McCain ad: “Lipstick”; Flashback: Obama flips the bird at Hillary; Update: Sexist Memory Lane

It didn’t take Team McCain long to develop a new television spot from Barack Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment. They have rolled out this 30-second spot hammering Obama for his sexism, using a Katie Couric quote to remind viewers of Obama’s allegedly sexist campaign against Hillary Clinton. They also note that while Obama isn’t ready to lead, he seems ready to smear:
What’s interesting about this is the timing. Obama had just torpedoed himself with his Crackerquiddick comments in San Francisco about small-town Americans (like Palin!) bitterly clinging to guns and God. Hillary had just cleaned Obama’s clock in a Philadelphia debate two days earlier. He responded to the pressure with a crude gesture — not exactly the kind of intelligent response one would expect from the former editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Update II: A few more data points for those wondering about Obama’s insensitivity on sexist imagery:
- “She’s got the kitchen sink flying, and the china flying, and the, you know, the buffet is coming at me.” — April 20
- “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out.” — February, Tulane University
- “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.” — February
Again, this is Obama’s turf. He started this line of thinking by accusing John McCain and Republicans on four separate occasions this summer of conducting racist attacks by coded subtext. If he wants to play that game, the McCain campaign just let him know that they can play it better.

Also, though it may still be debatable whether Obama was calling Palin the ‘pig’, or the entire McCain/Palin campaign, what’s *not* debatable is that the ‘putting lipstick’ reference was a reference to Palin.
Which ties her personally to whatever point he was ostensibly making, no matter how ‘innocent’.
It may be better not to overplay this with the ‘pig’ tie-in; the reference to lipstick alone is sufficient to plead bad will, with a clear conscience.

O’Reilly’s on the radio saying that this was an innocent mistake.
I call shenanigans.
He’s saying that Obama is not stupid enough to intentionally call Palin a pig.
I say Obama’s not stupid enough to make a mistake like that.
It was calculated, and it may work.
That McCain ad won’t help anything .. really stupid move. … And using Katie Couric’s analysis to punctuate? Stupid again. The ad calls the remarks “sexist” .. stupid again. They’re looking for McCain/Palin to overplay that victim card.
Said it before and I’ll say it again .. that fuse was lit, and that bomb was about to ’splode all on its own. Best thing to do with this woulda’ been to ignore it and let the commentators and blogs do their thing.
When your enemy is in the process of committing suicide, the best strategic move is not to interfere.

Just to play along with the lipstick theme:
Come election day, after coming home late from a long election night, many supposedly committed Obama voters will have a little Palin lipstick smudged on their shirt collars.

I hadn’t meant this as a way of letting him off. The public would have to decide for itself. It was meant to highlight the risk of it happening when dealing with the likes Russia or N.Korea. But maybe
would be better.

I like the pounding of this, and the ad. It’s clearly something the put Obama back on his heels.
Now, the next time Palin’s out and about and the MSM asks her about it, she should sluff it off with something dismissive and pithy. That way, it shows she doesn’t care about it even though the campaign is pounding it.

petunia on September 10, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Not to throw cold water, but looking at the three “flipping off Hillary” clips, it looks like at least the last 2 may be the same speech, shot from a different angle. Check out the clothing of the people behind him. Looks like it could be the same group (although the angle makes it hard). The lady in the reddish blouse, and the flowery blouse ahead of her, look the same. I’m not saying Obama didn’t do it on purpose. I just don’t think we may be looking at three different examples of it.

According to Tanya Reiman, the body language expert on Fox News, touching of the face is associated with deceit. Has something to do with an increase in blood flow to the face. I’d love to see her analyze this and the pig comment in one segment on O’Reilly. Anyone from Fox listening?
NightmareOnKStreet on September 10, 2008 at 2:01 PM
When this story first broke, I watched the clips and came to the conclusion that Obama was simply using an old phrase and didn’t mean anything personal by it, just as when McCain used it in describing HillaryCare.
I’ve changed my thinking a bit.
Obama supporters like to say he’s a “thinker” who wants to sit down and talk with our enemies.
Obama says his lipstick comment was completely innocent. If we take him at his word, can we expect the same lack of foresight and judgment in President Obama’s “talks” with unfriendly (or even friendly) foreign leaders? If he could not see the possibility of a backlash and its potential to hurt his campaign, just how smart is Obama and who will he offend next?
Words mean something, Senator. They mean something no matter whether you are in Pennsylvania, San Francisco, or Iran.

You gotta love DU. Yesterday, they practically had an orgy when they found out what Obama had said – they thought it was hilariously funny, and they nearly unanimously thought a) it was definitely a slam to Sarah Palin, and b) it was a great moment for Obama.
Today, they are outraged that no one is taking Obama at his word that he never meant Palin at all.

i’ve just realized this…McCain misplayed this.
instead of the umbrage being focused on being sexist, McCain should have used this moment to stuff this double entendre in Obama’s face, a la racism. remember, it’s people close to Obama who’ve redefined every wourd and phrase into a racist remark. this could have been a moment when McCain taught Obama the danger in that.

The 2nd and 3rd clips are taken from similar angles, so you can see the same woman in the red (cracking up once her friend tells her what Obama just did?), and man in the light blue.
The 1st clip is taken from such a different angle (and focal length) that you wouldn’t see any of the same people anyhow (though you get a better look at his bird-flip IMHO).
In all three, Obama’s tie is the same, the verbiage/pauses identical.
Petunia or anyone: are you still seeing differences between #2 and #3?

