McCain ad: “Fact Check”

The McCain campaign comes out with its second ad today, another attack on Barack Obama for the mudslinging at Sarah Palin since her announcement. Obviously, they have decided to fight fire with fire, and this ad also doesn’t pull punches. While Obama cries “Enough is enough,” the McCain campaign puts the onus for the latest eruption squarely on his shoulders:
The attacks on Governor Palin have been called “completely false”…”misleading”. And, they’ve just begun.
The Journal reports Obama “air-dropped a mini-army of 30 lawyers, investigators and opposition researchers” into Alaska to dig dirt on Governor Palin. As Obama drops in the polls, he’ll try to destroy her.
Obama’s “politics of hope”? Empty words.
The McCain campaign has to take care not to overdo it. They came out swinging, setting Obama back on his heels, but they don’t need to start acting like victims — or worse, to cast Palin as some helpless woman needing protection. Palin took a much better strategy at the Republican convention by ridiculing the media and campaign attacks and turning them around as weapons against her critics.
After today, they should take a much lighter touch with this. Poke fun at the desperation of the Left instead of trying to define who’s the biggest victim in this race. That strategy worked wonders for McCain this summer, especially since it punctured the sanctimonious Hopey-Changey rhetoric coming from Obama. They should stick with that winning formula.

Ed — the desired result is to make it impossible for Osama Obama to trot out the same tired lies and character smears he has gotten away with until now.
If that means shoveling his own crap back in his face, so be it. Clearly, he doesn’t learn until hit over the head with some truth.
MrScribbler on September 10, 2008 at 1:02 PM
I don’t know. there is something about the male protecting the female in these ads. Most women even strong women respect men that stand up for them even when they don’t need it. as long as they don’t tell them to go stand in the cornor. So if McCain stands with her shoulder to shoulder not in front and not behind this could be a good line of attack.

McCain’s really risking doing more harm then good. Today’s news focuses on the “Swift Boating” comment Obama made yesterday. Obama may have sprung a rhetorical trap hoping McCain’s campaign would over play the response. Now this back-and-forth has eclipsed the O’Reilly interview, and tough questions Obama’s starting to get – think the Annenberg Challenge records.
Hopefully McCain’s campaign will be quick enough to use their momentum to frame the issues discsussion. Otherwise, the big-Mo built up last week will be wasted on mud-slinging that will be forgotten by November 4.

Damiano on September 10, 2008 at 1:05 PM
I don’t see this as playing the victim.
More like upping the disgust factor.
Obama’s two main campaign themes have always been that he has better judgment, and that he’s a new type of politician.
The judgment claim has been well and thoroughly ripped.
Now McCain is attempting to show that the claim to be something new and different, is equally vacuous.
Obama is banking on enthusiasm to get his hard core voters to the polls. News like this crushes enthusiasm.
MarkTheGreat on September 10, 2008 at 1:05 PM
It’s not playing the victim. The ad is intended to head off the future attacks.
These last two controversies are going to make Hussein and the campaign second-guess everything they say and do. For decades, the Left has gotten a pass, while the Right has either walked on eggshells or been marginalized. Now, the other side is having to do that. It could throw them off their game bigtime.
Agreed, they must not overplay this. But remember, it’s only been a short time (may not seem like it, but it has). This ad is going higher, and as I said, is aimed at the future.
Tommygun on September 10, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Typhonsentra on September 10, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Pointing out what is being done – by Obama/the dnc is not ‘acting like a victim.’
Especially to the people who see this for the first time and didn’t know that “mr. I’m not going to use the politics as usual in my campaign” is participating/going along with doing this to the governor of Alaska. I think that McCain should also let people know that Obama used his lawyerly skills to remove his democrat opponents from the ballot so he could run unopposed. And that he voted ‘present’ 130 times. Some people have not heard this before. Unlike us. This is not acting like a victim to point this truth out.

wise_man on September 10, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Spending much time complaining about the lipstick on a pig comment. That would be playing the victim.
McCain’s single indignant response to that, more to make sure that the media picked up on it, than anything else, was sufficient.
MarkTheGreat on September 10, 2008 at 1:10 PM
You know, at first this morning, I was listening to those who said they gave him the benefit of the doubt and not to make a big deal of it. Then I read this blog and saw the connect the dots between lipstick (her) and “old fish” (McCain)…it’s just too smooth. Then I read the old finger to Hillary and remembered how people said he just scratched. Then I read the double-meaning words he used against Hillary (sink, claws, etc). This HotAir site is great and really does help connect the dots with things he’s done previously…despite his denials I have come to believe he meant it. I’ve read he is as thin-skinned as Carter, and it think it was his way to get back at McCain-Palin for daring to show the emperor has no clothes.

I tend to agree with Ed and AP…they’re very close to overdoing it. Keep the negative ads going, but hit him on earmarks…he’ll look like a fool attacking McCain/Palin for it when he himself has taken close to a BILLION dollars. Ask why he took the 3rd most campaign conrtibutions from Fannie/Freddie, ask when he’s gone across the aisle at all to work with the GOP or when he’s taken a leadership position on anything.
I say that…but then a couple liberals at work this morning admitted that they thought he was referring to Palin. If THEY think so, then maybe most of the country does too and this is somwthing that they can pound him on.

