Biden’s Stevie Wonder moment

posted at 7:30 am on September 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Adding to the very bad day Barack Obama and Joe Biden had yesterday, Biden made a gaffe that was at once understandable and yet defining.  Biden wanted to recognize a few people at an event by having them stand up to greet the crowd, and wound up exhorting a man in a wheelchair to do so:

Biden had an awkward moment during a rally in Columbia, Mo., Tuesday. At the start of his remarks, he pointed out several state lawmakers in the audience for praise. When he got to Chuck Graham, a state senator from Green Meadows, Biden urged the lawmaker to “stand up Chuck, let ‘em see ya.”

But Graham, who is in a wheelchair, can’t stand up – a fact Biden quickly picked up on.

“God love ya, what am I talking about,” Biden said. “You can tell I’m new,” he quipped, asking the audience to stand up for Graham instead.

Being gracious first, I’ll say that I see this kind of mistake made occasionally with my wife, who is blind.  I’ll have to remind people that she can’t see them nod or shake their head in conversation.  The First Mate doesn’t wear dark glasses or normally carry a cane, too, so often people don’t realize she’s blind until they’re told.  Sometimes, to her aggravation, they’ll apologize for using the words “see” or “watch” as if they offend her, which of course they don’t.

On the other hand, Biden’s looking right at the man in the wheelchair when he asks him to get up, and that’s hard to miss.  I’m also less inclined to offer Biden a pass after eight years of Democrats talking about what a moron George Bush is supposed to be, including as one of their data points an urban legend that Bush waved at Stevie Wonder at a Ford Theater benefit in 2002.  The Washington Post reported it and it flew through the national media and late-night talk shows, until finally the Post decided to investigate it and found out that Bush had actually waved at Kelsey Grammar.

At least this story is true.

I’m sure all the late night jokes will be about this…….not.

ctmom on September 10, 2008 at 7:35 AM

Not a big deal but, funny. When I was a rookie EMT I once asked a man who had only one leg which leg hurt. It was dark and he was on the ground and his wheelchair ended up across his legs. That’s a good excuse right?

boomer on September 10, 2008 at 7:36 AM

LOL LOL is he for real?? BUFFOON OF THE YEAR
Although he did well with the nice comeback “we all stand up for Chuck”

Well, I guess I can give him credit for a good recovery.

Too bad it wasn’t Obama. If The One had commanded the wheelchair-bound man to stand up, the man would have been able to do it.

Biden is just so phony. I cringe when I see him speak even when he’s not telling a guy in a wheelchair to stand up, or calling Obama “clean and articulate”.

forest on September 10, 2008 at 7:47 AM

I’m not inclined to give a Democrat a pass on anything. There’s a reason the approval rating for Congress is the lowest in the history of approval ratings. Democrats are about 100% style and 0% substance.

At least President Bush tried to get things done, instead trying to surrender or refusing to hold votes because it might not go his way.

AZCoyote on September 10, 2008 at 7:48 AM

And this is supposed to be the

smart

party, according to the DNC media lickspittles.

Obama and Biden say something stupid every minute they’re away from a teleprompter, but that they are brilliant, is a given of course.

All it takes to be presumed intelligent by leftist fools, is to believe in socialism.

That’s the big attraction of socialism, in a nutshell. Stupid people are attracted to it, because it’s all they need to be considered brilliant. They don’t have to have any actual smarts, they just have to believe in socialism.

Nice bullet to hold onto next time people start talking about how dumb “Dubya” is.

DVPTexFla on September 10, 2008 at 8:01 AM

I can’t bring myself to look at the clip. I hate to see anyone embarrass themselves, even a tool like Biden. There’s enough policy garbage dripping from his lips to keep me entertained. No need to make much ado about a simple, understandable, oversight.

pugwriter on September 10, 2008 at 8:01 AM

You can tell I’m new.

Does this guy have enough experience to be VP?

TheSitRep on September 10, 2008 at 8:04 AM

Sometimes, to her aggravation, they’ll apologize for using the words “see” or “watch” as if they offend her, which of course they don’t.

Emphasis added

Unfortunately, Ed, they probably have good reason to fear that saying “see” or “watch” to a blind person might offend them. I suspect that some blind people WOULD take offense. We are, sadly, a uber-touchy society these days.

And, I’m sure all politicians with any level of experience would remember the Bush Waving At Stevie Wonder Urban Myth. It turned out to be false… but that doesn’t really matter, does it? It’s out there, and that’s what matters.

