Poll: Majorities in only nine of 17 countries surveyed believe Al Qaeda was responsible for 9/11

I can’t decide what’s more depressing: That the bastion of sanity on this issue in the Muslim world is the Palestinian territories or that our wealthy, well educated Asian and European “allies” lag far behind Kenya and Nigeria.

I almost don’t want to know whom people are thinking of when they answer “Other.” Exit question: Let’s see how well I know our readers. Which country’s result do you find most infuriating? I bet I can guess.

Can we compare that list to countries in support of Obama?

Ya know. Just for giggles.

lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 9:23 PM

Mexico for a thousand, Alex.

amerpundit on September 10, 2008 at 9:23 PM

if so many nations feel we did this, perhaps we can show off our madskills on their financial districts as a primer?

“Can we compare that list to countries in support of Obama?

lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 9:23 PM”

BINGO!!! My thoughts, exactly!!

Star20 on September 10, 2008 at 9:26 PM

Hate to go O/T so early on, but Team McCain just sent out a fundraising email. Team McCain and the RNC have created a joint committee that can raise money to fight smears against Palin and to help ensure victory. There’s also a compliance fund that can raise money.

Now back to your regular-scheduled programming.

amerpundit on September 10, 2008 at 9:26 PM

Freaking Mexico, WTF?

WisCon on September 10, 2008 at 9:26 PM

I’m disappointed in Turkey.

Also, isn’t Jordan an “ally”? By that I mean, an ally like Saudi Arabia is an “ally”.

And I say we run a canal along the US-Mexico border.

MadisonConservative on September 10, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Trick question.

You thought I would say Mexico.

But we all know that Mexico would have gotten it right if most of the many millions of its citizens who have a bit of snap and smarts had not already moved north of the border.

JudetheFossil on September 10, 2008 at 9:29 PM

This may be the reason why the BBC poll showed that the rest of the world wants Obama to win.

MedSchoolCatholic on September 10, 2008 at 9:29 PM

These are the countries the Dems want to improve relations with and want their approval.

CanadianGuy on September 10, 2008 at 9:29 PM

I want to know what the numbers are on this country. Just how many inbred morons think the US government or Israel did it.

thekingtut on September 10, 2008 at 9:29 PM

43% of Egypt believes Israel was responsible? ….. seriously?

henzou on September 10, 2008 at 9:30 PM

MEXICO? Really? For real? Good grief, I’m with MadisonConservative about digging a canal. I’ll bring a shovel. SHEESH.

Though…now that I’m thinking about it, it does provide a snappy rejoinder to “The world wants us to elect Obama.”

“Yeah? The world though 911 was an inside job too. TBHTTTT!!!”

Sarjex on September 10, 2008 at 9:30 PM

And I say we run a canal along the US-Mexico border.

MadisonConservative on September 10, 2008 at 9:27 PM

we did theoretical research back in the 60s called operation plowshare concerning excavation with high yield nuclear detonations……

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Plowshare

could have it dug in about 27 minutes I’d wager.

sven10077 on September 10, 2008 at 9:30 PM

Al Qaeda seriously needs to increase their advertising and public relations budget. Scratchy tape recordings a couple of times a year and video of Osama that was shot a decade ago aren’t cutting it.

How do they expect to be considered as the major terror purveyors of the new millennium if the public isn’t even aware of their major accomplishments?

Bartrams_Garden on September 10, 2008 at 9:31 PM

“what is …Mexico?”

Mike D. on September 10, 2008 at 9:32 PM

Bluestate_Blues on September 10, 2008 at 9:32 PM

Gosh the Kenyans and Nigerians are smarter than the Europeans? Shocked by Germany, let Puty-put gobble them whole

clnurnberg on September 10, 2008 at 9:33 PM

JudetheFossil – Good point, Mexico has a spread that indicates the residents don’t have a clue.

Jordan, Turkey, Egypt all fared worse than the PALESTINE TERRITORIES?

We call some of these guys allies.

Would be interesting to see how Pakistan fared in such a poll.

I think they would be in the “Al Who?” region.

