McCain ad: “Lipstick”; Flashback: Obama flips the bird at Hillary; Update: Sexist Memory Lane

It didn’t take Team McCain long to develop a new television spot from Barack Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment. They have rolled out this 30-second spot hammering Obama for his sexism, using a Katie Couric quote to remind viewers of Obama’s allegedly sexist campaign against Hillary Clinton. They also note that while Obama isn’t ready to lead, he seems ready to smear:
What’s interesting about this is the timing. Obama had just torpedoed himself with his Crackerquiddick comments in San Francisco about small-town Americans (like Palin!) bitterly clinging to guns and God. Hillary had just cleaned Obama’s clock in a Philadelphia debate two days earlier. He responded to the pressure with a crude gesture — not exactly the kind of intelligent response one would expect from the former editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Update II: A few more data points for those wondering about Obama’s insensitivity on sexist imagery:
- “She’s got the kitchen sink flying, and the china flying, and the, you know, the buffet is coming at me.” — April 20
- “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out.” — February, Tulane University
- “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.” — February
Again, this is Obama’s turf. He started this line of thinking by accusing John McCain and Republicans on four separate occasions this summer of conducting racist attacks by coded subtext. If he wants to play that game, the McCain campaign just let him know that they can play it better.

FNC just announced that Obama is going to comment on his “pig” statement shortly in a news conference.
Yakko77 on September 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I then must clarify my context. I was referring to the official campaigns and not independent voices, as the campaigns themselves are not accountable for anything said outside their specific organizations.
Palin did not discuss Obama’s community organizer experience arbitrarily. Obama choose to belittle Palin by citing her as just a mayor from Alaska, she responded in kind with her comparison.
Obama continues to accuse the McCain campaign of statements that have not come to fruition. McCain can actually cite Obama statements.
I am not in denial of what others have been saying, I’m pointing out that Obama is inconsistent with his complaints.
geckomon on September 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM
And don’t forget that after spending all of two years (accomplishing nothing) in the very meaningful job of community organizer, Obama was telling his friends that he wasn’t getting anywhere, and he started applying to law schools.
If “organizing communities” is such vital work and important work (and even qualifies one to become president!), then why was Obama sick of it and looking to get out of it after only two years?

The reason Hussein O has such an intense hatred of women is because of his islamic religion.
I wonder if the dems will continue touting him, the more his inner islamofacist keeps coming out…or if the all powerful race card that they are so desperate to use after he loses, will oblige them to continue ignoring reality?

Excellent point. Let’s take it further…
Every time he get elected to an office (and I use the term “elected” loosely, since he’s never actually been elected to anything legitimately) he’s out campaigning for a different office within a year.
Seriously. This man has not held a job for more than 2 or 3 years in his entire life. People seriously want to elect him to the highest office in the land for a 4 years term?

meci on September 10, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I suppose we all see what we want to see. Or we see it, but then later talk ourselves out of thinking what we heard or saw is, in fact what we heard or saw. A few people here have decided, later, that they were surprised at their own initial reaction.
I trust that my initial, gut-level reaction was correct. I don’t believe in post-analysis rewrite. It is what it is.
I am, generationally speaking, in between the age group of Obama and McCain. More towards Obama’s age, a few years older. I suppose that makes me more sensitive to that particular, demeaning comment.
The young women and men of today aren’t fazed by it, because with the coarsening of our culture, that was NOTHING. They’re used to much worse than that, just listening to the music (term used loosely) of Obama’s generation. They don’t know or appreciate how long it took to get away from the casual acceptance of this type of insult.
So, maybe it’s a generational divide. But I’ve sucessfully made the argument, finally, with two other generations in my family that were for Obama. Now, they’re not.

This would not be his first act of stupidity. Remember, He’s The One. The rules that apply to the “little people,” like us don’t apply to Him.
The list is long. To name only a few, He gives Hillary the finger. He mocks the midwest (where he lives), saying they cling to their guns and religion. He refers to “my Muslim faith.”
So you tell me: Is he just another Ivy League pretender (as so many Dems have dubbed Bush) or does he realize exactly what he’s doing, confident that he’ll get another pass? It’s one or the other, and either way it’s clear he’s not ready to lead.