I agree Ed- in fact I was stressing this last night on the Pig-lipstick thread. Palin doesn’t need to play the victim.
This latest ad is a good place to stop with that path.
The next line of attack needs to be Palin smiling and dismissing Obama’s jibes as small, immature, very un-Presidential, and politics-as-usual. “Mr Obama represents the same old Washington politics of personal-attacks that I will fight. For a candidate who claims to be concerned about the issues- Mr. Obama can’t seem to get over the politics of personalities. He’s not change- he’s more of the same.”
FiveWays on September 10, 2008 at 1:13 PM
They should play off the wolves image and Palin’s reputation for hunting wolves.
Sackett on September 10, 2008 at 1:13 PM
Okay. NOW we’re ready to start campaigning on the issues, full time.
The way I see it, Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis are ready, now that they’ve leveled the playing field with the media (somewhat). Even with their bias, I think the media will be a touch more careful. After all, they are starting to look extra gullible and petty, never mind liberally biased and generally despicable. Not only has the past 10 days engendered sympathy for Gov. Palin and thrown the Obama campaign off their game, it has delayed the discussion of the issues that the American people deserve, and now the McCain campaign can urge us all to “get back to the issues, honestly people, the American people don’t care about this stuff”.
The American people may not care in the end about this stuff, but you can’t even get to the end if they don’t like you to begin with. We’ve got the public’s sympathy now; the fact that the people seem to LOVE Palin too is just a bonus. Meanwhile, there goes another 10 days. Beautiful…now let’s get on with it!

I’m with those who didn’t get victim from it at all.
I was actually pretty struck by the starkness of it. It’s some direct and hard-hitting stuff. And I think the timing wound up being perfect. I’m still regaining my composure after reading what the Enquirer did today.
Slamming a soldier on the day before he goes to war? I don’t care whether it’s true or not.
And after Barry’s performances yesterday and today I’m not buying one more protestation of innocence from him.
That whole deal was a set piece. He had his indignant response written before he ever covered his face and rattled off the line. And while I very seldom believe in conspiracy theories, I find it as if a piece of the puzzle has fallen into place that the Enquirer started after Edwards during the Democrat primaries.
But even if not it doesn’t matter. The outrage at them for smearing a young man who–even if every word they wrote about him is true–has obviously gotten himself together and is shipping off to war on 9-freaking-11 is going to be white-hot and electric.
And it’s going to burn anyone associated with it at all.
And this 30 second ad is going to help crystalize that rage.

I think Palin is no where near seeming like a “victim,” but I think that it’s important that the focus shift to what a McCain-Palin administration would do. I detected a pretty clear whiff of “where’s the meat?” from the talking heads this weekend. I think a valid claim can be made that the RNC convention failed to convey a clear message of what positive steps McCain would take on the economy and other domestic issues. His speech, and the other speeches I saw, didn’t do much to lay out what he’d specifically like to accomplish.
Right now Palin is drawing media attention to stump speeches. That may not last. We want to take advantage of the free airtime to start delivering some clear policy positions.
I think McCain and Palin have clearly one the “character” issue in the minds of many “fence sitters.” That’s super-important. But, there needs to be some clear messaging to the undecideds about what a McCain-Palin administration would do.

I liked this one better than the other one. If the Clinton supporters really want to see a woman ever have a chance at the presidency, they are as close as they will ever come with Palin. Hillary’s biggest problem is “if your own husband doesn’t respect you, why should a country?” The democrats knew she couldn’t be elected so we’ve got Barry. If they let him destroy one of their own with lies and innuendos without a peep, they will prove their goals were empty and hypocritical.

It’s not about playing nice. It’s about delivering substance.
I’m following things pretty closely, but even I am not sure if McCain is going to bend on ANWR. I’d like someone from the ticket start to deliver more specifics about energy policy, for example. I’d like them to acknowledge the victory of the “drill now” congressional Republicans and tell us how they are going to build on that.
These ads are fine, but they are not sufficient. I think those of us (on both sides) who have firm convictions and long-held party affiliations tend to think of undecided voters as not thoughtful. That’s a dangerous generalization. McCain and Palin need to emphasize some specific policy positions.

I haven’t seen such a masterful set of campaign tactics since… well, since… hmmm.

Ed, you’ve sprinkling too much nuance on your Wheaties.

“Jesus was a community organizer”
That’s right, Jesus came in order to organize our community!

BS – that’s a great ad that has the added benefit of being completely true. It reminds voters that Obama is not the transcendent candidate above politics he claimed to be. In fact, he’s even lower than politics as usual.

The attacks on Governor Palin have been called “completely false”…”misleading”. And, they’ve just begun.
——————-
Which attacks would those be? This implies ALL attacks are completely false. This is not true, therefore it is misleading.
The Journal reports Obama “air-dropped a mini-army of 30 lawyers, investigators and opposition researchers” into Alaska to dig dirt on Governor Palin.
——————–
Yes. So fu*king what. BOTH SIDES DIG UP DIRT ON EACH OTHER. Claiming Obama does this but not acknowledging that McCain does it too is hypocritical.
As Obama drops in the polls, he’ll try to destroy her.
——————–
McCain would do the same, so this is also hypocritical.
Obama’s “politics of hope”? Empty words.
——————–
Call the whaaaaaambulance.
What a piece of sh*t this ad is.
The Half-truth Express and the Avoid the Issues Bus are neck and neck. Beep beep.
Next.

Barack,
Since change that isn’t change is just a pig wearing lipstick, why call yourself that?
maverick muse on September 10, 2008 at 1:33 PM
I agree here, Ed. Sure, let this one run, but the idea that oppo researchers–which every candidate has unleashed upon them–are suddenly salivating wolves for Sarah Palin is a bit much.