Marine_Bio on September 10, 2008 at 9:34 PM

They believe this because so many AMERICANS put forth the idea that it was America that did this.
I believe that..and it pisses me off.

bridgetown on September 10, 2008 at 9:34 PM

Pleasantly surprised about France, though.

amerpundit on September 10, 2008 at 9:34 PM

Wait a minute…so a third of Mexicans thinks the U.S. is responsible for 9/11, but millions of them come over every year to work here? Man, it must be brutal down there.

they get killed by AQ….the denier nations for the most part are muslim infested with no major casualties….

sven10077 on September 10, 2008 at 9:34 PM

Well if you use such a tragedy like 9/11 as an excuse to launch your nine year old strategy for a “New American Century” by fighting one aggressive war and trying to start others, people are going to get suspicious because they have seen that rerun with the Reichstag, who incidentally is where their mentors Leo Strauss and Martin Heidegger came from.

Then when you whitewash the investigation by having people who should have been questioned by the commission the only people who were authorized to view classified documents, not to mention executive director and Gorelick that would also cause people to mistake a “well meaning” coverup to save the jobs and face of incompetent government workers for complicity in the attacks themselves.

I would like to see this poll side by side with the quality of education and freedom of press in each country.

bridgetown on September 10, 2008 at 9:37 PM

Um, how many Americans believe the U.S. government was involved? Shouldn’t that be the most infuriating?

terryannonline on September 10, 2008 at 9:37 PM

Kenya is an easy one. They’ve seen AQ up front and personal. More than once.

coldwarrior on September 10, 2008 at 9:38 PM

LevStrauss on September 10, 2008 at 9:35 PM

amerpundit on September 10, 2008 at 9:38 PM

Which country’s result do you find most infuriating? I bet I can guess.

Then, again, may we need not worry about what other countries think of us.

Do what we do. If they want to join along, fine. If not, so what?

If we were so bad in the eyes of the world, why is the rate of immigration applications to the United States huge, and still growing?

43% of Egypt believes Israel was responsible? ….. seriously?

Think about this: Mein Kampf is still a bestseller in Egypt and Jordan.

So yeah, they pretty much think Israel is responsible for everything.

mjk on September 10, 2008 at 9:54 PM

What are the numbers here? Whatever they are, the Al Qaeda ones are only going to go down.

The libs won’t let us teach “alternate theories” to our very existence in schools, but I bet you they’ll teach the “alternate theories” to this one in a heartbeat.

In two to three generations, 9/11 is going to be a fairy tale.

LibTired on September 10, 2008 at 9:55 PM

What disgusts me is that America IS the rest of the world.

I wonder how many countries were represented in the people who died on 09/11.

Oh, this is just depressing. I think I’ll go back to my usual idea of just Not believing polls. period.

bridgetown on September 10, 2008 at 9:55 PM

THank god they didn’t poll Americans. I’m sure the poll would be really close to the election polls.

I guess “global polls” are the wave of the future. There is another one on Drudge today saying that the world wants Obama. This makes sense, if you can’t get the poll results you want in the USA, no matter how hard you try, just poll a commie country and voilà.

I’d like to see this compared to “Did the Jewish holocaust happen?” And with a different sample from those countries, “Who was resonsible for the Holocaust?” I’m betting haters will either deny it happened or blame Israel and the US.

Most infuriating: Mexico – we have a real problem here that will have to be dealt with eventually. I’m talkin’ military. And these ingrates who obviously hate our guts – “W” allowed 20 million of them to come streaming across our southern border.

Most perplexing: Ukraine?? Could Putin be right about these nitwits? 39% don’t know? Duuuhhh! Maybe they don’t know how to read?

Most surprising: Nigeria and Kenya! Looks like we might have some friends in Africa, huh?

Personal issues, I would figure. In Egypt, one can always be anti-Israel or anti-US, but being pro-Al Quaeda is kind of dicey (muslim brotherhood and all). It is interesting, for sure.

progressoverpeace on September 10, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Most surprising: Nigeria and Kenya! Looks like we might have some friends in Africa, huh?

Not really all that surprising. Bush has probably been the best President in terms of aid to Africa in American history. Of course they’re not going to think he blows up his own stuff.

Which country’s result do you find most infuriating? I bet I can guess.

Not Mexico, if that’s what you were thinking ;-). Actually, for me, it’s Germany. A lot of people in Mexico are too poor to be educated or informed. But people in Germany are educated and do have access to the information. No excuse for that high a number.

I’m not surprised. Bush has done more for Africa in his 8 years than all the presidents over the past 30 or so…and that includes Clinton. By and large, the US is seen very favorably in Africa.