There is the double standard from the MSM. As I recall way back in the Dan Quayle potato episode, he was given flash cards by the teacher for the class and POTATOE was spelled wrong on the flash card. He mentioned it once, but it was ignored of course. Maybe it was a setup from the beginning.

Joe Biden, the gift that keeps on giving.

Kafir on September 10, 2008 at 8:11 AM

Biden belongs under a rock, for sure but I think he handled it very well. A similar thing happend to George Bush, remember when he asked a guy to take off his sunglasses? The man was blind. He later called the man to apologize.

I can’t fault him on this one.

stenwin77 on September 10, 2008 at 8:13 AM

Am I wrong or does the MSM seem a little less inclined to crow about the intellectual superiority of Obama/Biden over McCain/Palin…or do I just need to wait for it?

jencab on September 10, 2008 at 8:24 AM

Minor compared to his big policy gaffe:

Suggesting that Republicans don’t really care about kids with Downs Syndrome, because if they did they’d support (federal funding of) (embryonic) stem cell research.

I can’t believe that turning a policy disagreement into a personal attack (questioning whether Sarah Palin loves her newborn son) would be looked on favorably by many people.

Pablo on September 10, 2008 at 8:37 AM

The only reason Biden is on this ticket is that Delaware law allows him to run for reelection to the Senate and Vice President at the same time. Biden had nothing to lose. Obama’s short list was down to Biden and Gov. Dean. Everyone else turned him down in part because of his treatment of Hillary and his god like attitude, But most of all the realization that under Obama the office of Vice President would strictly be ceremonial. A god does not delegate responsibility or share praise, only blame.

meci on September 10, 2008 at 8:40 AM

Biden, being the true disciple of The One, could have pulled off a Benny Hinn moment, and made the man to rise, rise, I spit out the devil in you, rise, believe…believe my brother….

But, no. In typical Biden fashion, Biden opens his mouth and inserts foot.

How can any rational voter want this guy in the White House, one heartbeat away from the Presidency?

coldwarrior on September 10, 2008 at 8:41 AM

Hmmm, let’s see. So far:

Obama:
- slows rise of oceans
- heals the planet with the sound of his voice
- predicts light coming upon followers, preceding and epiphany
- has a temple built in his honor on mountains

Biden:
- tries to make the infirm walk

Nah… no pass on this one. After 8 years of Bush jokes (which these two idiot push as reasons for everyone to vote for them), the crap they are peddling about McCain’s POW story, houses, 100 years, etc. and the nonsense with Palin… no pass.

McCain says he’s not sure how many houses that Cindy’s got money invested in (how many shares of stock you got, Barry and Joe?) and Bam Bam makes a commercial about it. Screw ‘em. This needs to go up along with the lipstick commercial as “Apostle of The One”

This isn’t completely about DNA, it’s also about keeping abortion as a booming business. I can’t wait for some scientist somewhere to start extolling the potential of using cells from partial-birth abortions, which I have no doubt is coming.

ClintACK on September 10, 2008 at 8:28 AM

But it’s not just a policy disagreement. If they really cared about results, they’d be pushing for adult stem cell research… since that’s where all the advances are coming from! Pushing embryonic research just makes it sound like they’re trying to find a “positive” to justify killing babies in the womb. (Oops… did I just give away their strategy…?)

I really feel nothing but pity for Biden. He just seems completely uncoordinated a lot of the time. He doesn’t strike me really as phony, but more like he’s overcompensating for something from when he was younger.

Biden’s not some 30-year-old that Obama picked out of the private sector and is in his first political campaign. Ol’ Hairplugs hasn’t been “new” to the national political scene since he first moved into the Senate 35 years ago. Nor is he inexperienced with campaigning nationally to get a job in the White House.

“You can tell I’m new an incompetant boor”

FTFY, Joe.

lionheart on September 10, 2008 at 9:04 AM

I can see this becoming a solid source of comedy material. It’s symptomatic of the left in general, i.e. a total inability to observe reality and reconcile it with their own thoughts. Reality is just whatever they happen to think/feel.

Bicyea on September 10, 2008 at 9:48 AM

To be honest, I don’t mind when people slip up and say silly things. People who do a lot of public speaking are going to make verbal slips. It’s no big deal.

What I do mind, and what is a big deal, is the way the left/media jump all over republicans when they make slip ups (even faking some like the Stevie Wonder wave) but consistantly give a pass to their fellow lefties.

So, no, we shouldn’t give Biden a pass on this. We need to file it away with all his other dumb statements and create a Biden Blooper Reel to run for the last few weeks of the election.

The dem’s are all about equality, or so they say. So let’s give them a little equal treatment on this.
