The sadly obligatory “pig with lipstick photo at DNC community blog” post

posted at 2:09 pm on September 10, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Yeah, I’ve seen it. No, I don’t think it’s a big deal or has anything to do with what Obama said. World Net Daily notes that it’s being hosted on “the official website of the Democratic Party,” but then points out:

Like Obama’s official campaign site, the official Democratic Party website allows registered members to post user blogs. The Democratic site, paid for by the Democratic National Committee, features tens of thousands of user blog postings. It wasn’t clear whether the website staff monitors the large volume of content posted daily. It is doubtful Obama’s staff was aware of the pig posting.

The photo wasn’t posted on the site’s official blog, it was posted on one of those thousands of user blogs. Here’s the main page for user posts. Note the timestamps; new stuff is going up every two minutes or so, which means this thing has been buried under literally thousands of items since it was published 11 days ago, as well as dozens of new items on the individual user’s blog homepage. Why anyone of any prominence would have noticed it, either recently or at the time, escapes me. Palin didn’t even utter the “pitbull with lipstick” line until her RNC speech on September 3, which is supposed to be the reference The One was playing off of yesterday. If he was purposely taking a shot at her, it’s much more likely he hit on the “lipstick on a pig” line himself than that he or his staff cribbed it from someone languishing in obscurity in the DNC’s blog dungeon. Especially when there’s doubtless plenty of anti-Palin material to choose from floating around on the user blogs of his own campaign site.

Or is the point here simply that some grassroots Democrats were thinking of Palin as a pig in lipstick from virtually the moment she was named? Hey guys, after the last 10 days: Thanks for the newsflash.

obviously, immediately the Dems thought to compare palin to Bush calling her a “Pig with Lipstick is still a Pig” an effective way to communicate this message. It filtered its way into DNC talking points gradually from there, what Obama said yesterday was planned.

jp on September 10, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Palin didn’t even utter the “pitbull with lipstick” line until her RNC speech on September 3.

Correction: she first used it at McCain’s Aug 29 VP announcement in Dayton.

A. A pig is useful

skree on September 10, 2008 at 2:16 PM

Really nice analysis of the McCain-Palin counter-ad at Ann Althouse (emphasis mine).

It’s a skillful presentation the 2 “lipstick” remarks. Palin’s line, beautifully delivered, has a charming self-referential humor. It’s a cute, folksy boast that is also self-effacing.

Obama’s line is intended to be mean. If it doesn’t refer to Palin — and the intertitle tells us it does — then it’s just an old cliché. His delivery feels off. He stammers before he says “You can put lipstick on a pig,” as if he lacks full confidence in what he’s about to say. Then he scratches his forehead while he pauses, and the audience laughs. Only then does he go on to say “it’s still a pig,” after which he puts his hand in his pocket. I can see how that pause cues to the audience that this is where you’re supposed to laugh, and they do laugh. The punchline of the old cliché is “it’s still a pig,” not “you can put lipstick on a pig.” So the pause — as well the forehead scratching — suggest that Obama wanted people to think about Palin as the pig wearing lipstick.

In any case, Katie Couric pops up in the end to instruct us that sexism has been at play in this election.

The ad is essentially saying: Here’s the evidence. Make up your own mind.

Althouse seems to be sincerely on the fence, perhaps now leaning right, so I find her blog very helpful in assessing the impact of various actions by the two campaigns on undecided voters.

Hey… speaking of the animal kingdom, didn’t Obama challenge Palin to a game of H-O-R-S-E?

I see absolutely no downside to her taking him on it; nobody is expecting her to win (a couple of months after having a baby?) but if she does… Gawd, he’ll have to leave the country.

I say air it on ESPN, and let the proceeds go to the National Down Syndrome Society www1.ndss.org

HelenW on September 10, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Is there someone out there with good graphics skills that can design a McCain-Palin t-shirt with a lipstick wearing pitbull? eBay has one, but the graphic is kinds small. There’s GOT to be a better one that’s either out there or can be designed. A google search revealed very little.

I wrote this on the other thread:

When this story first broke, I watched the clips and came to the conclusion that Obama was simply using an old phrase and didn’t mean anything personal by it, just as when McCain used it in describing HillaryCare.

I’ve changed my thinking a bit.

Obama supporters like to say he’s a “thinker” who wants to sit down and talk with our enemies.

Obama says his lipstick comment was completely innocent. If we take him at his word, can we expect the same lack of foresight and judgment in President Obama’s “talks” with unfriendly (or even friendly) foreign leaders? If he could not see the possibility of a backlash and its potential to hurt his campaign, just how smart is Obama and who will he offend next?

Words mean something, Senator. They mean something no matter whether you are in Pennsylvania, San Francisco, or Iran.

Like Obama’s official campaign site, the official Democratic Party website allows registered members to post user blogs.

This point was lost on many here at HotAir when community users would post some stupid crap at the obama community site.

Also, I think we could have really handed their asses to them if we had embraced the insult. Sarah Palin is obviously not a pig and the imagery is so conflicting that I believe we could have mocked Camp Obama all the way through the election with this gaffe.

Instead we sound like Dem wusses whining about getting our feelings hurt.

To my ear, he said “lipstick on a pi-”, (rhymes with the “di-” in “oh, no, you di-unt!”) and never quite made either a “t” or “g” out of it. I figured he was giving himself plausible deniability if someone called him out on it, but they didn’t react. Perhaps this is why 0nada thought he could get away with actually saying the “g”

It isn’t the fact that Obama said it. It isn’t even a question of whether he was referring to Palin. The real story is that as soon as Obama heard that some people were offended he should have made an apology, something like…”I hope no one was offended. I was just using a phrase McCain used…etc.” Instead he takes his time and then attacks. Not smart and smacks of the arrogance we have come to expect from this campaign. He needs to get rid of Burton.
