candidates who have funny names after all.

Someone mentioned today that Obama’s father died when he was 46 and his mother when she was 54. Both of natural causes. Obama is 47. Why all the talk about McCain?
petunia on September 11, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Obama’s father did die at age 46, but it wasn’t from natural causes — unless you consider a car crash a natural cause. Obama Sr. was a chronic drunk who had a number of bad crashes in Africa, one in which he lost both his legs, before finally driving into a tree and killing himself.

Obama’s mom died of ovarian cancer. Obama, a longtime cigarette smoker, has so far released only one page of his medical records. (McCain has released something like 1200 pages of his).

AZCoyote on September 11, 2008 at 7:49 AM

After combining McCain’s mother’s age and surviving the Hanoi Hilton, McCain will live at least another 40 years.

m064404 on September 11, 2008 at 8:10 AM

Black dudes don’t live as long as white dudes. Fair to mention that?

Ronnie on September 11, 2008 at 8:40 AM

! I just had a conversation with a friend of mine. He’s not very political. Doesn’t follow much. So, I don’t talk about things much with him. But, he brought up to me how he is just now seeing the media bias. He said he has been watching CNN for about a week, off and on, and he can no longer stomach it. Asked me if I noticed it!
This is fabulous in itself.
If anything, this election season is opening eyes that were otherwise shut tight!
I’m loving it. Keep it up, Leftworld. Keep showing the world (errr..I mean the USA) exactly who you are.

The overriding mistake the dems are making: they truly believe that the American voter is some mindless drone. The dems, their leadership, and their ticket are grabbing at straws and the American voters know it!

So keep on talking like the elitist arrogant fools you are and come this November, its all gonna bite you in the butt!

Aren’t we being just a tad bit lazy today?

Criticizing a candidate for being too old is not going to go over well with our senior voters.

MarkTheGreat on September 11, 2008 at 9:34 AM

I saw that clown yesterday when he was on Shep’s show, and it completely struck me as to how pitiful is was for an OLD man to be whining that way! to be making such juvenile comments! The Dems need to stay off the air until they can gather themselves together.

Smoker. Bad role model. Cancer risk. Early death. Cost society more in insurance costs. Many companies won’t even hire smokers anymore. Restaurants won’t serve them, people shun them. All Dem policies.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to apply them to Barry, just to be fair, and show no discrimination.

Another Idiot Dem. from our state of S.C. that we have to hang our head in shame for.People please do not judge all the people of our state based on what the fools are saying!!

thmcbb on September 11, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Since it’s been revealed that pretty much Obama’s only qualification for the Presidency is that he’s relatively young, I suppose it would behoove the Obama campaign to play up his only strength relative to McCain.

Pretty small beer though.

NoDonkey on September 11, 2008 at 10:28 AM

In 2005 the average US life expectancy was: 77.8 years.

That at the CDC site, citing their 2005 final report.

Please, do keep up this line of attack – as ‘old’ is no longer what it used to be when the radicals on campus were young. In fact most of them, under what they are pushing, are getting ‘old’. Can’t we get away from these ‘old’ ideas of age? They can’t have it both ways… and citing 72 as ‘old’ is getting damned insulting to a lot of voters in a certain age cohort.

Yes, please do keep citing age.

Please.

And your mother will spank you for it, you 50-something whippersnapper.

I love the way that the hack from SC took the cheap shot about the per deim the governor took while commuting. (legally by the way) This had nothing to do with the subject at hand. Also I will bet that every pol in DC is getting tons of perks and per deim. We don’t have a clue as to what they have voted themselves. Reference Nasty Pelosi’s airplane.

Amazed on September 11, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Don’t think time served as a POW POW POW counts as “combat,” Ronnie.

Nobody’s shooting at you…

alphie on September 11, 2008 at 2:30 AM

McCain was shot down. That is combat. My grandson was shot after three weeks in Alfghanistan. That is combat. It is not the time in the theater of operations. It is all combat. Would you make the same sacrifice?

Johan Klaus on September 11, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Same ol’ same ol’ from the Dems. Bush, they call him dumb but notice how he kicked their butt twice (00-04) and now some old man is kicking their butt again. If these guys can kick their butts why should we vote for a Democrat?

It is fair, it is just the constant use of it…constant.
No more then after awhile I will say “I get it, he was a community organizer, now move on”.
It just gets tiresome…a real eye roller.