It’s high time Obama’s own multitude of lies and “deceptions” were brought out in the open.
Electing a pathetic, whining, lying child to the presidency is unthinkable.
MrScribbler on September 10, 2008 at 11:06 AM
I can only imagine the self-righteous outrage that would be raining down on McCain if he used an old colloquialism like “let’s call a spade a spade” in reference to Obama’s policies. I’m not a big fan of the feigned outrage card but I say let Obama stew in his own juices on this one.
What the McCain camp most definitely should NOT do is have Palin whine or express indignation about this. One of her biggest appeals is that she doesn’t play the victim.
rsrobinson on September 10, 2008 at 11:08 AM
I’d swear most folks here and the McCain campaign can and are “channeling” both, Senator Obama’s subconscious thought processes and those of his audiences.
Is this the type of truly “psychic change” we can expect from the McCain, Palin ticket…?
If they should win the election will they use these same powers of divination in dealing with our domestic and foreign policy…?
So the question still remains; is this isolated incident or will we see more of this phenomenal ability in the next couple of months…?

Another small observations: Have you noticed how the Obama campaign deals with things? Obama’s campaign is nothing more than a liberal blog with funding.

This speech, coming from a man who:
- has spent 3 months whining about nonexistent attacks from the Republican smear machine (”dollar bills”, “funny name”, “did I mention he’s black”)
- Has patently refused to participate in debates
- get’s on stage every day and, without fail, can only talk about the perceived injustices of the past 8 years without ever acknowledging the unparalleled challenges of that time (9/11, Clinton tech bubble bursting, etc.) or the overwhelming successes and progress made in the face of these challenges (troop surge, market growth, never been in a recession, etc.)
- The only solution to anything he has ever offered is HOPE, CHANGE and a misleading concept that you can somehow create jobs by taking the money that companies use to create jobs.
- Spent how many commercials, weeks and speeches attacking how many houses McCain has.
This pathetic, hypocritical, lying, empty suit, corrupt, friend to terrorists and felons infuriates me, second only to the media lap dogs that support him.
You want a debate, Obama- SHOW UP FOR ONE! You want to talk about failed policies- LOOK AT YOUR OWN! You want to talk about misleading and unproductive attacks- LOOK AT YOUR ENTIRE CAMPAIGN!

I dont know if this was mentioned yet, but several people are misquoting Obama as saying “Wrap a dead fish in paper…”. Thats because “dead fish” is the usual way of stating this. Obama deliberately changed it to “old fish”. Its obvious (to me at least) he was inserting the “old man McCain” meme again into his campaign.
If he wanted a common phrase using “old”, he should have said the already referenced “Paint and old barn, its still an old barn.” Same meaning, but without the forced insertion of the word “old”.
Waiting for Obama to tease McCain with “Hey, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

Not in this case. I couldn’t believe that Brit Hume and Laura Ingraham both dismissed it as not what it was. Calling Palin a pig. That was the INTENT. Very clear. Hugh Hewitt called it right. And to say that wasn’t the intent is to put lipstick on that pig!

I disagree.
McCain should hold a press conference of his own and, rather than deal with his BS, simply take up his 3 most recent empty debate challenges.
Simple statment:
“Senator Obama, I have had an empty chair waiting for you to debate me for 3 months. I have offered the time and place. You keep talking about debating issues and “that’s a debate I am ready to have”… so where are you?”

Darksean on September 10, 2008 at 11:39 AM
I have 2 possibilities:
Obama knew exactly what he was saying. This guy does not work on anything but canned speaches. He meant what he said.
OR,
Obama read exactly what was written and he and his advisors are idiots because they failed to pick up on the analogy.
I choose option one. I think it was his way to get the attention focused back on him so people would start listening to him again. He gives a speech responding to the comment, we all listen, and we also hear more of his rhetoric attached to his response. He had to do something extreme to get the spotlight back.

