McCain ad: “Lipstick”; Flashback: Obama flips the bird at Hillary; Update: Sexist Memory Lane
posted at 8:00 am on September 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
It didn’t take Team McCain long to develop a new television spot from Barack Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” comment. They have rolled out this 30-second spot hammering Obama for his sexism, using a Katie Couric quote to remind viewers of Obama’s allegedly sexist campaign against Hillary Clinton. They also note that while Obama isn’t ready to lead, he seems ready to smear:
I’d say the gloves are off. No need to post a transcript with this ad; it doesn’t take many words to get to the point.
Did Obama really mean to call Sarah Palin a pig, or at least refer to her in that sentence? In order to answer that question, people have to look at the full context of his statement here. He also said this:
“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”
“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
Given that Palin had very publicly made the lipstick/pit bull joke during her widely-seen acceptance speech, it certainly seems that Obama intended to reference both Palin and McCain respectively in this sequence, with Palin being the pig and McCain the “old fish” wrapped in change. The crowd certainly understood what Obama meant, and roared appreciatively.
Now Obama and his team want to pretend that this sequence had no meaning whatsoever. It’s always difficult to gauge intent, but one would have to think Obama an idiot for not seeing the subtext of his own statement, especially since the crowd understood it all too well. Obama himself has cried about the supposed racist attacks of Republicans and the McCain campaign all summer long, without ever once giving any evidence of it, and certainly not a data point like this.
If Obama wants to argue subliminal racism, he has no defense against overt sexism now. This is his game, and he just proved himself incompetent at it.
The question is whether this is worth the trouble of making an ad, and of doing an ad buy — which are two separate questions. I’d bet that this never sees air time, or if it does, only in precisely selected target markets. Even with the 30-second run time, this is better suited for a web ad. The end is a little too harsh; I wouldn’t call this a smear anyway. It’s a disrespectful insult, which is different, and not the most outrageous Palin attack we’ve seen from Team Obama in any case.
Update: I’m getting several requests for this video, in which Obama apparently flips Hillary Clinton the bird during a speech in April:
What’s interesting about this is the timing. Obama had just torpedoed himself with his Crackerquiddick comments in San Francisco about small-town Americans (like Palin!) bitterly clinging to guns and God. Hillary had just cleaned Obama’s clock in a Philadelphia debate two days earlier. He responded to the pressure with a crude gesture — not exactly the kind of intelligent response one would expect from the former editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Update II: A few more data points for those wondering about Obama’s insensitivity on sexist imagery:
- “She’s got the kitchen sink flying, and the china flying, and the, you know, the buffet is coming at me.” — April 20
- “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out.” — February, Tulane University
- “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.” — February
Again, this is Obama’s turf. He started this line of thinking by accusing John McCain and Republicans on four separate occasions this summer of conducting racist attacks by coded subtext. If he wants to play that game, the McCain campaign just let him know that they can play it better.

“lipstick” – Palin, “old” – McCain
There’s definite connotations there. Is the MSM covering this?

The most striking thing to me in Barry’s video clip is him wiping his forehead….he looks … beseeched. The un-president.

Did Michelle Obama mean to say she hated America?
Did Barack Obama mean to admit he was a Muslim?
Etc. Etc. Etc.
I find it troubling that the Obamas have such difficulty clearly expressing themselves. Perhaps they didn’t get their money’s worth from their Ivy League education.

I think you mean “besieged,” as in, “under siege.” “Beseech” means to ask, request, even plead.
Ed, whether or not this ad ever runs scarcely matters. Once again the McCain campaign has demonstrated its superior wit and intellectual firepower. These days, I almost even feel sorry for Barry!
kiltedscotsman5 on September 10, 2008 at 8:09 AM
I’m getting sick of defending OBiden, but there are enough patently obvious lies and political distortions coming from that campaign that McCain doesn’t need to fill in the blanks on these comments.
Kinda gives the opposition some ammo, methinks.

The most important and telling thing about his statement is that his audience immediately associated it with Palin you can tell by their reaction.
By the way the first part of his speech may have been plagarized from a cartoon

The best news of all is, over the left wing blogs, the communities are totally stoked about the pig meme. Not just overtly calling Governor Palin a pig outright, these geniuses are planning a merchandising angle, I kid you not.
They’re talking mass little Sarah pig-dolls, buttons, bumperstickers, lunchboxes, condoms, the whole works. Sarah is a pig.
They think this is a winning campaign strategy.
Poor Barack Obama. The levees have burst, and there are no grown ups around to fill up sandbags.

