SC Democratic chair: Palin’s “qualification” is that she hasn’t had an abortion; Update: Sorry if you were offended, says Fowler

posted at 4:51 pm on September 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Sarah Palin, talking womb.

What can you say? Besides this, I mean.

South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate ” whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”…

Fowler told my colleague Alex Burns in an interview that the selection of an opponent of abortion rights would not boost McCain among many women…

Told of McCain’s boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: “Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway.”

Keep believing, champ. I’m tempted to call this cognitive dissonance — Palin’s conservative and pro-life, ergo women independents surely can’t find her appealing even though many obviously do — but it’s probably just a case of the repulsive Fowler clan being their typical repulsive selves. If you’re willing to laugh at the thought of a hurricane spoiling the GOP convention by wrecking New Orleans, why wouldn’t you believe 23,000 people turned out today in Virginia simply because they’re jazzed that Palin didn’t flush her Down’s baby down the toilet like so many more enlightened, progressive women would have?

Exit question: Any women in the audience think diminishing Palin’s achievements this way is a trifle sexist? I lack the Absolute Gender Authority to make the charge myself, so it’s up to you. You go, girls.

Update: Meanwhile, MSNBC remains MSNBC.

Update: Bonnie Erbe raises the unthinkable possibility of women sexists.

Update: The obligatory intelligence-insulting “apology”:

I personally admire and respect the difficult choices that women make everyday, and I apologize to anyone who finds my comment offensive. I clumsily was making a point about people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue. Whether it’s the environment, the economy, the war or a woman’s right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue. That was the only point I was attempting to make.

I.e. “I was making a mundane point about voter priorities and accidentally accused Palin of being a joke candidate with nothing whatsoever to commend her.”

Hey “sweetie”, I am a pro-choice Republican that was not enthusiastic about McCain and I love Palin. There are a lot of reasons to vote for Palin. We are not all single issue voters. I am not bitter, I don’t cling to my guns, I live in a fairly large city and yes, I voting for Palin!

Does that mean Fowler’s only qualification is that she has the appropriate female equipment?

Hypocrites should learn to be more careful about what comes out of their mouths. I predict that line will come back to haunt her.

Not soon enough, though.

Romeo13 on September 10, 2008 at 4:57 PM

This Carol Fowler is a peach….

She stated, as her reason for backing Obama, his ‘electability’ and his years of working for the poor and middle class.

Again – the ‘community organizer’ crap.

So – according to her – Obama’s qualified because he could sweet-talk / hustle local politicians to build a playground and because he’s ‘electable’ ( which means, what? ).

But – conversely – Palin isn’t qualified ( despite holding years of executive experience at the state and local levels ) – except for the fact that she’s pro-life?

SC Dems – you get what you deserve, I guess.

Marines for Mccain on September 10, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Exit question: Any women in the audience think diminishing Palin’s achievements this way is a trifle sexist?

Hmm. I don’t know if this one is sexist so much as just generally insulting and asinine. I thought what she was saying was something along the lines of, McCain picked Palin, even though she’s utterly unqualified, because she’s credibly pro-life, as opposed to because she’s a woman and therefore women will want to vote for her just because she’s a woman. The latter is sexist, the former could just as easily be applied to a man, I think…notwithstanding the fact that men can’t have abortions.

Addressing the argument (which I think underlies some of Fowler’s statements) that women won’t vote for a woman who is “anti-woman” (aka pro-life), am I the only one who gets just infuriated by this? Since when is believing that women don’t get to kill their babies just because they’re women a misogynistic opinion? I’ve seen this argument over and over again, and it’s predicated on the assumption that to oppose legal abortion is equatable with wanting to oppress women. Is the only thing keeping women from being considered property their right to have an abortion? Abortion’s not a huge deal for me, if you think that it’s just not the government’s business and it’s not clear enough that it’s murder, therefore it should not be illegal, then fine. What gets me is this whole, “it’s my body my choice” bs, because it just makes no sense. It is intellectually dishonest–the right to an abortion is not the same as the right to, e.g. contraception. If you’re pregnant, your body happens to be being shared by a separate living entity, whether or not you want to call it a person. Therefore your rights to bodily autonomy can and should be weighed against that other entity’s right to life. That’s not oppression or misogyny, it’s common sense.

And the argument that “enlightened” women won’t vote for Palin, and that those who do are “colluders” who don’t know what’s good for them and just want to appease men IS sexist, and is unbelievably insulting both to Palin and to intelligent conservative women who happen not to agree with the far-left radical feminists and want to support a woman whom they agree with on some important issues, irrespective of Palin’s personal views on abortion. It’s like these people don’t think that women who think for themselves are capable of having any opinion other than theirs. So incredibly arrogant and insulting.

Their nasty comments are spoken from histrionics and show a lack of intelligence. The Greek word for uterus is hystera, which is the root word for hysterical. So even back then, they thought a uterus was trouble. Unfortunately, sometimes the greatest purveyors of misogyny are women. The good thing is that these types of hysterical, shrill women are in the minority.

Anyone see the picture of Barack on Drudge today? He doesn’t look presidential at all. He looks tiny and scared.