Rbastid on September 10, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Point taken.
My viewpoint prevents me from seeing this clearly, but what I do see is Obama lying and gaming the campaign like this is the Law Review election and he’s trying to run a scam. And McCain playing it pretty straight.
It appears that Obama has a juvenile thought process.
Jaibones on September 10, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Who’s to say the “stinky fish” comment wasn’t also aimed at the female on the ticket? Crude, but probably not beneath the Left.
Texas Rainmaker on September 10, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Regarding Senator Obamam’s “Lipstick Moment,” there are three possibilities:
1) He didn’t mean the phrase as a sexist slur against Governor Palin, and he was unaware that Governor Palin had just joked about herself being a Pitbull with lipstick, which was headlined across America for days just last week. In this case, Senator Obama is so out of touch with reality that he didn’t understand the obvious link between his phrase and Palin’s joke.
2) He didn’t mean it as a sexist slur, but he was aware of Palin’s joke. In this case, Obama is so insensitive to sexism in America that he didn’t understand the obvious connection between his phrase and Palin’s joke, that even his own supporters in the audience seemed to get.
3) He meant it as a sexist slur and tried to set it up to give himself plausible deniability.
So, Senator Obama is either out of touch with reality, insensitive to sexism, or an arrogant, unapologetic sexist. Either one of these qualities is disqualifying to be President.
Am I missing another possibility? If so, please explain.
Loxodonta on September 10, 2008 at 11:48 AM
This also bears repeating! Barack Obama is running for Middle School President. He is a juvenial joke. Can you even begin to see Hillary or any one on the Republican side you a profane hand gesture as part of an appeal for people to vote for them?
petunia on September 10, 2008 at 11:49 AM
A Maverick is not a fish. McCain has never been associated with fish that I know of. Can anyone say how hearing about a “stinky fish” for the first time yesterday right after a sexist jab makes you think of McCain?
The “Old/Fish08″ was subtly directed as a shot at both McCain and Palin’s Barracuda nickname from when she was a younger girl. He knew that one would get through even if the pig comment got the attention.
McCain=old
Palin=stinky fish
The goal of the entire presentation was a big gamble to destroy the image and trademarks of Sarah Palin, and he was ready to go with the claim his faux outrage if he was called on it. He also insinuated that her having too many kids would be overwhelming for her. It was all about Sarah, with a bit of McCain to make the medicine go down.
The GOP needs to hire an expert in Neuro-Linguistic Programming because Obama is basically trying to incorporate some of those techniques in his campaign. The finger flipping stuff is a non-verbal part of that effort.
He’s really hard to listen to because it’s a clever form of brainwashing.

I honestly think he simply misspoke. He may have chosen that metaphor because the word was in his head, but I do not think he meant to call her a pig. His audience, however, did go there immediately – because they would. They call names, they get vicious, and they made the connection the minute it left his lips. It demonstrates his lack of experience and comfort level without a prepared speech or teleprompter more than it demonstrates his viciousness. His audience is a different story. But he and his advisors know that this is going to cost him. It’s a major guffaw and I just don’t think they would go there on purpose. Call me naive.

I guess the scariest part of Barry’s speaking persona is that he reminds me of my brother. Lipstick on a pig is a common expression. But, it doesn’t matter what Barry’s intent was, it was clearly percieved as an attack on Palin by his sympathetic crowd and the sympathetic press. Perception IS reality in politics. The righteous indignation that Barry feigns in response isn’t going to do him any favors either. I love it!

the Dems explicity referred to Palin as a “Pig with Lipstick” after the selection. Obama just echoed the same remarks from the DNC themselves.

McCain’s Selection of Palin is Lipstick on a Pig

The big red flag for me is the mind-blowing accusation that McCain is doing the very things Obama has recently been caught red-handed doing, and in fact is continuing to do right at the moment he is uttering the words. It’s over the top and disconnected from reality. There has to be a purpose to go there unless he’s mentally ill or something.
Just a quick Google to see how many people are catching on to him using NLP found this blurb. I disagree with the view that it’s morally neutral because it’s often too close to cult programming methodology. But this reminded me how much Obama has been trying to win the Presidency as a political version of Darren Brown (very cool guy…and shows the audience how he manipulates minds), Mystery (manipulative pickup artist) or probably the most obvious comparison, Tony Robbins (if Tony was a total sexist ass):
More on the “Science of Insulting Women” below. The term is “negging.” In this case the goal is to break Sarah Palin-not to pick her up-but the techniques he has used since day one when she arrived on the scene are the same. Normally you want to insult the woman carefully so she doesn’t consciously grasp that she’s being insulted. But since Obama’s goal isn’t to sleep with her, then he can crank things up a bit more obviously to crush her self-confidence.

And Obama’s Illinois campaign chair is now hiding behind the “moral relativism” card. Yay.

Good to see Palin having a excellent rapid response team.
Bravo!

Relax, sweeties. These are just words, just gestures. No need to get the claws out, I know you may be feeling down and feel, uh, like throwing the kitchen sink, uh, dishes in anger, but, uh..uh.. an itch is an itch.

Sorry justincase – we gotta put the brakes on this claim. Those were NOT three different speeches, they were at MOST two different ones, and pretty sure it’s the same one.
Look at Obama’s tie, the folks behind him, the words & gestures – I think the Freeper’s been had.
Let’s not be ‘had’ in the same manner.