I was ready to give Obama a pass on this one since “lipstick on a pig” predates Palin by a while, but coupled with the unheard of “old fish in paper,” it’s obvious he’s making at best a double entendre and at worst a nasty smear.

On one hand that lipstick phrase is like a hundred years old as I have heard it many times. On the other hand a lady friend said to me that”Palin owns the word lipstick after her speech.Obama was clearly talking about her”.
The first time I saw the clip I thought to myself…Oooh..he shouldn’t have said that.
If Obama meant that as a reference to Sarah Palin then he just hasn’t been paying attention.
Smearing and insulting her does not help his campaign.
He has just insulted millions of women.
If he didn’t mean it still doesn’t matter as the Drudge Report has already plastered it across it’s front page.
Now he owns it.
It would seem that things are starting to change in favor of McCain/Palin for the better.Obama is stumbling.
NeoKong on September 10, 2008 at 8:18 AM
Unfortunately, F&F becoming more of Obama apologists these days. Rupert Murdock’s meet with O is doing these things, I think.

There’s hitting back and then there’s stupidly attacking. John McCain himself has used this phrase on several occasions and to describe women no less.
Typhonsentra on September 10, 2008 at 8:19 AM
There’s a difference between this ad and the “racist” smears against Obama…the American people don’t need an explanation as to why the lipstick comment was offensive.
Calling Uh-uh-uh-bama skinny is racist? Who knew? Highlighting Doh-bama’s vague work as a community organizer is reminding people he’s black? I did not know that! Saying O’Carter elitist is saying he’s uppity is saying he’s black? Well spank my ass and call me Charlie, but that’s news to me!
ynot4tony2 on September 10, 2008 at 8:20 AM
Where I come from we’d say “You can put paint on an old barn. It’s still an old barn”. We all knew what it meant. David Axelrod’s boy just expects our side to get tired and give up. In fact, I’d say the opposite is true. He’s the one looking haggardly while McCain is invigorated.
SouthernGent on September 10, 2008 at 8:21 AM
Ed, you’ve go to update this post with THIS and THIS in particular. Obama plagiarized the cartoon in that speech.
TheBigOldDog on September 10, 2008 at 8:22 AM
Katie Couric never looked so good.
Even if Obama had not initially meant it to be taken that way, the crowd’s reaction made it obvious how they were taking it. That’s the point at which Obama should have said, “Let’s not go there”. But he didn’t. Instead he sucked up the crowd’s cheering and embraced it. Big mistake.
petefrt on September 10, 2008 at 8:22 AM
This is all lovely stuff.
Now, we need McCain and Palin to rejuvenate their stump speeches with some short & snappy comic brush-off of the pig gaffe, and with some hard-hitting energy, economy, and education proposals.
We’ve heard enough about the jet sold on eBay the Bridge to Nowhere. And about the hockey mom – pit bull similarity.

-Obama continues running against Palin and Bush.
-Obama is wallowing himself down into the cesspool of filthy smears and slime the bloggers and media are slinging against Palin.
-The Democrats do not do good on defense.
-Obama cannot take a punch and does not do good in attacking. He is more and more shrill, stumbling, unclever. Obama has no or little sense of humor and so he does not do humor or sarcasm well.
-People have to ask after every Obama performance – is this guy really Presidential material?

Everybody knew what Obama meant … It was rude, crude and not befitting of a Presidential candidate.
The same with what he said about the “stinky old fish”.
Now the race card is back with Gov Patterson calling McCain a racist for saying community organizer.
It all goes to the character of Obama, and he doesn’t pass the Presidential test.

‘Lipstick on a pig’ is a phrase I use often, but I never have seen BHO use it before. If there’s no recorded instance of him using it before (and I’ll bet there isn’t), it was a deliberate ‘smear’ (of lipstick). The ‘old fish’ component makes it pretty clear it was.
Insulting women and old people; not the best two groups to make light of if you want to win the White House. Can we question his judgment yet/
michaelo on September 10, 2008 at 8:30 AM
I originally thought:
McCain = pig
Palin = lipstick
Which is still sexist (woman = lipstick, nothing more, sort of like calling a woman a skirt) and really offensive to McCain (honorable man = pig).
Republicans should just hit back with “Obama is so much in favor of change, that his choice of running mate is someone who’s been in the Senate since Gerald Ford was President.”
rbj on September 10, 2008 at 8:30 AM
I honestly think that it was an unintentional gaffe, but BOY… was it ever a HUGE gaffe.
It just emphasizes how UNPREPARED he (Obama) is to be president.
Now, the crowd obviously thought he intended to smear Palin.
By the way… TERRIFIC ad!! The turn around on that is phenomenal and McCain has some really great media people working for him.
Go McCain / Palin!!
Nineball on September 10, 2008 at 8:30 AM
As usual, the Obama campaign spokespeople/anchors on all the morning shows are in full Obama defense made over his Palin the pig comment. Yet these same media scum seem to find racist undertones somehow cryptically inserted into every McCain speech or ad. Truly pathetic but expected.