NO! He was referring to all of THEM! He clearly stated that he hasn’t read her new Health Care plan in response to a question at a debate, it was an answer.. and was addressing ALL of the Democrats Socialized Health Care bills, Obama and all of them. He said THEY, put it on there(Democrats). NOT she.
Chakra Hammer on September 10, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Had Hillary made a comment similar to Sarah’s previously, this would most certainly have become an issue. In this case, Obama’s comment followed closely on the heels of Palin’s comment at the RNCC. But for the absence of a smirk on his face, only the audience reaction gave it away.
At best, Obama’s words were poorly chosen and inarftully expressed. At worst, they were a puerile, sophomoric attempt to play a double-entendre, sort of like the high school jock who asks a cheerleader if he could pet her pussy and when confronted, shrugs his shoulders in feigned surprise, responding, “I meant her cat.”
ManlyRash on September 10, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Hey Obama! Who’s wearing the lipstick now?
Loxodonta on September 10, 2008 at 4:50 PM
According to Tanya Reiman, in her book “The Power of Body Language” you have to observe the person when you know they are telling the truth (a process she calls “norming”) . Then you can form a “baseline” to be compared to their other responses.
Unfortunately, more and more people who speak publicly, like Obama, are commonly being coached to not “leak” these “tells” or signals that would give away their lies.
My rule of thumb is if they are Democrats they ARE LYING. PERIOD.
NightmareOnKStreet on September 10, 2008 at 4:51 PM
Also, “lipstick on a pig” is a common phrase, and is used all the time, however for Obama to do this a few days after Palin made a joke and it was repeated on every TV show, and for the media to run with it, its obviously something that was planned by Obama in advance.
What is more disgusting in the “Old Fish” referring to a part of a woman’s anatomy as old fish? hmmm stay classy Obama..

I agree with you.
What I was trying to do was expose the ridiculousness of liberals using this line of rebuttal – not just for the reason you stated, but also because they believe something McCain might say that they would find objectionable (as in sexist) clears the way for Obama to act like a boorish ass.
They’ll accept sexism from him in any case, as long as it’s directed at a conservative woman – I know that – but the “Well, HE did it!” excuse just strikes me as obscenely immature.
Not coincidentally, so does Obama.

Not for nothin’ but the vid’s been taken off of Youtube for some time now.
Here’s the link to the Mav ad on his campaign site.
Here’s a link to the Politico artilce explaining things which, I believe, constitute the bigger picture with this story:
(Politico) “YouTube has removed a webad that casts Sarah Palin as the victim of sexism on the request of CBS, whose anchor Katie Couric was featured in the ad.
“One of the great lessons of that campaign is the continued and accepted role of sexism in American life,” Couric is quoted in the ad.
In the original clip, which aired months before Palin entered the race, Couric was talking about Hillary Clinton. The ad applies her words to Palin.
Asked about the ad, CBS spokeswoman Leigh Farris said, “CBS News does not endorse any candidate in the Presidential race. Any use of CBS personnel in political advertising that suggests the contrary is misleading.”
YouTube’s page displaying the ad now tells visitors, “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by CBS Interactive Inc.”
Couric’s original commentary can be seen here. McCain still has the ad, “Lipstick,” on his website.”

Biden left his comfort zone for glory, only to find himself.
Can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen! CLUELESS!
Actually, Biden can’t take Obama, let alone the media hounding and public criticism of his errs in judgment. He’s BEGGING Hillary to PLEASE take his place on the ticket. Double aneurysm Biden was Obama’s CHOICE, poor judgment.
Speaking of the devil, as chance would have it, who else heard Michael Savage’s opening to tonight’s show? He spent it elucidating Obama’s problem with women, interviewing psychiatrists.
The psychiatrists substantiated Savage’s points about Obama, though the female termed it as deeply embedded MISOGYNY. Plenty of details were discussed regarding Obama’s failure to overcome difficulties that many people experience. Another point was that Obama has the genetic tendency to narcissism as well as misogyny. Abandonment and subsequent “helplessness” are Obama’s bane to bear. Both psychiatrists said that though Michelle fills Obama’s need for a mother, even Michelle will inevitably experience betrayal by Obama. Meanwhile, Obama is not only emotionally disturbed, but socially disfunctional with women.
As though that isn’t enough to consider, DO NOT IGNORE the abandonment he experienced and felt injured by his fathers and the psychological impact that permanently impared Obama, an abused child who knew he was unwanted, who was twisted by every “change” forced upon him throughout the period that most people mature. No wonder “change” is his mantra. Misery loves company, and Obama demands that we all suffer the torments he endures, rather than seeking himself to be healed in private and live a simpler, kinder and gentler life with his wife and children. Barack’s CHOICE is to drag his babies (and wife who’s egging him on) into the limelight that he shouts Palin has no right to do.
Taking such a simple and stupid situation as the “pig with lipstick” crack from Obama (not including his multitude of snide and ugly remarks about women to women) EVEN IF HE HADN’T MEANT HARM (which he absolutely did), Obama CHOSE to fan the flames that he set like a looney arsonist who dances in the fire he set, enjoying both the destruction and the pain. There was neither the dropping of any further mention on his part of the insult (too ashamed to apologize, so feigning his abuse of women never happens), nor was there the simple apology, “I am sorry that my comment hurt any one.”
I have always said that Obama can neither apologize, nor accept an apology.
The more we see of Obama and the more we read of his life, the more obvious his radically disfunctional mind alienates us all, with the exception of people who share his crazed mentality.
NO WAY does Obama have any grounds to presume himself worthy of the office of President of the United States of America!