Great ad.
As a woman, I was offended by Obama’s lipstick comment. Obama’s campaign staff must have been ready to hog-tie him.
Carol on September 10, 2008 at 8:33 AM
The first time I heard the clip, I thought this was NOT about Sarah. But, now I think it was. The audience certainly thought it was.
However, I don’t think McCain should have made an ad out of it and I don’t think the sex education ad was the smartest thing to do. (The sex ad just brings up doubts people have, incorrectly, about Sarah’s view on abstinence only.)
Just my opinion.
stenwin77 on September 10, 2008 at 8:33 AM
There are plenty of old phrases that are inappropriate in certain situations. The crowd clearly understood what Obama said. If he didn’t get it himself he must be an idiot.
There have been plenty of comparisons between President Bush and monkeys the last 8 years. No big deal. But under no circumstances would it be ok to compare Obama to a monkey, even though it’s “just an old phrase.”

Obama has a script. He has a staff to review his script. He has a campaign manager to make sure each campaign stop, each moment on a stop, is on a specific message…and now this?
In the manner of Ghengiz Kerry, Obama not only blew a joke, but he once again gave the McCain/Palin campaign yet another freebie.
What makes this pig in lipstick statment have legs, is that Obama told Stephanopolus, and the American public, that his campaign, the Obama campaign, was pretty much how he’d run his Administration.
That being the case…can any rational voter actually consider voting for Obama?

Obama-Biden think they’re playing rope-a-dope, but they don’t realize that they’re stumbling and about ready to run headfirst into the turnbuckle.
Let’s not forget that Obama’s missteip is overwhelmingly more plausible than the phallic symbols that Obama’s supporters were finding in McCain’s ads. And the notion that community organizer is a racial slur because it’s code for “black” is absurd. If Obama is so proud of his community organizer days, he should flesh his responsibilities and his accomplishments. In reality, he’s a cleaned-up version of Jackson and Sharpton. That’s what people don’t like. And Obama wants to create an army of them.
I wonder whether the Republicans have been buying time until they can get Charlie Gibson on Sarah’Cuda’s turf. Then they’ll gradually roll her out, but going into the VP debate the expectations will be somewhat low. Then, Palin will field dress Biden.

As usual Ed, you give Obama too much leeway, and you’re too nice.
He is THE ONE, you know, and a smart man, he knows exactly what he was saying and intending, and he knows the difference between a “pit bull” and a “pig”; it was an intended insult/slight, done on purpose, you can get on it.
Just like last week; you all wrote about how he ignored Palin’s experinece as Governor, and talked only about her being a Mayor.
That wasn’t a mistake, it was an intended slight, meant to insult and diminish her accomplishments and career.
He also referred to “Wasilla” as “WaSILLY”; which you all put as (sic), as if he made a mistake there, again!
No such luck, it was an intended insult, and again meant to diminish Govenor Palin and Alaska and her Mayoral stint as well!
Get it? “WaS.I.L.L.Y”, as opposed to “Wasilla”??
Of course, since Barack HUSSEIN Obama (PBUH) is “black”, and the victim of racism, he’s allowed to make these put downs and insults, and the press finds them funny, and clever, and witty, and you guys trip all over yourselves making excuses for him!
Dale in Atlanta on September 10, 2008 at 8:43 AM

Diogenes of Sinope on September 10, 2008 at 8:44 AM
In context? BEFORE Obama’s pig with lipstick exposure of his own male chauvinism, he was discussing the person Palin by name as the target agent of change. Then, concluding his reference to Palin as pig, he references McCain a dead fish. In Chicago and any big city, there is only one exact meaning to stinking fish that references untimely death by murder.
McCain’s pig with lipstick slap specifically named a bogus health proposal, never referencing a person as target.
Note well who exemplifies statesmanlike etiquette, and who exemplifies ghetto rap.

The MSM are striking fear in the hearts of Americans by over-exposure of Obama who himself reveals as The Fraud who will bring about our demise along with his own. Just now on MSNBC Obama surrogate says McCain is “dishonorable” in the way McCain is responding to this.
Because he is being dishonorable in his response.
Tom_Shipley on September 10, 2008 at 9:06 AM
I disagree on this as “plagiarism”. It could be considered a literary device called “allusion” – a type of reference to a widely known story.
It is important to avoid acting like moonbats on this.
Right_of_Attila on September 10, 2008 at 9:07 AM
Now this is just ridiculous. Watch the clip:
He’s CLEARLY referencing McCain’s proposals and how he touts them as change.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPd4yk0x-eg
You know, McCain’s been doing very well lately… largely in part by producing reactionary ads distorting Obama’s image, personality and views.
He’s gone to far this time (not in the sense that I’m outraged, but in the sense that he’s making himself look bad).
To actually run an ad in response and FALSE portray the “lipstick on a pig” line as “Obama on Palin” is the perfect example of the kind of campaign he’s running. If there’s any justice in the world, this crap with come back and bite him in the ass.

The danger of lipstick, beyond it getting on your shirt collars and not coming off wine glasses in the dish washer:
Barack Obama’s pal Bill Ayers said this yesterday via a bizzare cartoon: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/in-a-not-remote.html
Now if you go back to Ayers September 11, 2001 New York Times interview about bombing Ayers actually said this:
”I don’t regret setting bombs,” Bill Ayers said. ”I feel we didn’t do enough.” Mr. Ayers, who spent the 1970′s as a fugitive in the Weather Underground, was sitting in the kitchen of his big turn-of-the-19th-century stone house in the Hyde Park district of Chicago. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F02E1DE1438F932A2575AC0A9679C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all (and Bill Ayers wonders how we could have made the connection between bombing and not doing enough)
Yet yesterday, Barack Obama was still claiming to Bill O’Reilly that Bill Ayers is just a guy from his neighborhood who is a teacher. Here’s News Hounds giving the spin from Team Obama’s perspective. http://www.newshounds.us/2008/09/09/barack_obama_can_now_add_bill_oreilly_to_his_dubious_associations_list.php
The fact is Obama had a lot more connection to Ayers that is being let on, Ayers helped him get jobs, they served on a board together for several years and Ayers helped promote Barack Obama in the Chicago Democratic Machine (early on when Obama was an outsider in Chicago). Why is this not getting more attention? http://hotair.com/archives/2008/04/21/why-the-obama-ayers-connection-matters/

Ed, Ed,
The type of ad you show for a Rep response to the pig joke you don’t buy airtime for at all! You post this on YouTube, LiveLeak and a few others. Yes it will get taken down in hours. But by then its been downloaded by 20k people and gone viral to 20m computers within a week. No airtime at all.
You’re stuck in 1980 campaigning.
Dr. Dog on September 10, 2008 at 9:10 AM
Was Obama’s “slip” scripted?
From FreeRepublic, Obama’s lead in to the lipstick remark was apparently identical to a political cartoon by Tom Toles.

Tom_Shipley,
By turning a blind-eye to the fact, it was a dumb thing to say, you just make yourself look dumb.

Poor Barack Obama. The levees have burst, and there are no grown ups around to fill up sandbags.

This is the 2nd salvo of McCain trying to beat Obama on his home turf. The first was to pick a VP with some Obama traits like youth, inexperience, energy, attractiveness, and especially a minority. Now he’s dipping into the realm of gender-baiting, whether justified or not, just as Obama has been flirting with race-baiting all year. How do you like it, Team Obama. Not very much, do you.
Paul-Cincy on September 10, 2008 at 9:13 AM
Also, Obama and Palin are both very smart and ambitious.

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.” I thought Obama was referring to his wife?
PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on September 10, 2008 at 9:14 AM
In Tom Shipley’s defense, I remember the multiple comments he left on earlier posts saying how stupid Obama was to claim that the Republicans and McCain had conducted racist attacks on him during the summer.
Oh, what? … Tom never commented on that?
Never mind.

I’m not sure where to put this analysis of another Palin detractor, but it deserves wide dissemination. Talk about pigs and lipstick!
Democrats and their gutter enablers surely have a lethal case of projection.

I didn’t see who was on but a woman on MSNBC just said
That’s it McCain camp needs to walk away, they overreached a bit, ok, let America digest it We get it. Obama’s delivery in the video nails him.
